“An Easter Poem”
J. L. Long
A pigeon walks down the sidewalk
As a young man chucks
Pebbles at her head
And mothers pull away their children
Saying, “No! Bad! Dirty!”
A middle-aged man grimaces
And says to his companion,
“I hate those rats with wings”
The pigeon just keeps walking
Gazing out at them all
With calm and steady eyes
The world calls her a rat
But God calls her a dove.
(From my new chapbook, FIREWORKS ARE JUST PRETTY BOMBS.)

“The Snakes Are a Metaphor”
J. L. Long
The snakes are a metaphor
The priest explains
The snakes are a metaphor
For all the Irish pagans
That St. Patrick converted
And all the pagans killed
The priest does not say
But that’s only myth and legend
There never were
Any snakes on the Emerald Isle
In all the time that
There’s actually been an Ireland
The snakes, you see, came later
As pets and zoo exhibits
Maybe that’s a metaphor too.

Tonight I shared a few of the poems from my debut chapbook at Rochester Writers Night, and I was able to record two of them: the title poem, "Fireworks Are Just Pretty Bombs," and "In My Dreams You Are a Ghost."

These 70 writers are actually all the same person - Ilan Stavans
youtube
On November 30th, 1935, dozens of writers passed away. They came from different backgrounds, espoused divergent beliefs, and wrote in a variety of styles. Yet almost 30,000 pages of their work was stashed in a trunk in an apartment in Lisbon, Portugal. So, what mysterious string tied all these writers together? Ilan Stavans explores the enigmatic life of Fernando Pessoa and his many identities.
Lesson by Ilan Stavans, directed by Héloïse Dorsan-Rachet.

I'm happy to be able to announce that I've just released my debut poetry chapbook, FIREWORKS ARE JUST PRETTY BOMBS (& OTHER POEMS). From the volatile mix of longing and loathing explored in the title poem to the bold defiance in poems such as “Burn Down Everything You Love” and “I’ll Give You Something to Be Afraid Of,” and from the quiet, broken prayer of “Merciful” to the heartfelt ode to community found in “Little Brother,” this poetry collection explores the full gamut of human emotion and experience.
The official chapbook launch and live reading is scheduled for the March Rochester Writers Night event on Wednesday, March 6th, 2024. The reading will be held in the Rose Room at the Rochester Public Library, located at 65 S. Main Street in downtown Rochester, NH, and will begin at 6 p.m. An open mic will follow.
The chapbook is available through Lulu Books as an ebook and from Gumroad as a paperback.

Finally surfacing after a week of something that was maybe COVID, maybe the flu, maybe something else, and my God, I've never been so sick in my life. Just laying under a mountain of blankets for days on end, shivering like a Victorian urchin child in Dickens.
Take care out there.

The Contradictions and Controversies of Marc de Montifaud - Noble Blood | iHeart
"In the late 19th century, French writer Marc de Montifaud was sentenced to prison for indecency in his work. But rather than being sent to the rather cushy location for literary criminals, he was sentenced to forced labor... as a woman. Born Marie, but ultimately living as Marc, the Comtesse de Montifaud remains one of the most interesting and enigmatic figures in literary history, a trans man who defied social conventions to live and work as he pleased."
