18. Magneto
struggled with this design, but once I narrowed the scope to an Older Mags, I was able to narrow it down to a more regal, comfortable look.
Something warm, along with a cane and some hidden orthopedics in his boots.

currently thinking about the fact that cisco and caitlin basically didn't have real jobs for almost a decade. they spent all day at S.T.A.R labs chatting to barry on comms, making maguffins and administering medical treatment at extremely unreliable intervals with no consistently defined job role.
their best friend is essentially their boss??? barry owns the lab and he presumably pays them to be there, since they don't have any other jobs (bar caitlin's brief stints as an employee at mercury labs/bartender/amunet's lackey). but what is he paying them to do?? obviously they're always saving the world and shit but what the hell were they doing the rest of the time? just hanging out at the lab, which presumably has no funding because like. the last time they did a big experiment they blew up half the city?? i know a lot of office jobs are kind of nothingy and people claim to be able to do all their work in like 2 hours (god i wish i had that kind of job lmao) but seriously it's kinda insane that barry was like "hey do you guys wanna just. hang out here all day and occasionally make gadgets and patch me up whenever i get my ass kicked and i'll keep paying you your normal salary"

I call both Scott and Ororo “pragmatic” but Ororo’s “pragmatism” is like “I can recognize the value of a lot of different approaches and support people who are working towards my goals even if their methods are different because anything that works helps” while Scott’s “pragmatism” is more like “I have analyzed the scenario and come up with the most effective way to respond and I am going to force everyone to comply with this plan so that the maximum number of people are working on the maximally effective plan for maximal overall effectiveness.”

Do you equate cyclops with mutant resistance? Is he like the poster person for challenging the status quo?
I mean, the poster person is Magneto. Magneto is Mr. Overthrow the Status Quo to Build a Better World for Mutants. That’s his whole shtick.
Scott is a lot more complicated. For a long time, he was very much the quintessential X-Men, dedicated to duty and Xavier’s dream. Whether or not Xavier’s vision counts as mutant resistance depends a lot on both the writer and the reader, as what actually the X-Men are trying to achieve changes a lot and how radical of a stance you think that is depends heavily on your own political ideas and commitments.
Around 2010 with Utopia and then Schism, they started making Scott a little more radical, and then 2016’s Uncanny X-Men really leaned into the resistance leader idea, as he was hated by all the other X-Men but was gonna lead a mutant revolution. Krakoa kind of upended all of that, since Krakoa era is really weird in that it largely goes against Xavier’s dream and what the X-Men were founded for, so it’s hard to pin any Krakoa era character down in the existing like Xavier to Magneto spectrum.
So whether or not someone reads Scott as revolutionary or as a figure of mutant resistance is gonna depend heavily on what comics they prioritize. I started reading comics in 2015, so Bendis’s revolutionary Scott was pretty key in forming my opinion of the character. But people whose foundational comics were like the late 70s team are going to think of him as much more of a stick in the mud rule-bound type than a resistance figure.
As like a person, Scott is pretty inflexible and somewhat ruthless when it comes to doing what he thinks is right. This means that he’s devoted to the rules and fighting for mutant rights the “right” way and then he can switch and be devoted to resistance and taking far more drastic action, because the devotion is constant even as different writers shift his political allegiances around. (This is in contrast to someone like Ororo, who is always pretty flexible with her rules imo, or someone like Betsy, who’s often more wrapped up in her own missions than in a larger political agenda.)
