Lauren Hemp x Aussie! Reader
Warnings: fluff, but awkward.
A/N — I know Caroline Weir scored the two goals in the Man City game that I talk about, but I've changed it a bit :)

______________________
Growing up in Australia was among the greatest privileges you had as a child.
Even in the midst of your career — a job you've dreamed of since you were little — your home soil was indescribable; nothing could beat the familiarity of home.
When the 2023 World Cup was announced to take place in Australia, you were feeling the effects of homesickness after six long months in Europe. You were signed by Manchester City at Nineteen, playing a critical midfield position after being a regular sub for your old club back in Australia. Your parents were sceptical of you leaving so early to such a big club. In no way were you prepared to face the challenges of adulthood as a whole other country, on the opposite side of the Earth.
You had only been playing for the Matildas for a couple of months when you were first signed to City, and it wasn't until the following year when your fellow Aussie teammates Alanna, and eventually Hayley and Mary, that you had the comfort of home to nurture you during rough patches.
Your family was your biggest supporter. Growing up, they sacrificed everything to meet the needs of their football journey. Your parents would leave early from work early to take you to training and surrender endless personal endeavours so that you could prosper in your dreams of going pro. You were very grateful for all that they had done, and as a result, their sacrifices became your motivation to be the best you could possibly be. You lived and breathed football. Everything revolved around football.
But when you moved to City, you found yourself stuck in a trance by a certain English Blonde.
For the most part, you kept to yourself at training. You didn't want to cause any trouble, and it seemed that most of the girls knew each other from youth squads, prior teams, or roommates at National Camps. You struggled to find your place in the squad at first. Being a relatively young team, you had lots of girls around your age, willing to be your friend, but the absence of home and lack of connection to the United Kingdom combined to make your personality shrink under a dismissive persona.
When Alanna joined City, you offered your apartment to her, having come from North London beforehand. Over the next months, you found comfort in the familiar Aussie accent, finding solace in the sliver of home you felt so distant to.
You still remained shy at training, trying hard and pushing out of your comfort zone every time someone had a conversation with you. Alanna found it hard to believe how introverted you were, having seen your confidence shine at Matilda’s Camps, and the Manchester Girls couldn't believe their ears when Alanna told them about how you were at home.
When Hayley came, you were smiling more. It wasn't that you weren't happy at City before the Australian girls arrived. You were thriving. In the 2020/21 season, you were dubbed as Young Player of The Year and had four ‘Player Of The Match’ awards under your belt. You worked extremely hard to make the starting eleven regularly, and people would often compliment your subtle but impressionable skills on the field. You weren't fast, but you were technical. You thought of the play that hadn't happened yet, shaping the game with unexpected yet calculated crosses. For two years, you had the second most assists in the WSL, merely missing Beth Mead.
In all honesty, the effects of having the reminder of home did help to boost your performance not only on the pitch but behind the scenes as well.
You can remember tapping your hands against the rim of your cubby, your home kit baggy on your figure. It was a very important game today — the final of the FA Women’s League Cup — against reigning champions Chelsea. You were starting, and your family had flown over to watch.
Your nerves upon walking out were tremendous. This was your first time starting in a final in the WSL. You don't remember a time you felt your hands shake this much. Alanna and Hayley were preparing for the match on either side of you, their faces impassive when both teams lined up in the tunnel of Cherry Rose Records Stadium.
Your heart was thumping out of your chest, palms sweating as you took your spot on the field.
When the whistle blew, you tuned everything out.
A powerful shot from Sam Kerr left Chelsea in the lead halfway through the first half. You tried hard to maneuver your way through the likes of Charles and Ingle, passing to Georgia and Keira as you struggled to pass Chelsea’s defence. Lucy was given a yellow which heightened the tension reeling in the stands. You buried the apprehensive bile rising in your stomach when the halftime whistle blew, signalling everyone to rush back to the changing rooms.
You placed your head in your hands, taking slow, desperate sips of your water bottle as you listened to the pep talks from all the players. Gareth Taylor, your manager, was shouting encouragement from across the room, staring into each and every one of your eyes, assuring the team that they could make a comeback.
“I want you to want this.” He said, circling the room with so much fervour that the room felt warmer. “I want to see the determination in your eyes. I want to see it in the tackles, the plays, the kicks, everything. The opportunities you making are good, they just need more precision.”
It was almost the start of the second half when Gareth asked for you, leading you over to the other side of the changing rooms, towards the shorter figure of one of your teammates.
Lauren looked just as nervous as you, but you hoped that you his your nerves a little better than her. Her blonde hair was held up in a pony, and small wisps of baby hairs framed her face after being exempted from the wind. She was a year older than you but has been in Manchester since 2018. Other than the odd, unusual sentence or two, neither of you had properly interacted.
Lauren looked up at you, her beady eyes locking with yours as she licked her lips, exchanging glances with the floor and you, awaiting the purpose of the conversation.
“I want you two to work together this half.” Your Manager urged. Both you and Lauren looked at him in surprise. He must've caught on since he held his hands up. “I know we haven't practised much between the two of you, I know. But Y/N, your crosses over the head of Chelsea defenders will inevitably shape up some opportunities for Hempo. Lauren, you know what to do when something comes up. I believe that truly, alright? Do you understand?”
You were still mulling over Gareth’s words when the whistle blew for the second half, but you felt an uncertain pair of eyes look out for where you kicked the ball. The surveillance of the English forward did not irk you. In fact, it pushed you to do as you were told.
It was two minutes in when an opportunity arose. You were given the ball by Alanna, who had pelted it away after a scary interaction with her and Kerr.
Gareth’s words played in your head, taunting you as the blonde’s eyes watched your actions intently. You were hesitant to do as he said. This was the one game your parents were here to see. Never once had they been to Europe, having not had the money to be able to fund both your football and fancy holidays overseas. You wanted to make them proud. You didn't want to risk such an important opportunity for it to go out or concede and let your team down.
You found Georgia and kicked it by her. She followed it up the middle of the field, passing it to one of your forwards, hand up in celebration when it went past the Goalie.
But for some reason, you couldn't find it in you to celebrate. You refused to meet the eyes of Lauren, who was no doubt throwing you a disappointed glance. You could feel the betrayal radiating in violent waves. You ran back to your starting position without a peep, determined to shake the guilt with another chance. You needed to win this game. You’d do whatever it took to do so.
Another goal from Ellen White led your team one in front, but it gave no comfort whatsoever in a game like this. If anything, it put the stakes higher. You hated penalties, the feeling of dread and anxiety filling you everything you watched each player attempt to concede. Even more so, you hated taking penalties. The possibility of that happening was enough to motivate you even more.
Guro Reiten was subbed off for Lauren James. A fresh pair of legs was dangerous coming up to the seventieth minute.
Chelsea was drawing closer and closer to equalizing with your second goal, causing an uprise in the tension between both the teams and the people watching. You grew more angsty when one of their attempts hit the crossbar, but when it landed near Keira’s feet, being shot past to where you stood, you knew this was now or never.
You sprinted down the wing with Georgia by your side, but you were only focused on the blonde in front of you.
“Here! Here!” Georgia screamed, holding out her hand to signal to you that she was ready. You contemplated it. There had been many times when Georgia had done that, and you had crossed the ball to her, and she had easily swished it past the goalie. You never doubted Georgia for a second, and you definitely knew she would've been able to shoot from where she was — she was clearly onside. But the Chelsea defenders had studied your gameplay back to front, and the same old cross to Georgia was something they had trained for — something you had trained for.
Something clicked in your mind when you met Lauren’s eyes. Something ignited inside of you. She must've felt it too, because she didn't even reach her hand up to signal towards you.
You both just knew what was happening. And that it would work. It had to work.
Without much thought, you kicked the ball to your right, watching as Chelsea gaped in alarm at the unsuspected pass and turn to and from Lauren.
You held your breath, stationery at the sight of Lauren’s risky attempts. She found a steady pace along the sideline stepping past Jess Carter, keeping her back turned to the goal. She used the back of her heel to trick both Carter and Berger. She had scored. Manchester City were winning 3-1.
You were the first to scream, a massive smile on your face as you ran towards Lauren, who spun to find you amidst the swarm of Chelsea players.
The two of you ran into each other with so much force that you both toppled to the ground, rolling around as the rest of your team piled on top of you.
The girls were screaming, you could hear the distant cheers of people in the stands. You heard Lauren’s exhausted huffs as you shovelled your head into her neck. Neither of you said anything. You both just had the silent agreement that what you did was game-changing, and that the non-existent relationship between you was no longer.
Despite the desperate attempts from the London team, the final whistle blew with the score maintaining a healthy lead. Your legs gave out as soon as the game ended, tears threatening to spill from your eyes and onto your cheeks as the weight of the season lifted from your shoulders. You felt a pair of arms lift you up, turning you around. The hug was only recently familiar, but tangible nonetheless.
Lauren held her arms around your waist, leaving you to collapse your arms over her shoulders. You watched her chest rise and fall, however, so slowly, a few choked sobs rang out from the older girl.
“I thought you weren't ‘gonna pass to me.” She said. You don't remember her ever speaking to you directly, but the attention made you blush.
“You could've gotten a double if I did.” You uttered, pulling her out of the hug. “I’m sorry.”
“Don’t be.” She replied, her cheeks also dusted pink. “I'm just glad it was your assist.”
You wondered if she was trying to make you flustered because you noticed how fidgety she got when you eyed her nervously.
“I mean like— I like you— wait, no, well— I like your assist-”
“Same. I mean— I'm glad you scored from my assist. Like— okay wait that doesn't make sense.”
“I get what you’re saying. That's what I meant.” Lauren muttered back, rubbing the back of her neck in embarrassment. “I wouldn't have wanted anyone else to assist me… in goals.”
“Yeah, same… in goals, yeah.”
Little did you know, your Aussie teammates Hayley and Alanna were standing next to Keira and Georgia, all overlooking the inept exchange between the two of you.
“God, you call that flirting.” Georgia laughed, the other three chuckling along. “Wouldn't want to see what their dates would look like.”
“Bloody painful, that's what.” Alanna sounded, taking a picture of the two of you.
“Wouldnt of expected anything different, to be honest. Both as awkward as each other.” Keira spoke.
And you were as awkward as each other, but that made for the perfect pair. A home away from home.

Harriet Walter on Caroline’s relationship with Kendall and in particular some of the past dynamics that are driving her conversation (or lack thereof) with Kendall in Season 2.
“Kendall’s quite a sort of complicated guy. There was a scene that didn’t get into the final cut in Season 1 where we had a little duo scene where it’s very evident that Kendall has a lot of anger towards his mother. And sort of as the oldest son blames her for a lot of – you know maybe he got the brunt of the divorce because he was the most aware of what was going on. . . . Here’s this guy who has been pretty angry with me in the past. And I think she says something like ‘Have you got over your – is it something you're gonna blame me for again?’ So that’s what she immediately assumes when he says ‘Can we talk?’ she thinks she’s gonna be in for a bit of blame and a bit of reckoning that she can’t quite face.”
The deleted Season 1 scene she references is included below the cut.
Tumblr media
Harriet Walter has mentioned a few times that she thinks Caroline was "kicked out" of the family, probably for having an affair and getting caught. I can definitely see Kendall knowing more of the details than Shiv and Roman both by virtue of age and his relationship with Logan (and being pulled pretty hard into Logan's point of view).

20 Questions for Fic Writers Game
tagged by the wonderful @autisticempathydaemon (chrissy my beloved <33 also you HAVE to let me know if you start writing for castleaudios >:3)
tagging - you, reading this!! also (no pressure!): @dominimoonbeam @glassbearclock @taelonsamada @romirola @lovelylonerliterature @genginger @ninzied @evilbunnyking @nerdierholler @commander-krios @chroniclesinlacuna @kesla @mordinette @garglyswoof @nagia-pronounced-neijia
1 - How many works do you have on AO3?
oh god, 128! but this is an underestimate, because i've anon'd some older fics/fandoms hehehe. i've been 'round ao3 since 2012!
2 - What's your total AO3 word count?
498,649... now this is actually accurate. 300k of that is from 2020 until now. basically the pandemic got me on a writing kick.
3 - What fandoms do you write for?
SO MANY. 19 according to ao3, but right now? baldurs gate & redacted audios >:3 there is another halsin fic in the works...
4 - What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
oh god. okay. you'll get some older fics here: 1. got me on my best (bad) behaviour 2. Call me scent o' mental, but I'm crazy about you (teen wolf....) 3. all bark, no bite 4. devils and ghosts (frank castle / karen page!! love this one heh) 5. sweeter than honey (ofc halsin makes it ahaha)
5 - Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
YES. there are only a few exceptions, when I've written something that touches close to home / a sensitive topic.
6 - What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
hmm...bittersweet endings were my wheelhouse for a long time. OKAY. let's do this one: too little, too late. caroline forbes and klaus mikaelson, set at the end of the originals. yeah.
7 -What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
....nowadays, I mostly write happier endings sadhfjk lets go with: bioluminescence, which follows on from the events of blood moon (@/barbwrites) and takes marco on a roadtrip to see luminescent algae up close and personal. (it's a loveletter to a summer I spent in california during a really difficult period of my life, and this fic means a lot to me <3)
8 - Do you get hate on fics?
I've not gotten hate, but I've definitely had some interesting comments over the years, for a variety of reasons, usually to do with the person's personal views. (one story had the main character smoking pot to calm their anxiety, and someone was not happy with that)
9 - Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
YEP. Smut with feelings is my FAVOURITE thing. I prefer sensual descriptions, because it is all about feelings and sensations with me. as an ace writer, I also like kink and monster fuckery heheheh.
10 - Do you write crossovers?
Not at all ahahahaha. Have I ever written a crossover? I don't think so. I love AUs though, and pacific rim AUs are one of my favourite concepts in fandom.
11 - Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Yes, and it was teen wolf, and honestly not one of my best. it was a hatchet job, they took random paragraphs and spliced it / wrote around it? someone flagged it to me in a comment, and it was taken down. all in all, a very weird experience.
12 - Have you ever had a fic translated?
No, but gosh, that'd be cool! <- stealing from lexi, agreed, would be awesome <3
13 - Have you ever co-written a fic before?
YES. It was FUN. It was a series of conversations between an estranged father and son, Colm and Milo Greer, with the incredibly talented @frenchiefitzhere (also tagging you for this meme!!). it's still one of my favourite things: An Honest Man Like Yourself
14 - What's your all time favorite ship?
ALL TIME FAVOURITE? How dare you. I love all my ships afjkdsfg Shakarian is pretty high up there. Kastle (karen page/ frank castle). All the werewolves from redacted. <3
15 - What's a WIP that you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?
ahhhh. okay. 'wander. wonder.' my poly longfic. don't hate me, but honestly, I've just not got the space for a longfic at the moment. never say never, but I've caught up with the chapters I had worked up, everything else is a vague outline. <3
16 - What are your writing strengths?
oof. I want to say character. most of the fun for me when writing is getting inside a characters head and figuring out their voice >:3
17 - What are your writing weaknesses?
Structuring longer, multi-chaptered stories - basically figuring out the pacing of it. I'm working on an original project, and I love it, but the first series of major edits will be breaking up my alternating POV sections into proper chapter breaks and letting myself linger more in moments instead of pushing forward (habits of a oneshot writer fdsds)
18 - Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
I've been meaning to have my estonian friend critique my estonian, but I'm pretty positive the 'bond' I referred to is actually the money kind, and not the emotional attachment I'd been hoping to refer to hfjdkssfdg. I do as much research as I can, but it's best to run it past someone who speaks the language!
19 - First fandom you wrote for?
hehehehe naruto. yep. I was a naruto kid. first posted online in 2007......
20 - Favorite fic you've written?
WHAT A QUESTION. honestly, I love what I have been writing the last three years. I've really let myself just write what I want to read, and it's been great. i'm going to cheat, and say the original project I'm working on that I won't let anyone see heheheh. <3 it's got werewolves, kink and explicit consent, and spun out a whole verse for me to play with (and a fun MMF sidestory that I also need to finish...)
gods this got LONG. Thank you for making it this far!! <3

Mystery Solved! Pippa Middleton and James Matthews have purchased Sir Terence Conran's previous estate in Berkshire: Barton Court.
Tumblr media
Reports about the Princess of Wales' sister Pippa's new estate in Berkshire have been quite vague, but today I finally found the planning permits.
The Matthews paid £15 million for Barton Court, located in Kintbury, Hungerford, Berkshire.
"Barton Court was built in 1772 for Admiral Lord Dundas: a typical, red-brick, early Georgian house of five bays with a projecting central open-pedimented entrance front, enhanced by round-headed windows in the upper storeys."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The top yellow star in the right part of the above map is the estate where Michael and Carol Middleton live in Bucklebury, and the solid red dot on the left is the location of James and Pippa Matthews' new estate. Close enough for a short car drive to visit, but far enough apart to allow each family some private time.
The planning permit request is for "Relocation of an outdoor swimming pool and construction of a tennis court within the walled garden, and conversion of a potting shed to associated changing room and plant room."
Below is the celebrated walled garden that will be replaced with tennis courts and possibly a very large swimming pool:
Tumblr media
Sir Terence Conran was a famous British designer who passed away in September 2020. He founded the Habitat and Conran shops. He was also renowned for designing restaurants, office buildings and stores. Conran ran several restaurants and wrote more than 50 books about design.

House and Garden UK did a nice feature on the property with many color photos taken by Princess Margaret's ex-husband, if you're curious about the interior of Pippa's new home.
From the article: "In earlier days a stone-flagged hallway ran from the door to the stairway between the enclosing walls of adjacent rooms. These rooms have now been gutted to provide a combined hall and living room of vast area: over a hundred feet in length." Looks like the original tile is still in place.

Apparently, some of the family of Sir Terence Conran was very upset that his estate was sold, as it was said to have been his dream for the estate to remain in the family.
"Both the house and the estate, according to one visitor, were to be 'overseen by the Conran family'. But no longer: I can reveal that the house has been sold for £15 million, despite Conran's vision, which included selling fruit and vegetables from greenhouses and a massive walled garden.
Members of the family appear to be in the dark about quite why the sale has gone ahead. One tells me that it is the executors of Conran's will who are selling the property, not his widow, Lady Conran.
The interior designer Vicki Davis married Sir Terence in 2000 at Chelsea Town Hall. His children — Sebastian and Jasper by his second wife, Superwoman author Shirley Conran, and Tom, Sophie and Ned by his third, cookery writer Caroline Herbert — only learned of it later.
That was no accident: Conran's children, it was playfully said, needed an appointment to see him.
The executors of his will decline to comment. But I can disclose that Vicki has already left the house and a new family has moved in."
Little did we know in June 2022 that it was Pippa Middleton and her family who bought the estate!
But here is another article interviewing Conran's widow, Vicki. She felt the house was too much for one person to maintain, and that none of his many children would want the upkeep. Conran apparently did not die of Covid either. It's a good article, detailing his vast collections and giving you a better idea of what he was like. After living there 50 years, Conran's widow was given 8 weeks to pack up everything and move out by the new owners...
Here is the planning application map showing the property outline:
Tumblr media
Interestingly, the large buildings to the left of Barton Court are actually a very large custom furniture workshop and retail store. The owner, Sean Sutcliffe, "met Terence Conran and a firm friendship was made over a shared interest in making, wood, design and sustainability. They founded Benchmark together and our workshop and showroom are situated in the grounds of Terence’s country home."
Tumblr media
That should prove very interesting for Pippa and family - perhaps those who are royal watchers might plan to do some furniture shopping in the near future! I'm sure, however, that the Matthews family will have plans in place to secure the perimeter of their new estate - or perhaps Mr. Matthews will just buy Benchmark Furniture outright and have its premises moved. Pretty sure he can afford it, since they recently sold their Chelsea mansion for £22.5 million, £5.5 million more than he paid for it.

A 12-MONTH RECONCILLIATION & OTHER SUBJECTS
When Harry and Meghan decided to "step back" as "senior working royals" in January 2020, it was agreed by HM Queen Elizabeth II and the then Prince of Wales, HRH Prince Charles and HRH Prince William that a 12 month review of this decision would take place in January 2021. The fact Our Lady of Perpetual Victimhood is letting it be known in the press and popular media that the Sussex family is willing to reconcile with the rest of the family following the death of Her Majesty, but giving it a time scale of 12 months is testament to her pettiness. Not for her a press release saying "times like this make you realise how important family is..."
Her shallow, peevish, point-scoring, one-upmanship, mentality practically screams out for satisfaction, for revenge. This is why the Montecito Moanarchy has put a 12 month timescale on the reconciliation.
Harry, his memoir and Netflix. Poor old Harry, hey. What's a poor, misunderstood, downtrodden, hounded Princeling to do? Fed up with life in the goldfish bowl/Truman Show world that is the British Royal Family, he ups sticks with his wife and baby son, and, with the blessings of his family flees to that well known bastion of privacy and solitude, California.
Yes, after a decade spent playing call of duty doing his duty as a serving soldier in HM's army, followed by a stint as the 3rd wheel to the Prince and Princess of Wales, Saint Henry of the Wounded Ego, fed up to the back teeth of the constant hounding of the press and paparazzi of himself and his beleaguered girlfriend/wife made the very wise and impossibly grown-up decision to do what she tells him and they returned to her home state. They wanted to get away from all the intrusions and as Meghan said, they don't have tabloids where she comes from!
So, Harry wanted his privacy, as did Meghan. On their terms. This is the story of their lives. Everything has to be on their terms. Meghan has no problem giving interviews to Oprah, Ellen and now it seems every cut-rate gossip mag masquerading as serious journalism. Harry is willing to invade his own privacy as long as the price is right. Worse, if the price is better than he was expecting, he is quite happy to invade the privacy of the family he left behind in the UK.
His paymasters at Netflix and Penguin Random House have shelled out multi-million $$$ for the inside stories of the "Standing Out With the Sussexes" and "Harry Windsor - How I went From Spare to Hero to Handbag" and they want their pound of flesh. As we've seen, Harry is learning self-promotion well, people are already talking about the book, it's being insinuated that a chapter here and there is being either heavily edited/rewritten or even taken out and allusions are being made to the affair that never was between William and Rose Hanbury. Simply by doing that, he's garnered interest for the book and conversely for the series.
Another year, another paid for "humanitarian" award? Meghan's jealousy really does know no bounds does it?
On the anniversary of the moon landing, 20 July 2022, Boston was announced as the host city for this year's Earthshot Awards. Inspired by President John F. Kennedy's "moonshot" challenge, it seems fitting to have the second award here in his home city. Working with The John F. Kennedy Library Foundation and the city of Boston, the awards will be broadcast to a global audience. Ambassador Caroline Kennedy (JFK's daughter) said, " “There is no more important Moonshot today than repairing the planet and no better place to harness the Moonshot spirit than the City of Boston.”
Which brings us back to Meghan because of course it does. It always does. Suddenly a few days ago, along with President Zelensky of Ukraine, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were late announcements for the Robert F. Kennedy "Ripple of Hope" awards 2022. See? William is parterning with the Kennedys, America's answer to the royal family? Well, gosh, darn it! Meghan and Harry are going to do something with the Kennedy's too. So there!
Now, I'm not saying they paid for this award. I'm not 100% certain they could afford to pay for a table looking at the prices if the rumours of their financial situation is to be believed but, I'm also not not saying they paid for this award. They have a track record so, make of it what you will. Click on the photos of the other recipients and you get a short bio of who they are and the work they do (why they're getting the award). Click on the photo of the duplicitous duo and you get the photo credit. And yet, according to Kerry Kennedy, daughter of Robert F. Kennedy, the pair were made aware they had been awarded the prize back in March. To me, that speaks volumes.

Believe me, I never wanted to have to choose between tennis and a family. I don’t think it’s fair. If I were a guy, I wouldn’t be writing this because I’d be out there playing and winning while my wife was doing the physical labor of expanding our family. Maybe I’d be more of a Tom Brady if I had that opportunity. Don’t get me wrong: I love being a woman, and I loved every second of being pregnant with Olympia. I was one of those annoying women who adored being pregnant and was working until the day I had to report to the hospital—although things got super complicated on the other side. And I almost did do the impossible: A lot of people don’t realize that I was two months pregnant when I won the Australian Open in 2017. But I’m turning 41 this month, and something’s got to give.
I have never liked the word retirement. It doesn’t feel like a modern word to me. I’ve been thinking of this as a transition, but I want to be sensitive about how I use that word, which means something very specific and important to a community of people. Maybe the best word to describe what I’m up to is evolution. I’m here to tell you that I’m evolving away from tennis, toward other things that are important to me. A few years ago I quietly started Serena Ventures, a venture capital firm. Soon after that, I started a family. I want to grow that family.
But I’ve been reluctant to admit to myself or anyone else that I have to move on from playing tennis. Alexis, my husband, and I have hardly talked about it; it’s like a taboo topic. I can’t even have this conversation with my mom and dad. It’s like it’s not real until you say it out loud. It comes up, I get an uncomfortable lump in my throat, and I start to cry. The only person I’ve really gone there with is my therapist! One thing I’m not going to do is sugarcoat this. I know that a lot of people are excited about and look forward to retiring, and I really wish I felt that way. Ashleigh Barty was number one in the world when she left the sport this March, and I believe she really felt ready to move on. Caroline Wozniacki, who is one of my best friends, felt a sense of relief when she retired in 2020.
Praise to these people, but I’m going to be honest. There is no happiness in this topic for me. I know it’s not the usual thing to say, but I feel a great deal of pain. It’s the hardest thing that I could ever imagine. I hate it. I hate that I have to be at this crossroads. I keep saying to myself, I wish it could be easy for me, but it’s not. I’m torn: I don’t want it to be over, but at the same time I’m ready for what’s next. I don’t know how I’m going to be able to look at this magazine when it comes out, knowing that this is it, the end of a story that started in Compton, California, with a little Black girl who just wanted to play tennis. This sport has given me so much. I love to win. I love the battle. I love to entertain. I’m not sure every player sees it that way, but I love the performance aspect of it—to be able to entertain people week after week. Some of the happiest times in my life were spent waiting in that hallway in Melbourne, and walking out into Rod Laver Arena with my earphones in and trying to stay focused and drown out the noise but still feeling the energy of the crowd. Night matches in Arthur Ashe Stadium at Flushing Meadows. Hitting an ace on set point.
[...]
To me that’s kind of the essence of being Serena: expecting the best from myself and proving people wrong. There were so many matches I won because something made me angry or someone counted me out. That drove me. I’ve built a career on channeling anger and negativity and turning it into something good. My sister Venus once said that when someone out there says you can’t do something, it is because they can’t do it. But I did do it. And so can you.
[...]
There are people who say I’m not the GOAT because I didn’t pass Margaret Court’s record of 24 grand slam titles, which she achieved before the “open era” that began in 1968. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want that record. Obviously I do. But day to day, I’m really not thinking about her. If I’m in a grand slam final, then yes, I am thinking about that record. Maybe I thought about it too much, and that didn’t help. The way I see it, I should have had 30-plus grand slams. I had my chances after coming back from giving birth. I went from a C-section to a second pulmonary embolism to a grand slam final. I played while breastfeeding. I played through postpartum depression. But I didn’t get there. Shoulda, woulda, coulda. I didn’t show up the way I should have or could have. But I showed up 23 times, and that’s fine. Actually it’s extraordinary. But these days, if I have to choose between building my tennis résumé and building my family, I choose the latter.
[...]
The fact is that nothing is a sacrifice for me when it comes to Olympia. It all just makes sense. I want to teach her how to tie her shoes, how to read, where babies come from, and about God. Just like my mom taught me. As she grows, it’s something different every month. Lately she’s been into watching baking shows, which we do together. Now we bake with Play-Doh, which is so much fun. She loves this game called The Floor Is Lava, where you have to do whatever you can to avoid touching the ground. I love setting up my gym for the game, arranging my step-up boxes and weight machines like an obstacle course. Whatever she likes, I like.
I think tennis, by comparison, has always felt like a sacrifice—though it’s one I enjoyed making. When you’re younger, you see kids having fun, and you want to do that stuff but you know you have to be on the court, hoping that one day it will all pay off. I got pushed hard by my parents. Nowadays so many parents say, “Let your kids do what they want!” Well, that’s not what got me where I am. I didn’t rebel as a kid. I worked hard, and I followed the rules. I do want to push Olympia—not in tennis, but in whatever captures her interest. But I don’t want to push too hard. I’m still trying to figure out that balance.
[...]
I don’t particularly like to think about my legacy. I get asked about it a lot, and I never know exactly what to say. But I’d like to think that thanks to opportunities afforded to me, women athletes feel that they can be themselves on the court. They can play with aggression and pump their fists. They can be strong yet beautiful. They can wear what they want and say what they want and kick butt and be proud of it all. I’ve made a lot of mistakes in my career. Mistakes are learning experiences, and I embrace those moments. I’m far from perfect, but I’ve also taken a lot of criticism, and I’d like to think that I went through some hard times as a professional tennis player so that the next generation could have it easier. Over the years, I hope that people come to think of me as symbolizing something bigger than tennis. I admire Billie Jean because she transcended her sport. I’d like it to be: Serena is this and she’s that and she was a great tennis player and she won those slams.
Unfortunately I wasn’t ready to win Wimbledon this year. And I don’t know if I will be ready to win New York. But I’m going to try. And the lead-up tournaments will be fun. I know there’s a fan fantasy that I might have tied Margaret that day in London, then maybe beat her record in New York, and then at the trophy ceremony say, “See ya!” I get that. It’s a good fantasy. But I’m not looking for some ceremonial, final on-court moment. I’m terrible at goodbyes, the world’s worst. But please know that I am more grateful for you than I can ever express in words. You have carried me to so many wins and so many trophies. I’m going to miss that version of me, that girl who played tennis. And I’m going to miss you.

OSCARS AWARDS: The stunning stats behind Piastris stellar junior career as he gets set for F1 debut
Oscar Piastri will graduate to F1 with McLaren in 2023 – taking Daniel Ricciardo’s spot alongside Lando Norris – as he looks to build on an enviable racing record to date and perform on the big stage. Ahead of his Grand Prix debut, we decided to run through his motorsport exploits so far and look at the key stats and numbers he's notched up along the way… -- 3 -- Piastri has won three single-seater titles on his way to the F1 grid, claiming the Formula Renault Eurocup crown with French outfit R-ace GP in 2019 before landing back-to-back F2 and F3 championships with Italian squad Prema in 2020 and 2021. READ MORE: McLaren rookie Piastri explains why he chose #81 as his race number for 2023 He also finished second to British racer Jamie Caroline while contesting the 2017 British F4 championship with Arden Motorsport – the outfit co-created and formerly run by now Red Bull team boss Christian Horner. -- 14 -- With Piastri’s racing taking him across the UK, Europe and beyond, he won races at 14 tracks while climbing the ranks, starting with Oulton Park, Snetterton, Knockhill and Silverstone in British F4, before adding Spa-Francorchamps, the Nurburgring, the Hungaroring, and the Yas Marina Circuit in Formula Renault Eurocup. On his promotion to F3, Piastri grew the list with wins at the Red Bull Ring and the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, with the Bahrain International Circuit, Monza, Sochi and Jeddah following in F2. It means he has already triumphed at nine current F1 venues. Piastri progresses to F1 with McLaren on the back of a glittering junior racing career -- 16 -- During his time in the aforementioned categories, Piastri delivered plenty of eye-catching qualifying laps to bag himself 16 pole positions. Six of those came in British F4 in 2017, five in Formula Renault Eurocup two years later, and five throughout the 2021 F2 campaign. -- 21 -- In addition to a healthy pole tally, Piastri raced his way to a total of 21 victories from 2016 to 2021, again hitting six in British F4, then taking seven in Formula Renault Eurocup, two in F3 and six in F2. The Australian also set 21 fastest laps during the same period. READ MORE: ‘He’s a very strong team mate to learn from’ – Piastri excited to work with Norris at McLaren -- 46 -- Given his victory record, Piastri unsurprisingly made plenty of podium appearances from F4 to F2, taking home 46 trophies in just over five years of competition. That gives him a 35% rostrum conversion rate for all the single-seater races he has contested up to this point. -- 60.5 -- After pipping Sauber junior Theo Pourchaire and fellow 2023 F1 rookie Logan Sargeant (now signed to Williams) to the F3 title, Piastri enjoyed a dominant victory margin in F2. He ended the 2021 season 60.5 points clear of Ferrari-backed Robert Shwartzman, with now Alfa Romeo racer Zhou Guanyu nine further back. This feature is currently not available because you need to provide consent to functional cookies. Please update your cookie preferences Oscar Piastri's best moments so far -- 105 -- Piastri was a scoring machine across his junior career, with 105 points finishes giving him an impressive conversion rate of 80%. However, this would have been even higher if a handful of guest appearances during the 2018 Formula Renault NEC championship had counted for points. -- 131 -- To put the above numbers into more context, Piastri’s points, podiums and wins until now have come from 131 races, spanning his first outing in F4 UAE at Yas Marina on December 16, 2016 to the F2 finale at the same venue on December 12, 2021. READ MORE: Why Ricciardo reckons his McLaren struggles can give replacement Piastri a ‘head start’ in his maiden season -- 1,343 -- Across those 131 races, and with various scoring systems in place, Piastri amassed a whopping 1,343 points, with attention now turning to what he can achieve when he arrives in F1 and begins the latest chapter of his burgeoning motorsport career. via Formula 1 News https://www.formula1.com

Artists on the Lam presents
HYGGE
An online art exhibition
Opening: Monday, 30 January 2023
Exhibition dates: 30 January – 19 March 2023
hy·gge (pronunciation: hyoo-guh) noun
1.      a quality of coziness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or wellbeing, evoked by simple comforts such as being wrapped in a blanket, having good conversations, enjoying food, etc.
2.      a form of everyday togetherness; a pleasant and highly valued everyday experience of safety, equality, personal wholeness and a spontaneous social flow
We’ve all been there: trudging through snow, trying to shield our faces from wind so cold it hurts, questioning our lives and life itself.
One thing this pandemic has taught us is how to better appreciate the simple joys of staying in, being with people you care about, and enjoying art together, from watching a film to browsing an online art exhibition—really!
Creating interactive exhibitions in person—such as 2016’s acclaimed LEXICON and 2012’s acclaimed I CAN DO THAT—had been Chicago artist and independent curator Jenny Lam’s forte. When Lam pivoted to digital exhibits during the pandemic, this resulted in such shows as 2020’s acclaimed SLAYSIAN, which not only garnered praise but also had outlets remarking on the very nature of the virtual platform:
Sixty Inches from Center: “Since she couldn’t bring audiences to see the show in person, she brought SLAYSIAN directly to audiences, transforming it into an online exhibition we can view from the safety of our homes. It’s now available for us to click through in digital space, where we are free to take our time and linger over the amazing work of all the artists she brought together, including extra multimedia content that wouldn’t have been possible in a traditional physical exhibition space.”
Winter’s Bloom: “Every one of the featured artists [has] a rich story to share and I encourage you to take a moment to sit with them, to share them. Just this morning my nieces came into bed with me, snuggling on a lazy Sunday. On a whim I pulled up Jenny Lam’s website and we spent the morning scrolling through the exhibit, reading about the artists and choosing our favorite pieces.”
South Side Weekly: “The digital forum offers the opportunity for at-home viewers to take part in this important work—to help these stories grow, evolve, and be seen.”
This new year, Artists on the Lam warmly welcomes you to enjoy HYGGE, a new online art exhibition curated by Jenny Lam. Stay in your PJs, grab your drink of choice, and experience art, all without braving the elements.
HYGGE features 30 talented artists working in all mediums and forms (painting, illustration, photography, sculpture, multimedia, textiles, you name it) at all stages of their careers (for some of them, this is their first exhibition ever) from all over the world (for a couple of them, it’s currently summer, and we’re quite jealous). They include:
Alix Anne Shaw, Andrew Nelson, Anthony Le, Caroline Walser, Charles Inge, Christine Lozano, Cristy Corso, Danielle Pontarelli, Darcie Denton, Darin Latimer, David Martinez, Diane Ponder, Eli Tatosian, Emily Calvo, Glenn Wexler, Han Songyun, Karen I. Hirsch, Katharine Joy Houpt, Kristel Becares, Kristen Neveu, Kurt Kreissl, Marie Magnetic, Mark Pol, Mendy, Nancy Bechtol, Nancy Natow-Cassidy, Patricia Biesen, Sami Mark, Su Lin Lim, and Tony Tran.
View the exhibition at http://www.artistsonthelam.com/hygge (main page) & http://www.artistsonthelam.com/hygge-artists (click on each thumbnail to read each artist’s story and browse their artwork)

Artists on the Lam has launched the careers of emerging artists and provided a prominent platform for emerging, mid-career, and established artists alike, whether it’s through the blog that started it all, or through groundbreaking—and rule-breaking—interactive art shows in pop-up locations throughout Chicago. From massive audience participatory exhibitions like LEXICON, which was lauded by visitors as “wonderful training and exercise in the world of art appreciation,” to stored celebrations like SLAYSIAN, which South Side Weekly commended for its “role in educating and engaging with the broader Chicago community” and for showcasing “a subset of artists that have always been part of the city’s art scene, but rarely acknowledged as a collective,” Artists on the Lam has always taken pride in being at the forefront of art.

Dawn O'Porter is the writer and broadcaster with the sharp bob, vintage clothes and brilliantly witty turn of phrase. We’ve met lots of times over the years and she’s always the best company.
She's married to comedian Chris O' Dowd who she met in LA, fifteen years ago.  Since then they've shuttled between America and the UK, bringing up their two boys Art and Valentine. She told me how having babies has made her more productive - getting more writing done and having more ideas.
And so it seems... Dawn has multiple projects underway: her new book Cat Lady has just been published; she has a new clothes collection out with Joanie Clothing, and when we spoke, she'd recently helped put on Flackstock Festival in memory of her great friend Caroline Flack who took her own life in 2020.
Because her sons were so little at the time that Caroline died, just before the pandemic, Dawn explained she cried in cupboards for months so they wouldn't see her upset.  She also talked about losing her mum, aged seven, and how that hit her recently when her own little boy turned seven.
Dawn and I had a brilliant conversation where we moaned about some stuff, laughed about others and both concluded it’s good to acknowledge all the good things in life.. and it’s good to wear fabulous secondhand clothes no matter what you’re up to - even if it’s just the school run.

Uganda’s Charles Lambert Refused to Pay Nigerian Investor
Charles Lambert, the founder of Black Wall Street, the self-styled ‘Pan African Centre of Commerce’, is hounding after failing in initial attempts at bribery, for publishing a story on the his platform’s failure redeem its pledge to a Nigerian investor.
On May 1, 2022, had reported that Adeosun Oluwaseyi, a Lagos-based banker, accused Black Wall Street of refusing to return his N1 million investment in the platform since 2020.
Adeosun had told that he invested the sum in May 2020 after he was promised a monthly Return On Investment (ROI) of N45,500.
“It was Williams Nwachi, my friend, who introduced me to the company. He was a marketer at the so-called Black Wall Street during the period. As a result of my trust in him, I decided to invest my money in the company, based on his recommendation,” Adeosun said.
“It turned out that investing my hard-earned N1 million was the greatest mistake of my life.”
The banker said he purchased five investment slots at the rate of N200,000 each from the company. He also said Nwachi made the payment on his behalf.
“My friend was owing me N20,000. So, after sending him N980,000, he added the amount he was owing me to it and assisted me in buying five slots. I later sent him another N10,000 for ‘activation of investment,'” he said.

Adeosun said an official at Black Wall Street would later reach out to him to say it would take six months for his returns to mature.
“They said I would be able to make withdrawals after six months,” the banker said.

However, after waiting for six months, Adeosun received no return.
“I made the investment in May 2020 and waited patiently until the end of the promised six months. In the end, all I got was another message telling me to wait for another six months.”

Adeosun also said that all his complaints regarding the promised returns were received with rude responses from the company.
“Their responses were always placing emphasis on my impatience,” Adeosun said.
“Now, I don’t even know if I will ever be able to get my N1 million back any more.”

On its site, Lambert claims to be working on several business projects such as building a ground-breaking software applications that will be monetized.
Through this, Lambert is able to solicit monetary commitments from interested investors, with a promise that they would reap bountiful profits in return, once the project is completed.
sent an email to Black Wall Street for comments on the complaint made by Adeosun, but, no response had been received as of press time.
BRIBERY ATTEMPTS AFTER THE STORY
Sometime in early September, a male caller reached out to ‘Fisayo Soyombo, to know what could be done to pull the story down. The response was clear we do not pull published stories down; however, once Black Wall Street pays the complainant, we would publish a follow-up story reflecting the payment.
Caroline asked Soyombo if he could mediate in Black Wall Street’s conversations with Oluwaseyi, the investor, but he declined. Their conversations with Oluwaseyi did not end up as anticipated, though, as the investor rejected their offer of a refund of his N1 million investment. Instead, he insisted on being paid his principal as well as the RoIs. With the two parties unable to reach an agreement, something strange happened.

Swiss-born and Parisian-based visual and performance artist Caroline Denervaud’s art is a reflection of her studies in dance. She allows the movement of her body to determine her brush stroke as the body’s movement directly reflects mood, energy, and feelings. The art, therefore, becomes almost rhythmic. “Then come the colors that create shapes and connections between them… My paintings are the reflection of an instant, a conversation and play between colors and shapes telling hidden poems and stories.”

A Paeen To Humility
Tumblr media
If life feels frustrating, there’s a reason. Frustration is a condition throughout the universe.  Even electrons are vulnerable. Because an imbalance exists between the places for them in one layer of the quantum soup and another, each time the layers interact, the quantum particles must scramble for positions like players in a game of musical chairs.  Though existence is hard for electrons, scientists suspect they can use that frustration to increase reliability when encoding digital information. In politics, frustration is a boon for antacid manufacturers. Each new poll in our divided nation sends many to the drugstore. Current tallies for the 2024 election show Donald Trump leads Joe Biden by a few percentage points, a difference that keeps Democrats awake at night worried about the return of a failed president whose agenda is political revenge.    Logic suggests the polls are wrong.  In 2020, Joe Biden defeated Trump by 7 million votes. Is it reasonable to suppose that 4 years later, these 7 million find Trump’s 91 felony charges an asset?  Should we suppose that women, even in red states like Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, and Ohio, who have voted to enshrine abortion rights into their state constitutions will find Trump’s call for a national ban irresistible? People are more complex than the polls can reflect, it would seem.   This morning, a  friend in California surprised me with a phone call. We haven’t met for several years but we’ve stayed in touch with birthday cards and holiday messages. He opened our conversation with a few lines from my memoir,  Getting Lost to Find Home.  His speech sounded urgent, as he feared I’d missed the importance of what I’d written. Afterward, he thanked me for reminding him that friendships needed nurturing, and he resolved to do better with ours. The sweetness of his remark stuck in my throat like a  lump of hard candy. I doubted my friend could have foreseen the feeling of communion that rose within me or fathom the compliment he’d paid me by reading my words with feeling.  When our conversation ended, I returned to the blog I was writing, compulsively, the way a crow returns to a crust of bread at the side of the road once traffic has subsided.  My thoughts returned to an interview with David Brooks I’d just read. (“Q&A,” AARP  Bulletin, Nov. 23, pgs. 40-41.)    Brooks is a columnist whose political views are more conservative than mine. Many times, I’ve crushed his commentaries from my easy chair, though he never knew it.  Even so, over the years, he seemed to have mellowed, and I am gratified that in his interview, he confirmed my assessment.  I’ve learned to be more relational and humbler, he confesses. Time’s passing has a way of changing perspective.  For example, I have rid myself of the notion that humans rule the planet.  As a species, we are no more in control of the ground beneath our feet than were David Thoreau’s warring red and black ants in Walden Pond.   China’s Xi Jinping and Russia’s Vladimir Putin may imagine otherwise and hope to find a place for themselves in the pantheon of great leaders. More likely the pain and distrust they sow will grow like graveyard weeds to one day blot out their memory. Jews and Palestineans are at war again, the historical residue of tyrants and old men bent in prayer who exhort their followers to slaughter non-believers.  Do these disparate sides not see the absurdity of that call? No other mammalian slaughters its own in greater numbers than our species. That isn’t Nature’s way.  It is human vainglory. With both sides drenched in the blood of their enemy, the time has come for all to see no triumph lies in war. A dead child pulled from the rubble of a bombed building is the universal source of human tears.     We can do better.  Let there be no more learned hate. Frustration may exist in the universe, but we can choose our response.  We either yield to it or build a wall of defiance.  If we choose the latter, let imagination be the bricks of our fortress and communion its mortar. When we fill the cracks between oblivion in service to one another, we give our frail and inauspicious species primacy and establish compassion as human law throughout a deaf, dumb, and blind cosmos.

Bookwormy stuff
Tumblr media
Dear Caroline:
I imagine you are self-deprecating, as I don't think it fear to describe your goodreads as a 'cultural wasteland'. I will grant that it is a bit unusual, which probably comes as a function of you not coming too much of a humanistic background, with many reads that are oriented towards economics, femininity/relationships, light, fantasy-adjacent stuff and EA/Rationalist things also thrown into the mixture.
My archeology of your reconstructed goodreads is mostly 32 snapshots. Sometimes, your reviews are inaccessible, but for a few of them there is a tumblr copy. The range covers 5 years, starting in October 2017 with Morocco-related books that were your intellectual preparation for a family trip there and ends in October 8th, 2022 with Any Given Tuesday, just about a month before the Alameda unravelling. I have three further snapshots of 'wanting to read' or 'reading' - I suspect it's more of the former, as their dates on inclusion are varied, but go from 2018 to 2020.
I have as yet to find a bad recommendation of yours, where by bad I'd mean something that I didn't enjoy or didn't learn interesting things from, but then again, I've been mostly playing it safe, with 5 and 4 star ratings. There are some I have no idea how I'm going to get my hands on (I presume The Erogamer and The Northern Caves were always in digital format?). Very few classics, too, except for mostly Jane Austen things. Others I think are probably well worth skipping, unless you were to appear and strongly suggest me otherwise (the Numair Chronicles, the ones and two stars, and probably most of the three stars, and stuff I can't really see myself warming up to, like the Osage and OJ Simpson murders, The Aimee Leduc investigations, Crazy Rich Asians, Song of the Lioness, The Shipping Man and Patti Hearst's bio), but that still leaves enough books that at my current reading rate (one Caroline recommendation per month), I will still have book reviews to post one or two years from now - in fact, they will relatively soon becoming my only posts left to write, as I count on running out of other tumblr texts of yours to comment in no more than a couple of months from now.
After the trial (and it seems like it's going to be a long, depressing wait of 5 months until sentencing), I imagine you are suffering through some sort of weird limbo, were you can't really do anything normal, like getting a job and moving on with your life. Perhaps this will give you time for some (marginal, given the Sword of Damocles) time for relaxing and reading. Unfortunately, whatever you choose remains unreachable, which is a pity, as reading what you are currently reading would be the best proxy to actually talking with you.

Reading is a conversation. All books talk. But a good book listens as well.
