I don’t usually drink this stuff, but black tea is the only thing that’s kept me functioning this week. 10/10 would recommend—especially if you’re slightly sick and completely exhausted + sore (mentally and physically), like me.

(of course, the lighting had to glare on the counter and ruin my picture smh)

I don’t think there is a scent in this world I love more than than the must of yellowed pages in old books. Well, maybe rich vanilla. I’d die for that too. But books… *sighs*

I’m currently completely swamped and, for no particular reason whatsoever, internally angry with the entire world. Literally everyone. Remind me again, what exactly have they done to me to deserve this? Wait. Amy stole Laurie from Jo. Right. That’s why.

I suppose this is what happens to people who become overly enveloped in stories and don’t get their way at the end. Should’ve learned my lesson with Tessa, Will, and Jem… But no—I’m still as naive as ever. Oh well. (And, for the record, I’m team Will. Don’t try to convince me otherwise.)

currently reading: The Call of the Wild by Jack London

currently listening to: “Walk” by Kwabs

09. 02. 20.

I was actually productive these past two days. Wow.

Sooo… Everyone on my student council committee is like canceling on me, so I’m basically planning and preparing the whole Valentine’s Day dance, representing the entire council at the next school board meeting (yikes), and running the Crush Soda project because everything was a mess until someone (me) started managing the people who had no clue what they were doing (smh). So that’s fun.

edit: Okay, not gonna lie, I’m secretly enjoying being able to unleash the perfectionistic side of me and do everything exactly how I want to do it.

But hey, I’m somehow managing to work on all of those things on top of my homework, learning Spanish, preparing for the upcoming play, learning my five million pieces for my five million different choirs, wasting time watching bestdressed (okay, that’s not a waste of time), etc.

You know what? Looking at that list, I feel kinda accomplished. Man.

31. 01. 20.

It’s been a busy week…

And that’s kind of why I didn’t register for high school or pick my classes until fifteen minutes before I had to hand in my forms. Bad idea. Oops.

As long as everything works out and there’s room for me, though, I will be taking the following classes this coming freshman year—starting in August:

CORE CURRICULUM

  • English I H
  • Biology H
  • Geometry H
  • OTT
  • Block P.E. (I’ve been promised scuba diving, ice skating, rock climbing, etc. ???)
  • Driver’s Ed
  • Human Geography H AP

ELECTIVES

  • Spanish I or II (depending on if I can test out)
  • Art I
  • Interior Design

Okay, update…

So… I changed my classes because I realized how much I’m going to miss choir—it’s not going to help my GPA since the class I’m swapping it out for doesn’t have an honors class either, but whatever.

Here’s the new schedule…

over the summer:

  • Orientation To Technology a.k.a. OTT

regular semester classes:

  • English I H
  • Biology H
  • Geometry H
  • P.E.
  • Spanish
  • Choir (auditions for the different tiers are coming up!!)
  • Human Geography H AP
  • Driver’s Ed (I’m getting my permit around this time next year?! What?!?)

07. 02. 20.

Today was… frustrating… to put it lightly.

✰✰✰

Plenty of silly mistakes, difficult people, piles of assignments, and just a lot of stress overall. Gonna blow off some steam with my friends later tonight on the court—spiking the heck out of the volleyball usually does the trick. (10/10 would recommend for anyone else who would like to strangle their math teacher but can’t.)

02. 02. 20.

Okay, we all have to admit that today’s date looks pretty cool. I mean, 2020 backwards then forwards…

Anyway. Sorry that I’ve been inconsistent this week. My lighting sucks—I blame it on the January gloom, but I figured today would be my best shot since it’s less cloudy than it has been the past few days. edit: I just realized what I said… no pun intended lol.

w e e k e n d  a g e n d a :

household cleaning - I’m so busy during the week that, quite frankly, I don’t have time to put everything away properly. Then, when Saturday rolls around, and I actually spend time in my room for purposes other than sleep, I realize what it looks like… and my (not diagnosed) OCD takes over lol.

create study tools - I have another science test (yay) towards the beginning of next week, so I’m currently making this fifty-some card Quizlet (I learn through repetition) on electricity, magnetism, and electromagnetism. Normally, I make my own notes or paper flashcards since writing stuff down and reorganizing information help me remember it, but my hand would’ve died half-way through, considering all the stuff I need to study… EDIT: it’s ninety cards now xD. If you’re interested, click here for the link.

edit + publish a newspaper edition - Now that I’ve finally received all the articles, I can’t put this off any longer. I always dread the first day of each month because it takes me up to four and a half hours to rewrite, reformat, and upload everything to my website before I can publish. So yeah… Also, I was technically supposed to have it done yesterday, but I wasn’t feeling well, so I told myself it was okay if it came out a day later. No one reads it right away, anyway. It’s a school newspaper completely run by me, a fourteen-year-old, after all. It’s not that official.

duolingo - Last weekend, my days blended together, and I lost my streak… I thought I had done Duolingo on Saturday, but it turned out that I hadn’t, and forty-some days went down the drain, and I just *gets mad at herself all over again*. Love that for me. (still recovering)

plan out classes - I sat down for literally almost four hours yesterday, looked over all my options and requirements, and crafted a theoretical class schedule for my entire high school career. Let’s just hope my counselor approves…

recharge & unwind - I’m very physically tired and sore from all the hunching over I’ve done lately, so I need to take a bath while listening to some Einaudi. Maybe I’ll finish my book. Maybe not. I don’t have time for that these days…

extracurricular responsibilities - I planned an entire event for Student Council and did my vocal SmartMusic lessons yesterday, so I feel pretty accomplished as far as that goes. I should probably review my script for the play, though…

family time - Since I spend like zero time with my family during the week, I owe them some over the weekend. After a bit of arguing on my siblings’ part, we decided to watch Thor: The Dark World and Doolittle (the latter is currently in theaters). At the request of the guys in our house, we plan on tuning in to the SuperBowl later today *eyeroll* (I’m just here for the food, if I’m being completely honest). Another interesting tidbit of useless information: On our way home from a nice family breakfast, my sister declared that we’re baking a cinnamon football-shaped cake with red (yes, red—in honor of Valentine’s Day) fondant. I’m interested to see how that goes…

Better get back to work now… I’m procrastinating again.

realize how messed up our world is when you find out that people talk about you behind your back and say “i would date her if she was dumber.” don’t succumb to it. they’re jealous and intimidated by the fact that they’re not better than you. just reply: “well, i would date you, too—if you weren’t an asshole.”

26. 01. 20.

Why does registering for high school sound so much easier than it is? Ughhh…

Like seriously… the entire system involving clubs, extracurriculars, credits, zero hour, summer classes, honors, ap, dual-credit, and gpa is so messed up and complicated and I– *sighs*

✰ ✰ ✰

Today, I met up with one of my sophomore friends at the local cafe so someone could actually explain everything to me, and thank God things are making more sense now. But still…

PICKING CLASSES IS IMPOSSIBLE. I have hundreds of options. Literally. Not to mention, it feels like my entire future depends on what classes I pick freshman year.

Like… I need to pick my core curriculum classes properly this year so I can take the rest of them at the right time throughout the next few years—that way, I can meet all my high school graduation requirements. On top of that, my electives + extra classes depend on which college I want to go to (all of them have different requirements), which depends on what career direction I want to go in, which depends on what job I want, which depends on my interests + job availability/job security/salary/location/a bunch of other factors. So basically, in order to be able to fill in the handful of blanks on the other side of this page, I need my entire future planned out… Which is a lot to ask from a fourteen-year-old. A lot.

- Duolingo (hit my forty-day streak yesterday!)

- memorize scene four of my play (as if)

- jump on The Office bandwagon (my friend has been begging me for weeks smh lol, and considering I finished Sherlock and Unbelievable, it’s about time I find a new series) edit: I hate it. Sorry not sorry lmao.

- do nothing

I know, I know… I shouldn’t be on Tumblr with everything that I have to do, but…

current study playlist:

Divenire album by Ludovico Einaudi

(soothing piano compositions perfect for the background whenever you need to focus deeply. absolutely gorgeous.)

Lindsey Stirling album by Lindsey Stirling

(upbeat and intense—exactly what you need to solve that last math problem, write that action scene, or power through that defining rebuttal. a little dubstep goes a long way…)

✰ school newspaper meeting (I’m the president, so I don’t have to do anything except manage my writers until it’s time to edit and put together the 5894089490 articles for four hours over the weekend *sigh*)

✰ drama practice (we don’t really do any memorizing in those two hours, but oh well)

20. 01. 20.

Sometimes I feel like I buy stuff and then just look at it because I’m too afraid I’ll use it all up or break it. Just me?

(There’s this German proverb my mom says all the time: “Man ehrt nur durch Gebrauch”, which roughly translates to “You honor only through use”, and I think it’s great except for the fact that I technically “use” it by taking pictures for Tumblr??)

Anyway…

t o d a y ’ s  a g e n d a :

- family breakfast (I’m trying to spend more time with them instead of holing up in my room with my laptop 24/7)

- shower & self-care (very overdue, may I add)

- Duolingo (starting the week off strong at 150+ xp)

- and now I’m updating my Tumblr even though I should be finishing up Spanish homework (even though it’s not due until Wednesday lol)

- okay, so I did get around to doing the Spanish homework and SmartMusic after all…

This blog is a transfer from my old studyblr https://let-us-be-study-buddies.tumblr.com/ (that one is no longer active—this one will be). I used to follow studyblrs from my old main https://lillyaliyah.tumblr.com/ (also no longer active).

Why did I move?

I wanted to separate my studyblr so my followers would only be studyblrs and that the blogs I follow would only be studyblrs, but that was pretty much impossible because my studyblr was my secondary blog (and I couldn’t make it my main). That meant I had to create a whole new account and manually (ughhh) repost all of my favorite posts to this new (main and active!) blog.

Is anything changing?

Nope. Same content as always. :)

19. 01. 20.

( c r e a t i v e )  w r i t i n g  a d v i c e

No, I haven’t published a book… No, I’m not some world-renowned author… But I have been reading their writing and coming up with my own for as long as I can remember, so I do know a thing or two about it. Here’s some tough love for all my fellow writers out there:

- distractions: This one is pretty self-explanatory, but you would be surprised how many people need this talk *cough* procrastinators *cough*. Don’t sit there and think of all the millions of things you could be doing. Don’t keep Tumblr open (it’s tempting, I know), don’t text a friend on the side, and don’t tell yourself you’ll start once you finish that last episode of Friends. No. Close all your tabs. Shut everything out. You have to start now—no distractions. If you keep thinking of things to do, before you know it, half your day is over and then you’re like, “Welp. I guess I’ll have to start tomorrow ‘cause my schedule is all messed up now” (does anyone else do that?). The harsh reality is: if you never take the first step, you’ll never finish the journey. So start. On that note…

YOU’RE OVER-THINKING IT.

- the “new” idea: Look, every idea has already been written before (in some form)… Heartbreakers? Yup. Identity crises? Mhm. Magic? Well, duh! So don’t get too wrapped up in coming up with a ground-breaking “new” idea so your story will “stand out”. What makes well-written stories “different” is the writer’s ability to take something we all know and turn it into something we don’t. Do that.

- “But I need to plan”, “I need to brainstorm”, etc etc etc. *sighs* You need to know where to draw the line. Yes, you need a vague idea what and who you want to write about, but you don’t need it perfectly planned out scene-by-scene; I spent years obsessing over the tiniest details when planning my WIP, and I regret every minute of it—I wasted so much time on that only to change those specifics on a whim when I actually (finally) got around to writing. My English teacher always says, “Your character writes the story. So let it. You only tell it,” and I find that to be immensely true. I changed my character’s name, her background, her friends, her personality—like everything when I wrote my first draft because well, turns out she knew better than I did when it came to the path of her story. So don’t worry about those things beforehand. I promise they will develop. Just start. Some of the best ideas are spontaneous anyway! If you need to, you can call your MC “xyz” (literally) until you get to the moment in the story where you suddenly think of a fitting name. I mean, in the end, there’s this wonderful thing called “editing” that will save your ass. You’re welcome. That leads me on to my next point…

- perfectionism: I had to learn this lesson the hard way. Do not go into writing thinking you will only have one draft and that you will work on that draft until it is perfect. Honey, no. That will make your project stretch out so long that you won’t be able to see the end of it, which is very intimidating and unmotivating. Plow through it in a short amount of time, and finish your first draft. Don’t rewrite a page or a whole scene; don’t sit there until the sentence is just right; don’t delete your whole beginning if it doesn’t fit with the story and start all over again. All that revising will slow you down to the point where it seems like you’ll never finish, so just write. The end result will suck. But it will feel so good to know that you finished something. Then you can start your next draft and edit (not just proofread and copy-edit, but content edit) to your little heart’s content. Now, on to…

ACTUALLY FINISHING.

- deadlines: Even if you’re just curled up on the couch with a coffee by yourself and “casually” writing a story… You. Need. A. Deadline. I don’t care if you’ll never publish it. I don’t care if you’re writing for yourself rather than other people. You need to put some sort of pressure on you, ‘cause if you don’t, you’ll slack off, and you probably won’t ever finish it. Oh, and when I say deadlines, I don’t mean “deadlines”. Be hard on yourself—don’t give yourself too much time. Make a deadline for your first draft (remember, you don’t have to include all the scenes and details you want in the end product!), and meet it. Once you’ve done that, set a deadline for your second draft. Meet it. And do it again and again until you have the story you want. You can always set another deadline. Just make sure it means something—write it down, make someone hold you accountable for it, and reward yourself when you meet it! Give yourself a stern talking-to if you don’t. Keep in mind, it’s all about the little steps.

If you don’t remember anything from this post, at least remember this:

Just start. The rest happens on its own—but only if you let it.

( feel free to add tips in the comments :)
