BBS is a tragedy in many ways, but one of the things that gets me is that the catalyst, the one big thing that caused this mess to begin with, is so avoidable.
Like, the story starts primarily because Terra starts to fear himself (because of the darkness he has unwittingly 'used') and this causes a spiral of doubt and obsession. A spiral which he could've escaped from or maybe not even started if he just 1) had been taught the balance between light and dark properly (that darkness is more than just unquestionable evil, that light is more than unquestionable good, that they can and should co-exist in balance), and 2) had consistent socialization from more than the same 3 people.
Like. BBS is a cautionary tale about what happens when people aren't exposed to a wide enough variety of people and, therefore, end up naive and overly trusting because they never learned that people have ulterior motives. Terra is consistently manipulated and used by people literally everywhere he goes, because he can't see that they might not have the best intentions! He can't see the red flags because he doesn't know there are red flags to look for!
Xehanort knows this. It's why he targeted Terra to begin with: because he would be susceptable to his words. The main reason he couldn't use Aqua is because she was too confident in her own values, she didn't have the seed of doubt that Terra had. It's the only thing that prevents her from being used the same way he is, even though she is just as naive and trusting as he is.
Ven probably has it the worst socialization wise. Unlike Terra and Aqua who, presumably, has/had a family and life outside of the Land of Departure prior to beginning training there, Ven doesn't remember anything before then (not that he had much he'd be happy to remember anyway). And since he's the youngest and most 'fragile' one (due to being in recovery for most of his time here), he gets somewhat coddled and shielded by everyone else. Not to mention the way Eraqus completely forbid him from leaving and never intented for him to ever see worlds outside the Land of Departure. Sure, Terra and Aqua aren't typically supposed to leave either, but at least they'd be allowed in certain situations. Ven wouldn't.
Ven isn't allowed to interact with anyone outside of home. He's not allowed anything that involves the outer worlds. (He and Naminé are a bit alike in that sense. Though at least the people he's stuck with are nice to Ven and do genuinely care for him, unlike Naminé...)
BBS happens largely because Eraqus failed as both a teacher and a parental figure to all of them, but Terra most of all.

Please don’t let fandom ruin something you love. Walk away and unfollow the fans and enjoy the thing by yourself, or find a limited circle of people who ignore the discourse, or get your irl friends into the thing and collectively ignore the Internet community, or blacklist from here to the moon if you need to and only ever scroll through your rarepair ship’s tag on AO3. But don’t let fandom distort a show or a movie or a book or a comic you used to love so badly that you can’t enjoy the original anymore. Please. It isn’t worth it.

So it’s kind of interesting rewatching Code: Lyoko as an older 20-something, at least in part because there’s always more to pick up on each time. Currently, I’m actually thinking about the episode, “The Secret,” and specifically each member’s reason for voting the way they did. I think when I was twelve, I understood that Yumi had some vague distrust by that point, but I think what also surprised me that episode was that Ulrich didn’t also vote “no” to letting William into the group. But rewatching the episode now, I can kind of understand everyone’s reasons for voting the way they do.
From Ulrich and Odd’s perspectives, they’ve just seen this guy go out of his way to deactivate a bomb that would have blown up the factory, even warning them to get out of the blast radius so they won’t be killed if he fails. And this isn’t the first time he’s helped the group either, assisting Odd against the materialized Krabe in “A Bad Turn” and helping Ulrich and Yumi fight off their Xanafied classmates in “Lyoko Minus One.” From Odd and Ulrich’s perspectives, they’ve largely seen his better side lately.
Jeremie and Aelita are a bit harder to pin down, and I think that’s because the perspective they’ve seen is perhaps a bit more nuanced. On one hand, he did sneak into the factory and demand to know what they were doing, but on the other, he also went out of his way to help them deactivate the bomb, and because sometimes they can also be a bit more pragmatic, they’re probably weighing the benefits of having another ally as well. They’ve got decently good reasons to vote either way, and in Aelita’s case, she seems to prefer to see the best in people, so she’d be willing to give that chance.
Yumi, on the other hand, has gotten to see a worse side of William in this episode. While the initial crash on the skateboard is understandable, having snuck out to see a movie, it’s also fairly apparent that his pressuring Yumi for a goodnight kiss makes her uncomfortable, and the next day, he gives her crap about dodging out of it, becoming somewhat belligerent about finding her secret when she tells him she doesn’t like the constant flirting and that he needs to back off. On top of that, when he comes to the pool to get her for the Lyoko mission, he seems pretty dependent on the idea that there will be a Return to the Past, considering he loudly announces that there’s a Xana attack in front of her entire class. Given his behavior at the beginning of this episode, it’s already understandable she would vote no. I can definitely relate to her experience of wanting to just be friends with a guy, but then every conversation keeps turning into a flirtation. I can see why she might be concerned about that escalating, or at least be uncomfortable with the idea of never being able to get away from that even on a mission, where it could also effect her performance. But then add the loud announcement in front of the class on top of that, and it’s pretty clear why she thinks he’s a loose cannon. From her perspective, he’s demonstrated a recklessness with their secret, or at least an overreliance on the Return to the Past. On top of that, their confrontation with the Xanafied worker could arguably demonstrate a lack of strategy, or at least a lack of understanding of what he’s up against. It’s pretty clear why she’d vote no from any one of those reasons alone.

i’m even more confused than i was before. why did kat say that alice was gonna hate her if she did nothing wrong?? i thought maybe that it was gonna be that she lied to alice about not seeing her again in the past but then it was shown that kat actually doesn’t remember their last interaction. then i thought it could be something else but kat didn’t go back home till 17 years later. so like, what did she mean?? what was she referring too??
