lightning mentioned in cars 3 that he wished he could have seen doc as happy as he was when he was still racing, thus making the assumption that he could never have brought that kind of happiness to doc himself.

in all of those happy memories and time spent with doc, lightning still thought that his existence did not bring as much joy to doc as racing did. it wasn’t until smokey set him straight that he realised how his friendship had not only healed doc’s hurt but made him so much happier and alive.

“racing wasn’t the best part of hud’s life, you were.”

and this was long after doc’s passing. which means lightning spent all of those years not only grieving, but feeling like he wasn’t enough for doc in his final years.
