What phrases do you love to see in fanfiction?
Seen all of the criticism around the use of words like 'orbs', 'member' and 'digits'.
Now, as a change of pace, what are phrases that SHOULD be used more often?

How to have a fun date in winter?
My couple is celebrating their first anniversary and I wanted to write about the two of them having a special day together. The thing is, it's winter and I don't know what people do in winter.
Where I live, winter is nothing but a little less hot than summer. I don't know what people do in a real cold weather.

Thoughts on an Encanto fanworks subreddit?
I think there's a lot of people here who create fanwork content for the fandom, and I thought it would be cool to have a subreddit to discuss common tropes/AU and some of the more popular fics. If the sub takes off, we could even collaborate to create a recommendations list like some of the other fanfic specific subreddits do.
Thoughts?

ADVICE FOR WRITING SMUT
I'm trying my hand at including smut in my fics, but I've never actually written it before. What words would be best, and what should I make sure to include??

Tell us why you like a ship deemed "problematic" by fans
Whether you think it is or isn't.
I've recently been on a Darling Hook binge. It's a Peter Pan ship. I decided to re-watch the 2003 film and read the "original" book, which got me into the ship.
I've seen others squirm about the ship because of the very thought of it. Just Captain Hook and Wendy-- even if she's an adult Wendy-- feels weird to many. Maybe it's "childhood ruining", but it is heavily implied in the original book that Wendy is attracted to Captain Hook. Most viewers remember Hook as the goofy, ugly versions of him like the 50s play, Disney version, and Pan, but he's a lot more sophisticated and savvy in the original book. He's not supermodel gorgeous but there is mention that there's an attractiveness to him.
Peter Pan always had a Freudian element to it. It's easy to read it as being about a girl wrestling with the cusp of puberty. Captain Hook is a dangerous but attractive older man who Wendy has a crush on. He's too dangerous to get close to, but the adventurous nature of being a pirate draws in Wendy. I don't see anything wrong with depicting an unrequited crush between Wendy and Hook. The 2003 film certainly took the subtext and ran with it.
The cusp of the ship itself takes place after Wendy returns back home. A significant amount of years later, a now adult Wendy meets Captain Hook again. Maybe she returns to Neverland only to find she no longer has an interest in the Lost Boys, maybe they meet in London long after Hook was deemed dead in Neverland. Edwardian era/WW1 era romance novel stuff happens. They probably split up in the end. It's sad, it's intense, I dig it.
I just struggle to write any fics about this ship myself because it feels like everyone else has already written every direction that it can go in. What could I bring new to it?

Relationship_advice - The fanfiction edition
Following the AITA post yesterday, I would like to create a place wherein the characters in your fanfic can search for advice about things that bother them in their relationship with their lovers, family, friends, co-worker, or even arch-enemy.
(I too hope this isn't against the rule. If it is please delete it. Thanks for the hard work, mods)
For those who don't know the general rule:
All posts must contain a title, a description of the problem, a TLDR and basic information such as ages, genders, relationship length.
Example:
My crewmate (M21) has been flirting with me (M21) for months, I like him too but the way he looks and acts is a little bit too similar to my brother (M21) who abused me during my childhood, to the point that I had to run away from home. I'm scared that if I dated him, things would go south eventually because of my trauma, what should I do?
Tl;dr: Boy wanna date me but look too much like my abuser, help?

Remove the chapter people seem to hate?
Hey guys, so I’ve been writing this long fic for over a year and a few months back I edited a lot of the initial chapters as I couldn’t read even a single line of it without cringing.
But ever since then I noticed that almost all new readers seem to stop at a particular chapter. I mean I read through the chapter today and I couldn’t find anything weird about it. In fact it was the WAY better than what that chapter was before.
But now I’m conflicted. Should I let the chapter go back to the way it was which somehow people had no problem with despite the terrible writing or should I just keep the current version which I think is better?
Has anyone of you gone through something similar? Where something you thought would improve your work kinda made people hate it?

I Finished Writing My First Ever Fic… Now I Just Have to Post It
It started out as just a fun little thing to do in my free time, for only my eyes, but as it slowly grew longer and longer over the course of a month I started to realize it was actually becoming something. Something good enough to post…? To the public where people can actually read it. Which is a scary thought, somehow… haha.
But I think I’d like to. I’m just trying to build up the nerve! The fic is a 9k word one-shot and I go back and forth on thinking it’s pretty darn good to absolute trash- if anyone can relate to that. I’ve gone through and edited it to hell and back and at this point I can admit to myself I’m just stalling.
Does anyone have any stories or advice from when you posted your first fanfiction? Were you nervous? How did you know when it was ready to go out into the world? I’m thinking once I post I’m just gonna be refreshing the page over and over to check stats, but another part of me says just turn your laptop off and let whatever happens happen.

Is it weird to add a scene based on a comment suggestion?
Got a comment on a fic that said they wished a certain thing happened in addition to the scene I had. And I LOVED the idea! Like I need it in my fic now lol
Is it weird to edit and add the scene they recommended. Should I shout out the commenter for the scene at all? The scene would have a moderate effect on the characters so it would feel like I’m stealing.
Anyone done this before?

Have any of you all made an alternate history for your fics?
I have, to get around offending people affected by recent historical or geopolitical events. Can't be offended by history if history never happened taps forehead.
The point of divergence is in 1991, where the Hardliner Coup against Gorbachev succeeds, due to the USSR being in possession of a secret stockpile of anomalous weapons.
This results in the USSR collapsing into ethnic civil war, with the central government even going as far as nuking the Caucuses in an attempt to crush the rebels.
This slowly results in a world similar to our own, but it is much darker than our world, where even the 'good guys(Although no nation in the world is truly 'good' even IRL, only shades of gray)' use terrible tactics against oppressive regimes.

How would you respond to the criticism "You're wasting story ideas/plots and (original) characters that you could use in creating something original?"
I think their reasoning is that creating an original work will be something that you entirely created on your own, thus you can be fully proud of it/yourself. And also that you have the possibility of getting paid for it.
What do you think?

A writer you look up to reads your work. How do you feel?
The author could be someone on AO3 whose work you really enjoy, the author of a show/book series/other media you write fanfic for, etc.
Part of me thinks I’d be honored, but another, larger part thinks I’d be mortified.

About secondary characters...
Hi everybody, I'm kind of new here, so I hope it's okay if I just ask your opinion like this.
How do you develop your secondary characters? Do you give them a big arch? A small one? Does it happen behind the scenes or in full view? Does it matter to you, both as a reader or writer?
I was editing a chapter I wrote that introduces my secondary characters and this question popped into my mind. I don't like it when secondary characters are just used as plot devices or "are just there" for the main characters. After all, we're all the main character of our life. So, although my secondary characters have personalities and I know where they're going, I'm wondering if I should give them a better arch and if so, if I should put it in between the lines or dedicate story time to it.
Thanks for everyone's input!

Writers of r/FanFiction, what do you put on your author's notes?
Hello everyone! I wanted to start off by saying I'm a pretty inexperienced AO3 fanfic writer. I literally posted my first fic less than a year ago, and I've been going on since then. In the author's notes, I tend to thank my readers for always leaving kudos and, sometimes, even comments, but I worry it might sound too repetitive.
So, what do you tend to include in your author's notes? I tend to write in some facts about my day (mostly when I'm posting on, I don't know, New Year's Eve or any other big celebration day), sometimes a bit of a commentary on that week's chapter, but nothing else. Might care to give me some ideas, please? :)
