productive study session in the café instead of sleeping in this afternoon. I walked my dog after and I can say I’m very satisfied. going to relax until early evening (nap or watch netflix), then workout at home, have dinner, and study the rest of the night.
there was this moment as I was driving home and it was pretty warm— the light was streaming / spilling on streets and I thought, what a nice day. I wish I have more days where I get to have normal afternoons such as this.

i don’t know why but i’m really amused by the winner of some ‘new kanji’ contest:
Tumblr media
compare with the real kanji

座 (seat/gathering), but the two 人 (person) radicals have been moved from next to each other within the 土 (earth) radical to diagonally from each other, making this “social distance(d seating/gathering)”

probably i just said it but i want to say it again:
- don’t apologise if you don’t know english.
- yes, english is the most common language on the internet but you are not forced to know it perfectly.
- your own language is beautiful.
- non-english people make a huge effort to write in English everyday on this website.
- support non-english people and don’t make them feel bad if they do not know English.
- actually support all the languages.
- spread more language diversity on Tumblr.
thank you.

I wish everyone would admit that classic literature is inherently difficult to read, and that you shouldn’t feel stupid if you don’t “get it”. Especially the dark academia/ classic lit fandoms and stuff. Like unless you have the vocabulary and pop culture knowledge of an 18th century nobleman, it’s going to be a tough read. It’ll take you longer to read; you’re not stupid if you’ve spent several months on a single book! And you don’t have to enjoy everything. It’s okay if you got bored after one chapter of Wuthering Heights, and couldn’t be bothered to read the rest. It’s okay if you want to read your favourite kids book for the 10th time instead. You’re not stupid. No piece of literature is inherently better, more “important”, more “meaningful”, or more “intellectual” than another. First and foremost, read what brings you joy.

I had a professor in college who used to start solving every problem with the same dialogue.
Proff: What’s the first step to solving any problem? Class: Don’t panic. Proff: And why is that? Class: Because we know more than we think we do.
I think about that a lot tbh. It didn’t occur to me until much later that he meant for us to apply that dialogue outside of the classroom to any problem. Because we always know more than we think we do. We are all an amalgam of random information that ends up being relevant with surprising frequency.

things i’ve heard college students say
(Question: Do you think Paul Ryan would be a good president?) Paul Ryan? A guy with two first names? Fuck no.
*first day of physics lab* “Does anyone have any interesting facts to share?” “If you go to Olive Garden and you order a block of cheese in your salad, they actually give you a block of cheese. They don’t shred it or anything.”
Yeet yeet it’s time to eat
I’m deciding whether to write my paper on nuclear physics or revenge porn.
I’ll punch myself in the face and get cancer so I don’t have to go to class tomorrow
“I have three unknowns in my equation.” “That’s a sad fact of life.”
Do you think i’ll die in intermediate swimming
What’s the most painful part about being a human cannonball? Is it that you have a lighter up your ass or the impact after launch?
“What are you majoring in?” “Mindfuckery.”
I’m going to recycle my test the moment I get it because I’d rather save the planet than force the professor to read this waste of a paper
I hate my McFucking life
Can the sky stop pissing for one second
“Our professor keeps saying he worked at Neiman Marcus but I don’t even know what it is. What the fuck is Neiman Marcus.”
“What was the best thing before sliced bread?” “…canned bread?”
go get your uber ride to hell
*at 12 am* I’m going to fail. You know what I’m doing about it? Eating a cheese stick.
We are free men in the night! And women! And free people, for those who are neither! And attack helicopters! And like furries, I guess
*while stirring soft serve in the dining hall* I have to mix it well. I cannot have oreo bits in my ice cream. That is chaos, and I do not invite chaos into my life.
I would like to crabwalk my way through my problems

Dom, what advice would you give someone who has just entered their twenties? What should i expect from this fresh chapter in my life
Biggest advice is don’t compare yourself to others. Fortify internally and give yourself permission to explore, play, and walk your own path. Eat whole foods as much as you can and stay away from heavy use of substances that kill your intuition. Believe in your competence and trust yourself more than anyone else. Work on not needing validation from toxic parents/friends/lovers. Work on not needing validation from great parents/friends/lovers. But express gratitude for validation when it comes. If you can’t love yourself yet, be empathetic at least and start smiling in the mirror. Allow yourself to make self-directed decisions without focusing on what’s right/wrong (in terms of jobs, leaving things, etc). The illusion of security can really keep you stuck at this age, sometimes you have to learn to laugh as you free-fall and see rock bottom as a blessing. Kill the inner tyrant in your head. Work towards a worldview in which all circumstances are malleable. Help as much as you can, even when it’s a little embarrassing. Ask for help even when it’s very embarrassing. Recognize the power that you have to alter your externals, and don’t beat yourself up for the times when you get kicked down by life, bc you will be Lol. Accept your face, your body, your proportions, your lips, your teeth, your laugh, your legs, your ass, and don’t make enjoyment conditional on any of these factors. Don’t wait on the perfect hairstyle or the most energetic days. Get rid of the internalized end-goal. Everything is a lifelong process. Let go of all expectations and try to give your heart what it wants. That being said, remember that limitation is the first step to manifestation. Structure allows for more freedom just as technique allows for more imagination. Start now on inner child work, yoga, and mindfulness. It’s not something to dabble in, it’s the way to knowing what you want out of life. Dream big but know why you’re dreaming. I’m rooting for you, sending you love, you will be an incredible adult!

things I wish someone had told me when I was a college freshman
it’s easy to let the answer “I can’t wait to meet other people!” out when someone asks what you’re most excited for in college. no one says that meeting people during orientation and the first week of school is one of the most draining experiences in college.
finding your best friends in the first month of college is highly improbable, but that’s ok. you don’t have to start over with new friends in college either- try and keep the ones you love deeply from high school, and the rest will fall into place.
you and your roommate just have to cohabitate- you don’t have to be best friends. it’s better if you have shared interests and do things together, but that isn’t necessary. also, set your boundaries right away. my current roommate and I have lived together for two years now, and we have never fought from implementing this.
starbucks is really expensive. try to make coffee yourself whenever you can, and even better, switch to tea. it’s better for you because it has antioxidants and doesn’t corrode your teeth.
you’re going to get sick of dorm food after a month, so you should try to stockpile snacks in your room in case there are those days you literally can’t take it anymore.
my friends teased me about my saying, “being lame is cooler than being cool,” but i stand by it. if you want to explore college life by going to parties and drinking, props to you and stay safe, but if you don’t want to do any of that, it’s ok too. sometimes for you, staying in on a friday night to relax is better and more fun than going out- hence, “cooler” than being “cool” and fun. i haven’t been to a single college party or drank alcohol, just because i’ve never been interested in that scene.
you’ll probably see everyone start to date around the one month mark. don’t feel pressured to date just because everyone else is. being single may actually be better for you, to learn about yourself and what you want in a partner. it also gives you more time to pursue your own interests.
studying in groups seems like a good idea at first until it’s 2 am in the dorm and you’ve been distracted for five hours. do what’s best for you, not what everyone else wants you to do.
bring earbuds everywhere. walking from building to building while listening to music can be both energizing and calming.
if you don’t want to talk to someone trying to recruit you into an organization or sell you something, ignore them or tell them you’re in a rush to get to class. don’t feel bad, you just don’t have the time or mental space for them.
treat all strangers as if you’ll never see them again to help yourself feel less awkward. retail workers have probably seen worse things at their checkout station. your dress probably isn’t that ugly. it’s ten times easier to not care what others think of you than to care constantly.
being angry about everything and complaining all the time is the best way to make people dislike you as a person. no one really cares if you think this professor is unfair or if the TA graded something wrong. everyone has their own lives. take some time to be angry about something, but then always take steps to fix what happened or cope with the aftermath. the friends you confide in will find it irritating if you don’t take their advice.
you will see annoying people less, but they will be ten times more annoying. Sorry
college should not be a fight against other people- if it is, you’re not learning. i know for premed, stem, and business, it can feel like you’re always competing, but college should be about competing against yourself to become a better person. you want to learn, you want to experience life for yourself, not anyone else.

Hey! What are some of your tips for studying in the days you really cannot focus?
hi there friend! hmm, that’s a good question! here are some suggestions:
remember to drink water and eat a snack. a lot of the time, if you’re feeling badly mentally, it will also manifest in your body in the form of fatigue. likewise, if you’re not feeling one hundred percent physically, you’ll start to lose focus. make sure you’re not hungry or thirsty before a study sesh so that you aren’t distracted by how icky you feel the whole time.
if naps work for you, take a power nap before you start. i can’t nap (i just can’t sleep during the day but i sleep like the dead at night) but if napping helps you, maybe a little sleep will help you feel a little less tired.
go somewhere where you can study well and effectively. for me this is the law library, which is almost deafeningly silent, but it might be a coffee shop or a room in your house for you. make sure you have a space clear from clutter (when things are messy, i always get anxiety) and try to get some natural light in your room. sunlight honestly can solve anything for me lol
depending on if you can study with music, try a classical music playlist (i have made a lot of these) or some playlists on spotify of rain sounds. those really soothe me and help me feel less anxious.
i know a lot of people say you should try getting the hardest things out of the way first, but honestly, i do it the opposite way around so that i feel like i’ve done something and i can build momentum to get to harder subjects i need to study. for example, i’ll send some emails or submit an easy assignment before studying for a difficult test. i write these accomplishments down in a list (you’ve probably seen these lists pretty often during the spring) and that serves as a tangible reminder that i did something that day, be it for myself or for school/work.
i don’t like studying with friends because they can be distracting, so i tend to do things by myself. but if friends or studymates can help you focus and retain info, especially if it’s near test day, you should spend some time (not all the time) with them to solidify information.
finally, if you can’t study at all, do something else you consider productive or important to you. practicing piano and exercising really helps me reset my brain and screw my head on in a way that is more conducive to studying. you shouldn’t be studying when you feel really anxious or nervous; you’ll never be able to retain information like that. some other things you can do to reset your brain might be journaling (one of my best friends does this every day after school to get out all her emotion), cooking or baking something fast, cleaning up your room or house, reading, doing a different assignment from another class, taking a shower or bath, doing some exercise, or playing a musical instrument. however, don’t go on netflix, youtube, or any social media- it’ll never end and you’ll never be focused if you spend time online.
hope that helps!! feel free to ask me anything else about studying!
