Today I'm intrigued about what people thought happened to Rosalie and Carlisle.

Jasper was at war, Alice was in an asylum, Edward was in a hospital during a pandemic. Them never coming home wouldn't be that weird (and Alice's father and step-mother claimed she was dead anyway). Even Emmett had gone out into the woods, things happen. Fatal encounters with wildlife, getting lost, hunting accidents. Even Esme; alone in a new place, lost a baby, jumped off a cliff. Would anyone really notice her body was missing? Who was going to claim it?

But Rosalie and Carlisle are different. Rosalie was about to marry into a prominent family and then she disappears, and then the friends of her fiancé die (or disappear? Did Rosalie hide the bodies?) and then the fiancé himself is killed/disappears. She vanished one night walking home from a friend's house and no body was ever found. That's weird. Did people think she was the first victim of a serial killer? Did they think she was a witness or involved in some shady stuff that Royce and his friends did that came back to haunt them? Did anyone ever suspect that Royce and his friends were responsible for her disappearance or is she forever lumped in with them as victims of the Rochester Killer?

And with Carlisle, sure, dying on a vampire raid in the context of a time and place where vampire raids were a thing wouldn't be 'weird,' but his father purposefully burned the bodies of vampire victims. Carlisle's body was never found. Did Pastor Cullen try to cover that up? Burn some other body and claim it was Carlisle's? Bury an empty coffin in the churchyard so no one would have to live with the idea that his son stalked the night as a blood-sucking monster? Or did everyone know his body was never found and he was probably out there, transformed into one of the monsters he and his father had fought? Were his father and surviving friends spending terrified, sleepless nights worrying undead Carlisle would make an appearance?

I love to think that there are great, exaggerated family legends about Uncle Emmett in the McCarty family. That they're like oh yeah he went out hunting one day and never came back, but his brothers went looking for him and found some ripped clothing next to the carcass of the biggest bear they'd ever seen. A monster. He fought that thing to the death! The bear might have gotten him, but the bear died too. It was a draw, so it means he never lost a fight. He was badass. And 7ft tall. Built of solid muscle. All the girls loved him. He was your great-grandma's favorite. etc, etc.

One year Rosalie and Emmett show up at a McCarty family reunion. There are so many cousins and aunts and uncles no one really questions it, and they're listening to these stories and Emmett's just loving every second of it; they remember him and he's become this family legend, a tall tale, their very own Paul Bunyan or whatever

Meanwhile Rosalie is muttering in the back, "I'm happy for Emmett and all, but I killed that bear."

Tbh I totally agree with this. I think Carlisle’s thoughts were more like "Edward is lonely and Rosalie and him are both in pain, maybe they can heal together eventually but it’s their choice" instead of "rape victim bride for my son", it was probably always an afterthought and not his main motivation of saving her.

Edward’s audacity makes me insane. “Yeah my dad found a young woman who was raped to death and turned her in hopes of her being my girlfriend” bro what?? Legitimately bonkers take. Carlisle was motivated by his usual compassion and goodness etc, there wasnt a secret plot to matchmake… i cant with this kid. Being permanently 17 makes u bonkers.

G actually has an endlessly long meta about this! The tl;dr is that neither of us thinks Edward is lying when he tells us Carlisle lowkey hoped he and Rosalie would get together. The actual quote (from chapter 18 of Twilight) is:

“Carlisle brought Rosalie to our family next. I didn't realize till much later that he was hoping she would be to me what Esme was to him — he was careful with his thoughts around me.”

Sure, sounds reasonable enough. Where it often gets distorted is that fandom/fanon likes to run with the worst-faith interpretation: the idea that Carlisle changed Rosalie with the sole and explicit intention of creating a mate for Edward. There's nothing to suggest this in the text (though it's not explicitly refuted, either, so up to some interpretation.) What Carlisle actually says during Rosalie's change in the Eclipse flashback, when he explains why he saved her, is "It was too much — too horrible, too much waste" and "I couldn't leave her," presumably referring to the tragedy of letting Rosalie die at such a young age. Note that he also states it will be up to vampire!Rosalie whether she wants to stay with the Cullens or leave.

I (G) have always interpreted that to mean he made a spur-of-the-moment choice to save her, and it only occurred to him later that "hey, she's around Edward's age, maybe they'll hit it off" (lol.) Still a liiiiittle gross considering how traumatized and upset she was, but not the mustache-twirling "mwahaha, I will abduct this rape survivor as Sexual Object For Son" motivations I often see imagined on tumblr.

tl;dr we'd describe it less as "a secret plot to matchmake" and more as "a secret (and slightly inappropriate) hope that his kids might fall in love." But we have no reason to doubt Edward's interpretation of Carlisle's thoughts here.
