George’s eyes flick towards you briefly during his conversation at the dining table with Mr. Mccallister. The subtle widening of his smile as he gauges your reaction to the exchange. You nod at him surreptitiously, attempting to reign in your own smile that grows wider around your silverware with each passing glance.

You've been trying to ward off his looks all evening. You'd been forewarned by Mrs. Fane that it simply wouldn't do to be caught making cow-eyes at such an infamous figure, especially with his wife present (though Mrs. Fish had heartily encouraged you—surely for the sake of manufacturing and spreading some good gossip). "Are there still plans to build a separate music house?" Marian asks, and your stomach swoops with nerves as the atmosphere grows stilted. She seems well-aware of the mine that she's just tread over, conversing at a dinner table with equal parts old and new New York. "I would've thought now that certain families have been brought in, there might be opportunities for additional boxes at the Academy of Music," She adds carefully.

"Perhaps," Mrs. Fane concedes, an alarmed smile still frozen on her face. "There is a consensus from many of the 400 that any new conservatory would be...Avoided."

"Would all avoid it?" Bertha arches a brow, peering challengingly at her dining companions.

"It is hard to know, truly, but one may suspect," Mrs. Fane insists, smile widening.

"Would you?" You hear Mr. Russell ask. It's a moment before you realize he's directed that question at you, and a touch longer still to truly register the gazes of all concerned shifting to you.

"Avoid it?" You clarify. "Certainly not. I'm happy to attend any venue where beautiful music is played."

"Even if deemed unacceptable?" Mrs. Fish presses, almost unable to hide her scandalous glee.

"The standards for what is acceptable seem to be changing on a daily basis. Those that lag behind the trend will be left behind."

"And if I may say so, you shall remain at the forefront, my dear," Mr. McAllister declares, raising his glass to you. You offer a small, chastising smile before reaching for your wine. You mark Mr. Russell's gaze on you again, and your stomach flips as his smile widens just a touch. You have to take an unacceptably long sip from your glass to hide your own widening, traitorous smile.
