MELON & TOMATO SALAD WITH HERBS & FETA.
The first tomatoes are coming in full flush in my backyard greenhouse, and I couldn’t be more grateful. Here, paired with sweet summer melon, briny quick-pickled shallots, soft feta, and fistfuls of herbs, they’re in perfect form. This salad is lovely for any intimate brunch or bigger entertaining occasion, and provides a beautiful canvas upon which to showcase some of the season’s finest fruits.

THAT DESERT HOUSE: A RETREAT IN TWENTYNINE PALMS.
We drove up to That Desert House at 6pm on a Tuesday, equipped with laptops, taco fixings, beer, and lime popsicles. My friend Chad—who I spent years doing wacky experimental theatre with in college—and I were there for a writing retreat, both of us intent on wrapping up overdue projects under the generative canopy of desert sky. I’d been eagerly awaiting this visit for months, as I Insta-stalked prolific artist Lindsay Hollinger’s progress renovating her second iconic Joshua Tree Airbnb (the first is Casa Joshua Tree).

OAT & SEED CRACKERS.
Dare I say these seed crackers are the only crackers you’ll ever need? I dare. They’re packed with delicious texture from oats, pumpkin seeds, poppy seeds, flax, and chia, and bursting with flavor from caraway, fennel, salt, and a touch of maple syrup or honey. They’re gluten-free, vegan, one thousand percent customizable, and play just as well with a cheeseboard as they do with a stacked avo, tomato, and sprout sandwich.

USE YOUR WHITE PRIVILEGE FOR CHANGE | THE INCLUSION RIDER: For the past year, I’ve been finding ways to integrate the anti-racism work that’s most important to me into the influencer projects and campaigns I participate in, and have learned much—and been deeply frustrated—along the way. I feel, more often than not, that influencer events, trips, and panels are awash in a sea of homogeneous whiteness. And for the most part, brands, organizers, and PR companies are slow to change. So last month, I began working on a post to introduce my fellow white influencers in the food and wellness worlds both to the questions I’ve begun asking companies and organizers, and to the idea of an inclusion rider—the very same thing that Frances McDormand shouted about at last year’s Academy Awards, in light of #TimesUp and #metoo—which would demand greater inclusivity in influencer campaigns, panels, trips, events, and more. • This weekend, I stumbled upon an experiment that writer @ajabarberconducted to see how brands would respond to her as an influencer and a WOC (woman of color). In its (disappointing yet unsurprising) aftermath, two other bloggers took action: @sheflourished_ created the hashtag #influenceinclusivity, encouraging white influencers to call on brands and PR companies to do better, and @vixmeldrew went ahead and did the damn thing: She edited Stacey L. Smith’s original inclusion rider (from USC’s Annenberg Inclusion Initiative) for use by influencers. • CALL TO ACTION: If you are a white influencer, please click the link in profile, learn up, and take action. The tools are being *made available to you* to transform the way business is being done, to use your white privilege to create profound change in the food and wellness industries, and beyond. REBUILDING ENERGY | January delivered a serious wake-up call: I had low #iron levels, and needed a reliable iron supplement, stat.
