Book recommendations: Week 16
Book 16
Tainted by Julie Kenner
Tumblr media
Lily Carlyle hasn’t always made the best choices in life. All she’s had room to think about was survival—that is until her little sister becomes the victim of a brutalisation and survival is no longer Lily’s biggest driver in life. Vengeance is.
The vengeance finally kills her, but that’s when she has to make an even bigger choice. Will she take the second chance that’s offered? Lily is told that she can earn her way into heaven, to atone for her sins in life, by becoming an assassin for the forces of good.
Lily is then thrown into the life and body of Alice Purdue, as she dives head first into a world full of demons, angels and the underworld. Soon enough she finds out there’s more to the deal she made, than she was told and suddenly everything is uncertain.
It had been a while since I had picked up a Julie Kenner book. I’ve read quite a few as a teenager, but for some reason none for the last decade or so. Then this book brought me back. Julie’s books are fast-paced, full of humour and easy to read. This one is also a little dark and Lily isn’t an easy-going fun, loving character. Yet you cannot help but root for her. Now Julie did use some cliche’s in this book but if you can look past those, you’ll really enjoy it.

I probably put way too much thought into it but I do enjoy making a more in depth story rather than winging it. I like to actually think about the worldbuilding, make sure things actually connect and make sense. I am a big history nerd and I feel like it's the closest I can get to writing my own history.

Book Recommendations: Week 15
Book 15
The Lifeguard by Richie Tankersley Cusick (point Horror)
Tumblr media
Now this book is a bit different—an odd duck in this particular list, as it's for a entirely different target audience. BUT I first read it as a kid and I LOVED it. So every few years I pick it back up and read it again—purely nostalgic because the twists and turns aren’t shocking anymore. This was the book that made me realise how amazing thrillers could be and my introduction to the point horror series.  I honestly wish that series would’ve gotten more traction in the Netherlands at the time.
The story follows Kelsey Tanner who goes on holiday with her mom to the beach house of her mother’s new boyfriend Eric. There she’ll be spending time with his kids and their friends.
At their arrival on the island, Eric informs them that his youngest, 13 year old Beth, is missing. Her belongings were found at a cove on the beach but there’s not sign of the girl herself.
Kelsey tries to make the most of her summer at the beach, getting to know Eric’s other kids Justin and Neal and their friends Skip and Donna. Neal, Justin and Skip all work as lifeguards.
But just as people are accepting that Beth drowned, Kelsey finds a note in Beth’s room; ‘I think someone is going to kill me’. Kelsey is starting to believe that there’s more to Beth’s disappearance but is hesitant to tell anyone. Soon after strange things start happening to Kelsey that scare her further.
The idyllic island is quickly proving itself to be far from the paradise Kelsey had hoped to find.
The story is a fun read. Eerie, fast-paced and even managed to add a little romance to all the suspense. Since Kelsey is new to the area, it’s easy to understand that she’s having trouble trusting anyone. And that anyone can be a suspect.
