My first fiction cover! For Jennifer Brozek's THE KILIMANJARO RUN, a Shadowrun novella. Challenging piece to paint! I still feel like my comfort zone is a single figure on a simple background, and there's a lot going on here. Vehicles, landscape, transparent spirit animals, etc.

"The Underneath" for Shadowrun: Whisper Nets!
I really enjoyed working on this one. Flashlights in the dark, weird animals/monsters, mystery, barely visible subway tracks! I wasn't very familiar with Shadowrun before working with Catalyst Games, and it provides such great material to work with. Every art brief I get is so fun. Art Direction: Ian King

Shadowrun: Shoot Straight came out recently! Got to do my first illustration for the intro fiction section. Biggest piece I'd done to date. Stretches seventeen inches wide across the book.

My second illustration for Shadowrun: Astral Ways, along with some of the process leading up to the final (thumbnail sketch, “pencils”, and colour rough).
Had a great time doing this one! Really enjoyed painting the dwarf huntress, the monster (not sure its technically a vampire in game lore), and that shadow on the cave wall, which pretty much comprises the entire illustration.

Shadowrun: Astral Ways came out last week! Here's one of my illustrations in the book, and it was a tough one. Originally submitted version on the left, final published version on the right, and the illustration in context on the bottom.
I really wanted to capture the feel of a grey, overcast city, where all the colours and tones are muted, but my painting chops weren't quite up to the challenge to do that in a way that would hold up to publishing, with all the loss of value subtlety in the printing process.
We added a column of light, along with some rim lighting and increased contrast to make the elements distinct and give it some punch so that it would hold up on the page. Looking forward to the next time I get to paint a misty/rainy/shadowy scene, and can try again for that dull, grey atmosphere.

Another throwback Thursday while all my new work is under NDA. One of my favourite personal pieces from before I was doing client work. A Scottie, ready for war! This one got into Spectrum at the time. Can’t remember which volume.
Gouache on paper.

“Through the Swamp”
Throw back to way too long ago when I painted the Turtles going through a swamp along with a couple of Punk Frogs and Man Ray / Ray Fillet, with Armaggon and Leatherhead lurking.
Watercolour and gouache.

“Forest Trap” for Shadowrun: Null Value! Out now from Catalyst Game Labs.
My second illustration for the book. Again, wish I knew the full story here, but they just tell me the scene they want painted. I don’t get the backstory.
Had a lot of fun painting those ghost arms.

My first cover for Shadowrun! Lifestyles of the Shadowy & Infamous came out way sooner than I realized. With most of my work with Shadowrun I’ve had to wait about a year before being allowed to share it, but I finished this piece only a month ago. Shadowrun has so many great juxtapositions to explore, with runners and corps, magic and tech, and here, wealth and poverty. Lifestyles of the Shadowy & Infamous available from Catalyst Game Labs here.

Shadowrun: Null Value - “Resistance Club”
Null Value just came out a couple of days ago (available here: https://store.catalystgamelabs.com/products/shadowrun-null-value-runner-resource-book), and this is one of my two illustrations in the book. I don’t know the story here. The artists are told what needs to be illustrated, but not why any of it is there. I’m very curious, though.
Always a pleasure AD: Ian King
