Fantoft Stave Church is a midieval church located in Norway outside Bergen. This building was a suggestion from a friend after I asked my family, friends, students and followers on Instagram to come with suggestions to what to make for this year's gingerbread house.
It took about 20+ hours over four days and consist of about 50+ pieces.
I whittled a Totoro for a friend of mine for Christmas. She has an upcoming first time trip to Japan coming up in the new year and I wanted to make her something to bring with her.
The figurine is made in basswood and was way harder to do than expected. I'm considering myself a relatively experienced wood carver and the carving itself was fine. But getting a nearly round character looking correct from all angles was more complicated than I anticipated!
I'm currently teaching at my former animation course and today it was animal walk day so we had some dogs in for reference.
Afterwards I wanted to give it a shot myself, on paper. My first traditionally animated animation in a few years! It went MUCH better than expected considering I was rusty. It ain't perfect but considering it was done in a technique I'm not doing often anymore I like it!
I forgot to update my artober drawings on here this year. In my deffence, this year it was so hard to find time for the challenge at all!
I decided on an autumn theme as I needed something simple. But rather than making completely stand alone drawings I wanted to fill two pages of my sketchbook.
I think it turned out great and love the look of them all together! I might have to look into making stickers out of these cause they turned out so nice!
A small animated film some friends and I made over 48 hours in the Cardiff Quick Draw.
Not perfect, but considering the time spent we were all pretty happy with it! The year's theme was 'blend' so the idea was to make a film where we blendes our animation style together by animating individual sections.
My section was the first one with the animals and fx as that's what I like to animate the most.
The paintings I did for my niece who's theme is always her and her dog. With her's I also decided to try and use less colours and leaned a lot on the work of Eyvind Earle for inspiration.
I have a niece and a nephew and for every Christmas and birthday I give them a specially made gouache painting. Both have a set theme I try to always have a link to. These are for my nephew who's theme is the Lion King.
I love making these and ideally I would have more time to paint other than for these pictures but at least I never fully forget the skill as long as I keep this up.
I'm an assistant lecturer at my old university. Mainly teaching basic animation principles and clean up. I did a simple cheetah run cycle as a demonstration for them during a lesson before Christmas and I recently found the rough again and decided to tidy it up and try out animating spots and a design that's very different from my own. Very happy with the result, but it will be a while till I animate spots again!
Bit late but here is the gingerbread house I made for Christmas.
Bit of a new approach for the house of 2021, I didn't base the house on an excisting house or a house from a movie this time. Instead I got a friend who has a degree in architecture to draw an original design for me. Definitely more nerve wracking for him than me! 😂 I enjoyed myself!
Have you watched Sweet Tooth yet? It took me a while to get around to watch it as it looked a bit too weird for me and I wasn't familiar with the comic it was based on. But the show is really good with really wonderful characters and an enganging story. Highly recommend! And thank god there will be another season!
Process video of my animation of Karsten Warholm. Made in TvPaint. Started as a quick rough animation made during lunch that I really liked and ended up finishing.
I made a sketchbook cover for a friend’s birthday based on the Shepherd’s Journal from Atlantis: The Lost Empire, her favourite Disney film. Very happy with the final result and so was my friend :)
Here is a link to my twitter with a video of the final result as well as a small making of video. https://twitter.com/chrnerland/status/1411989000647331840
Animated illustration done for this group of female animators that I'm part of. We're currently making a collection of illustrations on aging in the animation industry.
In the UK ageism is not a big issue but with aging in an industry like ours some worries do come up and we were asked to illustrate these. I don't worry much about it but I do wonder how I will eventually balance kids and my work as I'm not willing to give up on either, so I'll have to combine it somehow.
