You know what I totally didn't expect from the Future Redeemed DLC but am 100% all for? How genuine they made Shulk and Rex's friendship.
I expected them to have a bland companionship, maybe with a few cheap "you're a good man" thrown in. Instead we got such tender, honest interactions that made them rocket to potentially my favourite friendship of series. There's so much to suggest them being each other's closest confidants because they actually like one another, not just because of the situation they've landed in.
We see them laughing while talking with each other, exchanging parenting advice, and supporting each other's kids. Throughout little hints in dialogue it's clear they've talked about their pasts extensively, and not just for clarification, like long talks where they've regaled adventures and simple day to day life. Shulk talks vaguely about his mentor and Rex immediately knows he's talking about his brother-in-law/Dunban. Rex mentions the Queen of Agnus and Shulk knows how significant his words are, even if it's mentioned casually.
I'm so, so here for them being not just true companions, but close friends that truly enjoy being in each other's presence.
