not to get political but im begging you guys to stop coming to hawaii. in maui theyre asking to put a ‘pause’ on flights bc we literally do not have enough room or staff to service you. the roads are so full that its causing a major backup when ppl need to get to work.

on top of this, i heard that by September? theyre expecting to get rid of the mask rule (if 70% of ppl are vaccinated/all goes well) but ill be honest w/ you, i know many locals arent getting the vaccine and i know plenty of tourist arent gonna take the necessary precautions.

Reasons to watch We Are Lady Parts

Allow me to introduce you to one of the best comedy shows I’ve watched, called We Are Lady Parts (2021) which is:

written by Nida Manzoor, a muslim woman of color 

follows a Muslim female punk band – called Lady Parts – who are on a mission to find a lead guitarist

features an all female cast of main characters, all of whom are women of color. most of the background characters are also poc 

has a queer muslim character

a lot of the characters wear hijab (!!!!!), but it’s also shown that even in the same family women can choose not to wear hijab (thank god for Nida Manzoor)

has a beautiful found family feel to the band

features some hilarious, kickass tracks such as “Voldemort under my headscarf” and some great covers

It’s so witty and charming, and genuinely funny with clever writing and beautiful characters 

no stereotypes here! the band is made up of 5 very different women, but each is great in her own way. The main character is a 26 year old PhD student, and has the cutest dynamic with her parents

touches on some very relatable topics for muslim women while maintaining a good sense of humor 

their music is actually pretty damn good? like I’d definitely go to one of their gigs and make heart eyes at Saira and the rest of them the entire time?!

currently obsessed with this painting by jan victor, “anna, madre di samuele, prega nel tempi”. typically a female subject is subjected to a male gaze, but here the subject is surveyed by God: this is emphasized by the shaft of light falling on her penitent face and folded hands. you might think hannah is entirely alone in the presence of God. however, there is still a man- eli who “observed her mouth” and thought she was drunk (1 samuel 1:12-13). so she is still being surveyed, though her surveyor is the background, thrown into shadow. unlike secular paintings, however, the male gaze within the painting is not what defines her, as the viewer has the context of the biblical story to know that eli’s assumption is incorrect- hannah is not drunk, she is praying, with the fervour of prayer. thus gaze reverts back to the unseen force and illumination of god, and his present and future blessing on hannah. this blessing both physically and spiritually illuminates hannah, who will receive this blessing in the form of a child, the answer to her prayer, her grief and her desire.
