I keep hearing that Israel/the Jews haven't learned the lessons of the Holocaust, and I desperately want to know: what lessons? Was the Holocaust some sort of educational experience? Is that what the brutality, the humiliation, the psychological torture, the rape, the murders, the slavery was? An education? And what, dare I ask, is the consequence for those who did not learn the lessons of the Holocaust, whatever they are? Is it to repeat the class?

bring back the habits that made you happy as a child. there’s no reason you should ever have to give up harmless things that bring you joy. you don’t have to age out of having fun. finger paint. write mediocre fanfiction and questionable poetry. put chocolate chips in your waffles. sing in the bath, and while working in the yard, and while washing your hands. hammer tunelessly on a piano. spin in circles until you fall down. climb a tree. just because you’re now in charge of your life doesn’t mean you’re expected to give up on the things that make life feel worth living

one thing more people should know about those tradwife influencers (besides the fact that the ones without kids are often making fetish content) is that the ones who seem to somehow be able to afford caring for 6 kids without working just have rich husbands or are from a rich family and they probably have nannies handling those kids most of the time except for when they're like ok little timmy it's time to sit in a field and play with grass for mommy's tiktok video

thinking about may december again and the way the tabloid frenzy around them allowed gracie to obfuscate joe’s victimhood by prioritizing their shared identity as victims of overexposure. after gracie preys on joe, the media preys on them both, creating the illusion of a united front that makes reckoning with the initial harm done nearly impossible—it becomes safer to acquiesce to the narrative that they’re just like any other happy couple than to provide more gossip fodder by working through the ramifications of traumatic events in a public forum. “if we’re really in love as we say we are” calls out the public performance that has been foisted on joe, theoretically for their mutual benefit but materially at the sacrifice of joe’s ability to understand the unique violence done to him.

what the fuck are you guys idiots?!? this is because they couldn't remove the corpses of the murdered concert goers completely from the burned out cars. in Judaism it is extremely important that every part of a dead person is buried, there are multiple Jewish charitable organisations dedicated to finding every part of a dead person to bury!

I teach a lot of undergrads these days. About 3 years ago, I started dedicating a full two hours early every semester to a lecture and discussion about the history of the concept of plagiarism, because I was so annoyed that my students were walking into my classroom with the ironclad belief that they weren't plagiarizing when they were. Sure, the university had some official plagiarism guidelines that they could hypothetically read in a code of conduct somewhere, but they didn't. All they had was a vague memory of some teacher in Grade 8 telling them 'don't copy and paste from wikipedia' and a little learning from experience afterwards.
My hypothesis (which I was delighted to find is shared by Brian Deer, the journalist who broke the Wakefield story and who was the source Illuminaughti plagiarized in the hbomberguy video) is that the rise of automatic plagiarism checkers meant that, in the minds of many students, the formerly more abstract concept of plagiarism ('passing someone else's work off as your own') became a more concrete concept operationalized by the plagiarism checker. Under this concept, a text is plagiarized if (and, implicitly, only if) it is detected as plagiarism by the plagiarism checker. I have spent many hours with students sobbing in my office after I told them that their essays were plagiarized, and they all say that they thought changing the words around was sufficient to make it not plagiarized. Maybe some of them were lying for sympathy, maybe they all were, but I see no reason to not take them at their word. They think that what they're doing is dubious (hence the shame) but they don't think it falls under what they take to be the definition of plagiarism - the thing they can face sanction from the university for. They need to have it pointed out to them that there has been plagiarism for a lot longer than there have been automatic 'plagiarism checkers' and that as their professor, I'm the only plagiarism checker they really need to be concerned about.
It's really easy for me to get frustrated about this. It's frustrating to me that the American public high school system (the source of the majority of my students) has failed to prepare them to think about information, facts, and where they come from. It's frustrating that students can't be arsed to read the university's code of conduct and that the only way I know they have is if I read it straight to their faces. It's very frustrating to see the written scholarly word, a medium to which I have dedicated no small part of my life, treated like it's not worth anything. I'm frustrated to know that most students are not in my class, or in the class of someone else prepared to teach this lesson, so they'll go through their whole lives thinking that an uncited light paraphrase is enough to be worthy of credit. I'm frustrated that people with such a lax attitude towards information are my fellow voters. I once read a real fucking academic essay that was submitted for grades that cited a long quote from Arthur Conan Doyle that, when I traced it, was actually a quote from a fucking TJLC blog. That one isn't frustrating, I guess, that's just funny. It's not all bad.
I'm glad for the hbomberguy video. I hope it will make it easier to convince my students in future. It's too bad he didn't go into the academic context, but it's not like he was short on things to talk about already.
But this is a more general problem than just the video essay context shows. If we're not careful, the very concept of plagiarism can get eroded. I'm not a linguistic prescriptivist, either! If enough people start taking this new concept as plagiarism, that will be what it becomes. I think a world in which that notion of plagiarism is the relevant one would be a worse world. Don't let people erode the idea of credit. You're going to want it later.

y'know. it's okay even if addicts don't want to get clean. sometimes the goal is use reduction, sometimes it's using regularly but safely, sometimes the goal is staying alive. yeah, maybe rehabilitating and getting clean is the "healthier" option, but bodily autonomy comes first, always. forcing someone through detox or rehab when they are not willing is a traumatic experience that helps nobody.

60 YEARS IN TIME AND SPACE
Yes, it all started out as a mild curiosity in a junkyard. And now it's turned out to be quite a... quite a great spirit of adventure, don't you think?

“Sometimes, when Qui-Gon considers it, he is awed by his student’s steadfastness. Every person Obi-Wan ever truly loved – Anakin, Satine, Padmé, and Qui-Gon himself – came to a terrible end. Three of them died before his eyes; the other fell to a fate so bleak that death would’ve been a gift. The Jedi Order that provided the entire framework for Obi-Wan’s life was consumed by betrayal and slaughter. Every step of this long, unfulfilling journey is one Obi-Wan had to take alone…and yet he never faltered. As the rest of the galaxy burned, his path remained true. It is the kind of victory that most people never recognize and yet the bedrock all goodness is built upon.”

Something I’ll forever be mad about is how mcu takes canonically against the government comic characters and goes Um Actually They Work For The Big Man Now Sweaty :)))
Like the BIGGEST example of this is obvs mcu peter parker who is just. Ugh and a billionaire bootlicker now but hes not even the only one!!
They were pulling this shit as far back as the first avengers movie like You know MCU Clint Barton? Shield agent / assassin and ( I think ) implied ex-military whereas 616!Clint thinks SHIELD is creepy, constantly pulls anti government shady shit, very very anti authority, extremely anti killing ( unless B*ndis is writing him, but that doesn’t count. )
I’m sure this happens with other characters too, but I’m too tired rn to list them all.
Hell, we even see this with SHIELD to an extent as in how, in the MCU, is  Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division where as in the comics it was Supreme Headquarters, International Espionage, and Law-Enforcement Division, Pre-MCU synergy, and in how in the MCU, it is implied to be a US based organization whereas in the comics it’s a more shady global thing.
Like other people have probs said this better but there’s just. ugh

my advice for not going insane? try to do something every weekend. go to events, you’ll love events. and not like just hang out with ur friends or go clubbing , no, make a day out of going to some local market by yourself or attend some strange convention event you’ve never heard of. i cannot stress the importance of doing random events on a friday night or saturday or a sunday at r pm for mentally ill people especially if you’re depressed and have been searching for an anchor 2 tether yourself to. attend some events now
