I like that chapter 3 of Candela Obscura has the hook of multiple team members who have monstrous abilities themselves: a doctor with a jekyll/hyde complex, a living locust hive, a man who keeps coming back from the dead but loses a part of himself each time. With previous circles the horror came from not knowing whether the characters could even survive against the horrors they faced, but this taps into one of my favorite tropes: the protagonist who is themselves a horror. It isn’t about whether they’ll get chewed up by some monster in the night; it’s whether they can keep control of themselves so they don’t become something far worse than what they fight.
