the garrison once asked all the students to write down the names of their piloting role models, and keith wrote shiro's.

this made shiro go all mushy, which in turn made keth tell him that he was just the only person there whose name he could remember

matt: this is my little sister katie. she built a robot when she was only six. one day she'll be the greatest tech genius in the world

shiro: this is my little brother keith. when he was thirteen he stole my car and then i adopted him. one day he'll get into a fistfight with god

matt hates hearing shiro's stories about keith's stunts because it genuinely makes him question everything he ever learned during his lifetime of being a nerd

matt: are you aware of the fact that according to literally every law of physics your brother should have died approximately forty times by now

shiro, who didn't have breakfast that morning because keith ate a whole box of dry cereal the other day: i should be so lucky

sometimes keith will just run up, jump on to shiro's back, and then stay there for the unforeseeable future. shiro doesn't even acknowledge him up until he goes to sit down and keith yells "stop takashi you're going to crush me!!" to which he feigns surprise and goes "oh hey keith. when did you get there"

shiro: and just remember, patience yields focus

keith, nodding seriously: ok. got it.

shiro: great! i knew you would buddy

adam:

adam, once they're left alone: dude. what does that even mean?

shiro, dropping his face into his hands: i have no idea. i'm only twenty i don't even know how to preheat the oven please leave me alone

thirteen-year-old keith once gave adam the shovel talk. adam tells shiro about this as though it's some cute anecdote, but shiro actually panics because "no you don't get it, he's serious. you should probably lay low until i talk to him"

keith: would you take a knife for shiro?

adam: haha um. sure?

keith, reaching into his pocket: ok good

keith sometimes gets scared during the night but he doesn't know what he's supposed to do about it so he just taps over to shiro's room and stands next to his bed silently staring until shiro wakes up with a scream

shiro: i will never give up on you keith

shiro, after finding a knife under keith's pillow while changing his bedsheets: ...i will give up on you occasionally

the first time keith initiated a hug was genuinely one of the happiest moments of shiro's life. this is a big deal, considering the fact that he literally keeps a memory book

shiro, showing the memory book to adam: and this is keith in his favourite romantic chemicals t-shirt

keith, burying his face in a pillow: you're so embarrassing. please fuck off

whenever shiro acts particularly overbearing and dad-like, keith just looks him straight in the eye and goes "isn't saturday bingo night in the retirement home"

shiro, the pioneer of recklessly driving off of cliff edges: are you TRYING to get yourself killed

keith, who just went skating without his knee pads: ...

whenever he talks to literally anyone shiro will be like "yeah i love keith. he's a very good kid and an amazing pilot and i'm very proud of everything he has achieved. i would do anything for him" but also when keith asks if he can have a gum he’ll say no and call him a shithead

shiro: keith, dinner's ready! come to the kitchen

keith: (comes to the kitchen)

shiro: it'll be done in five minutes, actually. but now that you're already here you might as well set the table

keith, opening the drawer with the kitchen knives: i hate this family

the sillier the joke, the louder keith laughs. the first time little preteen keith bursts into full-body laughter is when shiro makes a truly horrible pun, and once he calms down he's like "what the shit are you looking at" while shiro just stares at him with tears in his eyes because god he loves this little dude so much

garrison official: wait. keith isn't your kid?

shiro: ...no?

garrison official 2: huh. i really thought you and adam adopted him

shiro: wh... how many of you thought this?

shiro:

shiro: put your hand down, keith
