It’s wrong to watch Banana Fish with expectations that it is good LGBT representation.
Like, seriously, you would be so appalled.
In literally the first chapter/episode, we are introduced to a gay pedophile, and he wasn’t the last. Whenever a male character experiences sexual abuse, it is by another man because for some reason women rapists didn’t exist in the eighties.
Regarding the main characters’ relationship, I’m aware that most fans call it romantic, but it’s really not. At the very least, it is canonically not a romantic relationship. Akimi Yoshida wanted to explore a relationship connected by feelings outside romantic ones. In which case, the closest description would be queerplatonic.

Is NO one gonna talk about how Rahul Kohli (Owen) and T’Nia Miller (Hannah) literally both did the Acting of the century in Bly Manor? There’s a few scenes they have a monologue or a dialogue and it’s? Mesmerising? Amazing acting start to finish????

RE: Dani and Jamie’s ending, I think people are missing the point. They didn’t have a “tragic” ending because they’re gay but rather because they had agency and chose to be the selfless heroes of the story: Dani saving Flora and all the trapped souls and Jamie standing by Dani knowing she would eventually “lose” her.
I fully recognize tragedy does affect gay couples disproportionately on TV. But tragedy is an inevitability in the horror genre and characters should be able to have agency, regardless of their sexuality. (In fact, it’s problematic if they don’t, as is often the case.) Dani was always going to make that choice because of everything that makes her who she is.
And they actually have the least tragic love story of anyone. Owen and Hannah never fully get together. Peter destroys Rebecca. Dani and Jamie have ten or so incredible years together and then really are with each other still, even if they can’t see each other.
Plus, it was actually set up early on: love vs. possession and beauty lying in mortality. That is why they’re the foil for Peter and Rebbeca. Dani and Jamie loved each other completely and that was enough for them. That is what makes theirs such a powerful, beautiful and rare love story.

I’d like to think that Viola represents a certain aspect of knowing when your time is up. It’s a brutal reality that far too many people die young or simply not having lived a full life. But instead of choosing to leave she held on. Only to see her husband look at her sister with lust, her sister grown to feel she was a burden, and for her daughter to barely know her and fear her.
Had Viola left at her time she would have left truly sad people, that cannot be ignored. But she would have left a loving husband who looked at her only, a dear sister who trusted her completely, and her daughter knowing she loved her so much and set aside beautiful things for her. They would have told stories about how strong and intelligent she was. Instead she became a sore memory. One you don’t discuss. Being human is never said go be easy. Letting go seems the hardest, but warped memories might be even the worse.
What we do know, is that loss is never easy for either side. It’s terrifying and cold. But it’s human also. It’s not weak. Getting through those hard times are what have made humans so resilient, and able to keep going, even when all we want to do is give up.
