“Yes, daunting--” She gestured for a waiter to approach their table, her gaze never leaving his face. Had he really been listening to all of what she said? “Learning a language at anytime can be quite an undertaking, never mind if you’re in school.” Jennifer cast her eye over the various books Moriyama owned, their weight resting in her palms. Flipping gently through pages, eager to gain a good idea of his performance in the English language and the grasp he had on the basics like verbs and tenses.
The acceptable parts of his bookwork, were his good understanding of tenses, and most verbs Moriyama could grasp—the mistakes in his work seemed to come in when structuring sentences—some completely correct, others all over the place and full of errors. Humming reflectively over what’s she gleaned from his work, pushing the book slowly away from her on the table. Jennifer now had a better understanding of how to help him, relieving the girl as she didn’t always have such a clear path ahead of how to approach a student’s work.
Hearing now that he insisted upon paying his share, was a shock. Students rarely offered. “How very kind. I must repay the favour, someday.” The girl coyly smiled.
Although Jennifer was unsure as to what that favour would be, one day she'd fulfill it. She had to admit, looking back at eyes as grey as her own was a comfort. "I would like for you to read a phrase and say it out loud, please Moriyama. Don't be shy to try. This would be a good place for us to start, your pronunciation is paramount." Reopening the book, and pointing to a correctly marked sentence. "Repeat after me." Then, in English: "I really like taking long walks on the beach." Not uttered with speed, but at a slow pace for him to repeat.
Moriyama listens, making a note of the word she used. He doesn't quite know how to spell it, but that's why he's here for a tutoring session in the first place. As she rifes through his workbook, he can't help but stare. The girl across from him is quite different from the girls he usually sees around school, and her grasp of the Japanese language helps ease his tension. Now if she were only to understand English, he's gonna have a heap of trouble trying to communicate.
"Like I said, it's thanks for this tutoring session and attending our matches! You don't have to pay me back," he says easily, brushing it off. He nods when she asks him to try repeating phrases. Although he's more comfortable with his written English, he's not completely shy to try talking in the language.
"Paramount?" Even he has trouble on the deeper words in Japanese sometines, but that's why he's in school, though he does need help sometimes. Like right now. His brows scrunch up, concentrating on her every word and trying to repeat the way she pronounces the sentence as a whole. He takes a small breath and tries his best to repeat it as close to her pronunciation as possible.
"[I... like... taking... wrong walks... on za bitch,]" he repeats in English, even slower than her. Then asks her in Japanese, "How's that?"

- Yes, I got you! - I smiled, after Higuchi-san’s words. - I’ll do my best to become a great manager! - and then, when I hear his words about Akashi-san, I was surprised. He seemed like a nice person, I couldn’t imagine that he’s scary. - Oh, really? - I asked Higuchi-san. - He doesn’t look like that.
During the practice I did the things which Higuchi-san told me: helping the team, towel and drinks. It wasn’t a really hard work, so, besides I tried to memorize the information. I was sure that I remember that till next day.
When the practice was over, I came to Akashi-san and coach to ask them about practice schedule, about my next duties and about what do they think about my today’s work.
- Asya
Akashi is finishing up his talk with the coach when you approach. He gives you a nod before wiping at his sweat with the towel you gave him. The coach tells you your schedule as well as the schedule for the team’s practice matches and official matches. Aside from fetching the team drinks and towels, the coach also tells you you’ll need basic medical knowledge and to help them pack up sometimes.
“If you work diligently like you did today, you’ll be a great manager for the team,“ the coach says, giving you a smile and a pat on the shoulder.
Akashi is just looking at you intently on the side. He doesn’t say anything but he doesn’t try to move away either. He’s just looking at you as if he’s studying you.

Unaware of the reason for his spirited response, she realized that he made a fair point. Her circle of friends ended at two, some other exchange students who she had the opportunity to bond with over the years, and that’s how Jennifer preferred it. She seemed to connect more with teaching staff, and those who worked in the administration offices through all of the organizing she involved herself in for club activities, and school events.
Being behind the scenes to accomplish her goals for Kaijo’s end, well—that’s just the way she liked it. “It doesn’t surprise me,” Jennifer lowered her head modestly, “I keep myself busy. My main passions go towards tutoring, and being head of the Debate Club, the Home Economics Club, too–amongst the endless event planning I throw myself into.”
Moriyama-san’s compliment, unlike ones from many others, didn’t go sailing over her head this time. It was one-on-one, and so Jennifer found she had the time to take it in and appreciate it for what it was. “How kind.” A pause. “Thank you.” Anyone close enough to Jennifer would be able to tell you that the grey sparkle in her large, almond shaped eyes had just returned.
“Now. If you could please bring out any homework, or material from your English class, we can get started. We can start small; no need to be scared or daunted by what’s in front of you—we’ll get through your studies together,” The girl proudly announced in her naturally low tone of voice, “I have a high success rate, from every student who comes to me for help. So, no fear. Alright?” It was fortunate for the two of them, that the table was more than wide enough to spread out papers, highlighters and pens. “It’s been a warm day today, hasn’t it? Warm for the spring season.”
Delicately her fingers leafed over the menu printed onto a layer of rice paper, fixed on top of rose coloured card and deciding on her drink—a bubble of excitement laying underneath from the joy of choosing. “I feel like a Jasmine Iced Tea. And I’m paying, okay? Order anything you’d like. I’m sure you’re hungry from all the basketball practice you attend. In fact, I definitely recognize you from matches I’ve recently watched.” Smiling again, she admired all that the sport’s clubs did for the school—which meant automatic respect for the boy in front of her. “You’ve all come such a long way. Oh, thank you, dear.“ Her eyes roamed over what Moriyama-san gave. Ah. Much room, for improvement.
Moriyama is impressed by how much you do, and he can’t help but smile when you talk. You’ve got a really nice voice, he thinks, and the way your eyes just leaves him staring in awe. Honestly, you take his breath away! He manages to bring his mind back into reality, already taking out books for his English assignments.
“Daunted?” he repeats, his eyebrows furrowed. Once he has everything he needs set out, he also looks through the menu before looking up at you. He shakes his head and stares at you with a firm gaze. “No can do! I can let a lady pay for the entire bill on her own, specially since you’re already doing me a favor by tutoring me in English.“
He gives you a charming smile. “Let me pay for half of the bill, okay? Consider it thanks for coming to our matches and tutoring “

hearing his demanding tone regarding the identity of the person behind the letter, i widen at my eyes at him and shake my head, frantically waving my hands in front of my face. “no— that’s not it- she just asked me to hand it over to you, i promise!” i stutter, hoping he doesn’t press on the topic any further.
although, i’d be lying to myself if i said i wasn’t glad he said all that just now; in fact, it made me feel relieved that he didn’t entirely see through me and question me about my emotions instead.
“don’t you dare approach the girl who wrote the letter about any of this, seijuro, i swear,” i say, intently staring into his eyes. “this has nothing to do with what’s bothering me,” i lie, my voice toning down after every word, as i tuck my hair behind my ear and look away once more.
Akashi searches your face to see if you're lying to him and trying to protect this girl. Somehow, he still knows that you're lying to him, but he just doesn't know about what. Since you told him not to approach the girl about this, he decides that maybe something else is bothering you. Or something else is at stake.
"Alright," he says, tucking the envelope into his bag before he looks at you. You're trying to avoid eye contact with him, and he's not sure if it's because you're scared of him finding out about something or scared about someone else finding out about it. "You can trust me."
He tries to draw your attention and have you look at him. "You know you can tell me anything and I'd be happy to help you out, Yeri."

( Moriyama Yoshitaka from Kaijou, KNB. )
“Goodness me, you’ve actually shown up.” The exclamation was soft in the subdued and still atmosphere of the cafe. Jennifer gently rose, softly nodding to the student she actually recognized. A boy, from the basketball team. Tutoring a third year, it is! She was careful to choose a place which served both savoury and sweet menu items, preferring to give special attention to the students under her care, and as a senior it didn’t matter what year they hailed from. While tutoring, she couldn’t afford for them to flag in front of her eyes.
The first years didn’t always have the best time keeping; some were still getting used to the layout of the school and schedule—however, for third years there was little to no excuses for losing your bearings. Anyone who needed to improve their English for classes and upcoming exams, including revision and homework—all were directed to Jennifer, originally a transfer student from the United Kingdom.
A tall, copper haired girl with neverending corkscrew curls, with looks which made her appear older than eighteen was excelling in most subjects, and in turn proficient in Japanese. The Nanny who brought her up from a very young age, was herself from Nara Prefecture and taught her well. A glowing afternoon sun highlighted the dark brown freckles sprinkled across her cheekbones, something she didn’t appreciate.
“–And you’ve shown up early, no less. Sit, sit. I should treat you.” Her wide mouth stretched into a grin, offering for the young man to sit down. “You’re Moriyama Yoshitaka, aren’t you? I’m Jennifer Pennyfortune, your tutor. I also happen to be in your year.”
- ( Jennifer, she / her / they )
Moriyama, despite his dedication, has continued to fail in English classes. Not because he doesn’t put any effort into it, because he does, but because he just has a hard time understanding the language. Aside from the words he needs to know for basketball, he doesn’t know heads or tails about it at all. Honestly, English is a confusing language, and in his eyes, he doesn’t need to learn it for much else aside from passing school.
In a last ditch effort, he asks for a tutor and said tutor is supposed to be quite good at English. He’s supposed to meet them here, having went straight to the cafe they told him right after practice. His eyes instantly light up the moment he sees you. To be honest, he was dreading the tutoring session, having to spend more time on a material that’s honestly torture to him, but seeing you in all your pretty glory makes him think he can push through the tutoring sessions just fine.
“Yeah,” he replies, almost breathless. “Thanks. It’s nice to meet you too. Your Japanese is really good. How come I never noticed you around before?“

i absolutely despise how obvious and dramatic i’m acting—how my not-so-hidden feeling of conflict continued to fill the atmosphere with gloom. of course, i know he’s well aware that something is bothering me; i know that at this very moment, he’s silently observing my every move, trying to figure out what’s in my head. he’s akashi seijuro, after all.
my thoughts get interrupted when he finally calls me out. ah, there it is. however, i continue walking alongside him, keeping my eyes on the path in front of us. “yes, there is,” i admit silently.
but that’s all i say, before opening my bag and taking the envelope in my hand. “but never mind that! anyways, someone told me to give you this, and she said it’s really important,” i say, looking up at him and handing it over with a grin to try and suppress my... unfamiliar feelings. i couldn’t keep hiding the letter anymore, especially since the girl had such genuine intent. i just hope he doesn’t figure out that this was indeed the thing that was bothering me.
Akashi, upon calling you out, expects you to continue and explain to him what was bothering you, but you don’t say anything else. He looks at the envelope you’ve given to him, turning it over in his hand. It’s a love letter, that much he knows, since he’s gotten a few of them before. But he’s more concerned about the way you’re acting right now.
“Is this what’s bothering you?“ he asks straight out, narrowing his eyes in suspicion. “Did whoever give you this threaten you?“
He might be a prodigy and an undeniable genius, but even he is oblivious when it comes to certain things. One thing he doesn’t really know how to detect or handle is the romantic feelings of others. Maybe because he’s mostly focused on his basketball career right now, or maybe he himself has some unresolved feelings stirring deep inside him.
“Tell me and I’ll deal with her tomorrow.“

“I’m Asya. Nice to meet you,” I smile and shake his hand. “I’d be happy to become a manager for such a capable team!”
To be honest, even I wasn’t interested in school clubs before, I’ve heard a lot of rumors about this club and about their captain. I didn’t think much of it though.
Now I just feel interested and motivated to be this team manager and to try my best to become an amazing manager. My first impression of the captain and the team was also good. So I’m just waiting to be briefed on my manager duties.
Akashi smiles and holds your gaze for a little longer before he moves to talk with the rest of the team. Said team has been looking over your way, wondering who you were and what you were doing here. When Akashi explained to them, they just nod and go back to their practice.
The coach approaches you and hands you a clipboard with all the critical information on all the team members. The previous manager comes up to you and begins to explain what you’ll be doing as a manager.
“You have to help around the team. Towels, drinks, and first aid,“ Higuchi says then points to the clipboard in your hand. “You’ll also need to at least memorize their information a bit, and observe them really well, so you can give insights on their current skill. Don’t worry if you don’t get it the first time! You’ll get the hang of it with the team captain providing you points when you need it. But between you and me, sometimes he gets a little scary, so try not to mess up too much.“
