Why is the “historical realism” thing always rape?
A couple weeks ago The Mary Sue announced they weren’t going to cover “Game of Thrones” any more after yet another female character being brutally raped. The thread is still being invaded by trolls periodically, and there are more than 12,000 comments on the article, which is a site record and probably an internet record. (12K comments because a single website said “We’re not going to recap or promote this show any more.” Baffling.)
Tons of trolls have thrown out the “but THINGS WERE JUST LIKE THAT BACK THEN!” argument ad nauseum. Which is total bullshit, of course. Now with the season finale of “Outlander” (which, spoiler, also included rape) the trolls are coming back.
I just want to ask, why is it whenever producers/directors/writers want to demonstrate “gritty historic realism” it’s ALWAYS RAPE? It’s always sexual violence toward women/girls.
You know what would be gritty historic realism? Dysentery. GoT has battles and armies marching all over the place. You want to show “what things were like back then”? Why aren’t we seeing 500 guys by the side of a road puking and shitting their guts out from drinking contaminated water while the rest of the army straggles along trying to keep going? Or a village getting wiped out by cholera? Or typhus, polio or plague epidemics?
You want to show what it was like back then for women? Show a woman dying of sepsis from an infection she caught while giving birth. Show a woman coping with ruptured ovarian cysts with nobody know what it is. Breast cancer that the audience will recognize immediately but the characters think is some mark of the devil or some shit.
But no, it’s always rape. And we all know why that is. Because these douchecanoes that do this, though they’ll deny it, think rape is sexy. Because they can’t make a modern set story where women get raped in every god damned episode without being called monsters. So they use “but but historical realism!” to cover their sexism (see “Mad Men”) and misogyny. Then they tell us “That’s just how it was back then!” with the clear implication “Shut the fuck up bitch, because that could be you  and you should be thanking me that it’s not.”

you know what trope i just go maximum apeshit for every goddamn time?
when a character has to improvise a weapon under urgent circumstances.
im talking characters in handcuffs using them to garrote enemies
characters swinging objects that are WILDLY un-aerodynamic (a table, a a garden gate.)
or throwing objects that are wildly un-damaging (an inflatable chair, a bunch of flowers)
throwing something soft and light over someones head as a brief distraction
using the ENVIRONMENT against their adversary (pulling a rug from under them, slamming a door in their face)
using weapons that are broken or not working properly, or using them the ‘incorrect’ way (using an empty gun as a bludgeon, Elizabeth Swann pulling that sword off the wall but it still being attached to the wall display)
swordfights using anything BUT swords
people macgyvering wildly ‘low-tech’ improvised contraptions to defeat massively high-tech and well organised attacks
loading a blunderbuss or shotgun with something commonplace and either not-at-all dangerous or surprisingly lethal (sand, cutlery, buttons)
i love this trope so much

INTRIGUING. When there's a taglist please add me, this sounds like everything I want in a book 🥰 I'm doing Nano too (again) this year! I'm gonna be writing an urban fantasy too, with a hint of sci fi maybe?? It's called Finding Fate and I cannot waitttt to start work on it again.
Good luck to everyone doing Nano! May the odds be ever in our favour 🤞🤞🤞
NaNoWriMo Project
It's almost the most wonderful painful time of the year!
I for one am SO HYPED.
This year I'm writing an urban fantasy which is tentatively titled In The Headlights, featuring liminal spaces, disaster gays, monster hunters, a lot of neon, and vampire deer.
Probably gonna do a wip intro for it the week before November ends, plus some character intros, so if you are interested I will definitely have a tag list! Since it's my nano project I'll likely be posting about it a little more thank I do work other projects so stay tuned!!!

Open up a music playlist of yours and put it on shuffle. Write in the tags which music you got + which OC it reminds you the most about!
(If you don’t get a good song, you can try as many times as you want until you find one that fits)

Last Line Tag
I was tagged a millennia ago by @quirky-squid and then by @timefirewrites (sorry it took me so long to get round to this!) As I’m taking part in campwrimo this year, this is from my camp project, ‘Songbird’. A WIP intro may follow.
“You mustn't be the first to catch his eye. The first girl’s the fool, the second the poison. Once he knows the second girl is out of his reach, once he knows he can’t have them, their fate is all but sealed. Wait until he has his queen. That’s the key.”

Young Prince: The Contest
The Contest Of Kings- Rules
The list of rules was a lot shorter than I thought it would be. It looked, to the best of my recollection, something like this:
1. No communication except through telegram, or through the official messengers given to you by the King
2. No use, or possession, of any kind of firearm
3. The allocated sum of £500,000 must only be used for official business relating to the ruling of the heir’s designated kingdom, and not for personal gain
4. All conflicts between heirs will be permitted only if the heirs in question fight one-on-one with no use of troops. Troops will only be permitted use for other matters or for conflicts with non-heirs
5. Forfeits must be witnessed by the heir’s Watcher and at least one competing heir
6. Any breaking of the above rules will result in permanent and immediate expulsion from the Contest of Kings.

“There had been four King Games- or, by their official name, Contest of Kings- since the beginning of Thisben.
The story of the first King Games was an easy one to recall, a memory strengthened every time we had begged Marek to tell it.
The First King, the king that established Thisben, had seven children. Two daughters, five sons. As he grew old, he decided he needed a clear way to decide the succession of his throne to a more able heir than his oldest child, a peace-loving son who was in every way his father’s opposite. The Contest of Kings had been the solution- a game to entertain the cruel king and let the ablest heir gain the throne their birthright would have denied them.
As the first King grew older every day, his children fought each other for the throne until only one remained. The specifics of the first Contest have been more or less lost, but three more were called for. No heir had died since the end of the second Contest, but the tradition was always mentioned with a solemnity that spoke of its danger. There hadn’t been a Contest for almost two hundred years. We’d thought they were ancient history.”
WIP Intro: Young Prince
Genre: Action/ Adventure, Non-magical Fantasy, could also be classed as Historical Fiction
Category: Young Adult
Status: Third Draft
Setting: Thisben
Main Character: Connor Ravenson
Narrative: 1st Person
Synopsis:
Connor is a Ravenson, one the Kingdom’s seven princes. He’s the second youngest, far down the line of succession. He never thinks he stands a chance at ruling- until the day Obi goes missing. Connor comes face to face with the Reaper, Thisben’s notorious assassin. The dangerous stranger has plans for him, and shortly after their meeting, the King announces something that turns Connor’s life upside down.
The Contest Of Kings, an ancient and mysterious tournament that hasn’t been held in hundreds of years, pits the princes against one another as they rule over their own lands, fighting to be named the King’s sole heir. Alliances aee forged. Trust is tested.
The Reaper follows Connor’s every move as his Watcher, chosen specifically to report Connor’s progress back to the King. And he seems to know more than he is letting on…
