You know, I feel like non romantic/gen fics don’t get enough love in this community. There’s plenty of good fanfics of the egos out there that don’t revolve around romance and have very plot-centric stories worth looking into, so I’d like to shed some light on a few.
I’m going to go off and find some quotes to doodle, and I implore some of you to do the same! Find some of your favorite non romantic fic scenes, and leave a quote of theirs in my inbox. The only things I ask is that it cannot be YOUR fic, make sure each quote is a different story, and if there is some romance, it is not the main part of the story.
Or, if you can’t think of any quotes, think of some tropes you’ve read and thoroughly enjoy. One of my favorites is Anti being hurt and torn apart by his glitching, its always is a pleasure to read B)
Thought this might be fun and help some people who want to read about the egos, but don’t necessarily enjoy the romance stuff.
I’ll sketch out the ones that I find interesting, and will be sure to cite the fic as well :)

Swap Across the CrystalVerse Chapter 25: Epilogue
Read Swapboys | Crystal’s AUs|
Read SITCV | SATCV Masterpost | AO3 Link
Alt and Jackie find themselves in a pitch black space. And yet, somehow, they can still see themselves and each other. Just... nothing else.
Anti appears behind them. "Okay," he says. "Let's--"
And then, suddenly, someone else appears. Bro, with Mag still slung over his shoulder. And behind him, another Anti with an eye-patch and green scarf. "Okay," that Anti says. "Let's--"
And then the two Antis lock eyes. And they stop.
Alt stops as soon as he hears the other voice and puts an arm up to hold Jackie back behind him protectively.
Bro's eyes meet Alt's and he breaks out into a huge grin. "Y-You're okay!"
Alt and Jackie look relieved, "Chase!" they say almost at the same time. They all look like they wanna run towards each other- but they glance at the antis warily.
"... how come you guys got an Anti too?" Bro asks, tilting his head.
"Bro- this one hasn't even met us!" Jackie says.
"what??? How does that work??"
"Heh. You guys think you're the only versions of yourselves out there?" The Anti with Bro grins. "Didn't you see that shit back there? Lots of different worlds that are all pretty similar. I thought I was the only one of me, though."
The Anti with Jackie and Alt nods. "Same. Maybe it's just the two of us."
"Maybe."
The Anti with Bro has a short sleeve shirt, and behind his tightly-wound scarf there are bandages around his neck. The Anti with Alt and Jackie is wearing long sleeves, and his scarf is looser, showing a bare neck beneath it.
"So." Short-sleeve Anti gestures at his neck. "You... took care if it, then? Jack is safe?"
Long-sleeve Anti nods. "From them, at least. We're having some trouble with IRIS. Did those guys fuck with you?"
"Oh yeah. Give 'em hell."
"Oh believe me, I will." A pause. "So... how'd you meet these guys, then?"
Alt watches the conversation with a furrowed brow. "...I feel like you are being really causal about this and its kinda freaking me out..."
Jackie looks like he's gonna have a crisis thinking about other hims that are like him in the moment.
Bro adjusts Mag on his shoulder and genuinely seems unbothered. He wouldn't be able to comprehend what all this means anyways.
Bro then looks at long sleeved Anti and grins, "Oh! We got blasted into his universe by some black magic glitchy fuckery and he helped to save our friends from the messed up guys in your universe! Which... I'm guessing are the same considering how you two are talking."
"I don't understand," Alt says, glitching forward and in between the two Antis. "How... are you guys the same but- you don't know what the other did? Aren't... you from the same world? The same things happen to you and... that's what makes you.. you- right?"
"Well... yeah, I guess when you put it that way," Long-sleeve Anti says. "We have to have shared most experiences."
"Otherwise we wouldn't be so similar." Short-sleeve Anti nods. "I think I understand. The moment you guys showed up in our universe, it must've split in two--the version where you showed up, and the version where you didn't. That's why he doesn't know you guys. Hey, d'you remember Marvin's museum heist? With that weird ass doorway in the middle of the exhibit?"
Long-sleeve Anti nods. "What? Something happen there?"
"Marvin shot his magic at me while in that doorway. That somehow summoned these guys and two of their friends."
"Ah. That didn't happen with me. I glitched out of the way just before. So that's the point of divergence."
"ooh!" Alt says, eyes sparkling as he understands. "It's... its a timeline split! Okay... okay that makes sense!" He laughs, "I dunno why that's easier for me to wrap my head around..."
"Would make sense," Short-sleeve Anti muses. "Marvin got really fucking obsessed with other worlds after that. If he never met these guys... none of that would've happened." Sadness flashes across his expression. "Jack would be safe right now..."
Long-sleeve Anti glitches over to him. "You'll get him back," he says. "I know what we're capable of, and I know you can get him back." Short-sleeve Anti smiles. "...thanks."
Bro and Alt look kinda guilty and look away from the tender Anti moment while Jackie blinks a bit in confusion.
Alt looks back to the Anti they know with determination, "...my offer still stands you know. If you ever need back up we can be-" He then cuts himself off and it dawns on him that... he can't make that promise anymore. The TRVLR is gone. Frustrated tears perk up in his eyes and he quickly tries to blink them away. "...well... n-nevermind can't... really u-universe hop anymore..."
Short-sleeve Anti raises an eyebrow. "I'm guessing something happened to your TRVLR."
"Sounds like some IRIS shit," Long-sleeve Anti mutters.
"Ha! That's exactly what it is. They got it from another world with them, stole it."
"Nice." Long-sleeve Anti pauses. "You don't... think it's related to the rifts, do you? This TRVLR thing?"
"I don't think IRIS is capable of doing shit like that. But... they might be linked." Short-sleeve Anti looks at the guys. "Well? What happened?"
Alt curls his hands into fists, magic flickering and sparking around him in anger. "...we were tricked. We thought the TRVLR got broken during a trip we took to that medieval world I told you about which is... such a long story. But- we thought it would be okay to take Jackie to go meet his superhero self! But then... it kept breaking- taking us to new places instead of taking us home... and we found out it was all a plan to bring the TRVLR to the universe we were in b-before all this rift stuff happened... and he, another Anti... he took Mag's magic and he destroyed the TRVLR and said he was gonna go d-delete other universes and... we couldn't stop him. The TRVLR tried to warn us! it said the universe was under quarantine but... I..." He gets angrier as he looks towards the still passed out Mag, "Mag got a hold of me right away and I- I couldn't warn anyone or get away and he... he-" Alt takes a couple shaky breaths to keep from exploding in anger, or bursting to tears. He honestly feels on the brink of both. "He got it and... We got sucked into the rifts and separated in the places you both found us. I... I dunno where he is now... who knows how many things he might have destroyed..." His shoulders shake and his voice breaks as he whispers out, "A-and it's all my fault...!"
"Hey! Alt d-don't say that," Bro says gently. "None of us could have prepared for this..."
The Antis stare, eyes getting wide as Alt tells his story. Then they look at each other.
"Must've been one of the places with a connection, right?" Long-sleeve Anti says.
"Yeah." Short-sleeve Anti nods. "Couldn't have been the place with the facility, I don't think the Anti there cares for deleting worlds. Same with that place with the time loop city. So... the other one."
"Yeah." Long-sleeve Anti nods. "That must be why They sent out a call. Because that Anti escaped. He can't do that much, though, can he?"
"...connection... call... what are you guys talking about?" Jackie tries to ask.
"Some universes have connections to other worlds," Long-sleeve Anti says.
"It's hard to grasp, I know, just... accept it and it'll be easier," Short-sleeve Anti adds.
"Oh.. okay," Jackie replies meekly.
Short-sleeve Anti frowns. Then he turns to Alt. "Your brother's right," he says in a quiet voice. "Nobody could have prepared for that. It's not your fault, okay? He was already working on a way out. He would have found it eventually, even if you didn't show up. It's not your fault. Okay? For some reason, people love to blame themselves for things that others have done. Not sure why. All it does is let the actual perpetrators escape blame-free, because they don't usually feel the guilt that decent people do. You gonna let this guy get away blame-free while you take it all?" He shakes his head. "It's not your fault. Anyone else in your situation would've been tricked, I'm sure. Even me. Or, uh, us." He gestures at himself and the other Anti.
Alt is quiet and is fighting back tears.
Bro sees how this is affecting Alt and he throws Mag to the... well what they're standing on- hard to tell with all this black. And then hurries over to come and hug him.
Alt seems resistant at first but eventually leans in, sniffling. He laughs half-heartedly at Anti's point and shakes his head. "... no...you're right I just... feel responsible..."
Bro shakes his head rests his on top of Alt's. "You're responsible for your actions only, Alt. No one else's."
Alt snorts and rolls his eyes. "Okay, Dr. J."
"He has very good points! That's why he gets paid to say this stuff!" Bro laughs as he nudges Alt. Then, he takes in all the blood on him and gasp. "Holy shit Alt-!"
From the combination of being tossed to the floor like wet garbage and the sound of the siblings bickering, Mag's eyes finally blearily open. He pushes himself up and has a nice purple bruise forming next to his eye on his left side. He notices the fact they're in complete darkness and there's two Antis and blinks super slowly, trying to process. "...the fucking hell is happening...?" He mutters dazedly.
The moment Magnificent is awake, the two Antis snap their attention to him. "So... who the hell is this guy?" Long-sleeve Anti asks. "A Marvin?"
"Yeah, as bad as ours," Short-sleeve Anti growls. "I put him on the list."
"Oh." Whatever that means, it apparently immediately sours Long-sleeve Anti's opinion of Magnificent, and he glares at him.
"...I dunno what the list is but I'm intrigued... maybe I should have a villains list." Bro muses.
Alt laughs, "Why bother? We all know Mag is at the top."
"Not true! ...Overdose is up there too. ...and that King bastard." Chase says with a shudder.
Short-sleeve Anti glitches over to Mag, crouching by him where he's lying on the black 'ground.' "Here's the deal, Mag," he says. "Right now, you're somewhere that only I--or this other version of me--can navigate. We could very easily leave you here, and you wouldn't be able to do shit about it. So, I suggest you play nice. Otherwise we might decide to just take these three with us when we leave. And keep in mind, your mind tricks don't work on me. Either version."
Magnificent stumbles back as short-sleeved Anti appears in front of him and looks between the two with even wider eyes. "T-There's fucking two of you?!" He gasps and tries to back up. He tries to save face by glaring at the Anti in front of him and glances at the other. But, eventually he sighs and frowns at Anti. "... I suppose that's do-able. I can humor you... until you idiots figure out a way out of this mess, I guess."
"Man- can't believe Mag is actually scared of you guys," Jackie grins.
"I am not-!" Magnificent tries to argue.
"Heh." Short-sleeved Anti gives a wicked grin, then glitches back over to the rest. "Well. Clearly, you guys all need to get home. Though I know what you'll say. About that other Anti who's running loose through the multiverse. You'll want to help, won't you? Or... at least you two will." He nods at Bro and Alt. "I'm not as familiar with you, Jackie."
"I'm starting to realize I might not be the... adventuring type," Jackie says quietly, rubbing at his arm. "B-But I'd like to help where I can...?"
Bro smiles sadly at Jackie and brings him into a side hug, "You've been doing amazing, Jackie..."
"They can't exactly help if they don't have a way to go to other worlds, though," Long-sleeve Anti points out.
"Yeah. Which is why we need to ask for Their help. If anyone can figure out something to fix all of this, it's Them."
Alt blinks in confusion and looks between the Antis, "umm... who's them?"
Even Mag's eyes spark curiously.
"Oh... just the most powerful being in this branch of the multiverse," Long-sleeve Anti says, giving a little chuckle.
"They sensed when the rifts started opening up and sent out a call for anyone who might be able to help with that," Short-sleeve Anti adds. "I answered. And it seems like I also answered."
"Sounded urgent," Long-sleeve Anti shrugs. "Especially since They mentioned people were out of place.”
"Hold on a second, They'll probably be coming here any moment," Short-sleeve Anti says.
Jackie notices it first, followed shortly by Alt. The area around them is pitch black, except for a small green dot of light in the distance. It grows bigger, getting closer. Baseball size, then basketball size, then beachball size. It keeps going. The size of a sofa, the size of a room.
Mag senses it more than sees it as it approaches. When he first entered that world with the horror creatures, he felt Cait Coill's power was an ocean. This is like a million oceans... a million oceans of acid. The closer it gets, the more clear it is that he does not want this power in his body. The size of a house, the size of a building, and the green glow just keeps getting bigger and bigger and bigger until the whole sky above them seems to be glowing green. And then, the green glow rolls. A rim of blue appears, followed by an expanse of black. It is a massive, glowing green eyeball.
Magnificent's jaw drops, shuddering as he feels the power wash over him.
Alt and Jackie gasp loudly. Alt tries to glitch back but realizes soon enough it's futile. They're becoming the very sky themselves.
Bro is confused at first, "...why is the sky glowing green." Then, he sees the rim of blue and black and he makes a pog face then points up at the sky, "GIANT SAM??!"
Alt bursts into awed breathless laughter, "i... I guess so…!"
"Yeah." The two Antis say in unison, nodding identically.
"What the fuckkk??" Jackie breathes.
{I AM SORRY IF I'M FRIGHTENING YOU, BUT I CANNOT CHANGE MY SIZE OUT HERE BEYOND THE WORLDS,} a voice says in all their minds. {I WILL KEEP THIS SHORT. IT IS NOT SAFE TO BE AROUND ME FOR TOO LONG OUT HERE. I KNOW ALL THAT HAS HAPPENED. I'M SORRY THAT IT HAS HAPPENED THIS WAY.}
"..i..it's okay," Alt tries to reply.
"But, the Antis said you could help us, right?" Bro asks hopefully.
{INDEED,} Sam says. {I CAN OPEN A WAY HOME FOR YOU.}
"What about their TRVLR?" Short-sleeve Anti asks.
"And the Anti that's going to fucking 'delete' worlds?" Long-sleeve Anti adds.
{DO NOT WORRY ABOUT HIM YET,} Sam says. {HE HAS GAINED THE POWER TO JUMP THROUGH WORLDS, BUT DESTROYING THEM WILL TAKE MUCH, *MUCH, MUCH* MORE. AS FOR THE DEVICE... THAT WILL TAKE SOME TIME. IT WOULD BE BEST TO FIND THE PARTS THAT HAVE BEEN SCATTERED, AND EVEN I WILL HAVE DIFFICULTY WITH THAT.}
"I-If you could take us back to the world where we found it- we could just grab another one," Alt says, stepping forward. "There were so many more just lying around! All they need to work is my magic!"
{BUT YOU WOULD LOSE ALL THE WORLDS YOU HAVE BEEN TO BEFORE,} Sam says. {AND ALL THE PEOPLE YOU HAVE MET THERE. UNLESS YOU REMEMBER THE NUMBERS, THE ONLY WAY TO FIND THEM AGAIN WOULD BE THROUGH TRIAL AND ERROR.}
"Couldn't you just give them a device with all the worlds marked?" Short-sleeve Anti asks.
{NO. MY POWER IS NOT... PRECISE LIKE THAT. IT IS MUCH MORE BLUNT.}
Alt deflates and sighs, holding his arms, "But then... didn't we already lose them? Our TRVLR was smashed into bits... How can you possibly find every piece and put them back together?" He bites his lips, feeling the pinprick of tears again, "...I don't want to lose our way to them... but.. i...i dunno..."
{IT IS ALWAYS YOUR CHOICE,} Sam says. {I PROMISE YOU, I WILL BE ABLE TO FIND EACH ONE. I SEE EVERYTHING, AFTER ALL. BUT THE PRECISION OF GATHERING AND PUTTING THEM TOGETHER WILL REQUIRE AID. PERHAPS FROM ONE OF THE GLITCHES.}
The two Antis look at each other.
{BUT IF YOU WISH FOR SOME OTHER SOLUTION, I WILL BE ABLE TO HELP WITH WHATEVER YOU COME UP WITH.}
Alt is quiet for a second and Bro comes up and puts a hand on his shoulder. Eventually he sighs and looks up at Sam with a sad smile. "...I guess I'm gonna have to trust you guys... but I think I can do that...."
{VERY GOOD,} Sam says.
"Well?" Long-sleeve Anti asks the other. "You or me? I think I have more free time."
Short-sleeve Anti shakes his head. "I'm already involved in all this multiverse shit. I... have stuff to do back home, but I think I'm more qualified."
"Hmm." Long-sleeve Anti purses his lips. "I guess... I've only really talked to that man who glitched into the In-Between and that young boy. You have these guys, they've visited your world and everything. But are you sure? What about your Jack?"
Short-sleeve Anti hesitates. "I... have people who are helping. And I'm sure I can do both at the same time. Take care of your Jack, okay? I'd... rather that happen."
"If you're sure," Long-sleeve Anti says quietly.
{REMEMBER, ALT BRODY,} Sam says. {YOU CANNOT WORRY ABOUT EVERYTHING. YOU CAN ONLY TRUST YOU'RE CAPABLE OF HANDLING IT.}
Alt's eyes widen and he looks back at Sam with shock. "... You... was that... you? In the world where..." He swallows shakily. "...where i was corrupted...? or was that Sam... merely passing along the message?”
{THAT WAS ME,} Sam says, a smile in Their mental voice. {THAT IS THE WORLD I HAIL FROM. JACK IS A GOOD FRIEND OF MINE... AND ANTI IS MY MISTAKE. BUT THAT IS A LONG STORY.}
"You're from that world??" Bro asks, "How... does that work? How did you go from a tiny thing back there to this... massive fucking thing?!" He spreads out his arms as wide as he can to emphasize his point.
Alt looks surprised too but does smile hearing about Jack. And shudders thinking about that Anti...
{OH... I CAN BE THIS BIG BACK THERE, TOO,} Sam says. {IN FACT, THIS IS MY NATURAL SIZE. I SHRINK DOWN FOR OTHERS' CONVENIENCE. BUT I CANNOT OUT HERE. IT IS THE TRADEOFF FOR THE POWER I MUST USE TO OPEN A DOOR TO OTHER WORLDS.}
“Whattt???” Bro says, dumbfounded.
“Do the guys back there know about that?” Jackie asks curiously.
{THEY KNOW I AM UNUSUAL,} Sam says. {THOUGH THEY DO NOT KNOW JUST HOW UNUSUAL. JACK DOES, I AM TELLING HIM EVERYTHING SLOWLY NOW THAT HE CAN HEAR MY VOICE NATURALLY. BEFORE THAT, COMMUNICATION WITH HUMANS WAS DIFFICULT. EVEN NOW, IT IS SLIGHTLY UNSAFE THAT YOU HAVE NOT ACCLIMATED, BUT I FEEL THIS WAS AN URGENT CASE.}
"We should get them home then, shouldn't we?" Short-sleeve Anti asks, nodding towards the four others.
{SOON, YES. PERHAPS IF THEY HAVE A COUPLE MORE QUESTIONS, BUT KEEP THEM SHORT.}
Alt is quiet for a bit before he looks back up, “…how will you find us again? …none of us can get to here. And now we can’t travel to other universes… unless we use that doorway but… I don’t trust that thing one bit.” He glares at Mag who quickly looks away.
{I CAN OPEN UP A RIFT FOR A SLIGHT MOMENT OF TIME,} Sam says. {I TRUST ANTI TO GO THROUGH AND DELIVER ANY MESSAGES OR ITEMS TO YOU.}
Short-sleeve Anti nods. "And I can get back to my home from anywhere."
“Damn lucky-“ Jackie giggles.
Alt nods, “…alright. Then… I guess we’re all… good.” He still looks sad and uneasy about all this, anxiety about that escaped Anti clawing at his gut.
“Our world is gonna be… safe, right? From that crazy Anti?” Bro asks quietly.
{YOUR WORLD IS FAR FROM HIS,} Sam says. {ON A DIFFERENT BRANCH. IT WILL BE DIFFICULT FOR HIM TO REACH IT. ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE. IT IS A MIRACLE THAT YOU HAVE BEEN ABLE TO REACH THIS BRANCH AND HOP THROUGH AS EASILY HAS YOU HAVE.}
"If you see that crazy guy, I'll be right behind him," Short-sleeve Anti says. "Gonna fucking kick his ass for trying to reach you guys."
Long-sleeve Anti raises an eyebrow. "You'd go that far?"
Short-sleeve Anti pauses. "I guess I would."
“Awww have you grown a soft spot for us Anti~?” Bro taunts playfully.
Alt smiles wide, laughing along. “…it’s good to know we can count on you, Anti.”
Magnificent makes a gagging motion and Jackie kicks at him. Mag hisses at him.
Short-sleeve Anti gives a small smile. And at that, so does the other one. "Well... we should head home, shouldn't we?" he says.
"We should. And you should too." Short-sleeve Anti nods at the four of them.
{THEY WILL HAVE TO GO FIRST,} Sam says. {AFTER ALL, THEY NEED AN ENTRANCE, WHILE YOU TWO CAN GO BACK AS YOU WISH.}
“I guess… this is goodbye for now, then.” Bro says with a sad smile.
Alt looks back at Sam, “thanks then… for all your help.” He smiles back at the Antis, “And you two too.”
Jackie steps up next to his friends and laughs nervously, “Dunno if I’ll be doing another one of these things again anytime soon but… thanks.”
Mag stays quiet and doesn’t look at anyone, rubbing at the bruise on his face.
The Anti in long sleeves nods. "Nice to meet you all. I can see why this other me got attached."
The Anti they know rolls his eye. "You guys stay safe. I hope I'll see you all soon--to give you your TRVLR again." He glances at Mag. "And you." He doesn't say anything, just glares threateningly.
Magnificent still flinches slightly- which have the other swaps giggling.
Then Anti looks back to the others. "Here's to the future."
{WHEN YOU ARE READY...} A bit of green lightning snaps down from the Sam high above. A small tear appears in the pitch-black of the Space In-Between, and through it... a familiar sight. Home. {STEP THROUGH. GOOD LUCK, AND GOODBYE.}
The swaps all watch in awe as the lightning strikes and then perk up at the small glimpse of home. Calling to them.
Bro smiles and offers his hands to the others. “Together?”
Alt rolls his eyes with a chuckle. “Cheesy. But… yeah.” He takes Bro’s hand.
Jackie grins, squeezing Bro’s hand, “One last hold for the road! Just in case it’s bumpy~”
“By the gods your sentimentality makes me sick,” Mag grumbles. “Can we move on?”
“Don’t be bitchy just cuz you’re jealous, Marv.” Jackie says, sticking out his tongue at Mag.
Magnificent snorts but hides his look of anger. He teleports ahead of the others- just long enough to linger in the other side before he disappears from sight.
The other swaps all roll their eyes and laugh- then, they step back through the portal, together.
They find themselves in a familiar place when they walk through the rift. The Brody brothers' apartment, right where they left.
Magnificent is not with the three of them. When he walked through, he appears right where he left as well. In his warehouse.
The boys all look at each other and then collapse into different chairs or places to sit around the living room. They sit together in a long long silence- Their exhaustion palpable in the air.
Finally, Bro speaks up, looking at Jackie. “…did you mean that back there, Jackie? That you don’t think you can… do these trips anymore?”
Jackie doesn’t meet their eyes as he shrugs. He laughs uneasily. “Well… guess we do have a break now but… y-yeah… I think I… I need to step out of these.” Frightened tears come into his eyes. “…in the last world… I… I almost died- if Anti hadn’t found me in time… I… I…” he takes a shaky breath and holds his arms. “….all I could think about was Zara and the kids… never knowing what happened to me. I… I dunno if I can do that again…”
Bro and Alt look at their friend with sadness and understanding.
Then, the door to apartment opens quietly- before there’s a gasp, then an angry female voice yelling, “Jackie Finnigan Mann!! Where the hell have you been?!”
Jackie’s head snaps back to look at who’s at the door- it’s Zara. She looks a mix between angry and relived. “One day at most my ass! Where-?!”
She gets cut off as Jackie clambers to get to her and almost knocks her over by hugging her tightly. “I’m sorry Zara! I’m so so sorry, love…” he whispers, voice breaking as he holds her tightly.
Zara blinks slowly but then quickly hugs him back, “oh… love… you’re trembling…!” She rubs his back and kisses his cheek, “…I’m just glad you’re okay…” She looks to Bro and Alt with confusion, “what… happened?”
Bro shakes his head, “it’s a long story, z… we can catch you up in a bit. I think we all need… some time.”
Zara nods and squeezes Jackie before letting go- “here… you all look terrible and exhausted… come over to our house and I’ll make you all dinner okay?” Then she blinks and gasps, “holy fuck Alt! You’re hurt!”
Alt blinks slowly and looks down, “…oh yeah-“
“Okay- first a trip to Ollie, then I’ll make you all dinner.” Zara says sternly.
Alt laughs hollowly and nods, “okay… guess I can’t argue with that… Ollie has Glitches after all…”
“Isn’t he not supposed to treat you now that you both are dating?” Bro asks with a smirk.
Alt blushes and Zara snorts, “I think he’ll make an exception. Or we’ll see the other dooms I don’t care just-! C’mon you lot.” She leads Jackie out and Bro soon staggers up to follow after. He pats Alt on the shoulder and then walks out the door.
Alt lingers for a second, noticing the empty feeling in his pocket more than ever. But, soon enough he follows after his friends.
None of them had to do this alone.

Alright so uh, fair warning, I'm not a big lyric type so the Alt/Byte comparison is purely based on vibes >.>
The two songs are Out of Control by Metaroom and Dead Dead Demons by Kotori
It might not be the usual type of music that gets recommended for characters, but (to me) Alt feels like he would be the type to enjoy hyperpop and industrial ^_^
Omg yes!! Dead dead demons is DEF Byte vibes!! This is probably stuff that Alt plays at his shows! That and a bunch of glitch hop stuff which is some of my favs!!
Out of control is very Byte coded too but I think dead dead demons is such a good vibe!!
I dunno what industrial music is but hyper pop yeah!! Alt likes a lot of funky beats and glitchy stuff! And… set it off XD
Also i just say I’m so touched and like buzzing that our story gave you brain rot?? That’s the nicest thing ever ahh I’m gonna be riding that high all day <3

Swap Across the CrystalVerse Chapter 24: Many Roads Diverge

Bro lands in the living room again. It's night outside. The room is empty, with no sounds at all to tell him people are nearby.
Bro hurries to his feet and looks around with his fists up- expecting a fight. Only to be met with... silence. He blinks and then rubs at his head. "...fucking hell... this is messing with my brain- what is happening??" He whispers to himself.
The silence stretches onwards.
"H...hello?" He calls out in the house. "Is... a-anyone there?"
No answer.
But... the lights are on upstairs. He can see it coming from down the staircase.
"...okay..." Bro whispers to himself. "... I might be making the 'white-guy-in-a-horror-movie' clique move here but... gotta start somewhere I guess?" He hurries up the stairs.
There are several doors upstairs. They look like bedrooms, maybe a bathroom, but he doesn't need to check them all. The door closest to the stairs is slightly ajar.
And a spray of red liquid spilled across the floor, a distinct coppery smell in the air.
Bro freezes as he sees the red and ends up staggering back a little. "H-Holy shit..." He whispers, looking dumbfounded and even a little bit sick as he covers his mouth.
A voice comes from that room, sounding muffled. "Is... is someone there?" it calls. He recognizes Chase's voice from the past two times he'd been in this house. "Hello? I-is it safe?"
Bro looks up and then seems- hesitant. Is he... in the same place again or is... this time different? He's not sure... but- what if he needs help. He swallows and then steps forward, trying to avoid the red. "I... I think so? Are... are you okay?"
"Y-yeah! Luckily."
Bro peers into the ajar bedroom door and sees...
Four. Dead. Bodies.
All four of his friends, in the same appearances of the last two times, sprawled on the floor, dead.
Bro gasps loudly and staggers back at seeing the bodies, putting a hand over his mouth and finding the nearest wall to fall against. What the fuck what the fuck what the fuck?!
The wardrobe doors rattle. Someone is inside. "You're not... the guy, are you?" says Chase's voice. "Y-you don't... sound the same... But... w-well I guess if this is a trick, I've already ruined it." He laughs darkly.
Bro’s so shaken he doesn't even know how to respond to Chase. He's honestly trying not to throw up.
"Hello?" The wardrobe door opens slightly. A sliver of Chase's face is visible, pale. "You... A-are you supposed to be here? I-I mean... I thought... you'd be part of the police I called... But you're not."
Bro's voice is shaky as he replies, "I... I'm a h-hero technically but I.. uh... n-no I ... don't think I'm supposed to be here." He swallows nervously, "What.. what happened?"
"I-I don't know... it's all a blur, really." Chase pushes the wardrobe door open the rest of the way, staring down at the bodies. "We were hanging out when I saw someone outside. So I called the police, but then the guy broke inside a-and started going crazy. We all ran upstairs and blocked ourselves in here, but... it wasn't enough. I-I was a coward and hid, even through all the noise." He shakes his head sadly.
"You've been... hiding this whole time?" Bro asks quietly. "..you haven't left that closet? Through... all of that?"
Chase nods. "I-I know... I probably should have done something." He shivers a little. "But I was... frozen."
"...you don't seem surprised to see them all... dead." Bro says with a suspicious tone in his voice.
"Of course not!" Chase stares at him, shocked. "I could fucking hear the gunshots! I-I peeked out for a bit, but th-they weren't moving, a-and none of them came to check on me, so I—" He shivers again, stronger this time. "I... I-I don't want to talk about it. I-I want to get out of here. I c-can't stand seeing them like... like this." His voice sounds choked up.
Bro quickly changes his tune and hurries over to him. "O-Okay okay... sorry let's just...g-get you outside- c'mon..." He gently tries to lead him out of the room.
"Th-thanks." Chase follows Bro quietly, avoiding looking at the bodies as they leave the room and start heading for the staircase. "I... like I said, I called the police. Th-they could be here soon. We should wait for them. H-how did you find this place? It's... out in the middle of nowhere."
Bro messes with his hair, "...excellent question I'm... still trying to figure that out myself. But uh... i... I can wait with you..."
"Thanks." Chase nodded. They reached the living room and he sat down on the sofa. "But... s-sorry, I think I'm just really confused. What do you mean? You... don't know how you got here?"
"Kinda? It's... complicated and confusing and... y-you're going through a lot so I... I don't wanna make it worse." Bro says, holding his arm and rubbing it.
"W-well... maybe it can distract me," Chase says, giving a small, weak smile.
Bro lets out a small snort of a laugh and shakes his head. "...I'm... you- from another universe. And usually to get into universes we use a device but.. it got broken so now... there's these weird rips? In the air? They only seem to affect me but... this is the 3rd time ive wound up in this cabin? But... each time is different and... I don't know why I keep coming back here... or why I'm here at all."
"...huh." Chase blinks. "O...kay. I think... I'm not really processing that. But... I mean... I've played video games where there are a lot of routes that are slightly different depending on your choices. Maybe... it's like that? Maybe... instead of appearing in a new game altogether, you're appearing in a different route in one game?"
".... that's the best way I can think of all this to be honest-" Bro says with a sigh, finally going to sit down on one the couches. "..I guess that makes sense. When I came here before... it... it wasn't like this. It wasn't this bad... i... I'm so sorry Chase..." He takes a shaky breath and shakes his head. "But, if this is just... going through routes then... maybe I can find one where... none of this happens. Maybe even one where I can find Jackie or Alt..."
"Jackie and Alt...? Friends of yours?" Chase asks. "I-I have a Jackie... well. I mean." He glances up towards the ceiling. "L-let's not talk about that."
"Yeah... my best mate and my brother... I.. I don't know where they are or what they're going through but... we all fell through the same rips. I..I hope they're okay..." Bro says sadly.
"Hmm. Yeah... maybe you'll find them." Chase nods. "Maybe."
Silence fell for a while. Awkward, sad silence.
Until... Chase inhales sharply, glancing towards the basement door. "What? Chase, you said a 'rip,' right? Like... that?" He points towards the door. Just in front of it, a small black rift is taking form.
Bro gets to his feet quickly and then his eyes widen as he sees the rip. "... y-yeah... yeah that's it."
Bro shakily swallows again and then tries to smile at Chase. "... guess that means it's time for me to go..."
Chase nods. "Good luck, then."
Bro smiles sadly at Chase and pats his shoulder. "Sorry I couldn't stay..."
Bro walks closer. The rift grows bigger—but before he can reach it, something happens that hadn't yet.
Someone else comes out of the rip in space-time. It's a man, with brown hair, wearing a black T-shirt. A green scarf is wound tightly around his neck, and a white eye-patch hides his right eye. His body shivers with static as he steps out of the rift and into the living room. He glances around for a moment, and then looks directly at Bro. "What the fuck has happened here, Chase?" Anti asks.
Bro staggers back as he takes in who is coming out and then stares at him with wide eyes and a slack jaw. "A...Anti!?" He pushes his hair back and then laughs breathlessly, "How...? W-What are you doing here?!"
"An...ti...?" Chase repeats, eyes wide—and then narrowed into a glare.
"What am I doing here?! I'm checking to see what the fuck is causing all these rifts to appear!" Anti gestures back at the rift behind him. "Reality is already fucking paper-thin here, there's a dozen of these in this universe's alternate versions—What the fuck?! Please tell me you didn't do anything. Please tell me you got sucked in and aren't causing this."
Bro staggers back and waves his hands, "W-We got stuck! We were- we got tricked by an Anti in the last universe! He messed with the TRVLR and was using it to bring us to him and h-he broke it! He said he's gonna destory other universes but we have no way to find him! I've been stuck in a loop here and I... I don't know where Jackie or Alt or e-even Mag is!"
"Huh. Well... fuck." Anti pauses, brows furrowing as he thinks. "I think I can help with finding your friends and that cat-themed fucker, at least. The rest... we'll have to talk about later." He jerks his head back to the rift. "Go on through. You'll be in pitch black, but you won't go through to another world. Not until I'm there.”
Bro looks relieved as he nods. "T-Thanks Anti... so glad we ran into you..." He starts to go towards the rift-
“And you." Anti glares at Chase. "Stay right where you are."
"Wh--" Chase's eyes widen. "I-I don't know who you think you are, b-but I've been through a lot, all my friends just--"
"Yeah. No. I'm not falling for that." Anti grins. "You think I can't recognize myself? Especially one as despicable as you?"
Chase takes a step backwards. His expression shifts for a moment, become something nasty and unpleasant.
Bro stops when Anti and Chase talk. His eyes widen as he looks at Chase. "Wait- what? You... you're-" He pales and backs away. "...you tricked me."
Chase--no. This world's Anti smiles a cruel smile, twisting Chase's features. "Oh, it's not your fault. I'm just too good at this, especially in something that fits as well as this."
Bro's eyes glow with anger and he bares his teeth and looks ready to fly at Chase and punch him. "You fucker! You killed all of them! You absolute fucking-!"
Anti grabs Bro from behind. "Don't." He scowls at the other Anti. "I get it. I want to fucking kill him. But apparently we're not supposed to divert the course of worlds too much."
"So sad." The other Anti gives a little wave, still smiling. Anti growls, a bit of green light escaping from beneath his eye-patch. Just like Bro, he looks about ready to attack this guy. But he holds himself back. "Besides, Chase. The sooner we leave, the sooner we find your friends. They're in alternate worlds like this—and in some of those alternate worlds, this guy is still a bit trigger-happy. We got to get to them fast."
Bro growls angrily at the other Anti but lets himself be grabbed by Anti. He doesn't take his eyes off him but nods towards the rift. "...Okay... okay yeah- l-let's go find them then." He shudders, thinking of getting to another timeline and seeing... Jackie and Alt in that horrible pile. He hurries towards the rift.
Anti makes sure that Bro leaves first before turning back to the other one, still in Chase's body.
"In most of these worlds, you don't win," he whispers.
The other Anti shrugs. "I've won here. That's enough."
"For now." Anti stares at him for a moment more... then turns and walks through the rift.
 -----------
Jackie lands in the living room again. It's night outside. The room is empty, but he can hear footsteps in the kitchen area.
Jackie catches himself as he falls and looks around expectantly. Then deflates when nothing looks different. He sighs heavily and pushes himself up, "Welp... so much for that..." He mutters. Then, he perks up and curiously goes towards the kitchen.
He walks into the kitchen area, which is connected to the dining room.
A man is opening up one of the dining room windows. A man wearing a red hoodie... that is absolutely soaked in blood. The man turns at the sound of Jackie's footsteps... and he sees his own face.
"Oh, fucking hell," the other him curses under his breath, then glares at him. "You. Don't fucking ruin this. Or I'll kill you." The man reaches for something leaning against the wall, picking it up. That's... that's an axe. Usually used for chopping wood, but the blood on its blade tells a different story.
Jackieboy staggers back with wide eyes and goes white. He stumbles, hardly able to say a word. He tumbles into the door of the kitchen and cowers away, feeling sick by the sight and the smell of all the blood. "i..I-i...!"
"Why do you look like this one?" the man with his face asks, more talking to himself than Jackie. "That's strange. He doesn't have any relatives in his memories." He chuckles, an amused grin on his face as Jackie stumbles backwards. He turns to face him. "Look. I've just had... a lot of difficulty. So I'm running low on patience. Tell me who you are and how you got here. Quickly. You don't want to annoy me."
"I-I'm Jackie! Jackie M-Mann...!" Jackieboy blurts out, "I.. I dunno how there was a r-rip in the air and it's b-black and it o-only sucks me in but i... I thought it was just a ghost- they s-said it was only a ghost-!" He's panicking. "P-Please don't kill me- I... I have a family b-back home..! I...I just need to find a way h-home I.. I didn't mean to come here...!"
The man stares at him with a blank expression. Then he suddenly laughs. "A ghost...? Well, I was a ghost. Up until about ten minutes ago. Now I'm alive again." He flexes his fingers, looking down at his hands with joy. Then he looks up again. "You have no idea how much I struggled getting here. Any one of them would've fit better, I'm sure of it. Live and let live, I suppose. But you don't care, do you? You're too scared to care." He jerks his head to the side. "Get out of my sight."
Jackieboy squeaks in response, looking white as a ghost. He quickly nods and runs as fast as he can towards the door. He doesn't know or care about what he means. He can't let himself die here...!
The door is locked.
Jackieboy chokes on a panicked sob and tries to turn the knob, banging against the door in a desperate attempt to get it open.
No good. It might as well have been a wall.
"Having difficulty back there?" the man's voice calls from the kitchen. "I said to get out of my sight."
"I...! I'm t-trying!" Jackieboy sobs, desperately throwing himself against the door. When thet doesn't work he hurries to try to find that clock that he used to break the window earlier...!
There it is! Right on the table where it was last time.
The man laughs. "Try harder~" he says in a singsong voice. A scraping sound comes from the kitchen. No doubt that axe, grinding against something.
Jackieboy looks towards the kitchen, feeling his blood replaced with ice as the murderer sings towards him. He chucks the clock at the window with all his might.
It hits the side of the window instead of the center where the glass would be weakest and bounces back.
Footsteps. They're coming closer but the man is still just out of sight.
Jackieboy panics and almost trips over himself and he runs towards the closest room he can find- it looks like some sort of bathroom. He quickly goes in and tries to see if he can lock the door, breathing heavily.
Yes, the door locks. There's a deadbolt that slides shut. He's safe.
Jackie quickly deadbolts the door and staggers back away from it, scared out of his mind.
The footsteps walk into the living room. "Hmmm," the man's voice says. "Not up the stairs. The basement door is open, he wouldn't be stupid enough to leave it like that, would he? So..."
Jackieboy hears the mad man walking around and commenting like its some sick game of hide and seek. He holds a hand over his mouth and crouches down, hyperventilating and crying and trying to control his shaking.
And then the footsteps approach the bathroom door. "Did you notice something in there? There's no window." He laughs. "Odd, isn't it? Most bathrooms have a window, but I just couldn't figure out how to make it work. So that's basically just a box in there."
Jackie freezes as he takes in his words and looks around. Oh... shit- did he just fuck up...? He chokes on a sob and curls up as small as possible.
"You don't have to be too scared," the man says. "I'm not coming in there. Yet. I have stuff to take care of. But you're not going to come out. The door opens outward, you know, it's very easy to block. So just sit tight, alright?" He laughs.
Jackie is shaking and quietly sobbing as he pulls out his phone. If this crazy psycho is gonna kill him... he has to say goodbye to Zara. He's not gonna let himself die without her knowing- she has to know. He hates that he might not see her face again but... he's alone. He has no idea where Bro or Alt is and... He tries to see if he can make the call-
"I'll be back later. We can catch up then. Maybe you'll come up with something to persuade me in the meantime. I've been known to go easy on people if they make it--what?" His voice turns away from the door, like something caught his attention. "The fuck is that?"
Then, Jackie snaps his head towards the door, curling up small.
"Who the fuck are you?!" The man shouts.
"I think the better question is, 'what are you?'" a voice says. "I'd ask you the same, but I already know who, and what, you are. A m̷̛oņ̷s̨̧t̀͟er̕."
"What the f--?!"
There's a thumping sound against the nearby wall. The man shrieks angrily, almost animalistic, and then, suddenly, the thumping and the shrieking stops.
Jackie clutches his phone tight to his chest and listens to everything happening with bated breath. He cries out and covers himself as the thumping and screaming starts. He stays curled up for as long as he can.
Someone knocks gently on the bathroom door. "You can come out," the voice says, not harshly, but not exactly gently, either. "I took care of him for now."
Jackie jumps as the knock happens and stares at the door with wide eyes. "...h...how do I k-know this isnt a t-trick so you can just k-kill me...?" he tries to bite out with anger but his fear damages the bite.
A moment passes in silence.
"I guess you don't," the voice says. "Personally, I don't think I sound anything like that guy--not while he's stuck in that body--but I guess you don't know his capabilities, maybe he can mimic voices."
A pause.
"I'll come in, then. Be prepared."
There's a sound of static, and a flurry of green and black pixels, and suddenly there's a man crouched on the ground in front of him. He's wearing a long-sleeved black shirt with the phases of the moon on it, and has a green scarf loosely wrapped around his neck. His right eye is covered by a white eye-patch.
"Well?" he asks. "Does it still seem like a trick? Because I'll leave if it does. You can come out when you want."
Jackie screams in Anti's face as he appears in front of him and tries to scramble up the wall.
"Okay okay!" Anti immediately disappears. His voice comes from the other side of the door. "Can never expect people's reactions, but I should've fucking realized... fucking... He's not gonna be out forever, so can you please process this quickly?"
Jackie breathes heavily and clutches over his heart, trying to take it all in. "I... I know you- You're the Anti from... t-the first universe we ever went to...!" He scrambles to his feet and goes to unlock the door, looking out with wide eyes. "H..How are you here?!"
"I'm... who?" Anti blinks, confused. "The first universe you... Did you meet some other version of me? Because I have no idea who you are. But, as for how I'm here... that fucking thing." He points behind him, where a black rift has opened up in front of one of the front windows. "Fucking rifts showing up. Not a good sign."
Jackie looks confused, "Uh... y-yeah...! We meet like... god... its been over a year now since?? How do you-" He shakes his head, "N-Nevermind! If you have a way to get me out of here p-please do!"
"Right." Anti nods. "Go through the rift. You'll be in pitch black for a moment before I join you. Afterwards, we're going to have to stop by other worlds to find three other people out of place like you."
"M-My friends! O-Okay good... okay... yeah. T-Thank you." Jackie says, putting his phone away and rubbing at his tear-stained face. He doesn't hesitate to run towards the rift- only sparing one last glance at the killer's body and Anti before jumping in.
Anti also glances at the unconscious figure. He gives this other Anti--in the body of this world's Jackie--a look of disgust before hopping through afterwards.
-----------
Magnificent lands in the living room yet again. It's night outside.
Magnificent snarls as he pushes himself up, wiping himself off. He looks at his surrounding with confused anger. "The fuck is going on??" He asks himself.
The room is empty, but a glowing red light comes from the open doorway to the basement.
Mag sees the red light and seems... fixated on it. Like a cat finding something it wants. He prowls forward towards the basement.
The red light comes from down the staircase, from the hallway in the basement. And with it... more of that dark power. It's stronger. And that faint, lighter current underneath is nowhere to be found.
Magnificent’s eyes shine with that power hungry light as he feels the power below. He teleports to get closer-
This is the same basement hallway from before, but now lit by a red glow coming from the middle door on the right. It slowly opens further and out walks the same Marvin from the last two times. But something is different. Maybe in the way he’s standing? He turns and starts to walk down the hall, but stops when he sees Magnificent standing there.
“Well… you’re definitely not supposed to be here,” he says.
Mag looks at him with a curious head tilt then giggles, “I would think so too… but I keep ending up back here. But something is different this time…” He prowls closer, eyes alight with hunger.
Marvin's eyes narrow. Red light dances around his hands. "Don't get closer," he growls. "This is your only chance."
Magnificent laughs, “And what could you possibly do to me?” He smirks cockily.
Marvin tilts his head. "Oh? You want to see? Fine, then."
Suddenly, he's behind Magnificent, throwing a blast of red magic at him.
Magnificent gasps and then yells out as the blast hits him. “Why you little-!” He snarls then turns around to try to blast purple black magic fire at him.
The blast hits Marvin dead-on and he stumbles back, patting out the fire on his outfit. "I don't want to sound like a child, but you did start it," he chuckles, setting up a translucent red shield in front of him.
Magnificent snorts and rolls his eyes.
Red light flickers through the hallway and a whip of red light lashes out at Mag's legs.
Mag easily teleports out of the whips of light and zigzags across the hall in quick flashes before charging at the shield with lightning to try to shatter it.
The shield breaks in two and Marvin stumbles back, scowling. His eyes flash red, and the lights in the hallway suddenly go out, plunging the basement into pure darkness.
Magnificent falters for a second, looking around in confusion. He tries to reach out where he thought he saw Marvin last.
But Marvin isn't there. Instead, Magnificent touches something else. It's soft and covered in cloth, with some warm liquid staining it.
Magnificent recoils back and shakes off his hand in disgust. He then does the smarter thing of lighting fire in his hand so he can see.
The light of the fire reflects off the glassy eyes of a dead body sitting in a chair. And there are three more, all slumped over. Somehow, Magnificent is no longer in a hallway, but in a small room, empty except for four bodies, all of whom he recognizes from the last two times he arrived in this cabin.
Magnificent can’t stop the involuntary gasp that escapes his mouth as he sees where he is and takes in all the bodies. He stumbles back- too surprised to stop himself. “What… what the hell?!”
Marvin laughs. It sounds muffled--coming from behind the room's closed door. "I'll assume you can usually teleport and ward the door," he says. "I wonder if you'll be able to magic your way out of talking with the police. Well... I'm not curious enough to stick around and see." His voice drifts away.
“What?!” Magnificent snarls, “you’re not pinning this mess on me, coward!” He tries to teleport out- maybe he was bluffing about the wards!
It feels like he just ran into a wall, his power bouncing back.
Magnificent staggers back and growls like a feral animal. He throws magic to try to destroy the door.
The magic cracks the wood, causing it to splinter and shudder--and after a moment, catch fire. It didn't happen right away, proving there must have been some magic in there, but eventually, it burns.
Magnificent grins and then tries to kick down the door to escape.
The door falls into burning firewood and Mag is able to run into the hallway.
Marvin has walked away, towards the basement staircase. He spins around at the sound of the doors breaking, eyes wide. Scowling, he turns back around and hurries up the stairs.
Magnificent bares his teeth and runs after Marvin, "Get back here!"
"Fuck you!" Marvin shouts, sending a bolt of red light over his shoulder.
Magnificent dodges the light and shoots his own to try to take out Marvin’s leg.
Marvin shrieks and falls when he's almost to the top of the staircase, hitting his head on the edge of one of the stairs. He's dazed for a moment, then, suddenly, laughs. "Oh yeah! That's what pain is!" He scrambles up the rest of the stairs on hands and knees, reaching the open doorway at the top.
Magnificent tilts his head in mild confusion before teleporting in front of Marvin and going to step on his hand. "You little bitch-" Magnificent spits. "You thought you could get away from me? Pin me for your gruesome murders? I think the fuck not!"
Marvin shrieks again as Magnificent steps on his hand, then looks up, grinning. "So you're gonna kill me?" he giggles. "Go on. I'll hop into you next." His other hand grabs onto Mag's ankle, sending a shock of red magic up his leg.
Magnificent jolts slightly from the magic but seems unphased. He grins wide and manic and laughs, "Oh no- I'm not gonna kill you! I'm just gonna take some of the power for myself~" He goes to snatch Marvin up by the wrist and attempts to drain him.
Marvin's eyes widen as he starts to feel his power drain--and then, before Magnificent can get too much, he feels the power yanked out of his hands. Marvin scowls--and suddenly he isn't on the floor any more, he's standing up behind Magnificent, trying to plunge a knife into his back.
Magnificent's eyes widen as he feels the snag and then before he can even react there's a sharp pain in his back that has him yelling out. He staggers and tries to catch himself on the wall next to the stairs- trying not to fall down them too.
Marvin pulls the knife free, flicking blood from the narrow blade, and goes in for a second stab.
Magnificent is so dazed with pain he doesn't expect the second stab- and the pain and pressure of it makes Mag lose his footing and fall down the stairs- his vision momentarily whiting out as he crashes back to the basement floor.
And in the basement hallway, a small black rip starts to form.
Marvin rushes down the stairs, clutching the knife tight, but skids to a hall when he sees the rift. "Huh? What the fuck?" He shakes his head, ignoring it, and goes for a third stab on Magnificent while he's down.
Magnificent is dazed but... surprisingly not down?? Guess its his suppressed feelings of pain from being mostly dark magic. His eyes open and see Marvin approaching him but he lunges back and skids back on the hall floor. He bares his teeth like a feral cat before ignoring all better judgement and lunging to try to claw at Marvin's throat.
Now, he only wants blood.
Marvin shrieks. Not expecting that, he falls back, Mag's claws digging into his neck--
And suddenly, a bolt of static and glitches shoots out of the rift, forming a person that drags Mag back from Marvin. "Can't leave you alone in any world, huh?!" Anti bites out.
Magnificent makes a choked noise of confusion and hisses, "You?! Why are you here?!!"
"Chase! You want to punch this fucker's lights out?!"
"Oh it'd be my fucking pleasure~!" Bro says with a big grin. He cracks his knuckles and then grabs Mag by the front of his shirt and punches him as hard as he can. "That's for working with the fucker who stranded us here, bitch!"
Mag's eyes roll up and he crashes to the ground, out cold.
Marvin scrambles to his feet as soon as possible, clutching his throat to stem the bleeding. He gives Bro and Anti confused looks, then turns and hurries up the stairs, heading for the cabin's first aid kit.
Anti glares after him. "I don't feel bad for that fucking thing inside him, but that Marvin... he didn't seem so bad." A pause. "Better than mine. Better than this fucker." He kicks Mag in the side.
"Yeah jesus... Mag went for his fucking throat god-!" Bro shakes his head.
"let's hope he lives. Maybe the shock of this will loosen that thing's hold." Anti says.
Bro looks sadly towards the stairs. "I hope he's okay too..." He sighs and grabs Mag and throws him over his shoulder, "Man I've done this a lot this adventure..."
Anti laughs. "Fucker doesn't give you any other choice, does he?" He shakes his head. "Alright. Two more to go. Back in the black space." He jerks his head towards the rift. "Hope you're not too tired of carrying him."
"Nah he weighs pretty much nothing." Bro shrugs. He hurries over to the rift.
"Good." Anti makes sure that Bro and Mag go through first before heading through himself.
-----------
Alt lands in the living room yet again. The outside is pitch black, and the floor under his feet seems strangely tilted. Something about this place seems slightly off in comparison to the last two times. Like the details haven't quite filled in...
And then, in a snap, that strange feeling is gone, and it's just the normal living room. Outside the sky is the pink-orange color of a sunrise.
Alt staggers as he lands in the living room, looking around the strangely tilting floor and feeling a sense of dread curl around his throat. Then, he blinks and its all gone. He grips at his wounded arm and looks around in confusion.
Footsteps come from behind one of the closed door. It jolts for a moment, locked, and then Jameson manages to open it and stumbles out, shirt stained with blood. His attention immediately goes to the windows. Relief floods his face when he sees the sun. Then he notices Alt. "Wh--" he starts to say, and then his words are suddenly overtaken by coughing.
Alt glitches back in surprise and staggers away from Jameson with a slight bit of fear. But that’s overtaken by concern as he sees him cough. “H-Hey… are you… okay?” He asks, warily noting all the blood on his shirt.
He stares at Alt for a moment, hesitant. Then nods. "Not... hurt," he says in a hoarse voice, then coughs some more. He asks in shaky sign language, Can you understand this?
Alt nods, "Y-Yeah I can speak sign... please don't overwork yourself..."
Jameson nods again, relieved. I don't know how you got here, but we need to leave. He stumbles forward, slowly heading for the front door. Terrible things have happened.
Alt looks confused, "T-Terrible how? How... did you get that blood on you if you're not hurt?" He glitches back and warily holds out a hand towards Jameson, magic faintly sparking. "How can I trust you...? W-When I was here last... y-you were-!"
Jameson blinks, confused.
I've never seen you before, he says slowly. It doesn't matter. Terrible things. He shudders. My friends are dead. He keeps going across the room, reaching the door and trying to open it.
It's stuck, seemingly locked.
Alt's eyes widen, "D-Dead...? A-All of them?? W-What about Marvin and Chase I..." He stops himself and shakes his head, holding a hand against his chest. "...each time I'm here... it's different. A different person possessed... different people hurt and no one remembers the time before... but... how? and...why?" He whispers.
Then he looks back to Jameson and glitches over, trying to see if he can help with the door. As he tries he asks, "I... I know it might be painful but... c-can you tell me how? How did... all this happen?"
Jameson's expression flickers into... something else. Is it annoyance? He looks away too quickly for Alt to really process as he digs into his pockets and pulls out a ring of keys, which he hands to Alt.
Alt blinks at Jameson and takes the keys, looking confused. "...you had the keys? ...huh..."
Yes, but they weren't useful while we were in outer space, were they? Jameson says.
"Oh.. right-" Alt says, blushing slightly.
Maybe the annoyance was a trick of his mind, because now Alt can only see sadness on Jameson’s face. I'm not sure. Suddenly, the cabin was surrounded by nothing. This creature came after us. It used our bodies, made us attack each other. He shivers. I... He trails off. It's over now, though. I think.
Alt gives Jameson a wary glance. "Nothing huh... that... happened last time too... when you were..." He hesitates, then goes to try to unlock the door.
It takes Alt a couple tries to figure out which of the keys fit the lock, but eventually, he finds the right one and unlocks the front door.
Jameson opens up the door, sheer relief on his face. "Freedom..." he whispers, and staggers out.
Alt is still wary of Jameson though, despite everything. He's not sure how much of anything he can trust right now. In fact... how can he be sure that the others are dead...? He looks back towards the cabin, unsure.
Jameson looks back at Alt. He tilts his head, puzzled. If you want to look around in there, be my guest, he says. I'm getting out of here. He looks around. Though... I guess I can't drive.
Alt startles out of his thoughts and looks back at Jameson. He slowly nods, "Uh... I'm sorry I... I can't either. Are we... far from a town?"
Very far. Jameson nods. The nearest town is F-O-L-A-S-U-L. It takes an hour and a half to drive. So it will take a while to walk. But I'd rather do that then stay here.
Alt nods, "H-Have you called anyone to try to come help...? I... I don't think I have enough magic to help... get that far."
Jameson hesitates. I could try to call the police... it wasn't working before. He reaches into his pocket and takes out a phone, tapping at its screen.
And Alt feels a tug behind him. A rift has already opened up.
Alt blinks and looks behind him then balks at the rift, "W-What?? Already? H-"
Jameson looks back at him--then notices the rift in surprise. "That's not supposed to be here..." he says in a hoarse voice. "What is it? Do you know?"
"I...I'm not so sure... A... tear in the universe I guess..." Alt says shakily, gripping at his bleeding arm. "I-It's been keeping me in a loop here- dropping me in this cabin but...seeing different things. I... I dunno how to stop it."
"Well... I don't, either," Jameson says. "Never seen that before. Though... somehow, it reminds me of that hole in the ground..." He shakes his head. The rift's pull is increasing steadily.
"H-Hole in the ground?" Alt asks, glancing back at Jameson. It's... strange- besides his Dr. J... he doesn't meet a lot of Jameson who actually talk...
"Looks like you're caught in that gravity," Jameson says. He gives Alt a smile and a wave. "So long. Nice meeting you for a moment."
That smile... it's strangely cruel, not fitting his face at all. Wait a moment--
But before Alt could do anything about it, the rift's pull becomes too much.
Alt's eyes widen and he shouts out, attempting to reach out to Jameson. Why? He's... not sure- because he was tricked?! Out of concern for who's trapped behind that smile? ...it doesn't matter, he's once again sucked into the darkness.
Alt lands in the living room yet, yet again. The sky outside is dark, and a man wearing glasses is sitting on the sofa. He jumps up, spinning around--more blood. More splatters and sprays of blood on his shirt.
"Wh-where did you come from?!" he stammers. "Are you--real? No, i-it shouldn't affect me! Should it?"
Alt shakes out his head and almost cries out in frustration at seeing the same room again. Then, he sighs and glitches out his shoulders and looks at Henrik with exhaustion. "I'm real. My name is Alt- I... keep getting put into the cabin and... I don't know why." He registers the blood and holds his own wound again. "...are you... hurt? Or... i-is that from something else?"
"S-Something else," Schneep says slowly. "I--I--" He laughs manically. "Oh, I-I was expecting to hear people coming! The police were called, they should be coming, with their sirens. You appearing out of nowhere--what bad luck for both of us."
Hold on... Schneep has always had a German accent, no matter the world they visited. He had one the last time Alt saw him in this cabin. But... now... He sounds slightly Irish.
Alt glitches back with wide eyes. He can immediately tell something is off by Schneep's laughter. The lack of an accent only adds to his fear.
"...y-you're not Schneep-"
“Depends on what you mean by that.” Schneep smiles a wide, cruel smile—the same smile Alt saw on Jameson’s face. “It’s his body. But he no longer lives here. Not primarily, at least. I’m sure he’s still watching.” He’s holding his hands behind his back in a very distinct manner. “But what’s it to you, sudden visitor? You’re not a friend of his. You would be in his memories.”
Alt stumbles back and holds out a hand that glitches and sparks with his magic. "I... I've helped him before- against you. But I... I guess that was a-another timeline... w-where are the others? They stopped you last time!"
Schneep--or the thing inside him--laughs again. "They were too late. Not strong enough." He takes his hands out from his back, revealing he is holding a sharp kitchen knife in one. "I got rid of the one with the blood, but this is the same sort of blade that ended them all."
"Y-You... you killed them?" Alt breathes out in horror.
Scheep spins the knife. "But it doesn't have to end you, too. Why not get out of here while I'm in a good mood? Quickly. I'm not a patient person."
Alt’s eyes spark green with anger as he bares his teeth, "You fucker! They didn't deserve that- none of them did! W-Why?! J-Just so you can pilot around a body that's not even yours without them getting in the way?!"
"Don't be ridiculous--it's more than that," Schneep's voice says dismissively. "I needed death. I needed the power of their lives to fully make this mine. Though... it didn't have to be him. In fact, it probably would've been easier if it was someone else." He grins. "But it worked out in the end."
"It's not even your life, fucker! You just took Schneep's away from him! And took all his friends!" Alt shouts back, glitches and magic sparking in the air around his- reacting to his anger.
He points the knife at Alt. "So... what will you do now?" he whispers.
Alt shudders a bit as the knife is pointed at him and he freezes for a second. But... he thinks about the brief glimpses he had of the others... thinking about their lives being tragically cut short and... the anger is overwhelming.
Green light sparks in his eyes as he growls at the thing in Schneep. "...I'm not letting you think you've won this. I'm gonna make sure you can't hurt anyone else-!" He then glitches in a bunch of fast moves to throw Schneep off before trying to send a bolt of electricity right to his face.
Schneep's eyes widen and he cries out, staggering backwards and falling over the coffee table as little bits of lightning dance among his hair. He quickly gets to his feet. "Wasn't expecting that," he giggles. "That hurt. Oh, I forgot what pain was. From this perspective." He flips the knife in his grip and throws it at Alt.
Alt glares at him and before he can retort he's stabbed in the leg by the knife hitting his upper calf. He cries out and falls slightly but catches himself. He rips the knife out, biting back a squeak of pain before he tosses it away. "...n-now you don't have a weapon- dumbass. But I do-!" He sends out a blast of soundwaves to throw him off his feet.
Schneep staggers backwards again, clapping his hands over his ears—and this time fully toppling over when he hits the table, legs flying in the air. It might have been funny under other circumstances, but not now, not as he growls menacingly and starts to get back up with murder in his eyes.
Alt meets his glare with bravery and determination bright in his eyes. He glitches his own knife made of magic in his hands and glitches around again before trying to slash at Schneep-
And Schneep screams as it slashes across his chest. He collapses to the floor once more. "N-no more, no more, please," he gasps. "I—I d-do not know who you are—I-I do not want to fight, please—"
His eyes... they're clear once more. And pained, as they look up at Alt.
Alt stands over Schneep with cold green glowing eyes. But, once he registers Schneep's pleas, his expression softens. "...Hen..?"
Schneep shivers, curling up and clutching the slash across his chest. "You--you must run," he breathes. "G-get out of here. I-I do not want to--" He shudders.
Alt glitches down to kneel down by Schneep and looks at him with sympathy, "C-C'mon Henrik! You can fight this! He was convinced you were gone- you still have a chance! Don't let this fucker take your body from you!"
"I-I—" He squeezes his eyes closed. "Please—h-help me."
Alt leans closer, "I can try... d-do you know of any way to beat it back? " He asks quietly, putting a hand on Schneep's shoulder.
"Y-yes... I know a way." Then he opens his eyes and grins. "Is that what you want to hear?"
His hand darts out and grabs Alt by the front of the shirt, pulling him forward—into the path of another knife that comes out of nowhere.
Alt's breath hitches in surprise- and he shouts out as he's stabbed in his shoulder but quickly pushes Schneep back and glitches away. He then staggers and leans up against a wall, biting back the pain. "M-Motherfucker-!"
The thing inside Schneep laughs, standing up again. "You're too late," he says. "This body is mine now. And soon, a body is all you'll be."
He lunges forward-- And then a black rift opens up beside him and a glitching green figure slams him to the side.
Alt scrambles back, curling up to try to protect himself- Then, he blinks up and his eyes widen as he sees another glitching figure. "W-Wha??"
Schneep shrieks in surprise, struggling. A glitchy hand reaches into the side of his head. His eyes suddenly widen and he collapses to the floor.
The glitchy figure solidifies into a man with an eye-patch and a loose green scarf. He looks at Alt--and then back to the rift, where someone else is stepping out. "This is one of your friends, then?" he asks, pointing at Alt.
Alt glitches to his feet with wide eyes, "A-Anti?! How... How did you...?" He then steps back and looks at Anti with confusion. "Wha... I... You don't... remember me?" He tries to hide the hurt that wants to peek through his words.
But then someone is stumbling out of the rift, face red and patchy and incredibly pale. He looks like he's been crying. But his tired eyes and red jacket are a dead giveaway of who it is.
Alt's eyes widen. "Jackie...?"
Jackie chokes on a sob and runs towards Alt and then grips onto him tight like he's a lifeline. "Alt! Oh my god... t-thank god I..." He dissolves into terrified tears and Alt quickly holds him, trying not to show his discomfort of Jackie aggravating his wounds.
"I-I'm happy to see you too Jackie..." Alt says quickly, rubbing his back. He then looks back at Anti and looks between the two. "I... H-How did you two find me? How... are you here? I... I thought you couldn't travel through dimensions..."
"How do you know that?" Anti mutters. "Eh, I can figure how you do. But you're right, normally I can't. That makes things different." He points to the rift. "They're opening up all over this world, and all the alternate ones like it. Probably cause reality is already so weak here. But... they do make travel easier. Normally they would spit you out somewhere random, but I'm not exactly normal." He grins. "Now. There are still two more of you guys out there. We need to find them."
His smile drops as he takes in the two of them and their states. "Not right away, if you two need time. But probably soon."
Alt looks back at the rift with knitted eyebrows. "... Right... the tears... I guess that makes sense..." He pats Jackie's back and pushes him back a little, "Hey dude... try to breathe, okay?"
Jackie nods shakily and rubs at his eyes. "Y-Yeah yeah I.. I'm cool-" He mumbles, his voice breaking a bit.
Alt smiles sadly- and that's when Jackie sees the fresh stab wound on Alt's shoulder- and his arm and his leg...! "H-Holy fuck dude! You're really hurt!"
Alt shakes his hands and gives a tight smile, "It's good! It's good! I've had worse! We should... focus on finding Bro and Mag now- before the tears get even worse..." He looks back at the body of Schneep and shivers, "...this was already a terrible t-timeline to see..."
"There are good ones," Anti mutters. "You've just got fucking terrible luck, I think."
Alt tries to smile at Anti but it falls short, "Y-Yeah... I know..."
Anti gestured back at the rift. "Now... if you're ready, step on through. You'll be somewhere pitch black for a moment before I go through, too."
Alt sighs and grabs Jackie's hand. "We can stick together now, okay?"
Jackie laughs wetly and nods, "Y-Yeah... thank god."
Alt chuckles and leads them both into the rift- sparing one last glance at the fallen body of Schneep and looking... conflicted. Then he turns the darkness and walks through.
Anti waits for them to go through before following.

The poll at the bottom to decide what happens next is only open for one day, expiring on April 20th at 12:00pm PST. Part Seven will be up the next day, April 21st, at the same time.

“Bro, it’s not gonna be that hard to tell us what you’re talking about,” Chase says.
Marvin raises an eyebrow. “It’s also not gonna be that hard to walk three meters from where you’re standing to the room.”
It’s farther than that, JJ says.
“Semantics.”
“Marvin, I think what we are trying to say is that... you have been acting a bit unusual,” Schneep says delicately. “We need some trust.”
“Yeah, maybe when we walk in you’ll lock us in the room or something,” Jackie adds.
“What the fuck? No!” Marvin folds his arms. “Okay, fine, if you guys are being so weird about it. The room is pretty much empty except for some chairs. But there’s a pattern burned into the floor that I know is a ritual circle for spells.”
Jackie blinks. “What?”
Marvin throws his hands in the air. “See? You have no idea what that means! My explanation is fucking useless to you!”
Even that is better than going in completely blind, JJ says. Thank you, Marvin. We’ll check it out now.
“Finally. You guys are being weird.”
“No, you’re being weird!” Chase insists. “You’ve been weird since we came down to see what you were doing!”
Marvin starts to snap back, but stops. He frowns, like he’s considering something. For a moment, he looks worried. Then he pushes past it. “Well... I’ll try to stop being weird, then. Come on. I’ll go in first, if you’re so worried about me locking you in.” And he turns around and walks back into the room he came from. The other four glance at each other, a bit concerned, but follow him.
The room is exactly as Marvin described, empty except for four wooden chairs. A single dim bulb lights it up, though there are still shadows around the edges. And on the floor—wooden boards instead of the blank concrete in the basement hallway—is a design. Chase traces the lines with his eyes. A circle. With lines crisscrossing back and forth, and six strange symbols burned into the empty space in the center. The four chairs sit on the edge of this circle, evenly spaced between each other.
“So... you said this was a ritual circle?” Schneep asked. “For what?”
“I don’t really know, actually,” Marvin says slowly. “I don’t recognize the pattern. And actually, patterns aren’t really used that much, it’s usually just the circle, maybe with some runes around the edges if you want to be fancy.”
“What about these?” Jackie points at the symbols in the center. “They seem important. Do you recognize them?”
“I... kind of?” Marvin says. “It’s weird. I don’t know how I know this, but it’s something about... life? And... change? Transformation, o-or maybe transference, I don’t know.”
“Why’s it burned into the ground?” Chase mutters, tapping one of the lines with the tip of his shoe. “Seems like a lot of effort.”
“I’m guessing whoever did it was planning on using it a lot.”
JJ frowns. Why is this in Jack’s cabin? Along with all those magic books in the other room? I didn’t think he was into that sort of stuff.
“Maybe it belonged to some other family member,” Jackie suggests.
Chase gives the room a second look, as if he could find something new. And, surprisingly, he does. “Hey, these chairs were in the other room,” Chase says. “With the table. Marvin, did you move them in here?”
Marvin stares at Chase for a moment. Then at the chairs. He blinks, confusion clouding his face. “I... don’t know. Maybe? I—ow!” Marvin flinches a bit, pressing a hand to the side of his head.
“Are you okay?” Schneep asks.
“Yeah, I just... my head... started... hurt...” Marvin’s words trail off. He slowly lowers his hand. And he steps further into the room, going right up to the symbols in the center, looking down as he stands on them.
“Marvin?” Jackie asks, concerned.
Marvin looks up. “I remember what one of these means,” he says in a slow, almost monotone voice. “It means ‘blood.’ And I found something else in this room.” He puts his hand behind his back and then takes it out again. A knife is clasped in his hand. A thin blade, almost a dagger.
“Whoa!” Jackie steps forward, holding his arms out protectively in front of the others. “Okay, uh, cool? Th-that makes sense, I guess. Now, uh, can you put it down?”
Marvin grins. “Does it make you nervous?”
“No!” Jackie protests.
“I-it does a little,” Schneep says quietly.
“Really? What are you afraid of? That I’ll hurt you? I’m hurt that you’d think that.” Marvin flips the knife in his hand. “I’ll show you how hurt I am.” Slowly, he raises the shaking knife to his throat.
Chase gasps. He pushes past Jackie. “Marvin, no!”
JJ also tries to push past him, but Schneep grabs him and pulls him back. “Be careful!” Schneep hisses.
“Be careful?! Be careful?! Are you seeing this?!” Chase takes a couple steps forward. “Marvin, put the knife down.”
Marvin just laughs. The blade presses against his neck.

Swap Across the CrystalVerse Chapter 23: Many Roads Diverge

Bro's fall is short, and he lands... in the same living room from before. Except... it looks slightly different. Outside the windows it is evening instead of dark night.
Bro oofs and catches himself on his hands before looking wildly around. "H...Hah??" He breathes, quickly turning around in a circle. "W-Why am I here again?"
And... voices come from the archway leading to the dining room.
"Really! I saw someone out there!" someone is shouting. "Someone has to be here, regardless of what just happened!" That... sounds like... Bro's voice. A... Chase?
The voices in the kitchen continue, lulling for a moment, allowing only one to be heard. "Yes, we saw an intruder... we're out in the Scanruil Forest..." It sounds like Jackie. On a phone call, maybe.
Bro shakes out his head and then starts to head towards the voices curiously. "Um... h-hello?"
The whole group is gathered in the dining hall--the exact same collection of people he'd just seen. Jackie is just hanging up a call when Bro walks in. Everyone jumps and turns to look at Bro in shock.
"Holy shit, okay, I guess Chase was right!" Marvin says, suddenly scrambling backwards.
"No, wait, that's a different guy!" Chase protests. "He, uh--" He looks Bro up and down. "Does he...?"
"Look like you a little...?" Schneep finishes.
JJ's eyes widen. You're not supposed to be here, he says to Bro.
Bro looks relieved to see everyone then looks weirded out as everyone acts like they don't know him. He holds up his hands, "W-What? Uh g-guys I was... I was just here! With you guys! W-We just saved Chase? Don't you remember??"
"Saved me?" Chase repeats. "F-from what?"
"F-From! The freaky thing possessing you!" Bro emphasizes.
"We just called the police," Jackie says, stepping out in front of everyone else. "So--if you're planning on doing anything suspicious, you better not."
"Guys, i-it's definitely a different guy," Chase repeats. "His clothes are different. The guy I saw was wearing dark clothes. I don't know what he's doing here, but--I don't think it's... bad?"
Bro throws his hands up, "c’mon! This literally just happened! We were downstairs in the basement and- and Marvin and JJ got a book and Marvin read a spell and this black smoke came out of Chase! Cuz he tried to shoot me!" He then freezes for a second and fumbles into his back pocket- where he stored Chase's gun. "I-I even took Chase's gun away from him!"
The guys all stare at him, more and more confused the more he speaks. And then Bro takes out Chase's gun and they all immediately react.
"Holy shit, where'd you get that?!" Jackie shouts, shoving Schneep--the closest person to him--behind him. Chase, JJ, and Marvin all scramble backwards.
"Th-that's not mine!" Chase protests. "I-I wouldn't bring that here! Right, guys?!" He looks around at the others nervously. "A-and I'd never try to shoot anyone!"
"What are you talking about, possession?" Schneep demands. "No such thing exists!"
Bro balks and then quickly puts it back away and holds up his hands. "R-Right right sorry! I um... i-" He laughs nervously and pushes back his hair, "I.. I feel like I'm g-going crazy I... I swear I was just h-here... How.. How can I prove that?"
"I-I-I think we would have remembered you, dude," Jackie says. "And that shit you just described!"
"We haven't been at the cabin for that long," Marvin says. "Just a few hours. The sun hasn't even set."
Though... that's weird. Wasn't it... night time here? Why is it evening outside?
Maybe you're thinking of something else? JJ asks. Maybe we remind you of another group of people?
"How did you get here again...?" Chase mutters. "We're all the way out here... you'd need a car..."
Bro shakes his head, gripping at his hair and holding his stomach. "I... I- Maybe? I dunno I just... I got pulled into another rip- l-like the one that brought me here before..." It slowly dawns on him as his eyes widen, "Did I... get sent to the past...?"
Schneep scoffs. "Oh, now we are talking about time travel?"
"Look, something is clearly going on," Jackie says, looking at Bro sympathetically. "Um... do you want to sit down?"
"Yeah, and tell me more about me being póssess̢ed?" Chase asks.
Bro nods, "u-uh yeah... s-sure... I..." He staggers over to one of the chairs in the kitchen and sits down. Then, he looks up at Chase and talks rapidly with his hands, "I mean-! It was weird the others were looking for you cuz they said you ran down here. Said somethin' about you seeing someone outside. And you apparently tried to strangle marvin but i didn't see that... so I broke down the door to help them find you but we couldn't find you in the basement cuz all the doors were locked! Then, you came out of one of the locked ones and tried to shoot me but you... you had this glazed look in your eyes and... I recognize that look cuz... my brother goes through something similar a lot. And then you got all creepy and had a different accent like something more irish? You told me I wasn't supposed to be here which... I know but kinda can't help that right now... Then i told you something and you seemed to snap out of it for a second! I think you were looking for someone named Sam...? T-Then you started freaking out about someone being here again and- and then that weird rip showed up and whatever was in you wanted it to take me cuz it said it worked too hard. And you started attacking us! And marvin read the spellbook downstairs and you started convulsing and I think i held you down when i wasn't supposed to so you woke up saying everything hurt but... you were back to normal. T-Then I got pulled into the rip and ended up back here!"
Utter. Silence.
The group all stares at Bro, confused and alarmed. Then Chase laughs. "I... th-that's ridiculous," he says. "Looking for... for Sam? That's, uh, my daughter. Sh-she's with her mom right now, she lives there during the weekdays, sh-she couldn't come all the way out here. And... a-and this... possession stuff... I-I wouldn't strangle Marvin! I mean, unless he said something really stupid--"
"Weird joke," Marvin mutters, rubbing his neck self-consciously.
"B-besides, as I said, possession is not real!" Schneep stammers.
"Well." Marvin tilts his head, considering. "There are spirits out there that can influence people. If you study witchcraft like me, you'd know that."
Besides, that's an awfully specific story, JJ says. Either he was thinking about this for a while, or he's telling the truth.
Chase shakes his head. "I-I wouldn't hurt you guys. You know that! You know that! I-it must--must be because of that intruder out there!" Desperation enters his voice. "He must--must be involved in this somehow!"
“What?!” Bro spits, “Why would I be involved with some intruder?! I just saved your ass! I know what I saw! And I don’t lie! Why would I lie about any of this anyways?? What would have I have to gain??”
“I don’t know! But there’s no way this is real!” Chase shouts. “There’s no way there’s no way there’s no way—”
“Chase, please, calm down!” Schneep walks over and grips Chase’s shoulders. “I’m sure there is a reasonable explanation for all this.”
I don’t think this man is lying, JJ says.
Chase shakes his head. His eyes look a bit glazed…
Bro gets up and walks towards Chase, “d-didn’t you say you thought you saw an intruder outside? Did anyone else see it or was it just you, Chase?”
“Just me…” Chase whispers. “Why?”
“…that’s the same as it was before,” Bro says gravely. “You were the only one seeing someone… someone you wanted to leave you alone.”
Chase laughs. “W-well! What does that prove?!”
“You know, we thought he was fucking with us until just now,” Jackie muses. “Thought it was a prank. But he’s insistent.”
“That’s right! I know what I saw!” Chase shouts. His eyes lock onto Bro. “It must have been you,” he snarls. And suddenly he pushes past Schneep and lunges at Bro.
Bro's eyes widen and he dodges out of the way and circles back around to look at Chase and hold up his hands, "Y-Yo dude chill out! I'm not the intruder! I-I've never seen outside the cabin, I swear!"
Chase skids against the floor and laughs manically. He spins around. "It has to be you! It has to be you!" he shouts, lunging again.
"Whoa, hey!" Jackie grabs Chase from behind. "Calm down!"
"No!" Chase thrashes in his grip. "I won't! I won't!" He laughs again. It sounds so unlike him...
And in the entrance to the dining room, a small black rift starts opening.
Bro backs up with wide eyes, "S-Shit! I think its happening again!" He looks over and then finds Marvin. "Go look downstairs! There's somewhere with a lot of books- there's a book there that has a spell that can help Chase!" He nervously glances at the entrance and pales as he sees the rift. But... it won't hurt these guys... maybe he can help them again.
"U-um--okay???" Marvin runs out of the dining room, leaving through the kitchen.
"Nothing's happening! Nothing's happening! Nothing's happening!" Chase screams. He wrests an arm free and punches Jackie in the face, shocking him into letting him go. He lunges for Bro again, growling like an animal.
He pushes him aside--and grabs the gun Bro had brought.
Bro cries out and hits the floor as he's pushed. Then, he whips around and yells out in fear, "W-Watch out!" He then tries to tackle Chase by the legs to throw him off.
Chase goes down, the gun falling from his hand. He shrieks wordlessly and kicks Bro back.
Schneep quickly grabs the weapon, looking nervous as he holds it.
The rift's pull grows stronger.
Bro gets hit in the face and lets Chase go. He gasps as he feels the rift pulling him. "H-Hen! Run! Get away!"
Schneep nods. He grabs JJ, standing beside him in shock, and bolts out through the kitchen.
Jackie follows close behind. Chase scrambles to his feet, sparing a glance at Bro... and a cruel smile that looks so wrong on his face. "Looks like I'll have to improvise," he? whispers, and runs after the three of them.
And then the pull of the rift becomes too much.
"What?! No-!" Bro shouts as he tries to go after them, but the rift draws him back and he plunged back into darkness.
----------
Jackie's fall is short, and he lands... in the same living room from before. Except... it looks slightly different. Outside the window is a lighter landscape, evening instead of night, and the furniture is back where it was before it all started to move.
Jackie looks around in confusion. "What...?" He breathes.
"Whoa!" There are two guys in the living room here. One is wearing a black outfit, and one has glasses.
The one in black points his phone at Jackie. "Schneep, I think I see it!"
The one in glasses turns around, and rolls his eyes. "That is Jackie, you idiot. Very funny, Jackie. You scared us a little."
Jackieboy startles and looks towards Schneep and the man in black. But, he knows that face- that's Marvin. But that... that can't be- Chase just said they were...! "W-What the fuck? How.. how are you- t-they said you two were dead-!" Jackieboy shouts in panic.
"Um... what?" Marvin gives a little, confused laugh. "N...no? We're not?" He gestures at himself. "Clearly? When did you put face paint on? And steal Schneep's shirt?"
"I don't own a shirt like that," Schneep mutters. "You have one that's kinda like it, though. Didn't Jackie get it for you?"
"He did, but not that one, and I did not bring it."
Jackie blinks almost comically and looks down at his shirt. He laughs nervously and pushes back his hair. "O-Oh yeah... t..the shirt-"
Schneep squints at Jackieboy. "Wait a moment... Are you..."
"How'd you get upstairs without us hearing?" Marvin asks. "Not cool to leave Chase and JJ, by the way. Especially since this ghost hunt was your idea."
"Don't pretend like you weren't super interested," Schneep says absentmindedly. This casual banter... it's so different from the environment before.
Jackieboy feels like he's gonna throw up. Last thing he saw was his own face looking at him with panic and all that freaky ghost shit. Was it a ghost actually? Jackie is shaking quite a lot as he steps back and tries to find a place to rest against. "I... I d-don't know what's happening I... I was just here- I... I think? But... C-Chase and JJ were covered in blood and - and said you were dead and that the other me killed you and-!"
"Um... maybe you should sit down, Jackie," Schneep says gently. "Clearly this stress is all getting to you."
"I'm sure Chase and JJ are fine," Marvin says. "I can go check on them, if you like. Oh, or I can text them."
"T-They weren't hurt- t-they said it was yours-!" Jackie squeaks and shakily finds the sofa to sit on. He anxiously looks towards the basement door and swallows. "i...I dunno- they s-said other me was... was acting weird and- that the ghost might be using him? I... i-i dunno-" Ohh he's freaking out- why is he freaking out? Nothing bad is happening- but he can't get the image of Chase and JJ covered in blood out of his mind.
"It's okay, Jackie," Schneep says gently. "Nothing is going on right now. This is a safe place, you are safe right now. Take deep breaths."
Jackieboy tries to follows Schneep's advice as he hugs his arms and tries to breathe.
"I'm gonna call Chase," Marvin says, dialing a number on his phone.
"Ooo, calling instead of texting, must be important," Schneep mutters.
"Yeah, yeah," Marvin mutters, making the call. "Hey, Chase. Jackie's up here, he's freaking out a little. Huh? N... no, he's up here." Marvin glances at Jackieboy nervously. "I'm fucking serious, I'm looking right at him. Put him on the line, then."
A pause.
Marvin goes a bit pale. "What... the fuck...? Y-yeah, come on up here." Marvin slowly lowers the phone, staring at Jackieboy. "Who... are you?" he whispers. "Y-you're not Jackie..."
Jackieboy flinches at Marvin's whispering and looks up to him with a scared expression. "..I'm a Jackie... just not yours. I'm... I'm from another universe... I-I'm sorry I d-didn't mean to make you think I was him I just... I-I can't process all of this-! I was j-just here! And you two were dead and they said Jackie killed you and they ran out the door and they were covered in so much blood! T-The house fucking attacked us and- and and...!" He grips his arms harder, finding it hard to breathe again as he takes shallow, panicked breaths, shaking like a leaf.
Schneep blinks. "I... Th-that is..." He shakes his head. "Okay. Ah... please just remember to breathe... Jackie." He seems unsure calling him that, but does it anyway. "We are not dead. A-and even if we were, our Jackie would not kill us.”
"i-i'm sorry I'm sorry i... I just want go home! I want to find my f-friends! I don't know w-where they are...!"
Marvin stares at him, confused. "There's... no one else in this cabin besides the five of us... and you. And maybe a ghost. I'm sorry. Y-your friends probably aren't here."
Jackie tries his best to breathe, frightened tears pricking in his eyes. "I-I wanna go home... I wanna go home-!" He whispers, rocking himself slightly.
The basement door opens, and out walk Chase, JJ, and Jackie. They all stop in shock.
"Whoa..." Jackie breathes. "H-he really does look like me."
Jackieboy startles as the others come out of the basement and looks wide eyed at them. He quickly wipes at his face and tries to wave, "U-uh... h-hi..."
"H-hi." Chase gives a little wave back. "Uh... are you... okay... other Jackie?"
He's clearly not, JJ says. I don't think he's supposed to be here.
"Well, yeah, it was supposed to be a vacation for just the five of us," Marvin says. "And Jack, before he got sick."
"W-well, if you want to go home, is there anything we can do to help?" Schneep asks. "Sorry, Jackie--ah, our Jackie. The ghost hunt will have to wait."
Jackie shrugs. "That's fine." The lights flicker. He looks up at them, annoyed.
Jackieboy shakes his head with a laugh, pulling at his hair. "I... I dunno! Our... our device we use to get to other worlds g-got broken and i t-think that's how i ended up here... t-twice I guess? But... b-before all the bad stuff h-happens?" He flinches as the lights flickers and looks around at the furniture like it might lash out to attack them.
"Uh..." Chase glances around at everyone else. "Other worlds?"
Schneep gives him a glare "This is not the time to talk about it," he hisses.
"Oh. Oh! O-of course." Chase nods. "Sorry."
Schneep looks back at Jackieboy. "Well, nothing bad is going to happen, I promise you. The most that happened was a bookcase falling on Marvin."
Marvin scowls. "Fucking sucked."
"Everything is going to be fine," Schneep continues reassuringly. "I'm... not sure what we can do to help, but we will do everything we can."
"Yeah, of course," Jackie agrees. "Uh... should we tell you a little about ourselves? I'm Jackie, this is Chase, JJ, Marvin, and Schneep. This cabin belongs to our friend Jack. We were all gonna come here for a few days for a vacation, but Jack got sick so he isn't here."
Jackieboy slowly starts to breathe easier and relax. He looks to the others and smiles. “Um.., n-nice to meet you… again. I’m also Jackie… Jackie Mann. I’m sorry I uh… i-intruded on your vacation…”
“No no no, it’s fine, really,” Chase insists. “I’m… not really sure what’s going on, but clearly it wasn’t you intention to intrude.”
“Hey, my last name is Mann, too!” Jackie says cheerfully. “Maybe you really are me from another world.”
The lights flicker again. Schneep sighs. “We really must tell Jack about the power issues in his cabin.”
“That’s the ghost, isn’t it?” Marvin says.
JJ keeps his attention on Jackieboy. Is there anything we can do to help?
Jackieboy flinches at the lights and then laughs nervously, “I… I dunno. Usually I have to try to find my friends but- they show up around our other selves but you’re all here and they’re not and- I.., I dunno what to do… our way home is busted and I’m going back in time I think??” He laughs almost manically as he grips at his hair. “I’m sorry I… I don’t know!”
“Deep breaths, man,” Jackie says, looking concerned. “I know this is probably really fucking stressful to you, but you can’t do anything while you’re panicking. In and out, okay? Like this.” He breathes in deeply and lets it out slowly.
Whatever has happened, I’m sure it’s not impossible to fix, JJ says. Or to at least recover from.
“That last bit was a little too grim, Jays,” Chase mutters.
Jackieboy struggles to follow his other self’s advice and slowly takes more calming breaths. “I-I’m sorry my friends they.. they know how to handle this so much better than me… I-I’m just a dorky dad who pretends he can do cool a-and then when faced with all this shit I’m… I’m lost.”
“I think you’re doing great,” Schneep says encouragingly. “Anyone would be lost in that situation. It is okay to feel overwhelmed. You are doing great for what your situation is.”
“And Ah… well… i-if you are going through other worlds… perhaps you are not back in time, just… somewhere else that is… earlier?” Schneep says, offering a tentative explanation. “A-and maybe if you keep going, you will run into your friends. For now, everything is okay, okay? Everything is fine. I-if you are worried about some sort of danger, perhaps we can prevent it.”
Jackieboy listens to Schneep explanation and nods slowly. “Yeah m-maybe… I…I was here once before in the cabin.. maybe…”
“Yeah… like maybe we can take care of the ghost,” Chase says. “Yknow Marvin, there were a lot of books downstairs that looked like your witchcraft stuff. Maybe there’s something about ghosts in there.” Chase smiles at Jackieboy. “See? We’re handling that part, at least.”
Jackieboy smiles tightly at Chase, “y-Yeah I think that’s a good idea… t-that ghost was acting all crazy when I was h-here earlier.”
“We’ll go check that out, then,” Marvin says, looking excited at the prospect of witchcraft books.
“Yeah, it’ll work out!” Jackie says. “I feel no urge to hurt anyone, but I’ll tell you guys if I do.”
The others laugh a bit, not really sure how to react.
Jackieboy laughs nervously at this and nods, "Y-Yeah Jackie maybe you should stay up here? Just in case..."
And, over near the kitchen entrance, a small black rip opens up.
Jackieboy startles and jumps as the rip starts to open, "What? A-Again?"
The others all look as Jackieboy yells.
“What?” Chase whispers.
“The fuck is that?” Marvin mutters.
“Maybe we shouldn’t get too close,” Schneep says, standing up and taking a step backwards.
JJ’s eyes are locked onto the rift as it gets bigger. His expression is hard to read…
"I- I don't think it'll hurt you guys..." Jackieboy says as he pushes himself up and starts walking towards it, "I... think it's for me." He laughs, "Only sucked me in last time..."
"You cannot get close to that!" Schneep protests, reaching out to grab Jackieboy's arm--but he's stopped before he can reach him. "Jamie? What are you doing?"
I think we should trust him on this, JJ says. I think he knows what he's doing.
"Wait... you mean he's actually from another world?" Marvin blurts out.
"That would explain why he looks so much like me," Jackie mutters.
Jackieboy laughs, "You just thought I was insane this whole time, huh?" He shakes his head. "It's okay- it still feels insane but... Yeah. I'm from somewhere completely different..." He approaches the rift and feels the breeze pulling at him. "... I dunno how magic bullshit works but... maybe things will be different if I go in on my terms." He looks at the others and smiles. "...Thanks for helping me you guys... I hope you get that ghost thing figured out."
"Uh... y-yeah," Chase stammers. "We'll... take care of it."
JJ nods. Good luck, he signs.
The closer Jackie gets, the stronger the pull becomes.
Jackieboy tries to smile at them and then reaches for the rip to pull him in, inviting the darkness.
-----------
Magnificent's fall is short, and he lands... in the same living room from before. Except... it looks slightly different. There's no sign of the people from before, no bodies on the ground. The windows outside show a dark, nighttime forest.
Magnificent catches himself and groans slightly, trying to breathe. He looks at his veins and grins a bit as he feels new power stirring within. He can work with this... Now- where is he? He blinks around the room and looks confused, "What on earth...?"
Strange... that energy he felt earlier is here, too. It's... stronger, slightly. And that same dark power he felt from the other Marvin is coming from the basement.
Magnificent hums in thought as he feels the energy and follows its pull- teleporting down to the basement.
He finds himself in a long hallway, with two doors on the left and three doors on the right, leading to a big open room. Camped near the middle door are four people--the same people from before. Chase, JJ, Jackie, and Schneep. They have a red bag with them, full of medical supplies, and they're treating their wounds, but... it's not the same wounds that Mag inflicted.
Chase notices him first. He gasps. "Guys?!"
The others look up and all scramble, getting into defensive positions.
Magnificent prowls closer curiously and then giggles as they all get up and try to defend themselves. "Well well- what do we have here!?" He grins.
Jackie shoves the others behind him. "I don't know how you got out without us noticing, Marvin, but--"
"What?" A voice comes from the other side of the middle door. "What are you talking about? What's happening?"
Schneep goes pale. "Marvin is still in there?" he breathes. "Then... wh-who is this?"
"Bad news, that much is clear," Chase says. He's holding a book with a cracked leather cover, which he opens up and starts hurriedly flipping through.
Magnificent laughs loudly, "You think some little book can stop me? I mean... I'm not sure what to do with you all yet... Almost exactly as you were before yet... It seems I've skipped a few chapters ahead hm?" He giggles.
“Wh-what the fuck…?” Jackie whispers.
“Who the hell are you?!” Schneep demands.
He’s not supposed to be here… JJ says.
“Guys? Wh-what’s happening?” Marvin says from the other side of the door. “What’s that voice?”
"Why I'm you Marvin~" Magnificent sings with a sick grin. "Except well... better in every possible way~!" He then pauses, tilting his head at the ragtag group in front of his curiously. "Though... I'm perplexed- why are you all down here? I mean- last I remember... I was listening to all your delicious screams for mercy~" He grins sinisterly.
Marvin makes a choking noise. “G-god… you sound just like th-this thing in my head…”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about you delusional fuck.” Jackie is pushing the others farther down the hallway. “W-we’ve never seen you before! We would remember you!”
We need to run, Chase signs to the others.
All the other doors are locked! JJ says.
"Oh? It's still there? Heh... wonderful... I can get some more power from it then..." Magnificent giggles, lightly his hands up with magic fire. "But... seems I have some pests in my way!" He chucks fire at them.
The group scatters. Jackie, out in front, takes the brunt of the fire, screaming and falling back.
Chase is distracted with reading the book and doesn’t react fast enough. He falls as well, shouting “No!” as the book he’s holding catches fire.
Schneep and JJ get away unscathed but Schneep doubles back to pay out the flames.
“Get out of here!” Marvin screams, slamming his fists against the door. “Run! Run!”
JJ grabs Chase and starts pulling him down the hall. Schneep grabs Jackie and does the same.
Magnificent laughs madly and prowls closer to the group, grinning ear to ear. “Aw come now gentleman~! Why don’t we have some fun?” He giggles and then he throws out a hand made of magic that has claws at the end- trying to slash at them.
Jackie, lagging at the back of the pack, almost gets slashed but barely manages to dodge it. The group runs into the room at the end of the hallway--a dead end.
"Kite, kite!" Chase shouts. Schneep and JJ look at him with confusion but Jackie nods.
Magnificent laughs and keeps following after them, “There’s no where to run~!”
As soon as Magnificent is far enough into the room, Chase and Jackie try to dart around him, dragging JJ and Schneep with them.
Magnificent whips around in surprise and shouts out, "Hey! What??" He tries to turn around and shoot spells at them but-
"Get kited, bitch!" Chase shouts over his shoulder as the group sprints for the staircase.
Then, right as they pass by the middle door, it bursts open and out stumbles Marvin--seemingly the same one Magnificent had run into earlier. He turns to look at Magnificent. His eyes are fully black. He scowls and tries to rush after the group of four. "Get back here!" he shouts.
Magnificent growls in anger and hurries after them- only pausing for a second to look at Marvin as he bursts out. Then, he joins him in his chase-
The group rushes up the stairs, and Schneep slams the door at the top shut.
Marvin immediately blasts it open with a burst of red light.
"Impressive power!" Magnificent giggles, delighted to finally see the spirit in action.
The four run for the front door--and pass right by a black rip in the middle of the living room.
Marvin skids to a halt. "What?" he--or the thing inside him--hisses. "What the fuck is that?!"
Mag skids too as he sees the black rip- probably getting closer than he would like. "The rift-! Again??"
"You've seen it before?" The creature glances at him--and then immediately gets distracted as Chase pushes the front door open. "Hey!" He teleports a short distance, continuing to chase the group.
"Yes I-" Mag stops himself as the creature seems to teleport away from it. He frowns and then shakes out his head and slowly looks down at the rift. He wonders if there's anything he can learn from it...
It's strange... he didn't notice it before but... there's a slight hint of power coming from the rift. It's not coming from the rip itself, but from the blackness within. Many different signatures, all weak and distant.
Ah, now he understands. It's not that the rift has power, but he is sensing power from other worlds, echoing back to the rift like distant voices at the other end of a concrete tunnel, constantly shifting and changing, a new collection of magics every second.
Magnificent's eyes widen and fill with that mad hunger of his, eyes drawn to the darkness within. Is this something he can harnass to use on his own? A power he can possess?
The rift goes bigger. And he's already standing so close; its pull becomes almost impossible to resist.
Magnificent shouts out in surprise and tries to dig in his heels. No! He will not be bested by this! He will harness it for his own!
... how though is the question?
He can't fight it- he eventually gets pulled back in.
-----------
Alt's fall is short, and he lands... in the same living room from before. Except... it looks slightly different. The windows show pitch blackness outside, and the door to the basement is open, pitch black beyond.
Beep. Beep. Beep.
WARNING
Current Location: 48.32846, -2.37265 in universe UA-1001023RD-5-7 is currently undergoing unusual space-time phenomena. Caution is advised. Please jump at the first sign of danger.
What a weird warning from the TRVLR. ...wait a second. He doesn't have the TRVLR. The TRVLR got smashed. Not even the pieces ended up with him. Why did he think it was in his hand? Why did he think he was looking at its screen?
Alt shakes out his head and rubs at it, holding up his hand to look at the beeping but... wait- why... did he think he still had the TRVLR...? He grips at his head, confused.
What was happening...?
The room is silent. Except... for the faintest sound of movement from behind the other closed door, the one next to the open basement doorway.
Alt shudders and glitches a bit to get some of that weird feeling off- then freezes as he hears movement. ...was that door there before...? He can't remember. He narrows his eyes and then glitches to get closer.
Nothing happens. On the other side of the door is sound of rustling, like cloth against a smooth surface.
Alt hesitates then tries to see if he can open the door.
The door opens easily--
"Stay back! I swear to god!"
Inside is a small bathroom, barely big enough for a shower, a toilet, and a counter with a sink. Marvin is pressed up against the glass door of the shower, holding a kitchen knife out protectively. Chase is slumped against him, missing his shirt, torso wrapped in bandages that must've come from a red bag on the ground.
"I don't want to do this, but i-if you're going to--!" Marvin blinks, lowering the knife slightly. "W-wait. Who the fuck are you?"
Alt glitches back in fright and then holds up his hands, "I-I'm sorry I-!" His eyes widen as he takes in the scene, "M-Marvin? What.. what happened? How.. how did Chase get t-that hurt? Where's Schneep??"
Marvin laughs, a crazed edge to it. "Where's Schneep?! He's been gone for a while! Th-then Jackie--I-I think Chase might've been gone if I left but I couldn't leave him, I-I had to fix him. H-how do you know me? I don't know you. How do you know me?!"
Alt backs up and holds up his hands, "I... I was just here! I... You just got a book to help Schneep c-cuz he was possessed and I had just healed Jackie and..." His eyes widen again and he glitches a bit closer. "L-Lemme see him! I can heal him!"
Marvin laughs again. "I-it wasn't Schneep who was--Y-you can really help him?" He looks up at Alt hopefully. "P-please... i-if you can try..."
Alt nods quickly glitches to be closer to Chase and look him over, "...what happened?"
"S-stab wounds,," Marvin says. "I-I was... was right there when it happened, i-in front of me... When Jameson... or whatever that thing is... when he was..." He swallows a lump in his throat. "I wasn't... probably didn't do a good job treating them."
Alt stiffens a bit and looks up at Marvin in confusion. "J...Jameson did this?" He furrows his eyebrows in confusion and then shakes out his head, focusing. He starts up his healing spell again, closing his eyes and mumbling words in Gaelic as his hands and the air around Chase's wounds start to glow blue. He presses his hands on the bandages and pushes his magic in, trying to see how much he can heal and how bad the damage is.
The wounds are bad, alright. And yet, somehow, it feels like they weren't getting worse.
The blue magic pushes in, healing him just a bit. The wounds don't disappear entirely, but Chase groans and opens his eyes again.
Marvin slumps in relief. "Thank you," he whispers. "Thank you thank you thank you." He hugs Chase gently with tears in his eyes.
Alt sways back and leans back against the wall as he blinks away some dizziness. He smiles at them and nods, "N-No problem... glad I could help..."
Then Marvin looks back up at Alt. "I-it wasn't JJ. He wouldn't do this, it's... s-something else... inside him."
Alt sits back up and narrows his eyes, quickly nodding. "Okay... then... he's being possessed now instead of Schneep... w-where are the others exactly?" He asks. Then, he starts to realize ...they don't know him even if he's been to this universe before... just not this... timeline? "O-Oh and I'm Alt by the way. S-Sorry should have said eariler..."
"Alt. N-nice to meet you." Marvin gives him a small smile. "I-I guess we've met before... somewhere else?
Alt tries to return his smile "You could say that..."
“I'm not gonna question it right now. But as for the others... Schneep, a-and Jackie..." His expression darkens, and he shakes his head. "They're... gone."
Grief flickers across Chase's face. He tries to stand up, but then falls back down.
Alt’s expression soon falls at the news. "Gone...? Gone as in-" He sees Chase's expression and feels dread thick in his chest but he panics to try to help Chase up. "C-Careful! I think you're still hurt....!"
And then there is the slightest creak of wood. Like an old staircase.
Alt freezes as he hears the creak. Marvin and Chase freeze too. Marvin clutches the knife tightly. He slowly stands up, careful not to make too much noise. Chase is still on the ground, watching as Marvin peeks out of the bathroom, looking towards the open basement stairway.
Marvin glances at Alt. Hide, he says in sign language.
Alt tries to help Chase up and looks around for somewhere to hide- where??
The bathroom seems like the obvious choice--after all, Marvin and Chase were hiding here before. But there's no other way out. The living room is an open floor plan, with wide archways into the kitchen. Any cabinets and cupboards are too small for a grown man to fit. There's the upstairs staircase. What's up there, again?
There were... bedrooms up there! Alt can remember. He quickly reaches out to grab Marvin too and then glitches them all back upstairs where he last remembers being.
They appear in that bedroom from before, looking the same as it had the last time Alt had been there--except for the windows. Outside is just pure blackness.
Chase stumbles, gasping, and Marvin holds him up in support. "Th-this could work," he says, looking around. "This could work."
And yet, there are still footsteps. Marvin sets Chase down on the bed and then hurries over and closes the door. "M-maybe he'll pass by if we block the door," he whispers.
"Good idea-" Alt whispers back and looks around- finding Marvin's suitcase and pushing it in front of the door.
"That might not be big enough," Marvin says. He looks around and starts pushing the desk.
Alt quickly helps him.
As soon as the desk is in front of the door, the footsteps stop. Then start up again... and stop right on the other side.
"You have... to sleep... eventually," a voice rasps. The words are strangled, forced through a throat that shouldn't be making that noise. "And then... I'll get in."
Alt staggers back, gasping quietly. Then, his eyes narrow in determination and start to glow. "...not if I have anything to say about it." He looks towards Marvin and Chase. "..stay here. I ... I think I can handle this!" He then glitches outside the door and without even waiting a beat, fires a bolt of lightning at the source of the voice.
The man staggers backwards against the wall--Jameson. Alt recognizes the Jameson from before. But now his white shirt is splattered with blood. He looks up at Alt with wide eyes, fear in them--and then the fear disappears, their bright blue color drained of vibrancy, and a cruel smile dances on Jameson's face. "Well... you're not supposed to be here," he says. In one hand he holds a kitchen knife, like the one Marvin took. But he moves that hand behind his back--and when he pulls it out again, the knife is suddenly a gun instead. "Say goodbye."
And he fires.
Alt quickly glitches away from the bullet by ducking and yells as he goes to try to tackle Jameson to the ground.
Alt knocks him down, but another loud BANG! rings out and he feels pain in his arm as a bullet tears a gouge in his upper arm. A hoarse laugh comes from Jameson's voice as he tries aiming the gun at Alt's head.
Alt screams out as the bullet tears through his arm and he crashes into a wall to try to keep himself up, gritting his teeth against the pain. He sees Jameson pointing the gun at his head and he hurriedly throws up a shield around himself. He tries to find Jameson's eyes. "J-Jameson... I.. I know you don't want to do this-! You don't have to do this! Wake up!"
Jameson's eyes flicker, afraid again. One hand signs something--Strong--and then the fear is gone and his other hand pulls the trigger.
BANG! The bullet bounces off the shield and into the wall. That laugh comes from his mouth again, and his body jerks upwards, moving in an almost mechanical motion. "You don't... understand..." The voice says, giggling. "It's not... going to end... until I get what I want." He stumbles up to the shield, pressing his face against it. "Did you look out the windows...? We're not in Kansas anymore, stranger."
Alt flinches as the gun goes off and then he stumbles away quickly as the creature presses its face against his shield. He's breathing fast and he tries to glance at the windows. "W-What? It's... it's just... night isn't it? W-What are you talking about? what do you want?!"
Jameson laughs. "Night isn't that dark, stranger. Not even out here." He smiles a cruel smile. "I want... my new life. And for that... I need them dead. But... you can do." He takes out a long, thin knife, almost a dagger, looking almost ritualistic, and stabs the shield.
Alt's eyes widen and he quickly holds out his hands and keeps his shield strong as he curls up. "W-What did you do?! What's outside?? Why do you need people dead?"
"Nothing." The voice whispers. "Nothing is outside." He smiles. But... underneath it, there's a note of fear. "And you won't need to worry about the rest of it." He tries to stab the shield again. And behind him, a small, dark rip appears.
"What? H-How did you-?!" Alt asks but then he breaks through the shield and the damage makes Alt scream and momentarily his vision flashes to white. He quickly tries to scramble away, shakily trying to fire magic but he's too panicked to make any connect. "N-No! G-Get away from me!!" He shouts, and in his panic he makes a soundwave to try to push them back. He's too panicked to notice the rip.
The soundwave throws Jameson across the hallway, pushing him against the wall. His eyes flicker, and for a moment, it's JJ again, gasping in surprise. He looks at Alt... and then at the rift. He freezes, staring.
Alt staggers to his feet and shakily holds out his hand, crackling green electricity building up in his palm. His other hand clutches at his bloody arm as he looks at JJ with panic. "D-Don't come any closer! I-I I don't want to have to hurt Jameson!"
JJ looks back at him. He raises hands, with difficulty, like he's struggling against something, and asks... Can you... put that magic in me? He's shivering. He doesn't like that magic. Maybe it can keep him down.
Alt's eyes widen, looking at his magic and then back at JJ. He slowly nods and looks sympathetic. "I... I'm sorry this... This might hurt." Then, he throws the lightning at him.
JJ doesn't resist. The lightning hits him full force and he lets out a little yelp. He shivers, but still gives Alt a slight smile.
At the end of the hallway there's a window. The window only shows blackness... but suddenly, the blackness seems to lighten. There are stars outside and the outline of trees. They were missing before. They are back.
Alt looks confused as he looks outside and he gives JJ a nervous smile. "Did... did it work...?" He asks breathlessly.
And Alt feels the pull of the rift increase.
He gasps as he feels the rift pulling and looks back behind him with wide eyes. "Wait... what?!"
He's not gone forever, but he's much weaker, JJ signs quickly. I'm sure we can figure something else out. He also stares at the rift. Is that... for you?
"I... I think so..." Alt swallows shakily. He then looks back at JJ with confusion. "I... I don't understand though- how.. how did it cause all that nothing outside? Why does it need people dead? W-What is it?!"
JJ shakes his head. I don't know. But I don't think that 'nothing' was entirely his fault. He looks back at the rift. I know THAT isn't. Then at Alt. Thank you. He smiles weakly.
And then it's too much.
Alt still looks confused and looks at JJ with worry and fear for what happens next- and then he's yelling as he gets pulled back into the rift.

@whumpril Day 18: Broken Glass
“Why do I think of a little birdie hitting head first into the sliding glass door?” Henrik tutted as he adjusted his magnifying glass over Jackieboy’s shoulder. Finding the right angle wasn’t easy when Jackie shifted to heave an exasperated sigh, then a hiss as the fragments of glass in his skin shifted with him.
“I would’ve opened the window before I jumped if I had time, trust me. I wasn’t planning to spend the whole afternoon on your table.”
“Ah, but quality time with me is one of your favorite things. Unbroken glasses with something strong after this, yes? Preference?”
“Maybe that dark honey whiskey we had after—agh!” Jackie’s superhuman grip tore the exam table’s padding and his vision went spotty when Henrik took advantage of his distraction and pried the largest shard out. “Hhh…T-That was dirty.”
“…Key lime pie with your whiskey?” Henrik offered, contrite. “My treat.”

Swap Across the CrystalVerse Chapter 22: Many Roads Diverge
Read Swapboys | Crystal’s AUs| Many Roads Diverge
Read SITCV | SATCV Masterpost | AO3 Link
Bro falls in the same way he's fallen before. But somehow, it feels... rougher than it did before. Like he's crashing through thin tree branches while flying through a forest. Eventually, he lands. This is the living room of a house. A big, open-space living room, decorated with dark colors and wooden highlights, with a sofa and a couple chairs and a big flatscreen TV. A grand front entrance sits on one wall, with front windows. To the left of this are archways leading into a kitchen and dining room. To the right is a wall full of windows. Outside the windows is a dark landscape... a forest. Across from the front entrance is the wall with the TV. Also on this wall is a staircase leading upwards, as well as two closed doors.
Bro shakily gets to his feet and looks around in panic. He doesn't care- this isn't a normal jump. He needs to find Alt and Jackie-!
"Alt!! Jackie?!" He yells out in panic, trying to see if there's any hints of them. He looks around the living room a bit before shaking his head and trying to find a way outside.
The front door is locked, but it unlocks from the inside with the turn of the deadbolt. He unlocks the door, and-- He unlocks the door and-- He unlocks the door and-- Okay, that doesn't make sense. He's definitely unlocked the door, but it still feels locked.
Footsteps suddenly rush down the staircase behind him.
"I'm gonna break it down with my fucking fists then!" a voice shouts, and suddenly a man in a red hoodie appears running down the stairs and bolting to the nearest closed door, not even glancing at Bro.
"Jackie you fucking idiot!" Another man runs down the staircase, with neat brown hair and glasses. "Do you even know how to break a door dow--" Unlike the last guy, he sees Bro, and he stops short.
"Yeah, he does!" Two more people come running down the stairs, a man with a mustache wearing a white button-up shirt, and a man wearing an elaborate mostly-black outfit with lots of lace and belts. "He's talked about it before--" The goth one is saying, when he also sees Bro and stops short.
The man with the mustache stares at Bro, eyes wide. You're not supposed to be here, he says in sign language.
"Chase?" asks the one with glasses. "No... wait, no."
"Fucking intruder!" The goth one points.
"Huh?!" The man in the red hoodie turns around. "Wait, holy shit, what?!"
Bro jumps as the red hoodie man runs down the stairs. Then, he meets the goth and man with the glasses's gaze with wide panicked eyes. As the goth one yells he holds up his hands, "W-Wait please I can explain! I... I am Chase but not your Chase! I'm.. I'm from another universe...!"
The four of them all stare at him. Then the one in the hoodie shakes his head. "This isn't the fucking time!" he shouts, shoving his shoulder into the closed doorway.
"Jackie!" The glasses one shouts. "You're going to hurt yourself!"
"Chase might get hurt, Schneep!" Jackie retorts. "If we can't find something to break the door, down, I'm gonna fucking do it myself!"
"Uh--I really think we should deal with the crazy guy claiming to be Chase?" the goth one says, giving Chase a nervous look. "Maybe--maybe he's the guy Chase saw earlier?"
Jackie runs into the door again, causing it to shudder in its frame.
Bro jumps and then furrows his brow in determination and tries to see if he can help Jackie. "I don't have time to dwell on this either! I need to find my brother and my Jackie!"
“Your Jackie?” The goth one repeats. “And your brother? Not a very good imitation of Chase if you have a brother.”
"I'm not trying to be a good impression!" Bro shouts back.
“Marvin, please, this isn’t the time,” Jackie says. He looks back at Bro, stepping aside and allowing him access to the door.
The door easily crumples under Bro’s super strength—though it feels unusually sturdy. Like there’s metal inside the wood.
“Whoa!” Marvin jumps. “How fucking strong are you?!”
Didn’t the door open the other way? the man with the mustache wonders.
As the door breaks he rolls out his shoulder and massages it some, pulling at his recent stab wound. He winces then looks down at the door. "T-That thing was stupidly tough- why do you guys have metal in your door??"
“Th-this isn’t our door!” Schneep protests. “Th-this cabin belongs to a friend of ours. Though—the question still stands. Why is there metal in the basement door?”
Bro stares at the basement and then curses, "This wasn't to outside?! Damnit-!"
Jackie runs through the doorway, staring down the twelve steps to the basement. “Chase?! Chase?! W-we’re coming to get you!”
“This isn’t the time to wonder about metal doors or which way it opens—though JJ is right, that was weird,” Marvin says. “We have to get Chase! Let’s go!”
Bro’s about ready to run towards the front door again but... he hesitates. Something was clearly wrong here- something that happened to another him. He glances at the front door and then takes a deep shuddering breath and whips around to the others, "...what's happening? What happened to Chase? M...Maybe I can help-"
The friends all glance at each other uneasily. Then, JJ raises his hands. We're not fully sure.
"H-he said that he saw someone outside the cabin," Jackie says slowly. "But, uh, that's impossible, we're more than an hour away from anything. We thought he was messing with us... but then he started acting weird... he tried to strangle Marvin, then started freaking out and saying he didn't know what was happening, then he started laughing and ran downstairs..."
Marvin rubs his neck. "Fucking weird."
"Wh-whatever it is, h-he might hurt himself," Schneep says. "We cannot let that happen."
Bro knits his eyebrows together, "...sounds like he could be possessed by something-" He glances at the stairs and then sighs, "Which... I dunno how much help I can be with that but... I've dealt with this before... but god- Alt would be so much better suited here.."
Marvin blinks, leaning forwards a little. "Possession? You mean--like there's a spirit in him?"
"This is not the time for jokes!" Schneep snaps. "Chase could be having a serious breakdown!"
"I-I'm not joking!" Bro yells after Schneep.
"Whatever!" Jackie runs down the steps.
Well, guess we're following him! JJ comments, then runs after him.
When the others start to run Bro has a mental battle with himself. He knows he needs to find Alt and Jackie but!! He's a hero! He can't just leave someone in trouble like this!! Finally he growls to himself and then rushes down the stairs after them.
The stairs end at a hallway lined with doors, two on the left, three on the right. The hallway ends in a big room without any doors.
Jackie is currently staring into the first door on the right. "He's not in here," he reports. "Check the other doors."
Marvin reaches for the first door on the left. "Huh. Locked."
"Chase?" Schneep calls. "Chase?!" No answer.
This is... bizarre. But not much worse than any other universe so far... Bro steps forward and goes to check the first door on the right.
Inside is a room that's almost empty, save for some cardboard boxes and a fuse box on the wall. There's an intercom speaker in one of the corners near the ceiling.
Schneep is trying the second door on the left. It's also locked. JJ skips the middle door on the right and heads for the last one. But that's also locked.
"Chase?!" Jackie calls. "Where are you?! We're worried!" He tries the middle door on the right. Also locked.
"Is this the only one open...?" Bro mumbles to himself and walks into the room. He tries to look around and then calls out, "Umm- Chase? You in here?"
Nothing.
Bro walks back out and frowns in confusion. This is... mega creepy. His instincts are going crazy.
"What the fuck?" Marvin whispers.
"H-he has to be in that big room at the end, then," Jackie says, pointing.
"Chase?!" Schneep calls, rushing down the hallway. Marvin and JJ follow him, and then Jackie-- And as soon as all of them are past the middle door, it opens too quietly for them to hear... but not too quietly for Bro.
Bro catches the sound of the middle door opening and whips back around.
Out walks a man with messy hair tucked beneath a snapback cap. The sleeves of his shirt are rolled up... and in one hand, he clutches a handgun. His eyes land on Bro, looking glazed and cloudy--and he raises the gun and fires.
Bro quickly shouts out, "WATCH OUT!" And ducks before going to try to grab the man- who has to be Chase- by the arm holding the gun and pinning him to the wall. "The fuck are you doing?!"
Chase slams up against the wall, hitting his head, but he shows no reaction. He stares at Bro with that same glazed look.
Jackie's head whips around at the sound of Bro's shout and gunshot. "What the hell?!" he shouts, and rushes over.
JJ, Schneep, and Marvin follow shortly after.
"A gun?!" Schneep gasps. "Where did you get that, Chase?!"
Chase mumbles something. The words run together, hard to make out. Something about... a game? Is he calling for someone?
Bro recognizes that glazed look in his eyes. "...h-he's either being possessed or influenced by something!" Bro tries to get the gun away from his grip.
Chase's fingers twitch weakly, trying to hold onto the weapon, but Bro easily slides it out of his hand.
"Th-this isn't the time for fucking jokes!" Schneep stammers. "Possession?! Wh-what the--"
That feels... right, JJ says slowly. What do we do, then?
"Scuse me." Jackie steps up next to Bro and shakes Chase's shoulders. "Chase? B-bro? Can you hear me?!"
Chase doesn't respond. He's still muttering something. "'m try'n', I c'n.. can' do it... g've it back..."
"Sorry Bro- I don't think its a good idea for you to have this." Bro says as he tucks the gun into his back pocket. He then leans down to get in his field of vision and waves his hand. "I think you should like... have some reaction to this though- the fact that we have the same face, maybe?"
Chase's eyes seem to land on Bro's face for the first time. He blinks slowly. "...huh?" The lights in the basement hallway flicker. Chase shudders as well. "...you're not supposed to be here..."
Jackie blinks. "The fuck? Chase?! What does that mean?!"
No use. Chase has gone back to his blank staring.
"Was he making fun of my accent?" Marvin mutters.
"Surely not," Schneep says.
"Why'd he sound Irish, then? He's American."
Bro stands up straighter as the lights flicker and then narrows his eyes at the ominous warning. " ... yup- definitely something inside him that's not supposed to be. Goddd- I need Alt... he's good with this magic bullshit." He rubs his head like he has a headache.
"There is no magic bullshit!" Schneep protests, his voice cracking a bit.
"Schneep, please," Marvin says. "Can't you open up your mind a little? Like--what the fuck is happening?!"
"Not magic! Do not let your witchcraft blind you to the more reasonable explanations!"
Jackie shakes Chase some more. "Chase! Please! Please!" His voice breaks with desperation.
"...J-Jackie?" Chase whispers. "Why're... you... here... Where's... Sam..." Then he slumps again. His hand raises up absentmindedly, grabbing onto Bro. It's unclear what he's trying to do, but it's probably supposed to be threatening.
Bro blinks in surprise but then grabs Chase's hand and squeezes it. "Hey, dude. I know you don't know me but... if you're like any other Chase I've met... you're stronger than you know. You can break out of this... please- your friends are worried," He tries to whispers encouragingly.
Chase's eyes focus on Bro's hand holding his. Then they drift to Bro's face. Marvin, Schneep, and JJ crowd around Bro, their worried expressions fully in view.
Then, suddenly, something snaps, and Chase gasps. "Wh-what just--what just--Sam?" He looks around. "W-wait, now why would--" And back at Bro. His eyes widen, freaked out. "Who the fuck are you?! What's happening?!"
Chase, JJ signs. Are you okay?
"I--I don't--" Chase shakes his head, more confused than anything.
Bro tries to hold onto Chase and raises his hand, trying to shush hum and calm him down. "H-Hey bro! Deep breaths its okay... you just went through something really freaky- and uh... I'm hard to explain but I'mmmm you? From another universe?" He grins nervously.
"Wh-what the hell?" Chase shakes his head more--and then stops, as his eyes land on something behind all the people around him. He gasps. "N-no! L-leave me alone!"
The others all spin around. "Th-there's nothing there, Chase, d-don't worry," Jackie says.
Bro looks back too and furrows his eyebrows. He then looks back at Chase with worry. "Are you seeing someone, Chase?"
Chase looks at him nervously, then nods. "Th-there's a man. W-wearing black. He's--shut up!" he shouts at that same spot. Then his eyes widen and he tries backing up into the wall. "No! N-no!"
"Maybe--maybe that's the spirit?" Marvin guesses. "There has to be a way to exorcise them!. I-it's going to be okay, Chase."
Do you think those books in the other room might help? JJ asks.
Marvin nods. "Th-they did look like spellbooks... but why would Jack have spellbooks?"
"Who cares! Go look!" Jackie shouts.
Marvin nods. "JJ, come with me! Chase, stay here. I-it'll be fine, I promise!" He and JJ run down the hallway.
Bro looks between Chase and the others as they run down the hallway and looks a bit panicked. "u-uh...! It's okay dude... i-it's gonna be okay!" He fumbles for his phone to see if it has any power left- or the ability to call Alt. ...it's weird... all the usual guys were here... shouldn't the others have shown up here too?
The phone still has power, and he's getting pretty good reception. But as he checks that, something happens. A small slit of blackness opens up on the opposite wall of the hallway. A breeze starts pulling at Bro's clothes.
"...what the fuck is that?" Schneep mutters, staring at it.
Bro’s eyes widen as he feels the breeze and he cries out in panic. “W-What?! Already??”
"A-already?" Chase stammers. "Wh-what do you mean? You see that too? It--" His eyes roll back a little. "It better just take you. I've worked too hard for this."
"Chase... what are you talking about?" Jackie whispers.
Bro looks even more panicked but looks at Chase with dread. “Y-You’re still…!”
Chase smiles a smile that is not his, and lunges for Jackie all of a sudden.
Bro shouts out as Chase lunges for Jackie and gets in between pushing Chase back and putting his arm out to protect Jackie. “I don’t care how hard you’ve worked for this, fucking demon! As long as I’m here you ain’t touching them!”
Chase--or the thing inside him--laughs. "I don't need them specifically," he says. And suddenly there's a knife in his hand. He lunges forward again--
"No!" Schneep's hand shoots out and grabs Chase's arm as he swings the knife.
"Holy shit!" Marvin gasps as he runs down the hallway towards them. Behind him, JJ follows, holding an old book.
The rift gets wider, the breeze pulling at Bro a bit stronger.
Bro jolts back and pushes Jackie behind him more. Bro’s eyes glow slightly as he growls at the thing inside Chase. “You don’t want to fight me, dude. Back down.”
He nervously glances at the rift getting wider- what is he supposed to do about that?! There’s a crazy thing trying to kill these guys!!
Chase's eyes widen slightly, and he laughs. "Alright, fine. Kill this one. I can find another." He tries to punch Schneep with the other hand but Jackie grabs it.
"Since when are you so strong?!" Jackie gasps.
"Guys, there's something in here that might help!" Marvin says, pointing at the book JJ's holding. JJ passes it to him. "I-I just have to read it out loud."
Chase's eyes widen. "What is that?" hisses the thing. "Where did you get that?!" He lunges again, managing to break free of Schneep's grip, but Jackie pulls him back.
"Stranger Chase, help!" Jackie gasps.
The lights flicker. Even in the moment of pitch black, the rift is darker.
Bro is caught between two worries- the rift’s pull ever present. But… he can’t ignore a cry for help!
Bro grits his teeth to determination and tries to pin Chase up against the wall.”Start reading then!” He shouts at Marvin.
Chase shrieks an unnatural shriek and struggles against Bro. The hallway lights go out, so JJ pulls out his phone and shines the flashlight on the pages as Marvin reads something in Irish.
Chase tries to stab Bro but Jackie grabs his arm and pries the knife free.
Soon, Chase's struggles become less like actual fighting against Bro and more random spasms, the creature reacting to the incantation.
“I-I think it’s working!” Bro whispers excitedly, loosening up his grip a bit.
Abruptly, everything stops and Chase goes limp. The lights turn back on again--just in time to show the black smoke pouring out of Chase's mouth. Smoke that forms a rough humanoid figure, with green glowing eyes that glare at Bro with malice.
Bro backs up as he stares at the smoke with wide eyes. “H-Holy fucking shit..!” He breathes.
The figure reaches for him... and then dissipates. Chase slumps forward, and Jackie quickly grabs him. "Hey. Hey! Ch-Chase, are you okay?!" he asks.
Chase groans. "Oww..."
Bro takes a second to breathe and then goes to check Chase over, “Are you hurt?”
"Everything hurts," he groans. "Muscles... all over."
"M-maybe you were holding him too tight?" Schneep suggests.
“O-Oh sorry I… I didn’t know-“ Bro says guiltily.
JJ sighs. I'm just glad you're okay, Chase.
"It does feel... lighter, somehow," Chase says.
The rift widens. Its pull is almost irresistible for Bro--though, once again, the people from this world seem less affected.
Bro yelps as he feels the pull of the rift even more. He nervously glances at it as he digs his heels in. He then tries to smile at the others. “I.. I’m glad I could help- I hope that thing will leave you all alone now!”
"Y-yeah." Jackie nods slowly. "Um... thanks."
"I am not sure what happened here," Henrik mutters.
"I think it's gone, though," Marvin says.
"Thanks," Chase breathes.
JJ looks him straight in the eye. Good luck.
And then the pull becomes too much.
Bro tries to smile at them all before he’s pulled into the rift.
----------
Jackie's fall is rough. He's not as well traveled through the multiverse as Bro and Alt are, but he knows this isn't normal. When he lands, he lands hard.
Jackie yells out as he falls and groans loudly, holding himself. “Ow ow ow what the fuck?!!”
This is the living room of a house. A big, open-space living room, decorated with dark colors and wooden highlights, with a sofa and a couple chairs and a big flatscreen TV. A grand front entrance--
Someone rushes up to Jackie and tries to punch him in the face.
Jackie yelps and manages to push himself up and back and jumps over some furniture to get away from whoever attacked him. “Um??? Hello??!”
"Whoa whoa whoa hey man!" Another man appears, wrestling his attacker back and giving Jackie time to take them in.
The attacker is a man with a mustache in a bloodstained white shirt, and the one holding him back is a man wearing a snapback cap and a bloodstained gray shirt. "W-we can't just smack him!" the cap man says.
The mustache man continues to struggle, looking at Jackie with glaring anger.
Jackie backs up and puts his hands up with a very confused expression. “…I feel like I missed a couple chapters here uh-what’s happening?! Why are we trying to smack me??”
"Ah, um--S-sorry, Jackie, I know you don't--wait a minute." The man in the cap blinks. "What happened to your face? Why's there shit on it?" He gives Jackie a once-over. "Are you... Jackie? Jackie Mann?"
Of course he is! the man with the mustache signs.
"N-no, wait, he... looks different... a bit."
“Uhhh yes I am- but um- jeez im not used to them having the same last name as me.” Jackie ruffles his hair awkwardly. “I’m Jackie Mann but probably not the one you know? I’m from another universe-“ He then pulls at his face and grumbles, “I need to find a mirror I can’t believe this stuff is still on- imma kill my kids-“
"I-I... um..." The man with the cap blinks. "W-well... I'm... Chase. This is... JJ..."
JJ glares at Jackie.
"I, uh... S-sorry, I'm having difficulty processing this."
JJ flips Jackie off.
“Y-Yeah uh… nice to meet ya-“ Jackie starts then blinks in surprise as JJ flips him off. “Woah uh- okay haven’t seen a jj do that yet I think-“
"Jays!" Chase smacks his hand. "Look--this guy is wearing different clothes than Jackie--Jackie wouldn't even own that shirt, he has enough stupid pan pun shirts as it is! H-he's different! Whatever's going on, he's different! He doesn't kn-know anything!"
JJ glares for a moment more... then slumps in Chase's arms, anger replaced by sadness. Sorry, he signs. I'm not even really mad at the Jackie we know.
Jackie takes the other two in and then it dawns on him that the red on their shirts aren’t some pattern they’re- “wait h-holy shit are you guys bleeding?!”
Chase winces. "N-no... i-it's not our blood, it's... O-our friend was..." Tears well in his eyes. "W-we need to get out of here. We--I-I don't know how you ended up in here, but we need to get out of here."
JJ heads over to the room's front entrance and tries opening the door. It doesn't open. He tries shaking the doorknob, pushing the door at the same time, but it doesn't open. He leans his forehead against the wooden door.
Jackie’s eyes widen, “o…oh…” he breathes, looking freaked out and worried for them. “What.. what ha..happened?”
Chase shakes his head. "I-I don't know. Jackie--our Jackie--said that he saw a ghost, a-and things just... spiraled from there... our two other friends are... gone..." Chase trails off, a haunted look in his eyes.
JJ looks back at Jackieboy. That ghost must have done it. He's using our Jackie.
Jackieboy’s stomach drops. “H-Holy shit I.. I’m so so sorry…” He looks around the cabin and then tries to see if he can get through any of the windows. “L-Let’s try to get you guys out of here then! Have- have you called the police?”
"Tried," Chase says shortly. "But the call wouldn't go through. Not because of lack of reception, it just... wouldn't go through. I got some freaky whispers, and nothing else."
The windows here don't seem to open.
I swear they had locks, JJ says. I swear you could open them.
"We gotta break them, then," Chase says decisively.
And that's when they hear the footsteps.
Jackie stiffens as he hears the footsteps and then looks around for something heavy. “Breaking them it is!” He shouts with a bit of panic.
There's not a lot of loose items around that look heavy enough to break glass but light enough to throw. There are some video game consoles attached to the TV, a lamp on a side table, an old-looking clock on that same table.
Chase picks up the lamp, forgets to unplug it, and trips over the power cord. "AH SHIT--!"
The footsteps are coming from behind a closed door. The doorknob rattles. "...guys?" A voice calls. "G-guys, the--the door is locked."
That voice... it sounds so much like Jackie's own.
Jackieboy swallows shakily as he hears his voice behind the door. He hurries and fumbles to grab the clock and then tried to chuck it at the window.
The clock bounces back with a loud THUD. He must not have used enough force. That must be it, right?
“What the—guys?!” The doorknob rattles some more. “Are you okay?!”
Chase hesitates. “Maybe we should listen to him…”
Are you crazy?! JJ signs violently. After all that?!
“If he killed your friends then we should not listen to him!” Jackie hisses as he picks up the clock to try again- this time harder.
“I mean—there has to be something more going on—” Chase says.
“Dude if a fucker kills your friends don’t trust them!!” Jackieboy says.
CRASH! The clock goes through the window, shattering it.
“Guys?!” The voice behind the door shouts in distress. The handle rattles some more—and suddenly the door opens, and out falls a man in a bloody red hoodie with a very familiar face. He looks at Jackieboy, confused. “What the…” Then he notices Chase staring at him and JJ clearing the more dangerous-looking glass shards from the window frame. “Wait! Guys! Don’t leave without me!” He scrambles to his feet and rushes over.
Jackieboy freezes as he sees the other Jackie and then grabs Chase and pushes him towards the window. “Go!” He then grabs the lamp Chase tried to grab earlier, rips it out to unplug it then points it out towards the other Jackie to keep him back. “N-Not another step closer, bitch!”
The other Jackie skids to a halt. “Wh-who the fuck are you?!” He shouts. “Guys?! Chase, JJ?! Th-that’s not me!”
“W-we know,” Chase stammers. JJ is already climbing through the window.
“Then what the fuck are you doing?! I can’t walk all the way back to the city in the dark!”
“Jackie, I-I’m sorry, but I just don’t think we can trust you,” Chase says, backing up. “Just—just stay here for the night. We’ll be back.”
“I’m not staying here with the ghost that killed Schneep and Marvin!” Jackie shouts, panicking.
JJ, outside, looks back through the window. That wasn’t a ghost, he says.
“What?! G-guys, I—I d-don’t know what’s going on.” Jackie shakes his head, clearly distressed.
Jackieboy slowly lowers the lamp, looking conflicted. “Hey dude I… I’m sorry but… i-I don’t know much about this stuff but… maybe that ghost like.. took you over?” He shakes his head, “Which means you’re dangerous I… I’m sorry-“ he looks back towards Chase and points, “Go! I… I can try to hold him off… I… I think-“
“Took me over…?” Jackie repeats. “But… when would… I mean, maybe that wire… I did wake up somewhere else…”
As Jackie muses, Chase climbs through the window, giving him one last apologetic look before running off.
Jackie makes no move to attack. He looks troubled. “But—that would mean I—I was the one to—” He looks a bit sick. “B-but I’d never! I—Th-they’re my friends—were my friends, I wouldn’t—”
“I’m sorry…” Jackieboy says sincerely, “I know you probably didn’t want to.., I’m so so sorry.”
Jackie finally focuses on Jackieboy again. “Wh-who are you…? How did you get here?” He whispers.
Jackieboy sets down the lamp once he’s sure he’s not in danger. “I’m you from another world- and … I’m not sure? There were these rips and-“
Suddenly, loud sounds come from an archway—it must lead into the kitchen because it sounds like lots of cabinet doors opening and slamming closed. The lights flicker and go out, but the TV turns on, revealing just static as the furniture in the living room starts to grind against the floor and move towards the two Jackies. And right in front of the front door, a small black rip appears out of nowhere.
Jackieboy squeals in fright as all the lights go out and all the furniture starts to move- and noticing the black rip. “Okay now what the fuck is going on?! Ghost if you’re there- q-quit it!”
The static from the TV increases in volume. Jackie covers his ears. And outside, the clock that Jackieboy had thrown through the window suddenly comes flying back, aiming directly for the Jackie from this world.
Jackieboy winces and then sees the clock flying towards Jackie and yells out and grabs the lamp again to knock it back like a baseball pitch. “T-The fuck?!”
Jackie stumbles backwards in shock. He laugh a little. “Th-that was cool, what you just did, but—A-anyway, th-this must be the—”
Jackieboy laughs in that nervous freaked out way, his hands shaking. “T-Thanks I wasn’t even thinking just-“
The lamp’s power cord suddenly writhes, lashing out at both of the Jackies like a whip.
Jackieboy yells out as the power cord writhes and throws the lamp as far as he can away and backs up towards the door. “T-This is too weird for me!! C-Chase?! Alt?! Are you around here?!?” He shouts towards the empty house.
Jackie ducks the power cord. “Who are you talking to?! Chase just left!”
“Not that Chase- my Chase! Bro Fantastic!” Jackieboy yells back.
There’s no answer. But the rift does get a bit bigger, its pull on Jackieboy increasing.
“Fuck it!” Jackie shouts. “E-even if Chase and JJ left, it’s gotta be better outside than in here!” He grabs the window ledge and starts to pull himself out, but the power cord wraps around his ankle and pulls him back. “What the fuck?!”
Jackieboy backs up more- more towards the door than the window before he feels the rift’s pull and he tries to go back towards the window. “What the fuck what the fuck what the fuck? What do I do?!”
“Help!” Jackie kicks at the power cord.
Jackieboy shocks out of his freak out and notices the power cord around his other self. “S-Shit!” He digs around in his pocket and finds Alt’s pocket knife again. He thanks his lucky stars he still has it then rushes towards the power cord and tries to cut through it-
It takes a while, during which the power cord keeps trying to wrap around Jackieboy’s hand. Thank god the cord is unplugged or he would’ve been shocked a million times.
Jackieboy sweats and grits his teeth as he works through the cord.
Eventually, the cord is cut, and Jackie tumbles out the broken window and onto the ground outside. He pops up again, staring at Jackieboy with wide eyes. “H-hey! Get out of there!”
But the pull of the rift has grown inescapable while Jackieboy worked on cutting through the cord.
Once Jackie is free Jackieboy laughs and stumbles to his feet, only to yell out as he’s pulled towards the rift. He looks at his other self with wide eyes and looks scared. “I-I’m sorry!” He yells before the rift sucks him in.
Jackie stares with wide eyes. He tries to reach out, but he’s not fast enough.
The other him is gone.
—————
Magnificent falls through a rough, rippling darkness, until he finally lands somewhere else. Outside the windows is an evening landscape... a forest.
“What the fuck?!” A man in a red hoodie suddenly jumps to his feet. On the sofa, two other men—one in a cap, one with a mustache—turn around. “Am I crazy, or did that guy just pop out of nowhere?!”
Magnificent groans as he lands on the ground, his vision dizzying and unable to focus. He sees the red hoodie bright in his vision and through his weakened state- he tries to reach out. “J…Jackie…”
“Y-yeah?” Jackie stammers. “Who are you?!”
“Holy shit he’s bleeding!” The man in the cap gasps. “Schneep!”
A man in glasses rushes out of the archway leading to the kitchen. He gasps. “Marvin?! Wait, no, wh-what the hell?!”
He’s not supposed to be here, the man with the mustache says.
“Well he’s bleeding, we gotta do something!” the man in the cap says. “There has to be a first aid kit somewhere in here!”
Magnificent growls a bit at all the noise and the rushing around. He dazedly sees if there’s any magic or power here but… it’s so hard to concentrate. That fucker Anti drained him of almost everything he had. It’s a miracle he’s still alive… but maybe he did that just to torture him.
As the others rush around and wonder about what the hell is going on, Magnificent reaches out, and feels some source of power… below the ground? A basement of some kind? There also seems to be faint energy all over, but it’s hard to reach, and not enough to do much of anything for him anyway.
“Don’t move him,” Schneep is saying. “You shouldn’t move someone who’s been injured this much unless necessary. JJ, if you really want to go check on Marvin, go ahead.”
“No, wait, I’ll go with you, Jays,” Chase says.
“Hey.” Jackie crouches down in front of Magnificent. “Who are you? How’d you get out here?”
Magnificent feels the power beneath him and he feels that deep aching hunger overwhelm him so much it hurts. He doesn’t have a lot magic left- can he even teleport down there? He’s snapped out of his thoughts by Jackie crouching down in front of him. He narrows his eyes and bares his fangs a bit and croaks out, “M-Magnificent… I… don’t know… big hole- a..a rift-“
"...huh?" Jackie blinks, confused. He backs up, wary. "Wh-why do you have fucking fangs?"
“Cuz I like em-“ Mag growls dazedly.
"Don't be judgmental, Jackie," Schneep mutters. "Some people like changing their appearance."
"Schneep, this guy literally popped in here out of nowhere, isn't that weird?"
"Yes... but I am a doctor and this man is hurt, I should not let my opinions get in the way. Hand me the bag."
Jackie still looks unsure, but he passes Schneep a red bad--the group must've found a first aid kit while Mag was spacing out. Schneep opens it up and starts rummaging inside.
"I'll... go get those wet cloths you mentioned earlier," Jackie mutters, going into the kitchen.
Magnificent studies Schneep through his dizzying vision as he feels that pull of power tugging in his gut. Impossible to ignore. But- he also can’t let himself bleed out- which he unfortunately can still do. So he stays still and lets the doctor do what he must.
"What the fuck caused these wounds?" Schneep mutters. "They are so deep but so narrow..."
“Razor sharp playing cards made of metal…” Magnificent grunts.
"What? Were you fighting Gambit from X-Men?" Jackie raises an eyebrow as he returns.
"Jackie, please, I must focus," Schneep says.
Schneep starts to cleans Mag's wounds. They're too narrow to pack, and there's nothing to suture them with in the first aid kit, so Schneep settles for wrapping them very tightly.
"We need to call an ambulance," he says. "Jackie?"
"On it." Jackie reaches into his hoodie pocket and pulls out his phone.
Footsteps approach from the basement staircase. That magical signature is getting closer... and, actually, it feels like there are two. A lighter, smaller current underneath a heavy weight of something dark.
Mag bites back any noise of pain that threatens to come from his lips as Schneep works on him. Then, he feels the signature coming closer and struggles to pull himself up, eagerly looking towards the door.
Chase and JJ come up from the basement. With them is a man wearing a black outfit with lots of lace and belts. His face is very familiar to Magnificent--and vice versa.
"Wh-what the fuck?" Marvin gasps. "That's--that's me?"
"No, he's not you," Chase says. "I mean--the eyes and the scars--"
"Look under that, he fucking looks like me!" Marvin insists.
Magnificent grins, that mad light of his coming back to his eyes. “Of course it’s coming from you…!” He giggles breathlessly. In a last ditch effort he teleports over to Marvin and tries to grab him.
Marvin yelps as Mag suddenly appears in front of him and smacks his hands away with a book he's holding. "What the fuck? What the fuck?!"
"Hey!" Chase lunges for Mag, trying to grab him. "What the hell are you doing?!"
"Did he just--what?!" Schneep gasps.
Magnificent snarls and is more focused on trying to grab Marvin as he dives for him again. “Give me… your magic!” he screeches- but he’s pulled away by Chase and he screams in anger and desperately tries to get out by biting Chase’s arm.
"Magic?!" Chase says, confused.
"Hey!" Jackie lunges across the room and pulls Mag back before he bites Chase. "What the fuck?!"
Witchcraft? JJ signs, glancing back at Marvin.
"I--y-yeah, I assume that's what he means," Marvin stammers. "He just--how did he--" He shakes his head... and Mag feels something shift, the dark power growing a bit stronger over the lighter current. "I don't know what's going on, but he's clearly dangerous. We have to lock him up somewhere!"
Magnificent snarls in feral rage as he’s pulled away more. He looks to Marvin, looking desperate. “I-I just need a taste of your magic- I can give you anything else in return!” He begs.
"What the hell is wrong with this guy?!" Jackie gasps.
Marvin's expression softens slightly. "Wait... hold on, I... I think he's just scared."
Marvin, you can't be taking this seriously, JJ says. He just tried to attack you!
"Maybe we're just misunderstanding this." Marvin steps closer, leaning in close to Magnificent... and his blue eyes darken to black. He whispers in a voice too quiet for the others to hear, "Help me kill these four and I will give you what you need."
Magnificent stills and then grins, wide and manic. He whispers back, “I need only a taste and I can do that with ease…”
Marvin--or... whatever this is--nods slightly. "It's a deal."
A breeze flickers through the room. He leans back, eyes returning to normal. "Yeah, I think this is just a big mistake," Marvin says... casually holding his hand out to Magnificent. "It'll be fine."
Magnificent quickly takes Marvin’s hand and smiles. “Yes. It will be.”
Once they make contact- Mag tries to take as much power as the other will allow.
The magic that flows into him is dark, similar to his own black magic, converting quickly to power he can use and giving him a jolt of energy.
"I don't trust this," Jackie mutters. "Marvin, are you sure?"
"I'm not gonna let go of him," Chase says. "Not until he explains what the hell is going on!"
JJ's eyes narrow as he looks at Marvin and Mag's clasped hands. Then they widen. Chase, Jackie, get away!
Magnificent grins wide, his eyes glowing with power. He teleports out of Chase’s grip then tries to slash his claws across his throat.
Chase screams and stumbles back, bleeding slashes across his neck.
"Chase!" Schneep gasps, rushing over and catching him as he falls. "H-hold on!"
"What the fuck?!" Jackie goes pale. He lunges for Magnificent, pulling back a fist to punch him.
JJ runs around Mag and Marvin to the first aid kit on the floor.
Marvin just... stands there. It could be excused as shock... but Mag knows better.
Magnificent laughs crazily as he sees Chase fall- then his head snaps to the side as Jackie easily punches him in the face. He falls to the ground then snarls, eyes snapping towards Jackie. He grins and wipes at his face before teleporting and trying to tackle Jackie to the ground, hands reaching for his throat.
Jackie jumps backwards, stumbling, barely avoiding Mag's attack. "I knew it! I fucking knew something was wrong with you!" he shouts. He looks around, and grabs a lamp from a table, swinging it for Magnificent. And while he does that, a slight black rip opens up in the middle of the living room.
Marvin looks towards it, confused. "That's... not supposed to be there," he--or the thing inside him--whispers under his breath.
Magnificent yells out as the lamp hits him and he staggers back. He growls darkly and whips out his hand, sending green fire towards Jackie and the floor. He’ll burn down the whole house if he has to!
He stills as he sees the rip open in the middle and he gasps, staggering back. “The rift-!”
Jackie glances towards the rift, momentarily distracted. JJ does as well, but Schneep is too focused on trying to stem Chase's bleeding to do so.
"Wh-what is that?" Jackie stammers.
Whatever it is, it gets slightly bigger, pulling at Magnificent, a breeze tugging on his clothes.
“No! I’m not done yet!” Magnificent snarls at the rift- then dives for the nearest person, aiming to impale Jackie with his claws.
Jackie screams, pushed to the ground and suddenly bleeding from his stomach.
"Jackie!" Schneep shrieks, staring at him in shock.
JJ stands up and rushes over, starting to kick Mag off Jackie.
Magnificent gets kicked off and he growls and tries to grab JJ’s leg and sends fire up his leg.
JJ lets out a hoarse shriek and scrambles backwards, flailing on the ground to put the flames out. The rift is slowly pulling Magnificent across the ground.
"I think your time here is coming to an end," Marvin mutters.
Magnificent cries out and tries to dig his claws into the ground to stop himself. “I thought you wanted my help!” He snarls at Marvin, “so- help me!”
"H-huh?" Schneep looks up. "M... Marvin?"
Marvin looks towards him, eyes turning black again, and grins. "Who?"
Schneep goes pale. Jackie starts to cry out but stops, wincing in pain. JJ tries to get to his feet but collapses from the damage done to his leg.
"I'll try, but I don't think there's much I can do." 'Marvin' walks over to Mag and grabs him by the wrist, pulling... but the rift is stronger.
Magnificent desperately reaches out towards Marvin and as soon as they touch, mag digs his claws in and tries to grab more power, even as the rift pulls him. “Then I’ll have to take what I can get!” He laughs madly.
Marvin's eyes widen--and the black in them flickers as Mag drains dark power from the creature inside him. Marvin lets go in instinctive shock, and Magnificent gets pulled into the rift.
 -----------
Alt tumbles through the darkness, landing roughly in another place. Outside the windows is an evening landscape... a forest. Across from the front entrance is the wall with the TV. Also on this wall is a staircase leading upwards, as well as two closed doors.
Alt oofs quietly as he falls and shakes out his head and then quickly glitches to his feet in panic. “C-Chase?! Jackie??” He calls out, trying to look for any sign of them.
There's no sign of his friends, or even Magnificent.
But then, outside, he hears the rush of running footsteps. Someone pulls open the front door and four people pile in. A man wearing black and a man with a mustache are supporting a man in a blue T-shirt between them, his head lolling. With them is a man in a cap, bleeding from a spot on his shoulder, his hands also covered in blood. They all stop in unison when they see Alt.
"Um--what the fuck?!" the man in the cap gasps. "H-how did he get back here before we did?!"
"N-no, it's a different guy, I think," the man in black says. "Hey! We've called the police! You can't--can't f-fucking do anything!" His anger is thinly hiding his fear.
Alt glitches back in fear as the others burst in. He’s holds up his hands, looking just as scared as they do. “I-Im sorry I.. I don’t know why I’m h-here or how I got here I… I just- I need to-“ oh god he’s having a panic attack.
"Oh, I, um--s-s-sorry?" The man in the cap stammers. "C-calm down. I mean--don't calm down too much, because th-this--"
"Can you come upstairs with us?" the man in black says. "I-it'll be safer up there, I think. JJ, grab the medkit, I got Jackie."
The man with the mustache nods--obviously JJ--and rushes to the living room coffee table, where he gathers up supplies and puts them in a red bag there. He also grabs a red hoodie lying nearby.
"I-it's gonna be okay," the man in the cap says to Alt, giving him a pained smile--pained because he's obviously bleeding. "We called the police. We just have to find somewhere safe. T-take deep breaths, stranger. Wh-what's your name?"
Alt shakily nods to the man in black and then really takes in the fact that they’re injured. “O-Oh shit uh o-okay… I… I’m Alt.” He glances up at the stairs and then starts towards them, “w-what’s happening? You- you guys are h-hurt-“
"N-nice to meet you, Alt," the man in the cap says, trying to sound calm. "I'm Chase, this is Marvin, Jackie, and JJ. W-we're hurt because--"
"Because some crazy guy broke into the cabin and is trying to kill us!" Marvin blurts out.
“W-What?!” Alt breathes in disbelief.
"That's not going to help him!" Chase says, head snapping over to Marvin.
"Well this is an urgent situation!" Marvin snaps back. "W-we have to get upstairs! Jackie needs to lay down!"
Alt then looks around and starts grabbing who he can and making sure they’re all linked up, “l-listen this is probably weird but I have magic! I can get us upstairs somewhere safe if you guys just picture it!”
"Wh-what?" Chase blinks. "O-okay, um--"
Alt then closes his eyes and tries to glitch all of them upstairs.
And then they glitch, appearing in a bedroom with a bed in the middle, decorated much in the style of the living room downstairs but. There's a suitcase at the foot of the bed.
"What?!" Marvin gasps. "This is the room I called!" He looks over at Alt, surprised--and a bit excited. "You really do have magic!"
Alt feels himself sway for a second but he’s able to stay upright and he shakes his head to refocus. He smiles tightly at Marvin and gives a nervous laugh, “y-yeah I’m a magician…”
Put Jackie on the bed, JJ says.
"Y-yeah, of course."
"Put him on his side, that's supposed to be good for this sort of thing," Chase says.
Marvin lays Jackie down on the bed, putting him on his side. Alt can see blood staining the back of his shirt.
JJ puts the red hoodie on the bed next to Jackie, and he reaches out and grabs it. Then JJ sets the medical kit down on the desk in the room and hurries over to close the door.
Alt walks slowly over to Jackie and frowns as he sees the wound. He hovers a hand over it. “I… I might be able to heal him and.. and maybe Chase too-“
"Heal him? With magic?" Marvin's eyes light up. "I mean--"
"A-are you sure?" Chase asks nervously. "I'd be okay with you t-trying on me, but... Jackie's hurt pretty bad."
JJ stares at Alt curiously. I don't think you're supposed to be here... but since you are anyway, I think it'd be very helpful.
"And since Jackie's hurt worse, shouldn't he be healed first?" Marvin argues.
"Y-yeah, but... if something goes wrong..." Chase trails off. "W-well... if you guys want him to try, he can try. But I think we need to unpack the wound first. Don't want him to heal with that in him."
"I can do that," Marvin says, rolling up Jackie's shirt to show the bandages underneath, which he starts undoing.
“Y-Yeah good idea…” Alt looks through his bag and finds his still charged iPad. Hesitates then starts to drain the energy from it to make sure he’s fueled up enough. He has to be careful with healing… if this wound was so bad he could really drain himself too much.
"There's blood getting all over the blankets," Marvin mutters as he undos everything they just did. "Hope Jack doesn't mind."
Chase laughs. "I think Jack would be more concerned that one of his friends died!"
Marvin flinches. "Don't remind me." He looks over at Alt. "Alright. Go ahead and try."
Alt nods and goes over to Jackie’s back and hovers a hand over the wound. He traces a healing rune in the air above the wound and mutters something in Gaelic. His hovering hand glows blue and his eyes glow and he lightly presses the light against Jackie’s back. He presses more magic into it and soon enough- the magic starts to stitch together the ripped muscles and skin- closing up the wound and leaving only a faint scar behind. It’s not perfect- but it looks like how the wound would look after weeks of healing. He steps away and the glowing stops and he leans back, breathing heavily. “T-There…”
Jackie's eyes flutter. "Wh.. wha...?"
"Jackie!" Chase gasps, rushing forward. He starts to hug him but then thinks better of it and stops. "Y-you're okay!"
"I... what... happened?" he mutters.
"You really are magic!" Marvin grins at Alt. "That's so--!"
Alt smiles and laughs a little. “Yup- h-here Chase I think I can-“
Suddenly, JJ makes a shushing noise. His face has gone pale. And in the silence that follows... heavy footsteps can be heard in the hallway, stopping right outside the closed door.
Alt freezes as JJ shushes them and goes still- staring at the door with wide eyes.
The door handle rattles. And when it doesn't turn, something scrapes against the wood... and then SLAMS against it.
JJ jumps. What do we do?! he asks.
Alt hesitates then glitches forward and puts a hand out. He signs to the others, Get behind me or hide! Then he glares at the door, ready to blast whoever bursts through.
The door shakes in its hinges. Marvin, JJ, and Chase all crowd behind Alt.
JJ grabs the medical kit and hurriedly starts wrapping up the wounds on Chase's hands.
SLAMSLAMSLAMSLAMSLAM-- The door bursts open and a man runs in, weilding a knife and wearing a surgical mask. He seems to hesitate for a moment seeing Alt, confused.
Even though he hesitates- Alt doesn't. He immediately shoots out some lightning at him, yelling out, "BACK OFF!"
The bolt hits the man dead in the chest, shooting him back out the open door. He falls to the floor, jittering slightly.
And then Chase gasps. "Wait! SCHNEEP?!"
Marvin pushes past Alt and rushes forward, grabbing the man. He pulls the surgical mask away from his face, revealing his face. "Schneep!" he gasps.
Alt's eyes widen and he lowers his arm, "W-What?! I.. J-Jesus I'm so sorry-!"
Marvin drags Schneep into the room. "Schneep, h-how are you alive?!" he gasps. "We--we saw you--th-there was so much blood--how?!"
Schneep is still shivering slightly. He looks at Alt. "What... did you do...?" he croaks out. "H-he has gone silent..."
"Schneep, a-are you okay?" Chase asks.
JJ kneels next to him, checking him over.
Jackie sits up. "Guys... Schneep... h-he was the one who..." he mumbles, trailing off.
Alt looks at Schneep confused- then back at Jackie, the gears turning in his head. "I... w-what's happening? You guys thought Schneep was dead and then... Jackie- are you saying Schneep attacked you?!"
Jackie nods slowly.
Schneep wouldn't do that! JJ protests. He looks at Schneep. But...
Schneep clutches his head, still shuddering. "Th-there is--s-s-someone--" he gasps out. "I-I cannot--but he is--he is quieter n-now--"
"Is this... more of your brain stuff?" Chase asks gently.
Marvin looks at Alt. "Or is it... maybe something more?"
Alt looks at Schneep and his mannerisms and feels his stomach drops. "I... I think he might be... p-possessed or... or maybe mind controlled?"
"Possessed?" Chase repeats. He frowns. "I-I wouldn't believe you if I didn't just see you heal Jackie like that."
"Y-you have to take this chance," Schneep gasps. "You must--must run, I--b-before he becomes strong again--Downstairs, m-maybe there is something downstairs--"
"In the basement?" Marvin asks.
"I... I can go check for you all-" Alt says, "I'm pretty fast...?"
"I--yeah, sure, I guess?" Chase stammers.
"What about Schneep?" Marvin asks.
"You must run!" Schneep repeats. He gasps and doubles over, trembling. "H-he is awake-ing!"
We'll get out of the room, at least, JJ says.
Chase nods. He grabs Jackie, helping pull him up. "Sorry, Schneep."
"Go!" Schneep shouts.
Alt stiffens and then uses his magic to put a shield around Schneep. "Y-You heard him! run! I'll try to hold him!"
The group nods, and rushes out of the room.
"Basement, basement, basement," Marvin repeats under his breath as they disappear down the hall.
Schneep shudders, pulling at his hair. "I-I do not know who you are, but--but thank you," he whispers.
Alt looks at Schneep sympathetically and kneels down by the shield, "...I'm a friend. My name is Alt and... I.. I know what it's like to go through something like this... you don't have to face it alone, okay?"
Schneep looks up at him and nods. "Alt... th-thank you. Thank you." He looks down again, hugging himself and rocking back and forth. And behind him, a small black rip opens up in the bedroom.
Alt looks at Schneep with worry and shakes it head. "It's no problem... I'm sure we can find a way to fix this, okay?" He flinches as he feels the slight breeze and looks back towards the rip and stumbles back. "W-What??"
Schneep doesn't answer. He continues to shake, his whole body trembling--until he suddenly stops. His head snaps up, a sudden look of anger on his face, and he throws himself at the shield.
Alt yelps and scoots away from the shield to look at schneep with wide eyes, "S-Schneep?!"
"You little bitch!" Schneep shouts--but it's clearly not him. His voice is different; the accent has changed. His fists pound against the shield. "Where did you come from?! You're ruining everything! It's all going to damn hell because of you and this stupid fucking psycho and his terrible fit!"
Alt cringes away from the shouting and then glares at not-Schneep. "Good! I'm glad I'm ruining everything! You shouldn't be possessing Schneep anyways!"
A cruel, dark laugh comes from Schneep's mouth. "I didn't choose him! He was just the first! I bet any of the others would've been a good fit!" He throws Schneep's body at the shield again, bouncing back, then grins at Alt. "Even you would have been good."
The rip in the world behind Schneep grows bigger...and Alt starts to feel its pull.
The shield is starting to crack- and Alt tries to scramble away with wide terrified eyes- then feels the rip pulling him closer. He panics trying to stop the pull with his feet. "N-No! No!"
The thing possessing Schneep bares his teeth at him in a sadistic smile. Then... he notices the way Alt's clothes are moving, and looks confused. He looks behind himself and sees the rift. "What?" he breathes, momentarily distracted by his confusion. Then his head snaps back to Alt, angrily. "What have you done?!"
"I-I didn't do this!" Alt argues, "S-Some fucker broke our device and i-is making rifts in other universes-!" He tries to dig his nails into the floor to stop the pull. "I-I don't know what's going on..!"
The thing laughs. "Well, looks like you won't be t-trouble for m-me much longer."
Schneep's arms twitch. His expression breaks into wide-eyed fear. "A-A-Alt?"
Footsteps come from down the hallway. "Schneep?!" Jackie's voice shouts. "A-are you still here?!"
Alt looks back at Schneep and then hesitates before he drops the shield. He breathes out, "H-Hey... y-you're gonna be okay, okay? I'm s-sure the others found something to help you and ... t-this can be over soon!"
"O-o-okay," Schneep breathes. "I-I will... h-hold on for them."
Alt smiles and nods, "G-Good..."
"Schneep!" Marvin bursts into the room, holding an old-looking book with a cracked leather cover. On it, Alt can see the faint image of an eye surrounded by Celtic-knot type designs.
"What the fuck?!" Marvin skids to a halt. Chase, JJ, and Jackie appear behind him.
The pull of the rift is almost irresistible.
Alt looks at the others and he looks scared but he tries to smile for them too. "H-Hey you found something huh? G-Good... you all can save Schneep then...!" He clambers to try to resist the pull but he knows he can't fight it for much longer. He looks at the others and swallows shakily. "D-Don't let him feel alone... okay?"
Marvin hesitates, then nods. "O-okay. We won't. Never!" He opens up the book.
"We'll take care of this," Chase says.
JJ looks directly at Alt. Good luck.
And then the pull becomes too much.
Alt smiles and nods to them before the rift pulls him completely through.
