In Spain we have the tradition on Valentine's day of sharing on Twitter this meme:
Tumblr media
In the meme Samwise Gamgee from Lord of the Rings asks "Mr Frodo, wait for me" while walking around the Shire. The bottom text reads "Sam Walks Slowly". This is funny because in Spain we wish each other a happy "San Valentín" which read the same as "Sam Va Lentin", "Sam Walks Slowly".
So I wish to all my Tumblr followers a very slow day, following the ones you love!

Fëanor, turning from "I will do anything for my children not to feel as alone and abandoned as I did" to "you cannot stay with your mother no matter how much you want to, this is my house and my rules", makes me sad

so interested in whatever is going on between Gil-galad, Galadriel, Elrond and Celebrimbor at the start of the Second Age. It’s not Found Family because they’re all already family, objectively, but all only like second cousins on average and probably none of them have spent any measurable time together outside the decades-long apocalypse that was the War of Wrath and immediate preceding hellish years. How much do any of them even like each other? But also, they’re all the family they each have left (though Galadriel and Celeborn are already working on it 😉), and all for various reasons are staying in Middle Earth rather than sailing West (was Celebrimbor pardoned? we just don’t know!). They all had completely different perspectives of every major event in the last 600 years. They’re trying to build a country together more or less from scratch, full of people who also waver between “I fucking hate you for your countless crimes against me and my people” and “we’ve been through hell together and I’d die for you”, sometimes several times over the course of a single staff meeting.
Also I’m convinced the loadbearing dynamic is,
Gil-galad, Celebrimbor, & Galadriel: [3 hands clasped in a circle.meme] Elrond is essentially a baby and we’re going to look after him if it kills us (and/or any bystanders)
Celebrimbor & Galadriel: [2 clasped hands.meme] Gil-galad and Elrond are both children and it’s up to us to look out for them
Galadriel: Thank goodness I am here to guide and care for my baby cousins, even if I must do it alone (except for my dear husband)
Elrond, under his breath: Do none of you listen when I explain that I grew to adulthood at a mostly Edainic pace, and choosing to be an elf has not in fact reversed that (oh valar I miss Elros so much)
Círdan, sipping wine across the room: I can’t wait to one day tell Finwë about babysitting four of his (great-, etc) grandchildren at once. He’s going to love it.

the reason the Union of Maedhros almost worked is that every grandchild of Finwë acknowledges on some deep, babysitting-while-our-parents-squabble level that Maedhros is in charge if no adultier adults are present

Elrond caring for every single one of Elros’s descendants like they were his nieces and nephews, zero generations removed.
Except for the ones he fostered who were his sons or daughters.
The ones he never met? Well, he’s putting together some very important records for posterity. So obviously he needs as much up to date information on what’s going on in Numenor as he can get, up to and including gossip about the royal family going around fishing towns.
Elrond compiling histories of the men of Numenor like family scrapbooks, and worrying about kids who only vaguely know he exists. Agonizing over sending birthday presents that they’ll actually like (this is very hit or miss, and he defaults to books). Kings and queens of Numenor who just think the elves send very odd diplomatic gifts, and to most of the nobility for some reason.
Accidentally becoming a lore master because people don’t understand what’s going on and assume he wants that level of intelligence about every culture on middle earth, and he writes it all down because he DOES love learning and not want knowledge to be lost.
Killing it as a herald because what heralds mostly do in times of peace, besides work as ambassadors, is look after geneologies and the symbols of different houses, and he has so much practice, because he doesn’t want to LOSE a niece!
The King’s Men’s specific rejection of elves absolutely breaking his heart. Holding out hope for them even as they do worse and worse things, constantly trying to reach them and fix the division created between men and elves.
The devastation he felt when Numenor sank. Sure that his family had been wiped out again.
Elendil coming ashore, heartbroken over thinking he lost his sons in the storm, and being utterly confused by this elf who, yeah, he expected would be an ally, but he didn’t expect to greet him like a long lost son, and cry with him over Isildur and Anarion and all of Numenor. Silver lining he can see his family way more often now.
Elrond who never stopped calling himself Peredhil because he may have chosen the fate of elves but he never stopped being half a man, and his brother’s people are his people too.
Elrond mourning every single member of his very extended family, whether they died of old age or before their time, and never hardening his heart despite all the sorrow (because how many elves get to celebrate so many children?)
Celebrian being a little concerned over this at first, until she visits her fiancé after the war of the last alliance and meets Valendil as a child who just lost his grandfather, uncle, father and 3 older brothers, after which she is like “I just met the heir of Isildur but if anything happened to him I would kill everyone in this room and then myself.”
Elrond having two copies of all his records on his brother’s house made. He leaves one copy on middle earth, shipping it to Gondor where it is an incredibly important historical document, but takes the originals when he sails.
So when Elrond gets to Valinor he can take thousands of years worth of letters written in his family’s handwriting, small portraits most of which he comissioned himself, flowers he was gifted by toddlers playing in his garden pressed between pages and pages of every little detail he could gather on the story of these people’s lives-
-and give it to Elwing, who will never get to meet any of them, but now has as much as he can give her of them.
Elrond having the biggest heart in existence.
That is all.

I feel like Bilbo would be fully willing to criticize the choices of first age elves to their faces entirely based on how well details of their stories could be put to verse in westron, a language that did not exist at the time.
“Your cloak was trimmed in purple!? No that won’t do at all! Do you even understand how hard it is to rhyme purple? It’s quite inconsiderate to preform song-worthy deeds in purple you know! Humph, I guess we must make do with metaphor, but I shall have to completely reconstruct the meter for this whole stanza so that it scans! Quite inconvenient. What do you mean?! Of course I have to describe the colors you wore, how else shall the listener picture the scene! Now, let’s go for a walk in the garden, and you can point out which blooms are closest in hue to your cloak-trim. What did you eat before the battle by the way?”
“WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU DON’T REMEMBER!?!”
Bilbo’s unrepentant willingness to scold fearsome warlords over the poetic potential of their outfits, and unforgivable inability to provide culinary details utterly delights Elrond, who is usually the only person in the room that realizes Bilbo is 100% messing with them.
Elrond gets as close to moping as he ever does when Celebrian insists that he can’t bring Bilbo to his first meeting with his parents in 6000 years, because “Love, the whole point of the exercise is YOU talking to them, not laughing at how confused Bilbo makes them! Bring him next time.”

imagine being the messenger who has to go back to Nargothrond and say the king won’t be coming home NOT because the Fëanorians killed him and buried him in a shallow grave in the woods, like several people lowkey suspected would happen when he went on this hunting trip, but because he discovered the Secondborn and he means to stay with them, [attempts to imitate Finrod’s cheerful shrug, anthropologist’s glee, and Teleri accent] “Oh, at least through the winter! I haven’t even fully learned their language yet, and apparently they’re often hunted then by an invisible monster called the ‘flu’—the least I can do is help them slay it!”

Thinking about how by the time Feanor is reembodied, if he is before the Dagor Dagorath, he’s going to walk out of Mandos into a Valinor that doesn’t speak a dialect of Quenya he understands.
It’s likely to be basically a creole of the various dialects of sindarin and silvan and Quenya, with Adunaic and other manish influences, (Especially Hobbit-accented Westron, because there’s no way half of Valinor didn’t learn westron to speak with the ring bearers, they must have been the most interesting thing to happen to the place since Numenor sunk).
It’ll be messy, and familiar but unfamiliar, and Feanor would probably pick it up in five minutes, and start writing his first treatise on what is most wrong with it on minute six.
