My fave piece from this last week. 🤗 I learned from Maria Helena’s workshop to think in 3s. Make a piece where you can see if far away (the large gold letters), from a mid point range (the smaller letters), and upclose (the finer details like the lace and the shadow/highlight).

The Khmer alphabet has 74 characters: 33 consonants, 23 vowels, and 12 independent and its own numbering characters. The vowels have different sounds based on the consonants it is used with so sometimes it feels like 24 vowels and accent marks give it a different sound as well. It is considered the language with the most alphabets.

When I was a kid, we were taught to sing The Land is Your Land much like it was the national anthem. It was only when I grew older and went to college did I realize that the song were never taught to its fullest. It all sounds so uplifting but the last 2 stanzas talk about private property and poverty in the US. This really is a song about social injustice. I still love it even more that I know it’s about social injustice and inequality that we overlook or are in denial in the US.

I reworked this Champa Battambang piece with gilded gold and a full floral border. Each lettering took a day and the gilding and floral each took a day. A total of 4 days but I loved how everything came out. What do you think?

Champa Battambang is a famous Khmer song from the 60s sung by renown singer Sinn Sisamouth. It translates to frangipani (plumeria) of Battambang which is a metaphor.

I normally like to keep my work simple but I thought why not add red and gold like the examples I’ve been seeing. I made the Khmer calligraphy predominant but added an English translation in tinted red uncial writing (0° angle). Unfortunately I didn’t give enough bottom padding so if I frame this I would give extra padding at the bottom.

“Baby elephant water play.”

This piece is inspired by a recent news coming out of Botswana where elephants were mysteriously dying. Having been at an elephant orphanage in Kenya, it really saddened me because they’ve been hunted and stripped of their land and now dying for no reason.

New client project: calligraphy logo for Dirt Under My Skirt.

I met MJ at a Facebook Elevate event last year. She’s the host of an amazing podcast called Cocktails and Cancer and she’s now launching a new initiative to promote mental wellness. She came to me with some ideas and I went to work just writing a bunch of variations before she settled on a version she liked. This logo was then vectorized for that clean sharp lines to be used for any future media usage. I am very happy with it. What do you guys think?
