🌊 Korea’s hero, Admiral Yi Sun-Sin(이순신 장군) 🌊
Hello everyone! This is Admin Sun here with another post ☺ Today (April 28th) is the birthday of Korea’s hero, Admiral Yi Sun-Sin (이순신). So, the Jojal-jojal team decided to make a post about Admiral Yi. He can be found on Korea’s 100 won coin.
Tumblr media
100 won coin
Admiral Yi Sun-sin was born on April 28th in 1545. He played a crucial role in the wars against the Japanese when they invaded Korea during the Joseon dynasty. The Japanese leader Toyotomi Hideyoshi attacked Busan in the spring of 1592 to satisfy his ambition for invasion. The Chosun army failed to defend Busan and the Japanese drove up North towards hanyang quickly. The Joseon King Seonjo quickly took flight North to ask Ming China for help and left his son Gwanghae, the crown prince, in charge.
The Joseon army, with old-fashioned weapons, was no match against the Japanese army which possessed firearms. The King Seonjo quickly took flight North to Uiju to ask Ming China for help and left his son Gwanghae, the crown prince, in charge. The Japanese army arrived in Hanyang in less than twenty days, and they advanced North towards Pyeongyang and Hamgyeong-do.
In this dire national emergency and the Joseon army failing in land, Admiral Yi crushed the Japanese navy in the sea. Though Admiral Yi was thrown into prison after being falsely accused by jealous colleagues, he eventually returned and became the commander of the naval forces in Cheolla-do. He also developed the turtle ship (Keobuk Seon 거북선). The turtle ship is thought to have been the first ironclad battleship in history. It had armored plates and spikes and knives attatched to the plates to protect the crew of the ship and stop enemies from boarding the ship. The ship had a dragon head which cannons could be fired and smoke could be emitted to obscure the ship. Admiral Yi also trained his men and stocked up supplies. These preparations enabled his forces to be ready to fight when the Japanese unlike the rest of the Korean military.

Commander Yi Sun-sin won several naval battles with outstanding tactics and better ships. In the Battle of Hansan, the Joseon naval forces pretended to retreat, and making clever use of the geographical features of the seas near Hansan Island. The Korean fleet assumed a U-shaped crane formation with larger warships in the center and lighter ships on its wings. This formation is called ‘학익진’. The Japanese fleet was destroyed, and Admiral Yi’s forces counterattacked. The Japanese thus became unable to move supplies and had no choice but to halt their advance North.
There were brief peace negotiations, but the Japanese launched a second invasion and succeeded in destroying almost all of the Korean navy. Admiral Yi, who was once again falsely accused and demoted, was reinstated as commander of the very few remaining ships. However, with only a few ships he crushed the Japanese army. After the Japanese leader Toyotomi Hideyoshi died, the Japanese forces withdrew. While attacking the retreating Japanese forces in the seas off Noryang, Admiral Yi fell to an enemy shot, leaving the final words, “Don’t let the enemy know that I have died”. This shows the deep patriotism of Admiral Yi, as he feared that the news of his death would discourage the Korean army and encourage their enemies.
Without Admiral Yi, Korea would never have defended themselves against the Japanese invasions. He was a hero in dire times, and he along with King Sejong is remembered as one of the greatest historical figures of our country. You can see his statue at Gwanghwamun square.

All cherry, apricot, and almond blossoms already fell down and got replaced with white, crimson red and fuchsia azaleas. Last week it was 22 degrees outside, but today it was barely 8.
In Korea it is called 꽃샘추위. When the weather is jealous of the spring blooms.

Stella Jang (스텔라장) - Villain (빌런) - Vocab
Hello everyone !
I recently discovered Stella Jang, through her cover of the Ratatouille movie’s song “Le festin” (go check it out !). She is a South Korean singer that also studied in France (hence she speak a perfect French), and she has just released her album Stella I, along with the music video of her song Villain, that I love.
Therefore, I want to show you how I practice translating songs like this one !
(To be honest, it’s a fairly easy song to translate and memorise, as there are a lot of parts in english, and the vocab isn’t too complex ; you could try learning it !)
Tumblr media
Disclaimer : I am not Korean nor fluent in Korean, I am just teaching myself. So obviously there might be some mistakes (feel free to tell me if you see some). I’m just showing here what my train of thought is when I try to read and understand the lyrics. If you notice mistakes, please feel free to comment so I can correct them ! ~~~
We all pretend to be the heroes on the good side
