We Will Never Grow Old, chapter 19

Chapter 19 It's about to start So, here we were in Brazil, Jens and I, ready to take off. I've kind of always enjoyed football, like watching it but never playing it. I blame my PE teacher I had when I went to school. I was, according to her, too slow and too disorientated. Never mind. I stared at my reflection in the hotel room's bathroom mirror and sighed quietly. What was I really thinking about going to Brazil with Jens Keller? I'm sure my thoughts would have thought otherwise if I has stayed home, something like "you just can't run away from your problems!" Jens knocked on the bathroom door. "Greta, are you alright?" "Oh, I'm fine! Just...fixing my clothes! I'll be out in a second!" "Good. I don't want to leave you all alone hear." He laughed and answered a call on his mobile. I had to admit that I liked and disliked the present he had given to: a German football with number 14 and my name on it. It was a bit ironic and almost suspicious that he had chosen those two combinations. I put my hair up in a low ponytail and walked out of the bathroom just as Jens had finished his call. "Ah, you look lovely in that." He smiled. "Hopefully we'll add a fourth star in a couple of days." "Hopefully" I answered. "How come you're wearing number one and I number 14?" Jens raised on of his eyebrows. "That, my dear, is a secret. I think the cab is here. Let's go, shall we?" We offered each other a smile and I took my bag before we went downstairs to catch our taxi. "Wow, the weather is certainly quite hot here in Rio!" "What did you expect? You're in Brazil in the middle of the summer! It's not likely we will have snow." I tried to shield the sun from my eyes as we were trying to find our seats in the stadium. Even though the match hadn't begun, people were already stacking up the seats and the atmosphere was just amazing...if it really was like this before kickoff...I could only imagine it during the game. I stroked away the sweat that was forming on my forehead and swore over the heat. It felt like I had already consumed dozens of water. "Hey, I think I've found our seats!" "What?! I can't hear you! It's TOO noisy!" "OUR SEATS!" "OKAY!" I followed Jens and sat down next to him. "These are really good spots! How did you- I mean...it must have cost you a fortune!" "A man doesn't reveal his secrets." He blinked with his right eye. His hand stretched out towards mine in a slow gesture. Oh god... A slight wave of nervousness hit me as his hand was about to grip my hand. I snatched it away and tried to find an excuse for doing that. "Ehm, thank you by the way for the shirt!" I said and smoothed it out with my hands. "Thank you, if I didn't say it earlier. You really didn't have to do it for me or all...this" I said and gestured about our surroundings. Jens looked a bit shocked at first but it disappeared quite quickly. "You're welcome Greta, it was my pleasure." He nodded an smiled. "So...do you think we will win?" "I hope so. I made a bet with some of my colleagues." Jens laughed. "Is that so? You're funny." "Naaah, don't know about that...me? Funny? Not according to the students and my colleagues." "Maybe they don't know you that much then." I shrugged my shoulders. "Don't know..." "...I would like to get to know you more." What? I turned around and looked at him. "What...what do you mean?" "Greta, I-" A wave of a sudden outburst of applause and screaming echoed around the stadium as the players entered the field to do their warm ups. "I think they will start soon!" I shouted over the notice. "I can't wait!" Jens answered. Neither can I.
