Regenerative work takes patience, perseverance and commitment ... it also takes empathy (the ability to understand the thinking, emotions, experiences and ways of being of those we seek to serve and bring on the path of sustainability and regeneration - it takes being able to creatively use the language of those people and sectors of industry and society we, as regenerative change makers, are aiming to help transform for their own benefit and all life). Agression, forcing, coercion, guilting do not work in the long run, any many times in the short run either. ✊ . A picture taken during a waste reduction program we designed, developed and now implementing to help restaurants reduce and ideally eliminate waste (highly polluting, in nature persisting waste) towards a #zerowaste future. We find that some restaurants are already employing #wastereduction practices, and we are learning a lot about their needs to transition further. All we trained so far were thrilled about the positive ramifications of the custom solutions we proposed to them for their business, our shared environment and society, and our common future. We are systems' thinkers at #aboutandforsustainability and #reearth and we know each individual, business, government, nonprofit and academic institution we serve, needs solutions that work for them (we also make them work for all life to benefit from). We understand it takes time and apply time and culture appropriate approaches 🌱 . We think local and act #local! We think global and act #global! Our approaches to create change through education, training, awareness campaigns, and boots on the ground consulting and implementation will be shared this year ✌ . Have you dreamt of becoming a beekeeper? 🐝 . Pollinators, like Honeybees, are important to our ecology and balance of the environment. In addition to Honeybees, native bees, butterflies, birds and bats are also responsible for pollinating many types of plants. Supporting our pollinators through small scale urban beekeeping, native plant restoration, and butterfly habitats, ensures diversity and survival within our plant and insect communities. . In our Bee Guardian Apprenticeship you will gain a solid foundation in how to become a beekeeper. We’ll cover the equipment needed, methodologies, maintenance, and troubleshooting. In addition to leaving the course ready to start beekeeping, you’ll have an understanding of how pollinators are important to our environment and food system, and also learn how to support other species like native bees and butterflies. . We call this the Bee Guardian Apprenticeship, because we want to create stewards and guardians of our environment and delicate insect communities. We hope you join us this spring session! We’ll meet once a month (March - May) for a weekend (Sat/Sun) and in between there will be suggested readings and online check ins. When weather permits, we’ll suit up and perform hive inspections on some of our established hives. Hands on learning is a great way to jump start your journey with the honeybees! We have the power to create the future (part 1) 🧙‍♂️ . Although I grew up farming and homesteading, the regenerative kind, it wasn't till my adulthood that I discovered the power, joy and purpose an earth and people centered lifestyle provides. From 14 to 24 all I wanted and sought to get was the promise of the highly technological and convenience culture - fast food, fast cars, fast everything - with no awareness on what it really took to make that possible. It was in higher education when I discovered that "fast" and seamingly "easy" lifestyle, the search, finding and dreams of "oppulence" come with high prices on one's life and everyone else's - waste, pollution, inequality, violence, war and the likes ... ecological and social degradation that influences all life 😐 . In my Master's project I discovered that people are definately open to understand what the problems with living unaware, disconnected, disinterested, complacent, disempowered and uninvolved are, both at the personal and global level. Some pushed back and some got offended by the fact that the state of our unfulfilled personal and collective existence, as well as that of our environment, is completely in the hands of individuals (especially those that have relative freedom and opportunity to live life and act as they please). And even though most, approximately 1000 people that participated in my thesis project, had some ideas on how they can exercise that power, and take action for the good of all and all life, they still needed more ... more knoweldge, more convincing, more reassurance, more validation, more power to draw upon and take action 📈 . So I decided to give it to them and many more - to the best of my abilities. We had a revelation 🤔 . We thought our permaculture based education was for people that seek self reliance ... until we started experiencing our graduates as future makers, creators and leaders, as world citizens that live life to create a regenerative legacy for all to benefit from. We realized that we are going to live in this world and said to ourselves: "What a great retirement investment and insurance, to inspire, empower and support people to create the world we want to live in! For sure others would want to invest in this too!" 😉 . When people engage in learning experiences that reveal how nature works and how they can act and live in alignment with her to create health, abundance and peace, they are forever transformed. The awareness that they can participate in creating a regenerative and sustainability based future for all with simple, practical, accessible solutions, forever changes the way they live. When they discover that earth and people centered actions are not a sacrifice, but enlightened self interest, with both short and long term rewards of purpose and well being, life starts to make a different kind of sense.🌱 . What we talked to our son about during a nature walk: The back story: Anna Maria and I have been through an amazingly busy year this year. We got pregnant, taught college courses, led permaculture and beekeeping courses from the homestead in San Clemente, gardened a lot, designed 8 ecological gardens, got a farm in the high desert, completely renovated a dilapidated house there (by ourselves and Anna's dad + a few friends here and there), gave birth at home, drove back and forth from Orange County to Anza a lot, started a book and created curriculum for 3 new transformative courses in the realm of sustainability, permaculture and regenerative leadership. We also planned and launched a Crowdfund to take our work to the next level. It has been non-stop! We have been passing this trailhead just 30 minutes from our new headquarters at Desert Bloom Farm almost every week since the beginning of the year. Every time we would say: "we should go check it out and take Helios there". He definitely heard us from the belly and after he was born. This week he did something out of ordinary when we were getting close to this place. He always sleeps in the car ride and never really cries. This time he did cry a lot and we stopped (we also realized that he wakes up many times when we pass by this place). So we went on trail and on it he "asked us" about the big trees he was seeing. He did not want to know about those particular ones, but about trees in general, about what and who they are. And most importantly "why they are". We were visited by an inspiring international leader and advocate for a regenerative and sustainability based world @luissaburton ✊ . Talking for a few hours we realized how much our visions for the world align and that us connecting was not accidental. We learned not only that our visions align, but how to make them happen too - beyond awareness raising and beyond education, to actually bringing transformation of environments and communities to life. #permaculture was at the top of the list of course! It is fate to meet and open doors to collaborative shared impact with individuals passionately committed to our humanity's future.
