Saw a criticism of Max that said she has a “different personality every season” which is a really weird way to say she is a character that grows and is affected by the events of the story…. Like season two she’s new in town, she’s living in an abusive home, and she’s being terrorized daily by her brother. She’s afraid to reach out and make friends at first because she’s used to being treated cruelly and she isn’t comfortable being vulnerable in that way, and then because she’s afraid that Billy will retaliate against her or the boys who are trying to befriend her. She over comes that throughout the season, because deep down she wants those friendships and to be able to care for/be cared for by others. She gains confidence through the support system of the party, she opens up to them, and she sees them willing to stand up for her which allows her to finally stand up for herself and fight back, showing billy that she is no longer willing to take his abuse in silence. She has people that are willing to fight for her and stand beside her. Which means that in season three she can be a carefree kid! She’s having fun with her friends, she has an escape from her home life and people she feels safe and loved with. She’s happy, she’s goofy, she’s helping El find her feet and develop her sense of self worth. This is her high point. But then the trauma of Billy’s death, her conflicting feelings and guilt and grief change her. She’s suffering, she’s isolating herself from that support system. She’s a kid, and she experienced something horrible, and she’s dealing with it in her own way. She reverts back to a lot of her isolating, standoffish tendencies because those are obviously the ways she protects herself. We see towards the end of the season that she’s beginning to open back up, as the emotional support and love from her friends is brought back into her life. This seems like a really understandable, natural progression for her character after what she’s gone through. I really and truly do not understand people who came out of the season viewing max as like. in the wrong. when the show made it very clear that she was struggling with her mental health and coping with her trauma the best way she knows how (you know, as a FOURTEEN year old)
