omgggg i cannot believe the attitude of some of these “big blogs” and their desire to be above everyone else at an influencer level. this is tumblr. this is fanfic on tumblr.

when i joined this hellsite in like 2014 (???) i thought the whole point was to share fandom with each other in whatever form of media we liked… posting and participating in others’ posts is like, the whole point? it’s what makes it fun?

i won’t go on a long rant bc you said it so perfectly already! but i want to make my position very clear. if you’re on this app and act like you’re above anyone else (especially new/small blogs!!!) you’re a clown.

ok hot take: fuck the people in fandom on any social media who treat fanfic and fanart like you're an influencer. this goes for people who are fans of works, this goes for creators, literally anyone in fandom who treats it this way!! theres tons and tons of posts and im not the first and i wont be the last to bitch and moan about this but i am genuinely so sick of it lmao but this attitude of like, if you are talented enough or have enough followers/notes that you're the status of an influencer equivalent to someone 'big' on instagram is absolutely INSANE

initially me talking about this stems from the amount of people who believe they have this status and don't actually interact with other people lmao TOTALLY understand medical conditions like social anxiety that prevents people a lot of the time i have severe social anxiety myself and i struggle sometimes to talk a lot/reply to things at times or even like you're busy with irl work/things i get it i get it BUT there is definitely, i dont wanna say trend, but it is of people who just don't reply to people they aren't mutuals with lmao as though you're a huge creator who is too important to give a simple reply to peoples asks or replies on here (stuff that CAN have a reply im not talking about just thanking people 500 times)

by having this like, essentially a divide of if you are not mutuals with me i wont talk to you and it puts you up on a pedestal over these other people who like you and your work. it has created this issue thats still ongoing that people dont interact beyond a simple like with any works. there's people begging for comments and replies and asks with their works because people just like things and leave theres no feedback, but there's people who have created this divide that people dont bother anymore. (im ignoring my ao3 comments inbox im a hypocrite i KNOW) im not saying people should follow back everyone and become mutuals with everyone to talk but you can reply to things and take note of people who you dont follow for whatever reason without just thinking youre better than them

oh my god ive seen peoples rules/byf saying dont ask me to be mutuals because there's so much emphasis on mutuals meaning you can actually talk to each other like are u kidding me lmao because of this fucking divide that's been created

another part of this divide is the way people talk to authors/artists too. there's still a severe issue of young people especially who dont know how the fuck to talk or interact with literally anyone. again coming from a writers perspective the amount of times myself and my friends/other authors i like have had people giving unwarranted and nasty comments or just down right weird and wild comments on their fics is baffling. personally i feel like this is because of the divide and people see authors/artists as influencers, big people who will never see your comment 🤡🤡🤡 same people who likely send celebrities or the huge influencers of tiktok and instagram random ass messages because they will never see it and they dont or whoevers running the account doesnt and deleted them etc. but they connect that to people who they deem to be on the same level and think they wont see it or be affected by it. ive gone off on people in ao3 comments before because they say some STUPID ass shit and then theyre shocked pikachu at the fact i read and REPLIED like ???? because again people feed and perpetuate (?) this divide in making people think if we're 'big enough' on tumblr and ao3 in fandom that we are the same level of influencers and we wont see or bother with this shit

while im here bitching about this and this horrific 'influencer' state of fandom: fuck the people who are mutuals with you/follow you or whatever just to get something from you

i am not that big of a blog like i apparently may seem but even i have had a couple of people (honestly probably more im stupid) who follow/follow back without any interest in me or my blog just because they think im a big blog. its this attitude of climbing a ladder on TUMBLR DOT COM!!!!!!!!!!! fucking TUMBLR MAN!!!!! like are you shitting me????

i know not every mutual is going to be so interactive and people can follow you back because they like your attitude or blog and might not ever read/look/interact with your works like thats whatever people have lives its not necessary etc. etc. but i cant think of how to properly like put it into words lmao but theres some blogs like you just can feel that they dont give a shit and follow you because idk you are/they think youre a big blog and can get them followers/influence by being mutuals??? like i dont think this is super prevalant or at least not in my case imo but it's definitely a fucking thing cos people are weird cough cough big ass blogs cough cough

basically as a tldr for this giant ass pissy rant: fandom needs to stop with this influencer/creator and fan divide and be a community again. support each other no matter what, talk to people you follow and dont, dont put yourself up on this pedestal and don't let yourself be put up there because we're all just losers on this stupid, shitty ass website who like the same nerdy things that we would never tell people irl about

Just so y’all know: I can’t speak for every other fic author but I can say that I remember when people leave me kind comments. I recognize your urls and/or usernames on AO3. I remember you and sometimes in writing my fics I think to myself, “Oh, I hope this person sees this because they liked x in this other fic I did.”

Not only that—I go back and reread comments when I’m feeling low. I look at tags and reblogs and asks and wish I could hold them in my hand like a note from a friend on an old, torn piece of notebook paper.

Your comments have so much more impact than you know. So thanks to those who use the comment section to spread love and encouragement. We appreciate you.
