My new meds make my skin throw a fit. It’s not terribly bad, just a few things here and there, but it’s bumming me out because I’ve never really had too many run-ins with acne.

My four-year-old sister, however, is under the impression that it’s just “3D freckles”, and that they look very, very pretty. She wants all of my freckles to “pop out”, especially the ones across my nose; they’re her favourite.

And it puts me in this weird position where I can’t say, “No, this is acne, and it’s bad,” because I don’t want to teach her that it’s a bad to have unclear skin, you know?

Because the more I think about interactions I have with children, the more I realise that children will consistently compliment “flaws” until they’ve been taught not to.

Like, a kid at the library, whose sister has vitiligo, saw my scars once and suggested that his sister and I should be cats for Halloween, since I have “tabby skin” and she has “calico skin”. “I can be a black cat,” he immediately added. “It’s not AS cool, but they’re the spookiest.”

When I started losing weight, my little brother immediately demanded that I gain it back, because I wasn’t as comfortable to cuddle with anymore.

And my other little sister always wants to wear her paint-stained clothes to school so that “everyone can tell [she’s] an artist”.

I don’t know. I guess talking to little kids just reminds me that all of this superficial shit we worry about really is 100% made up.

A beautiful, bubbly, lively kid full of innocent passion who grew up too fast in the harsh lights of the Korean pop industry.

I still can recall her wide eyed, definitely nervous look during their debut stage. Her sweet live vocals coupled with powerful dancing and charming cheek whiskers whenever she smiles made her easily one of the most beloved maknae of her generation.

Others will say she messed up as a grown woman while others will argue that she showed the conservative SK audience that women can do whatever they want and sexism doesn't have a place in society.

Others will accuse her of being an attention wh*re while others will say the admire her for her strength, confidence and candor.

However you feel about her, let's remember her with respect and treat everyone who is mourning for her passing with care and civility.

May her soul rest in peace and may those who mourn for her find comfort with one another.

27. “Mmm, I appreciated that little murmuring you did in my ear.” “….That wasn’t me.”

61. “He’s gonna get you! He’s gonna get you!!”

Siyeon fell onto the bed next to you, the room was dark, but you could feel the familiar shape of her body as she pressed against yours. A smile slipped across your face, listening to the soft murmuring of her voice in your ear. “Mmm,” you turned towards her. “I like when you do that.” Siyeon seemed to be dead asleep, her body not moving an inch as you pressed your hand against the side of her face. “Babe,” when her eyes fluttered open, you gave her a soft kiss upon her lips. “Babe, I appreciated that little murmuring you did in my ear.”

“What murmuring,” she mumbled tiredly, pulling you closer. 

You looked at her incredulously, “the murmuring you did just now,” your cheeks began to blush, “you know, of the stuff you wanted to do to me.” 

Silence slipped by before she answered, “that wasn’t me.” 

“What do you mean it wasn’t you,” you quickly asked. 

She nuzzled into your neck, “I didn’t say anything to you, both of us have been asleep this entire time.” 

“Didn’t you just get home?” 

“Baby girl,” she sat up, looking at you as if you were insane. “We went to bed together.” 

“No,” you started, repeating it over again and again. Siyeon’s eyes stopped you. They were darker than usual. “You’re not my girlfriend.” 

She smiled. “He’s gonna get you!” 

“What? Who? Baby, I’m scared.” 

“He’s gonna get you,” she repeated, her eyes slipping into a pure black color until the body of your girlfriend disappeared before your eyes and your were left looking at a tall, black shadow. It’s eyes a horrifying pale white. 

Without a second thought, you ran. You kept running until you found yourself alone in the middle of the street. Turning in circles, you tried to look for which way you should run when a car screeched by you, pulling to a stop. A woman almost fell out of the car, running over to you. Her voice filling your body with dread, “baby? What are you doing out here?” 

“Don’t hurt me,” you cried out, pulling away. 

She pulled you closer, her voice calming now, “What do you mean? I’d never hurt you. Baby, let’s go home.” 

“No,” you told her, “please don’t take me back there.” 

“What do you mean?” 

But you had fallen into incoherent sobs. She pulled you out of the street, buckling you into the car before driving off to a safer place to talk.

Urgent Kakapo Disease Situation

There has recently been a devastating outbreak of aspergillosis among the critically endangered kakapo parrot.

Kakapo conservationists had a record-breaking year of 70 new kakapo chicks, only to be hit with a sudden, severe illness that has already killed 7 birds (there are only 142 adults and 72 chicks in the entire population).

The staff of the Auckland Zoo and Department of Conservation have responded heroically to this challenge, but there is only so much they can do with their current staffing and funding. They need our help!

What can you do?

DONATE. Department of Conservation biologists have made it clear that their usual funding is not enough to deal with this unprecedented situation and have flat out asked the public for donations.

**Zoo People**: As of June 3rd the Auckland Zoo was still asking for additional staffing support from the zoological community: “at least one additional avian-experienced veterinarian, three zoo veterinary nurses, and three avian experienced keepers”.

I don’t know if they are still looking, but if you know someone in the Australasian zookeeping community (or who is willing to travel to New Zealand) who fits those qualifications and might be available to help please tell them to contact the Auckland Zoo!
