Memorial, José Díaz Ramos, barrio de San Luis, Sevilla, 2016.
Anyone looking for a gripping true story to make into a film or book, look no futher! Díaz Ramos was one of the most fascinating personages of the mid 20th century. A banker from prosperous origins, he became a leader of labor radicals and eventually the head of the Spanish Communist Party. José Díaz Ramos was a key figure among the Republicans in the Spanish Civil War and a target of the fascists under Franco. His sister and the mother of his child both were murdered by the Falange. Suffering from cancer, near the end of the Civil War in 1938 he went to the Soviet Union for treatment. Evacuated from Moscow when WWII erupted, he sought refuge in Soviet Georgia where, depending on which story one believes, he died of cancer, committed suicide, or was murdered on orders of Stalin. Díaz Ramos was initially buried in Tiblisi, but his remains were repatriated to Spain in 2005, and his native Sevilla named him Hijo predilecto ("Favorite son").
