I’m too tired to do this but How Did It End really is the story from beginning to end. The mutual suffering from mental illness, her retreat from the spotlight, trying to make themselves fit into each other’s lives, the attempts to play grown up, the intrusion of fame/celebrity, the breaks, the insinuation of infidelity, the gossip, the maybe allusion to a certain life event, the pulling away from each other, the prying eyes all around hunting for all the details…

thinking a lot about last summer's betty speeches and how jaime talked about the balance between the diaristic and fictional writing. i think the structure of this album really showcases that balance and i think it's soooo cool that some of us were able to pick up what taylor was putting down so clearly.

cause the way the standard edition is very straight forward and diaristic but the bonus tracks are more fiction oriented showcases the debate she was having in her head about which direction to go. iirc jaime said that she was going to strike a pretty even balance in such a way that she would be able to explore some of the more raw or difficult stuff in fiction but in a way that was undeniably about her, as to avoid the whole "is folklore about taylor" issue we had in 2020 (and still have in some parts of the fandom ooop!) and that's exactly what she did.

just goes to show if you really listen, taylor tells us everything. she's a mastermind in the truest form and she's so open with us about everything she does.

aaron_dessner: I'm so excited and honored to share that I have contributed to my dear friend and collaborator @taylorswift's brilliant 11th album -- a 31 song double album / anthology called The Tortured Poets Department. We started working on these songs over two years ago and it feels like they have kept us company and evolved in beautiful and unexpected ways through so much life lived during this process. It's hard to believe Taylor and I have now recorded over 60 songs together (17 across this anthology!!) in the 4 years since we began working together on Folklore in 2020. I am forever grateful to Taylor for sharing her insane talents with and trusting me with her music. I believe these songs are some of the most lyrically acute, intricate, vulnerable and cathartic Taylor has ever written and I am continually astonished by her skills as a songwriter and performer.

I also want to thank the incredible @jackantonoff for his open hearted and open door collaboration with me through all these many projects and all of my talented friends who continue to contribute generously to my work. I could never have made all this music without a village of friends supporting me -- especially the engineering talents @heyjonlow @bellaicecream and @sharp_stick and as always my brother @brycedessner made many vital contributions and other friends like @900x @tingalayo @lanzprojects and @mooserob who have helped me so much over the years. taylor describing my boy only breaks his toys as being so valued in the beginning of a relationship and then being broken/devalued later on and clinging on how it was in the beginning… makes me think about her writing so many songs about the beginning of their relationship and how the stars aligned for them to be together when things started going south 🫠

ok so when she says cause fuck it I was in love I think is actually the thesis of this entire album. Like the red herring everyone thinks it’s mostly about mh but like the entire point is she was so desperate to be fine after her ltr disintegrating that she was willing to talk about anything else and feel anything else and do anything else than feel that but “fuck it I was in love” is such a moment of defeat and that tension literally weaves through the entire album of it’s not about her ltr but it all is!!

having so many thoughts about the nature of storytelling right now. about how the story of a girl driven to insanity is more compelling and less palatable than a story of someone scorned and heartbroken. about how public perception of art bleeds into the life of the artist. about living for the record instead of recording about the life. about what makes a good album and how that intersects and conflicts with what makes a happy human. about the toll that takes on a woman who, at the end of the day, just wants to be heard and understood, but feels terrified to let anyone down with the truth. IDK YOU GUYS

I just think TTPD is not an album you can understand and fully digest in one listen or even a few listens and that's what makes it so great. It is accessible in terms of its melodies and high-level storytelling but the lyrical details are poetic and complex. I'm really just so excited to spend a lot of time with this album.

So far I feel like this album started off very like, standard 1989 synths and it’s sort of… descending into twisted rage and insanity and being sung through gritted teeth? Like it’s REALLY cool
