Three Floors Up is the story of one man's secretive isolated world. It is a prefatory novelette, written by Paul White to introduce you to his books.
Enjoy.
Not recommended for anyone with a faint heart, or those aged under sixteen.
.
An excerpt
Through the dirt-encrusted glass of the window, I look down on people passing below my vantage point.
Years of neglect have seen the small panes of glass, which make the whole of the window, become dulled by black and green mould, dust, soot and unidentifiable debris combine, the glass now opaque.
All except one small pane, the one I look through. My spyhole. It has a circle of clarity, rubbed clean by an old rag I keep to hand for that purpose.
At night I do not need my spyhole. It is easier to slide the lower section of the sash window upwards. By doing so I can let the voices of those passing by into my world.
It would be futile to open the window during the day; the noise of the traffic, of the town, the aeroplanes flying overhead all combine into a cacophony. It drowns out their voices. Which is why I only raise the sash after dark.
I sit in my darkened room; a black coat, thick, quilted to ward off the icy winds from my skin.  A balaclava ski mask stops my face from being illuminated by external light.
I can see them. I can see them all, but no one sees me.
I can hear their voices, each word they speak, yet I remain silent.
They, the passers-by, are not so far away I cannot see the details of their faces, see their breath condensing in the chill air. During the evenings and throughout the night I hear them, all of them. Everything said, everything spoken aloud.
Sometimes I hear their thoughts. I hear their lost dreams muttering on the winds.
The streetlamp outside casts a pathetic yellow glow, but it illuminates enough to make my night vigils worthwhile.
You see, they often stop under that light, my light, like moths fluttering around a candle flame. While they are under my light they talk, or argue, or fight, or scream. Sometimes with mirth, sometimes in fear.
Occasionally I see them kiss. Watch wandering hands fondle beneath clothing. I watch them all.
I have seen much looking out from my small, dank, dark room. The bedroom of my rented flat; a rundown, unmaintained and, I think, illegally rented flat. It certainly does not comply with any government requirements for health, safety, or fire regulations.
But the rent is low, and nobody bothers me. Nobody bothers anyone in this part of town.
I have never seen the landlord or an agent. I have only seen one man, a man who called himself Carlos when he gave me the key all those years ago.
Other tenants come and go. Crackheads, potheads, whores, rent boys and winos. I ignore them. They ignore me.
We all ignore each other. That is the way of things here.
Life goes on, well my life goes on.
Many of theirs do not.
I have lived with death. On the floors above and below. Rotting corpses lying undiscovered for weeks or months. Locked away in small, dank, dark rooms, much like my own.
I know the smell of death, of after-death. Lingering after-death. It is no longer a stranger…

Fewer things in life are as satisfying as reading a terrific book, or three.
A great book must contain a story which absorbs you; the kind you look up from and, for that moment, wonder where you are as you re-adjust to reality.
The stories should stay with you long after you have closed the book; questions and possibilities lingering within your mind, a mist of illusion touching reality, touching your life.
Each of the stories within this three-volume Tales of Crime & Violence collection merges reality with inventiveness, and weaves threads of psychological anxiety with touching, poignant, and emotional significance, leaving you with an enduring haunting of questions about your personal beliefs, and perception of reality.
Welcome to the world of Urban Neo Noir storytelling.
Welcome to the world of Paul White.

An excerpt from, ‘Things which cannot be let go’
Taken from volume three of the Tales of Crime & Violence collection.
Why is it they are always found spread-eagled on a bed?
Limbs akimbo, tousled hair, partly covered; crumpled sheets draped over pale flesh.
Newspapers describe the scene as if the reporter was present, which, of course, they were not.
Yet these newspapers depict the blood-soaked mattress in minutiae, the exposed nakedness as almost erotic, and the wounds in the form of some horrific movie script.
Oh, then comes the speculation, which abounds with impatience and imprudence.
Guessing games and presumption.
Witnesses who heard nothing more than an indistinguishable noise at some point during the night, or was it late evening, coming from an unknown direction… or possibly it was all in a dream, an excuse to speak to a camera; the eternal search for their fifteen minutes of fame?
Perhaps.
Such is the way of the media, the way of life.
But death, there should be no supposition about death.
It is far too final.
She lay there, her hair a delta of fine brunette filaments cascading over the whiteness of a crisp linen pillowcase. Porcelain skin, almost luminescent, almost aglow, yet dead.
Cold and unyielding.
Again, I ask myself why they are always spread-eagled on a bed.
It is a question I have no answer for, not yet, and maybe I never shall.
The blood has long leached from her body, seeping into and drying upon the mattress, decaying from crimson to that dirty iron brown, a stain of a life that once was.
The wounds? I shall not describe them here. But whatever you imagine you are wrong, they are far worse, far, far worse.
Yet the sheet, the white sheet which covers her most intimate regions is clean, unstained. This was placed over her long after death, long after the blood had ceased its flow.
Someone had waited. Maybe they sat and watched as her life ebbed away.
Who covered her? some twisted mind wished to shield her from embarrassment, or indignity, or was that act to cover their frailty, their shame, their humiliation?
Guilt?
Who knows, not I, not yet.
But I shall…….

Warning to authors. Don’t fall for this.
A few points about this blog before I start today’s Rambling, as it’s now ten years old. The posts on this blog are designed to inform and entertain authors and writers. I approach each topic from an oblique perspective, weaving a little humanity and self-consciousness onto the page, along with helpful conclusions, tips, links I consider helpful, and lots of other stuff, oh, and a touch of my…

Eighty per cent of your social marketing efforts are falling into a void.
This assertion could come across as stark, but it aligns with the Pareto Principle, or the ’80/20 rule’, which suggests that approximately 80% of outcomes result from 20% of the causes. Named after economist Vilfredo Pareto, this principle emerged from his analysis of wealth distribution, revealing a consistent pattern across different domains. The essence of the Pareto Principle lies in the…

Research demanded a substantial portion of the time it took to write Within the Invisible Pentacle.
Still, it was worth every moment so I could create this collection of poignant, emotive, and entertaining stories. Ones which explore the depths of our human character, the quintessence disposition of living, and of life itself.
This is a book full of stories that will remain in your heart and mind, forever.

A short while ago I lost a friend. Jamie passed away from ‘natural causes,’ with a notation on his death certificate stating the exact cause was unknown. I had not seen Jamie in person for quite a while because I had moved overseas. We did, however, stay in contact by text, messages, and the occasional video chat, although they were erratic and not frequent. After all, we are men and, in…

Neptune and the Pollywogs is a little different to most of my other Royal Navy books, in as much as the content is factual, (well, most of it), and documented.
Although I have added a large brass fanny full of Jack's humour where possible, particularly in one of the opening sections - Theory and Genesis.
My thanks go to Andrew Alderson, one of my old shipmates, for supplying and allowing me to use many of his father's photographs in the book. To Tony Drury of the Royal Navy Research Archives, for documentation, images, and pestering me to publish this book. R (Bob) Rodgers- another old shipper- for his Crossing the Line certificate, Henry Stommel founder of the Internet Archives, and many more.
"I think recording the social aspect of Royal Naval life is extremely important. It is an area most academics overlook but one rich in knowledge and, of course, the human element."
"It is only nowadays the home records, the personal diaries, family photographs, and the odd surviving reel of private cinematic film, such as those from the First World War, are being realised as some of the most valuable historical information.
With Neptune and the Pollywogs, along with my other books regarding the Royal Navy, I hope to capture the same illusive personal and social elements, as a testimony to a way of life which is too quickly becoming lost in the passing sea mists of time."

A word, or two, in your shell-like, if I may.
I hope you liked reading the short stories I’ve posted here recently(ish). If you’ve not read them, take a little time out and enjoy them now. Many of you know I love words, not just from a writer’s viewpoint but from understanding their origins. The same goes for phrases we find ourselves using frequently. I wonder where they came from, and often ask myself how such-and-such an expression…
