I think it’s really interesting to compare what I think are the best movies of 2019, Parasite and Knives Out. Both have a lot in common, underclass protagonists, self-absorbed rich people that deluded themselves that they’re good people, unusual tone that combines tension with comedy.
The major difference is that Knives Out pulls its punches at the end while Parasite does not. I’ve heard a review of Parasite that said the movie would be a lot worse if the son’s dream turned out to be real and he really did work himself up to be a rich person himself and help out his dad.
But that’s exactly how Knives Out ends! Marta really does get out of her unfortunate situation in the end and gets everything, and not just inspite, but because of her being hardworking and honest and compassionate.
Knives Out is a lot less sympathetic to the rich people it is satirising, and they are much more direct parodies to the more nuanced rich family in Parasite. And also not only are the poor people in Parasite very much not entirely good and honest, there is also another group of people who have it even worse that throws your sympathy for them into question.
Parasite ends with the poor people worse off than when everything started. It really drives the point home that no matter how cunning and ambitious and hardworking you are, you cannot just overcome your class status. It’s a fundamental critique of capitalism.
Meanwhile, Knives Out is a superficial criticism of rich bigots but on the whole it just reinforces the neoliberal idea that even if you are a poor immigrant, you will eventually be rewarded if you are just perfectly good and honest and hardworking.
