So... Mu Qing. Thoughts? Feelings?

I’ll have you know I actually started writing a response to this the day i got it but I didn’t know what to write because I didn’t know how to encompass all my love for Mu Qing into text IM SO SORRY THIS IS LATE

MU QINGGGG he’s my favorite character in tgcf! I really love his character arc throughout all 5 novels. The complexity of his feelings towards Xie Lian/his relationship with Xie Lian is one of the more interesting parts to me because he does antagonistic actions towards Xie Lian yet he’s not really an antagonist at all (in my opinion). People are really divided over Mu Qing and while I personally land on the “i love him so much” side I understand why people dont like him, especially if they empathize a lot with Xie Lian (makes sense, XL is the protag). 

But I think Mu Qing’s struggles and feelings are very human and realistic and I actually find his issues more relatable to me as a reader. Mu Qing takes a mean sort of joy when he hears about Xie Lian’s misfortune because he’s smug about seeing the person that everyone thought was super wonderful go through shit. It’s bitchy of him of course, but also the feeling of smugness when you see someone get knocked down a peg is something I feel a lot of people have felt. He gives into peer pressure and doesn’t take Xie Lian’s side (something I don’t blame him for doing but it also wasn’t the “right” thing to do. Though in that situation, is there even a right choice?) As upsetting as Mu Qing’s actions are, I feel like they’re extremely understandable and that’s why people are turned off because he just hits too close to home

I never hated Mu Qing while reading TGCF because I understood why he made the choices he did and I was very happy he got a redemption arc at the end! I’ve seen people say that he’s an asshole who just did one good thing to get redeemed but I personally don’t agree with that. Mu Qing knows what he did in book 4 was wrong and he knows his feelings for Xie Lian are rooted in old resentment. But he does care about Xie Lian a lot, even though he thought Xie Lian didn’t see him as a friend (which was wrong but the fact that he did all those things while thinking Xie Lian still hated him says a lot)

This was super rambly I’m so sorry but AHH I just love Mu Qing so much! He’s easily taken the spot of my favorite TGCF character. Also he’s hot.
