LAW & ORDER SVU 15.13 || 24.12—OLIVIA BENSON DEALING WITH BX9.
These two scenes have so much in common, and yet they're also opposite of each other. Not only are both criminals members of the BX9, but they also share the same willingness to spend time in prison and for almost the same reason. Moreover, they've both made an incriminating phone call from prison. However, in 15.13, Carlos has no idea that the phone call has been recorded, whereas in 24.12, Oscar is very much aware of this—he did it on purpose. And the difference between these two scenes lies exactly in the behavior of these two criminals. Carlos is young, and he's a braggart who isn't afraid of threatening a police sergeant in the presence of the ADA and his own lawyer. It shows that he's probably new to this world. By contrast, Oscar is older than Carlos, and he is also more seasoned—he's been in command of the BX9 for a while now, he knows how to move inside this world, he knows when it's time to give up and to accept a deal from the ADA office, and he also knows that threatening the life of a NYPD captain and her son is detrimental, therefore he is willing to back off. Furthermore, he also shows respect for Olivia, mainly because he is impressed by the extent to which she has gone to protect Noah.
Even Olivia's behavior is completely different. In 15.13, she had been in command of the unit for a short period of time, and, just like Carlos, she wasn't very "seasoned"—she had just started learning how to be a boss and how to move in this new world; she was dealing with him more as a detective than as a boss. Plus, she had just come out of the whole William Lewis experience, and she didn't have Noah to take care of, so it's understandable why she wasn't scared by Carlos's threats. However, in 24.12, Olivia is more like Oscar—she's been the head of the special victims unit for years now; therefore, she has learned to deal with these types of criminals with more "diplomacy." Moreover, she has seen what these people are capable of—that they are not afraid of killing a NYPD officer like Duarte—and, being a mother now, she fears for herself and for Noah; therefore, she does not have the same defiant behavior as in 15.13
Lastly, I have to say that these two episodes feel like a full-circle moment, especially because in 15.13, Olivia says that she has the biggest gang in the city and she encourages Carlos to test the NYPD, and in 24.10, after she has been attacked by members of the BX9, Olivia herself says that they have "enough of a police presence" to keep her son safe, and it's true—there are police officers and state troopers everywhere: in the hall, outside her apartment, outside the building. And this truly proves that she truly has, in fact, the biggest gang in the city.

I was not at all surprised at how they chose to tell this situation. Let's bear in mind that almost half of the current cast is of Jewish origin (Carmyn Manheim, Reid Scott and Odelya Halevi). Moreover, Odelya Halevi was born in Israel and lived there since 2008, and after October 7th, she used her platform to essentially spread misinformation about the whole thing. I used to follow her on IG, but the things she was sharing in her stories were just unbelievable so I unfollowed her immediately. She was sharing interviews of prominent political people saying that pro-Palestine people were praising terrorists and violence, and were justifying 9/11. I really don't get why on the show she portrays a Lebanese woman. Lebanon, a country that was attacked multiple times by Israel. Attacks that she justified, since Israel was just "defending itself". If I were Lebanese, I would protest.
All in all, having grown up watching the OG L&O, I have to say that I was a bit disappointed by their writing choices. I really hoped they did better than this, but I guess I was just naive.
listen it’s been a while since I’ve really flexed my procedural drama muscles and I’ve been out of touch with the dick wolf universe but I am being very serious when I say I want everyone tonight to either use your critical thinking skills to watch this latest episode of law & order and observe the writing decisions or else to not watch it at all.
I say this after having seen it and the completely biased way in which they portray the war in gaza. the writers made active and telling choices. they chose to make the professor in support of palestine a child groomer and brainwasher. that all palestine supporters are planting antisemitic ideas into the minds of children. they are not. (see: my current professor who vehemently supports palestine and is jewish, working for an organization of jewish people asking zionists to not commit these acts in the name of judaism.) they write that palestinian supporters condone murder and violence. they do not. the show positions antisemitism as the epicentre of the war. it is not. this war is not about religious views or antisemitism. it is about a decades long land occupation. it is about mass genocide and apartheid and forced displacement.
what was especially interesting was the arab actress character in the episode who was essentially a vapid pain in their ass by using her platform to “spew hateful nonsense” when in real life this would never happen. in fact, actors and celebrities who are supporting palestine are being fired from major projects and cut from their agencies.
so please keep an open mind and be extremely critical of the way they choose to portray each side in this episode. media representation has always been skewed in many ways. just be mindful.

"People came up to me and they were like, 'You're gonna just, like, do a show with like all the albums in it?' and I was like, 'Yeah, it's gonna be called The Eras Tour. See you there.'" (requested by anon)

i remember back in 2016/17 we didn't know if taylor would ever release music again, we didn't see her for months and we were SO over the moon when she announced reputation. and now fans expect taylor to release an album/rerecording every other month, it's taken for granted that she's always gonna do more more more. i wish we could all just pause and be grateful for what she does instead of constantly demanding more. this endless consumerist culture really sucks :/
