listen the way that most people discuss erotica reveals that NOBODY thinks it's a valid art form/device, and i'm sick of it!

both fans and critics of erotica, in the mainstream and in fandom, dismiss erotic writing as "just porn"; either to exempt it from criticism or dismiss its artistic value. while i have absolutely no problem with people engaging with erotica solely or primarily for the purposes of sexual gratification--pleasure is as valid an artistic goal as any--erotica is still art.

part of engaging honestly with art is examining it through the lens of the purpose for which it was created, and measuring its effectiveness against that. i am not saying that we need to have a "higher purpose" in writing erotica for it to matter. rather the opposite: the fact that it exists is what makes it matter.

erotica is like any other storytelling tool, one that represents the state of whatever relationship is being depicted between the characters involved. sometimes it is even the most appropriate way to represent the state of the relationship, because you can express things through depictions of physical intimacy that cannot be expressed through dialogue or internal narration.

and like any other storytelling element, erotica can be executed poorly and it can be executed well. but it will always serve a purpose in the story because everything that comprises the story serves some purpose. if it exists in the art, it contributes to the art.

sorry idk but the way the world is so fast and the people in it still want it to be faster is sooo annoying to me. people groaning while standing in line for 3 minutes people being mad the train ride is gonna take 2 hours people complaining that the bus is a few minutes late people being angry that construction work is taking months even though it used to take decades. don't you see the world is already so so so fast in every single aspect can't you understand that being mad will do nothing and just make your mood worse. enjoy the moments of stillness you're given. just stand in line and look at the people around you. sit on the train and watch the scenery. you'll get there.
