Dreams of Gods and Monsters
Author: Laini Taylor
Book: 3/3
Genre: romantasy
Summary: The future tests on Karou as she has managed control over the Chimaera’s rebellion through means of deception. When the Seraph Emperor brings his army to the human world, Karou and Akiva are reunited through an alliance against a common enemy.
Review: I love this series, and though I have read this trilogy twice now, I am sad that it is over. This story never tires of its excitement and wonder. I love the fascinating universe Taylor created, and I love the beautiful love story between Karou and Akiva. Their dream of peace and happiness, and their will and hope that drives it is beautiful. Watching their dream become a reality, and Taylor using it to solidify her message of the power of hope, brings tears to my eyes. I also adore the fact that Mik and Zuzana have a role in the story, even though their humanity dwarfs them in comparison to Eretz’s complex dilemmas, history, and fantastical beings. It makes the story seem more real to me, being able to see parts of it through human eyes like my own. I would recommend this series to literally anyone who knows how to read, especially those interested in fantasy, romance, and outstanding world-building.

Days of Blood and Starlight
Author: Laini Taylor
Book: 2/3
Genre: romantasy
Summary: With an age-old war resurrected, Karou and Akiva find themselves on opposing sides. Karou is taunted by secrets and impossible choices, and must decide how far she will go to avenge her people.
Review: This book does a wonderful job of transitioning the story from book 1 (Daughter of Smoke and Bone), to book 3 (Dreams of Gods and Monsters). Taylor introduces the new world of Eretz, details about the war, and the struggles faced by both the Seraphim and Chimaera people. This new information builds the story and its fictional world, all while Taylor continues to tell the enchanting story of Karou and Akiva, making this book unrelenting in its heartfelt themes, intensity, and overall entertainment.

The Secret History
Author: Donna Tartt
Book: 1/1
Genre: fiction, mystery/thriller
Summary: The Secret History is a thrilling novel told through the eyes of Richard Papen. He narrates the story of his and his college classmates’ act of murder and the desperate measures taken to keep their secret hidden.
Review: If a work of art could be transformed into literature, The Secret History would be it. It was dark, mysterious, fascinating, and fulfilled all my dark academia dreams. Tartt’s story structure and pacing was perfect; it was as though each major part of the story blossomed before my eyes as new details were revealed and secrets were uncovered. What made this book stand out to me was how the plot emerged. Tartt would reveal key plot points before they would happen, making it almost feel like a spoiler. This was what grabbed my attention and made me desperate to read more; every page turn was thrilling. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in mysteries, thrillers, and a dark academia aesthetic.

Jo’s Boys
Author: Louisa May Alcott
Book: 4/4
Genre: fiction
Summary: Beginning 10 years after Little Men, talented authoress Louisa May Alcott brings us back to Plumfield where the story is told by Jo, surrounded by her growing boys heading off to their own new adventures full of travel, romance, shipwrecks, tribulation, and murder.
Review: This book was so sweet and charming, and above all a lovely way to end the story of the prospering March family. Though the first book, Little Women, will forever have my heart, I adore the three books following which tell each of the characters’ stories wonderfully as the March family continues to grow. Alcott’s series touched my heart through her family-oriented story and motifs of love, sacrifice, death, hope, and Biblical themes. I also loved the cottage core aesthetic found in each book’s setting. I would recommend this series to anyone interested in classics, romance, heartfelt stories, coming-of-age stories, and cottage core books. I am sad to have reached the end of this story, but I am ever so thrilled to have watched this family grow. I love happy endings.
