headcanon that scully did not have a phone next to her bed before mulder entered her life. it's just annoying having to get up every time he calls her at 2am because he misses her and wants to hear her voice has important information that can't wait until morning. or every time she suddenly feels the urge to call him in the middle of the night.
also phone sex once they're together

um what notting hill is iconic to me and I’m not even old 😭 i miss romcoms with romcom icons in them
Right? I mean rom-coms used to be popular. They used to win awards! "It Happened One Night" won an Oscar in 1934. Was that 100 years ago? Yes. Does it matter? No. That same year "Notting Hill" came out, George Clooney (!) and Michelle Pfeiffer (!) did "One Fine Day" together, which is maybe my favorite rom-com. I miss rom-coms like that too.

every time I get an email from ao3 telling me somebody left a comment on one of my fics, every time I see that somebody reblogged something I wrote on tumblr, my day improves instantly. every time it makes me feel that I want to keep going. so I just want to say this to all of you who comment and reblog: I hope you know how important you are.
stories, art, meta -- those things aren't created in a vacuum. they are part of an ongoing conversation between the material, the fic/meta writers and artists, and the people who interact with what they read and see. and that's not just true for art and all forms of writing. the whole world is a big, intertextual web made of billions of voices. we react to each other and that's how we create community and art.
every time you react to something you've enjoyed, you contribute to that conversation. every time you do that in a positive way, you tell the writer or artist "I hear you and I care enough to respond." even if it's nothing more than "I love this." it means artists and writers know their voices aren't just being swallowed up by the great big void. it encourages people to keep expressing their takes on the conversation that is art and writing. it means we all get to have more of it.
all of this to say: commenters and rebloggers, you are superstars. thank you. I love you.

Unruhe has such a grasp on me. the way mulder is looking at scully. the way she is looking at him. the fact that he RUNS after the car screaming her name. the complete emotional breakdown only staved off by needing to find her and find her fast.
and when he does find her they just keep screaming each other's names like that alone will bring them back together like two magnets ripping through everything between them.
Tumblr media
and then there's this parallel that just. rips out my heart. looking at the same picture and being incredibly fucked up over it.

I’ve never jived with the idea that Fox Mulder is a sex machine or, forgive the pun, a fox. I think he wants to be when he’s a young man. He studies how to be that person, approximates most of the right moves, and then the thrill is gone. He ditches more lunch dates and regular dates than he actually attends, and that plus the spooky appellation through the FBI means that through the grapevine he acquires a reputation as hard to get at best, a cad at worst. If you think about it, did he ever really see a healthy romantic relationship growing up? Sure, his parents loved one another once upon a time but there were secrets upon secrets between them both, and after Samantha was taken everything crumbled. Fox Mulder is not a stud. Fox Mulder is a mess.

I really love Spender and Padgett as antagonists to Scully.
Because the way they project their own vision of Scully onto her is so completely untrue that it contrasts perfectly with her truth.
They are a specific brand of monsters in the x files, a genre, if you will, that try to enforce patriarchal views onto women, and every time, every time the story presents it as completely ridiculous that they can't see what the truth is, that their denial of it becomes their eventual downfall.
Because they don't view Scully or any other woman as anything other than a vessel for their desire, something inhuman, waiting for them to imprint their world view upon her, taking away her voice, her body autonomy, her truth.
And every time the story proves them wrong. Every time Scully proves them wrong.
Rather than just focusing on how she's a strong woman who can fight back, and has agency, they set episodes like En Ami and Milagro up to show how men are capable of creating an incorrect narrative and believing in it so deeply that when Scully fights back and proves herself a full human being with her own opinions, desires, emotions and strengths that have nothing to do with them... they resort to punishing her with violence.
And always, always they stick with the central theme for Scully's character: that the truth is there, and it's Scully's role to make it plain, it is her power to articulate it.
Characters like Spender and Padgett are perfect antagonists to a character like Scully because they construct a truth and try to project it on her, to enforce it upon her, but she always has the last word.
The truth only ever comes from Scully

If you look very closely at this image, you'll see at least three very young, very hairless baby squirrels having dinner.
