how do they celebrate their wedding anniversaries, like the not milestone ones like the seventh but also the milestone ones like the 15th or 30th?
I'm just gonna keep this general as far as possible if that's fine😅 And all after being parents, of course :))
- Their first anniversary after having Mac would be when Mac's around 6 months. It's easier than their first date night as parents because Amy's grown to understand that taking some time off your baby isn't bad. That isn't to say it's not hard. They're FaceTiming Karen every 30 minutes or so, just so they can see their boy. Karen knows what's happening though, so she declines all their calls soon after. It's not a bad thing, as they come to learn, because now they can spend some much deserved alone time together.
- Jake's usually the one to splurge on their anniversary. Reservations, gifts, fancy food - he's all for it. One thing he learns after being a dad is that if you take your son to help you with gift shopping for your wife, you better buy something good enough for him too, or he's gonna throw a tantrum in the middle of the store.
- Amy gets her husband something, too, of course. It's nothing flashy or anything, but it's always a set of something childish, like a copy of a super rare comic of the Turtles, paired with one to show how much he's grown as a dad, like a T-shirt or hoodie with Mac's handprints on there right on the top left, above his heart (and later Maya's too)
- When Mac and Maya grow older, they learn about their parents' anniversary, but they don't know what to do. Like they've been told that it's the day Mommy and Daddy got married, but what does that mean? So they ask Rosa and Charles and they enjoy an afternoon of arts and crafts. Drawings, finger-paintings, cards - they make everything they possibly can; and Jake and Amy love all of it of course, but they just don't have the space on their work desks (which already have several creative works of their kiddos) to add the 5 different items they've made today.
- There are times when they have to celebrate their anniversary at home with their babies, and that's not bad by a longshot. If anything, it's possibly better. The kids love it, too, because they get to eat "fancy" food, too, which is just lasagna if we're being honest. But the best of all is they get to hear the story of how Mommy and Daddy got married - which opens up windows to several other stories too, like how they met the first time, and how they realized they love each other, and Mac and Maya's birth stories. They look at hundreds of old pictures, and the kids are amazed at how different but also similar their parents look. Of course, it does confuse their youngest a bit, because she still is trying to process how Mommy and Daddy had a life before them.
- When they're put to bed, Jake and Amy can only admire them both, all snug and content in their little beds.
"Crazy to think how these guys wouldn't have happened if we never married in the first place." "I mean... they could have happened. You don't need to be married to get pregnant, you know." "You know what I mean." "I know, I know." "You ever think we should have another one?" "Jake, I'm not having a third baby just because the two we already have are growing up so fast." "Eh, worth a shot." "... I'm up for the practice, though, if you are." "Let's gooo!"

Something I adore about the finale is the way the show left the future open-ended but also absolutely certain, you know? Like, we know that Holt and Amy are going to thrive in their jobs. We know that Holt and Kevin are going to be happily married for the rest of their lives, and the same for Jake and Amy, and for all the other couples. We know all the parents are great parents. We know Rosa is happy. All the small details are to imagine, but the broad strokes are certain.
yeah ❤️i loved that they left it so open for us to decide our own ideas about what happens now but we also know they're going to be okay. perfect ending imo even though i still haven't been able to rewatch it lol

Why must my feelings be “rational”? Is it not enough to sit quietly in my hawaiian shirt, deranged?
