coachella:

Anonymous: Where do you find your style inspiration?

Anderson .Paak: I think it comes from being a kid and the stuff I was into when I was younger, you know. I think it’s a reflection of my personality and my music. I like a wide range of things so I like to keep it colorful, you know, feel good. Have something that people talk about. I can’t be regular. I try sometimes but it’s hard. I just like to have fun.

Fashion Spotlight: Private Policy

Private Policy is a New York based menswear brand that aims to create visual and textural sensations with their collections. Creative Directors Haoran Li and Siying Qu (pictured below) created the brand at Parsons and focus their acclaimed looks on the Soho, Chinatown, and Lower East Side kids. Here’s more about the duo and Private Policy.

Who do you dream of when designing?

We envision the world of the New York downtown club kids, but design for their daywear.

When did you realize you can do this professionally?

When our collections were featured on Style.com and we started dressing celebrities such as Bella Hadid, Kendall Jenner, and Nick Jonas. We were truly amazed by the support we have in the press and with celebrities, as it further solidified that our passion has become a reality and inspired us to keep going.

What are you most proud of?

We’re proud to bring awareness to social issues through our creativity as each of our collections has a socio-political message. For every season, our collection is inspired by a political issue we feel that is important and hope to bring awareness to those issues.

If the brand would be a film or a TV series, what would the premise be?

“See the world with PRIVATE POLICY” The premise would be about meeting with young people who are making changes in different countries, striving to make the world a better place. We’ll have them show us their “world,” whether that be their bedroom, gathering place with their friends, or even favorite club. In the style of a Vice series, it would be very real and intriguing.

What do you listen to in the studio?

Everything! We listen to a range from hip hop and R&B to electronic to indie pop. Sometimes just the international news.

What makes you happy right now?

Fashion weeks have been crazy this season. This year, we have been to London, Paris, Shanghai, and, of course, New York. We’re looking forward to laying on the beach and drinking mojitos!

Who do you dream of when designing?

I dream of someone who is confident, colorful, and comfortable. They know how to look fabulous and they own it, without having to wear Spanx!

When did you realize you can do this professionally?

It happened when I was 13 and begin selling tote bags that I designed.

What are you most proud of?

I am most proud of the incredible education I was given as a working class boy from Liverpool by my parents and Ali McWatt in high school. Without their support I would have never made it this far. I believe that creative education is SO important to childhood development.

If the brand would be a film or a TV series, what would the premise be?

The show would highlight an industry disruptor in each episode, who is effecting change in the world. In addition to the profile on their work, we’d collaborate to design a look that would represent their cause.

What do you listen to in the studio?

A HUGE amount of audio books. I’m currently listening to The Life of Trees - it’s fascinating!

What makes you happy right now?

I’m finding happiness with the positive and progressive thinking that has been born from the terrible political turmoil that we are experiencing. The creative approaches to recent events have truly been inspiring. Also, a strong Negroni!
