Random thought but one thing I love about Gandalf and Frodo’s relationship is that Gandalf only asks Frodo about his welfare and offers counsel in private, or at least out of earshot from people who could potentially overhear.

In the extended edition of FOTR, Gandalf calls Frodo away from the rest of the Fellowship before asking Frodo about his shoulder. When their conversation continues and they talk about the growing power of the Ring, Gandalf waits for other members of the Fellowship to pass before offering Frodo advice. In the ROTK book, on the first anniversary of Weathertop, Gandalf only asks Frodo if he is in pain once he is by Frodo’s side, and he speaks quietly, perhaps to keep the conversation as private as possible. And Frodo answers even though he had been silent the entire day up to that point.

I think Frodo is more honest and open with Gandalf than he is with anyone else, even with Sam. And that says a lot about the trust Frodo places in Gandalf and the importance Gandalf places on seeing to Frodo’s well-being.

For reference, if you can name the 9 members of the Fellowship, the eponymous Hobbit and his 13 dwarf buddies, 3 prominent women, and the guy who runs the Rivendell B&B, that's 27 characters right there. And you probably also know the name of a dragon.

For further reference, Tolkien Gateway has 637 (!!) pages dedicated to Third Age characters. (Don't click that link until you've voted, of course)

Edit: Your humble pollmaker gave this a try, and got as far as 73 before deciding she was too tired to keep trying to remember dwarf and Silm names.
