It's another day of a quick dinner while updating my studyblr before I get ready for ballet and head out for dance. I feel like there is a lot going on this week. A look at my upcoming week: robotics course tomorrow, impromptu Girl Scouts meeting on Thursday for World Thinking Day (it's a homeschool troop, so we can meet during regular school hours for special meetings), I have a history project due on Saturday along with another cookie booth, plus I'm really amping up with my piano studies now to prepare for my practical and theory exams in May. I'm going to try to fit another hour of practice somewhere if I can, even if it is only one or two extra hours a week.
Tasks Completed:
Geometry - Reviewed Pythagorean theorem + learned about the distance formula + practice + learned about the midpoint formula + practice + honors work
Lit and Comp II - Reviewed Unit 16-18 vocabulary + read chapter 24 of Emma by Jane Austen + copied poetry terms + read examples of figurative language from Robert Frost's poems + read "The Swing" and noted poetic devices used + read about types of sentence structures + quiz (9/10)

Biology with Lab - Read about global warming + read about impact of global warming + watched part of a video about some scientists saying CO2 caused by global warming is politics and it's really from the sun's radiation in order to see another side of the global warming argument
Foundations - Read the definition of punctuality + played 5 minute mystery + learned about begging the question, appeal to nature, and anecdotal fallacies
Piano - 60-minute piano lesson + practiced for one hour

What I’m Grateful for Today:
I am grateful for an easy day of study despite a lot of copying work.
Quote of the Day:
Dreams are lovely but they are just dreams. Fleeting, ephemeral, pretty. But dreams do not come true just because you dream them. It’s hard work that makes things happen. It’s hard work that creates change.
-Shonda Rhimes

I think LOK's issue (or, one of the many) is that it seems to work smoothest when binge watching the seasons (doesn't improve the storytelling, but it IS a binge-watcher season style of storytelling) which is kinda fascinating when it came out just before the major boom in binge-streaming.
also I agree that a longer style would allow us to get and see things like how the water tribes have evolved, the state of fire nation technology and culture, and what everywhere that the gaang visited is like without the war. I remember being most excited to seeing how the world got to grow and heal after the war and then the series never did that.
Yes, and most importantly, bear in mind that the first season of Legend of Korra was supposed to be a stand-alone season. It was intended to be a one-shot series. They did not announce seasons 2-4 were green-lit until season 1 actually had a chance to start pulling in viewers, and for a while it almost didn't happen at all.
But they only had 12 episodes in which to establish an entire new generation, new technology, all of the "what happened after" stuff, establish whole new characters, and tell multiple storylines. Which left us getting Korra's introduction, her entire new friends group, the introductions of Bolin, Mako and Asami, supporting characters like Tenzin and Lin and the airbender family, a whole cultural anti-bending revolution, gang wars, an inner-city war, a whole sport, and a love rectangle shoved into 12 episodes. None of it ever has a chance to really be established, because you ping-pong back and forth between characters and plot points so fast you don't have a chance to. It's a classic case of too much, too fast.
But if the series had 20 episodes, some of this could be expanded on. How about some character development episodes for the brothers or Asami outside of their prescribed roles as "main character's crush," "girl keeping main character's crush from her," and "goofy comedy relief"? How about some episodes of the 4 of them interacting together for a more minor issue, or teaching each other things? How about exploring more of the cross-cultural aspects of the city, with mixed-blood families and all kinds of benders interacting? Build up these character relationships more, and not necessarily in the 'love rectangle' sense of the word. Let them learn things. Let them develop as characters outside the context of the main plot.
And that's not even getting into the stuff people REALLY wanted to see: what happened to their beloved characters from the OLD series!!! Where are Katara, Sokka, Toph, Suki, and Zuko??? What about other side characters????
Bearing in mind the rest of the 3 seasons have to sit on this hastily rushed cram-packed foundation means seasons 2-4 are also on pretty shaky footing. They didn't exactly leave themselves a lot to build on. Most notably with character development--which is again, something I think could really have been solved with a few extra character-centric episodes.
It led to some real problems with pacing and character development. ATLA is centered around Aang's journey to learn all 4 elements, when he's only starting with 1. It gave him 3 seasons to work with and 3 seasons to gradually get stronger. When we first meet Korra, on the other hand, she's already mastered most elements and is an absolute powerhouse. Once she learns Air, there's nowhere for her to really go--which might have been an okay premise in the context of a one-season series, but absolutely meant they ran into a wall with the seasons after.
Korra isn't the only one with this problem either. The writing team obviously wanted a firebender on hand as a starting friend, thus the introduction of Mako. But Mako already starts out (we're told, at least, in the promotional material) as a fire-bending prodigy who is already an expert with lightning. Which is cool until you realize he has nowhere to go, either. Mako never has any physical character development for improvements, and he doesn't have much personality development either, because he was only designed to be "team strong guy and hot dude who the main character crushes on."
At least Bolin got to learn Lava bending...many seasons later.
Korra had potential for sure. There were good concepts in that story. It was just so rushed that it felt like a conveyer belt through Major Plot Points, without really getting a chance to develop any of the characters outside of basic archetypes.

Friday 10 July 1840
[up at] 3 1/2
[to bed at] 11
fine morning – the haze just beginning to clear a little and the light getting sufficient to see now at 4 a.m. at which hour Reaumur 18 1/2 and Fahrenheit 73° – could not sleep on the large carpeted bois de lit with Ann – too hot – spread my burca on the floor and slept very well till Ann called me at 3 – at 4 1/4 called George to take the baggage – curious necessary
Tumblr media
wattled with rhododendron and spanish chesnut about 8 x 4 1/2 inside – with wattled (basket work) floor with a hole in it abut 20 x 16 inches rather nearer the back end of the place than the wattle door in the front end – on a slope, that front stands on the ground and back on poles 5 or 6 feet high – never saw such a place before – it is at the bottom of the little garden planted with cucumber or melon plants, and kidney beans – 10 bee-hives in hollowed lengths of trunks of trees set on the ground and about 4 feet high – a big stone set on the top – the house, too, is on sloping ground the front on a level with the ground the back on wood posts 6 feet high – I can walk upright with ease all along under the floors at the back of the house
Tumblr media
the ground is like that the foundation is a large beam all round on which the wood (boarded) frame of the house is set, and there is not much between the beam in front and the ground – a broad (called somewhere by Dubois abavent?) balcony goes all round the house – about 3 steps up in front to the door into the great centre room that we had – opposite to this an ashler sand stone chimney handsomely carved à la Turc that projects into the balcony behind the front being flush with the side of the room (this chimney the only stone work about the house unless there was another such chimney at each end of the house as I think[)] – looking towards our chimney close to it (right) a door opening onto the back balcony therefore this centre room a passage room and we had no quiet till 11 p.m. when the people went to bed – all our people slept in the front balcony and the horses pastured near in front – the prince himself and his family seem to live in the 2 ends one on each side the great centre room both of which open onto the balconies – tradition says that our family once inhabited Shibden the 2 gables in that way – probable – that accounts for the little old doorway and scraper I found from the north parlour into the upper buttery – the butteries were originally balcony and the door opened on to this balcony as last night at Satzēērĕ’h the place of prince Gheorghi Yorghi Kaidza – but this house is quite modern – he said he was in Russia (au service) when it was built or the door jambs and doors would not have been carved and shaped à la Turc – could not have been prettier – the kitchen with a blazing fire was a separate wood building at a little distance in front, and there were 2 or 3 other wood buildings, storehouse etc. very pretty picturesque place – the prince in a common dirty linen Persian coat, and dirty; and I should not have taken him for owner of the place but for his being evidently above all the rest – the women that we got a glimpse of and children much below the prince himself in appearance – I once thought of giving the servants a silver ruble among them – but nobody came to ask for anything – it seemed difficult to know to whom to give and I came away without giving anything – Off at 5 5/..  cross 2 or 3 little streams at intervals – not very far from the house – labyrinth of combs or little valleys closed in by conical topped wooded hills as yesterday – very beautiful – still pother about the baggage – get 10 minutes before it – Ann and I and George and cross river and stop just on the other side at 7 1/4 and here it is 12 versts from Satzēēréh and 30 versts from Chotévi – in 10 minutes espy our people going along poor looking road by-road-like on the other side the river – recross – at 7 25/.. – and at 7 33/.. open into large beautiful green grassy rock-crested cirque the top and rock beautifully but thinly wooded with pine (spruce fir or a sapin of some kind) the cirque called Nah-ké-rā-tăh the river Treeboul – it was hereabouts we should have breakfasted had I not wished to reach Chotévi tonight, and to get on as far as we could in the cool – the cirque very fine – its green sides like a beautiful sheep-walk – its bold torn pine sprinkled crest of rock very striking and picturesque – begin the ascent at 8 – the last bit of road bad – but here it is evident that the road has recently been made good as it is – it is a very good horse-road – towards the latter part of the ascent it is a zigzag – Dubois would with reason call this cirque one of the parois of an immense crater full of undulations beautiful rounded thickly wooded hills and little valleys – and a fine view down the long winding beautiful valley along which we have come – at 8 33/.. alight at a ‘source’ a good run of good water cold – fill our bottles and dawdle about this 10 minutes – they are clearing away the wood just here for a few little plots for cultivation – from soon after here the zigzags up the grassy rhododendron hill – very beautiful wooded undulating Aetna of a crater – all the hills covered with rhododendron oak, Spanish chesnut, beech, elm and hornbeam and some very fine trees of all these kinds – near houses (as last night) and this morning along the valley here and there some magnificent limes – the largest and finest I ever saw? near the top of the col 3 or 4 men widening and making the road good – at the top at 9 35/.. magnificent view towards Imérétie over crater and our long winding valley of this morning – on entering the Ratcha a magnificent narrow richly and picturesquely wooded gorge – dismounted at the top and walked down and let my horse down to the river – the road very bad – the bad begins with the descent begins at the top for the top is a mere ridge, and continues till the wood bridge over the river at 10, and here the road has evidently been recently made and is in progress – at 10 10/.. Adam said we had 4 versts to go before stopping – Ann tired – weakened by her bowel complaint yesterday and last night and this morning – and very anxious to stop – at 10 25/.. another wood bridge over river and 3 or 4 bridges almost immediately afterwards at short inthervals /intervals/ over swampy ground – passed 34 men at work on this road I think between the 1st and 2nd bridge (i.e. from 10 to 10 25/..)
– at 10 3/4 stopt at a pool of excellent water George saying it was our halting place – no! nothing for the horses – Ann impatient to go on or stop – at 11 5/.. think to stop – good grass – but a man watching it, and refused us – 10 minutes after at 11 1/4 stop – dismount – good enough grass – a woodman and his cart and a fire think to have the kettle boiled for Ann – no water – the river at some little distance – remount in despair – ride down to a herd of cattle and the river Chăh-ōw-ry̌ - cross it – and at last halt at 11 40/.. – we were at breakfast in less than 10 minutes – Adam had sought for 2 eggs all along this morning – went to almost every little cottage or farm house we passed – could only get one egg – Ann had this beaten up with some last night’s wine, and ate a little bit of barley cake of last night and the remainder except the large dace 6 or 7 of our little fish – she then lay down and slept till 3 1/4, and seems now pretty well – I had the barley bread and part of the cheese, and some butter and a cucumber (we had no cold tea) and water and lastly one glass with a little noyau in it – breakfast over at 12 1/2 – then I lay down and slept till 1 – but too hot for me to sleep – then till now 3 25/.. wrote all but the 1st 3 1/2 lines of today – Reaumur 26 1/2° and Fahrenheit 89 1/2° at 3 25/.. in my bag well covered up but a little sun caught upon the bag – Reaumur 25 1/2 and Fahrenheit 87° in the shade where I am sitting now at 3 3/4 – the descent this morning very beautiful – the fine woods of oak, Spanish chesnut, beech and elm alder near the stream beautifully sprinkled with sapins (spruce-like firs) some of the largest I have ever seen – some magnificent trees – and some ditto ditto oak and beech and some fine Spanish chesnuts and a few elms of extra size   this beautiful forest all along the fine gorge fringed with sweet bay and common laurel the bright shining green that nothing can exceed, and rhododendron ponticum in full flower – patches of it here and there on the rocks like lilack carpets scattered up and down – now at 3 3/4 (I had left a blank for the last state of Reaumur and Fahrenheit) ordered the horses and put up my things – we are an hour they say from Khotévi
– off at 4 1/2 – at 5 7/.. alight at the monastery (church) of Nikortsminda (vide Dubois ii. 383 et sequentes) the village scattered at a little distance pretty and picturesque and the thin board weathered roofs with stones on them (to weight them down) reminded me of Switzerland – here the valley opened out a little a pretty green grassy corny liveable spot rather in the style of Bagnères de Bigorre till here astonishing at seeing so few cottages or hamlets – merely 3 or 4 houses together now and there and those so hid among orchards or wood, that one scarcely perceived them – several I should not have observed at all had not Adam turned up the little paths at intervals during the morning seeking eggs – and he could only get one before breakfast and 2 in all Khotévi capital of the Ratcha yesterday evening! – one misses the picturesque Swiss villages cottages chalets to relieve the beauty of the valleys here – the church of Nikortsminda dedicated to St. Nicholas (of whom a pleasing picture in the church) very pretty and singular – the interior covered with paintings in fresco consists as it were
Tumblr media
of ten vaults, the dome (12 windows) springing from 6 of them (the vaults) – I have made my diagram too oblong – I think the church is a square – the 3 projections North South and West are as many porches accollées, built up against the church, but apparently of the same antiquity – the effect of the dome standing on 6 arcades (2 on each side and one at each end) is very striking and pretty and only rather spoilt by the iconostase blocking the choeur and 2 sacristies – the North and South sides exterior are striking on account of the 3 fausses arcades not being symmetrical
Tumblr media
the east end is also finished in 3 fausses arcades regular the centre in the centre, and the largest, the carving and mouldings and cornices the richest and best done we have seen – vide Dubois – vide page 384. I did not observe the Christ on the South front à ‘grande main don’t les doigts replies en forme de benediction rappellent le grand schisme’ between Greek and Latin churches (the filioque) – gave our monk a ./30 silver piece – he looked at it – turned it over – said nothing – satisfied? this church belongs to the archbishop at and of Koutaïs who was here first and often comes – en route again at 5 53/.. – pretty ride chiefly down hill to the stream, river (insignificant) – crossed it, up hill to our quarters, arrived at 6 52/.. a white house the whole rez de chaussée one open stable – terribly dirty – a man partly swept it with a long whisk on our entering – one good sized (about 6 1/2 x 6 1/2 yards, dome-ceiling) room with 3 windows and a small room also with 3 windows at the end, and 2 small rooms at the back opening into our large room – but gave these to our people (George Cossack Adam and the Jew) and made them enter at one of their windows – we are glazed with white paper (several squares torn) 2 windows salon and 1 in the small room, the rest wooden shutters – 2 large tables rickety, but mean to sleep on them – one long bench – 2 smaller, and a sort of stool and a little low table – we are magnificently meublé – not far from us is another house about as good looking as our own with a large covered gallery abavent in front – and there may be 2 or 3 more houses as good on the other side the hill – the little poor church is a little way below us barnlike – 2 gable ends like the old churches near Aténi but rather larger and the facing stones larger and handsomer and regular ashler as to look outside – close to us at a few yards (20 ro 30) distance one or 2 small low houses and a kitchen – we are very well off – the old ruined castle on one isolated hill higher up the valley 1/2 verst or more? From us – the town is partly on this side the valley and partly on the other – very pretty – the high mountains close in the valley in the distance very finely to the north west – but only partly seen – the rest hid in clouds – tea at 8 10/.. – Ann had the 2 eggs Adam got of a friend of his by favour this evening (a dyer) at Nikortsminda – not one to be had here – Ann had still her bowel complaint poorly and out of sorts – I had boiled rice and the barley bread and cheese of last night and butter – Reaumur 20° and Fahrenheit 77° now at 10 55/.. at my bed (table) head – ordered horses for 9 in the morning – no pasturage near here – obliged to take them to where we breakfasted yesterday i.e. 1 37/.. hour distance –

What Does the Bible Say about the Creation of the Universe?
What Does the Bible Say About the Creation of the Universe?

Introduction
The Apostle Paul writes in Romans 1:20:
For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse
Paul affirms that we can know that there was a creation, thus a creator, by looking at the universe and world around us.
We can find evidence of the creation by looking around (and within) us. But, we can only learn who the Creator is by reading the Bible which was handed down by the Creator. What does the Bible say about the creation? There are many references to creation found throughout the Bible. For example, the passages cited earlier (Rom. 1:20) is found in the New Testament, centuries after the "Genesis account." Let us consider some of the many references to the creation found in the Bible.
Old Testament References to the Creation
The first mention of the creation is not in Genesis 1, by Job, who lived long before Moses (See Eric Lyons, The Historicity of Job). God came to Job after his long discussions with his four friends about losing his family and health. He tells him in Job 40:15, "Behold now behemoth, which I made with thee; he eateth grass as an ox." Whatever this animal is, or was, we do not know, but it is described in Job 40:15-24), The point is this huge beast "is the chief of the ways of God: he that made him" (Job 40:19). Jehovah continues with a discussion of the Leviathan.(Thayer comments on this creature described in Job 41:1-34), God says, "Everything under heaven is Mine" (Job 41:11).
The Lord asks Job in Job 38:4, "Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding."
The most well-known Old Testament passage is Genesis 1:1-2:25. The Bible begins with the words, "In the beginning God created the Heavens and the earth" (Gen 1:1). The author, Moses, continues with a day-by-day description of the six days of creation, culminating with the creation of man on the sixth day. He rested from the work of creation on the seventh day. Genesis 2, gives us a detailed account of the creation of man that took place on the sixth day of creation (Gen. 1:26-30). Having described in a general way the creation of all living things in Chapter 1, Moses turns specifically to God's favorite creation, man. He created him in His own image, breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and he became a "living soul" (Gen. 2:7).
God sets forth the meaning of the six days of creation in Exodus 20:8-11. He says in Exodus 20:11:
For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day and made it holy.
Genesis 1 describes the days of the Creation. Before each day of creation, we find the words, "On the first day..." After each description of each "day" of creation, Moses records the words, "And the evening and the morning were the first day" (and second through sixth days likewise). "Day," first found in Genesis 1:5, is from the Hebrew word, yom. According to Strong, the word means, day."
It can also mean, day, time", and "year," according to Brown, Driver, and Briggs.
However, when the word is used with a number in non-prophetical literature, as it is in Genesis 1, it always means a literal, twenty-four-hour period (Kyle Butt, The "Days" Of Creation).
Further, the meaning of the word, translated, as "day," in Genesis 1, is clear from the fact that the writer describes each day as comprising an "evening and a morning" (Genesis 1:5, 8, 13, 19, 23, 31). Under the Jewish calendar, days began in the evening and ended at the beginning of the following evening. So, a twenty-four-hour day was comprised of an "evening and a morning." There should be no doubt, then, that the writer of Genesis wanted us to understand that God created the Universe in six literal twenty-four-hour days.
Jesus' Teaching on the Creation of Man
When Did Jesus Teach that Man first existed as man? Moses writes, "In the beginning God created the Heavens and the earth" (Genesis 1:1). That Moses wrote that God created the heavens and the earth, in the beginning, is important. Please read Mark 10:2-12). Jesus said in Mark 10:6, "But from the beginning of creation, God MADE THEM MALE AND FEMALE." Mark (Mark 10:6) and Matthew (Matt. 19:4-5) also record Jesus' words on this point.
Moses writes in Genesis 1:27, "God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them." So, Jesus taught that we were "male and female" from the "beginning," and did not become so after millions of years of evolution!
The Prophet's First Existence
Jesus said in Luke 11:49-51:
For this reason also the wisdom of God said, 'I will send to them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will kill and some they will persecute, so that the blood of all the prophets, shed since the foundation of the world, may be charged against this generation, from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who was killed between the altar and the house of God; yes, I tell you, it shall be charged against this generation.
Moses recorded the killing of Abel in Genesis 4:1-8. Moses clearly reveals that Abel, Adam, and Eve's second son, was murdered by his older brother, Cain.
So, Jesus teaches that Abel, who existed "from the foundation of the world," was the first prophet whose blood was "shed."
Jesus said that Satan "was a murderer from the beginning" (John 8:44) So, as he had done with Eve in Genesis 3, Satan tempted Cain in Genesis 4, and he committed the first murder. All of this happened "from the beginning" (John 8:44), and "from the foundation of the world" (Luke 11:50), not billions of years after the beginning of the world.
Conclusion
Jesus spoke of the existence of man "from the beginning," and "from the foundation of the world." Thus, it is clear that he considered the world as what creation scientists today would call a "young earth," not what evolutionist scientists would call an "old earth."
Jesus did not teach that life came into existence billions of years after the Universe was created, and that, over millions of years, man evolved into what evolutionary scientists would call, "modern man," or "homo sapiens". He taught that man has existed since the beginning.

What is NFT art, how does it function, and what does it signify for the creative sector?
if you haven't yet known about NFT's or NFT craftsmanship, I propose investigating your wireless association. In the last 4-5 months, NFT talk has in a real sense broken the web. From stages like TikTok and Twitter to CNN News, the moving point has left millions pondering, what is it and how might it function for me?
Its new ascent in fame has vowed to upset the imaginative business. As a visual originator and craftsman, I'm here to inquire, "How might this benefit me?" Let's start with a definition.
 What is NFT workmanship?
A NFT is a computerized resource that exists totally in the computerized universe — you can't contact it, however you can possess it. A NFT can be any kind of computerized document: a work of art, an article, music or even an image, for example, "Fiasco Girl", the first photograph of which sold for $500k recently.
NFT means 'Non Fungible Token', however what's the significance here? Indeed, it serves to initially comprehend what a 'Fungible Token' is. In the event that we think about it regarding cash: a 100 dollar greenback can be traded for five 20 dollar notes nevertheless hold a similar worth, and that implies a 100 dollar note is a fungible token.
Space Man with rocks and precious stones jutting out of him on red and blue lit foundation
A detail from Beeple's "Everydays — The First 5000 Days," a montage of computerized pictures that was "printed" as a "nonfungible token" (NFT) and sold for $69.3 million.
On the off chance that this 100 dollar note is endorsed by Banksy, it turns into an absolutely remarkable item. Its worth is then a lot harder to decide, as it's as of now not just worth five 20 dollar greenbacks. This implies a Non Fungible Token can't be traded for any comparable worth. It additionally intends that, similar to any venture, its worth can increment or abatement in the future relying upon the conditions.
What we're especially inspired by is: how might this new, advanced method for selling craftsmanship influence makers and the innovative business?
How might NFTs affect makers?
1. Responsibility for craftsmanship
Before the presence of Cryptocurrency, we never truly got to claim something totally advanced. We passed around recordings and movement illustrations, reusing and reposting them, however there wasn't this ongoing chance to expect total, substantial responsibility for advanced document or craftsmanship consequently. The ascent of NFT's progressions this, permitting makers the position to lease advanced works of art out, to sell them or show them how they wish.
To sell them, creators need to get some sort of 'legitimate' responsibility for work. In this way, after NFT craftsmanship is made, it's 'stamped' or tokenized on the digital money administration, Blockchain. The Blockchain is a computerized exchange framework that records data such that makes it undeniably challenging to hack or trick, and that implies it's very valuable for following copyright possession and keeping up with records of creation. Hypothetically, any advanced work of art you make and mint will lead exclusively to you.
How might NFTs affect makers?
Step by step instructions to really make a NFT
The main thing originators need to do as they would prefer to setting up a NFT to sell is make a "Crypto Wallet". This will store the Ethereum, which you should pay the stamping expenses. Then you should interface your Crypto Wallet to one of the NFT commercial centers.
NFT commercial centers permit fashioners and craftsmen to transfer their computerized fine art and show it available to be purchased online as a NFT. You can envision them to be like Ebay or Etsy — aside from they're only for NFTs! The most famous ones include: Rarible, OpenSea, Mintable, KnownOrigin and SuperRare.
One thing to remember while transferring your fine arts onto these is the number of you will give. You can decide to put it on as 1 of 1, significance there may be one craftsmanship to exist and be sold, or you could choose to transfer an assortment of the work of art with various duplicates. This is a seriously immense choice to make in light of the fact that — like conventional works of art — the quantity of unique releases and what uncommon a piece is will straightforwardly mean for its worth

Happy Holidays - BTS Style
Tumblr media Tumblr media
4. “It’s not much, but it’s ours.”
20. “Merry Christmas, bub.”
Pairing: Jin x reader
You spent the holidays much like everyone else: tuning in to watch BTS perform. However there was one obvious distinction.
You had married Kim Seokjin 8 months ago.
It was the classic friends to lovers story; you’d met Seokjin through your friend Moonbyul (yes, the famous one), and hit it off. A year later had Jin confessing to you right before he left on tour, leaving you to dwell on the experience for nearly four months before Jin came back to Seoul.
After you gave him a piece of your mind (you were seriously mad that he confessed then left), you were able to tell him that you’d harbored feelings for him for a while already.
That was nearly three years ago. What ensued was an extravagant game of hide and seek from the prying eyes of the media, followed by an earth-shaking v-live in which Jin slipped up and mentioned having a girlfriend.
Just when you were sure life couldn’t get any crazier or better, Jin proposed. You had choked on your own spit when he got down on one knee; a fact he will never let you live down.
And now, 8 months later, you were reminiscing on all your memories together and realized that there was one gaping hole in your story.
The two of you have done almost everything together. Everything, except for perhaps the most wanted thing.
You have yet to spend the holidays with Jin. When you were first dating, it made sense. You weren’t serious enough to spend the holidays together outside of exchanging some gifts. Now, judging from the ring on your finger, you’d say the relationship is fairly serious. It would be nice to spend Christmas morning with the person you love most in the world. However, you understand that there are many more people who need to spend time with him and the rest of BTS, even if it’s just by tuning into the TV.
That’s exactly what your plan is this year. Packing up the rest of your bag, you make sure to lock the key to your little apartment before heading out. As usual, a couple of suspicious looking people are strolling about outside your apartment. A couple raise their phones and try to look like they’re not taking pictures of you, but you know better. It was all too easy for Dispatch to find out where you and Jin were living despite the heavy security.
Jin left yesterday morning, the two of your exchanging gifts before the sun even came up. You were still half asleep but your were coherent enough to be sad that you weren’t going to see him for the next couple of weeks.
He had joked about sneaking you into the New Year’s Eve party that they would be broadcasting just so you guys could sneak a kiss. You had just rolled your eyes and told him you’d give Tuck, your dog, a kiss instead.
The traffic isn’t that bad, considering that it’s Christmas Eve. By the time you make it to your parent’s house out on the edge of Seoul, night has already fallen and there’s plenty of cars outside the house. It looks like the party is already in full swing.
“You’re home!” Your mother opens the door before you can even get to it, smiling broadly. “Come in, come in! How are you?”
You smile back at her, instantly feeling better. “I’m great, mom. How’s the party going?”
“Oh, it’s great. Your little brother brought his girlfriend over, you have to meet her!”
You laugh, heading to your childhood bedroom to drop your things off. “I’ll be out in just a second.”
The evening passes in a blur of niceties and good food, your family double checking to see what time the boys will be performing in the morning. Your brother’s girlfriend is sweet, the two of you get along well.
You’re in the kitchen helping your father with the dishes when he nudges you.
“You remember grandpa’s old cottage?”
“Yeah, what about it?”
Your grandpa had a cute little cottage just a little ways down the mountain, the foundation still strong but it had long fallen into disuse. You and your brother used to go there when you were kids; it was the perfect place to stay when you went on fishing trips.
“I’ve had a friend come look at it, he’s been repairing it. What do you say we go take a look at it?”
Looking around at the party that’s still ongoing, you shrug. “Sure, sounds fun. Let me grab my coat.”
A few minutes later your father stops the truck outside the cottage, the entire place lit up with golden Christmas lights. Your mouth drops open as you look at the little house; it’s beautiful. Almost unrecognizable.
“Wow,” you breathe out. “It’s amazing!” Jumping out of the car, you make a beeline for the cottage only to turn back and see your father still in the car. “Aren’t you coming?”
He rolls down the window. “I’ll be out in a second, I’ve just got to return this call.” When he sees you hesitating to go in without him, he waves you on. “Go inside, look around.”
Turning back to the cottage, you look down at the newly laid cobble stone path peeking up at you from the snow. The cottage is as pretty as a painting, lighting up the thick foliage that stands guard.
The door doesn’t even creak when you open it. “Hello?” You call out. The lights are all on, the guy who repaired it must be in here.
Stepping inside, you marvel at the interior. It still looks like the cottage you loved to play in as a child, but it’s more elegant now. A great big Christmas tree stands tall in the middle of the room, big red ornaments adorning the surface.
“How does it look?”
Whirling around at the sound of a familiar voice, your jaw drops as Jin emerges from the kitchen. He smiles at you, watching the confusion grow on your face.
“What...what are you doing here?”
He gestures to the tree. “Just putting the finishing touches together.”
Staring at him, you slowly begin to connect the dots. “Wait, you’re the friend that repaired it?”
Jin nods, smiling softly. “Can I show you around?”
Gently taking his extended hand, Jin takes you from room to room, showing off the beautiful interior design and going so far as to show you the tall oak beams he installed in the foyer for extra support.
The two of you end up in the kitchen, where Jin breaks out the apple cider.
“How are you even here right now?” You ask, staring up at your husband as he blushes under your attention. Even after all these years, his ears still go a little red when you’re completely focused on him.
Jin shrugs. “I managed to convince some people that my performance will be much better tomorrow morning if I could spend Christmas Eve with my wife. I have to go back soon, but I’ve got some time.” He gives you an uncertain look. “I...I got this as your Christmas present, darling.”
It takes you a moment to understand what he’s saying. “The cottage?”
He nods. “I talked with your father, he was planning on just selling the property. You told me how much you loved coming here when you were a kid...I thought that it might be nice to pass it down to you, you know? And this can be our little secret out here, nobody will even know about it.”
You can’t help staring at him in complete shock. “You...you did all of this for me?”
Jin tilts his head, a curious smile painting his features. “Of course I did. I love you.” Scratching the back of his neck, he looks around the kitchen. “It’s not much, but it’s ours.”
Setting your mug on the counter, you throw myself into his arms, burying your face in his sweater as Jin’s laugh rumbles through his chest. “It’s everything, Jin. Thank you.” You squeeze him tighter for emphasis. “I love you.”
Kissing the top of your head, Jin checks the time.
Midnight.
Tilting your chin up, he plants a soft kiss on your lips that has you closing your eyes and remembering every kiss that came before it.
Holding you close, Jin rests his cheek atop your head and hums out a tune, the two of you swaying back and forth.
“Merry Christmas bub,” he whispers into the quiet of the cottage. Even though it’s nearly tearing his heart apart to know that he’ll have to leave soon, he can finally cross one thing off his bucket list.
Spending a little bit of Christmas with you.

Rise of Sixteen States: 306
Li Xiong declares himself Emperor of Cheng.
Meanwhile Sima Yue wins the Jin civil war, and the Jin emperor dies.

5th Month, renchen [4 June], Qi Hong and others fought with Diao Mo. Mo was greatly defeated. Yong and Ying ran for the Southern Mountains, and fled to Wan. The Xianbei in Hong and others' section greatly plundered Chang'an, killing more than 20 000 people.
6th Month, bingchen [28 June], New Moon, [the Emperor] arrived from Chang'an and ascended the old hall, with mournful emotion and flowing tears
Winter, 10th Month [22 November – 21 December], the Minister of Works, the King of Fanyang, Xiao, passed a away. Xiao's Senior Clerk, Liu Yu, murdered the King of Chengdu, Ying.
11th Month, gengwu [8 January], the Emperor collapsed in the Xianyang Hall. At the time he was 48 years old.
(Liu Yuan)
3rd Year of Yuanxi [306 AD], Winter, 12th Month [1 January 306 – 30 January], used his General of the Van, Liu Jing as Envoy Holding Tally, Great Chief Controller of Conquering and Chastising. He intercepted and struck the Inspector of Bing province, Liu Kun, at Banqiao [“Ban Bridge”], and was defeated by Kun. Kun thereupon occupied Jinyang. His Palace Attendant Liu Yin and Brilliantly Blessed Grandee of the Right Wang Yu advanced to admonished Yuan, saying:
Your Highness, since [you] raised troops and onwards, bit by bit there has already been a single cycle, yet [we have] solely defended merely a region, the kingly power is not yet shaking. If indeed [you] were able to instruct the generals to set out in four directions and determine the moment with a single throw, to put on display Liu Kun's head, settle East of the He, establish the title of Emperor, strike the drums to march and go south, overcome Chang'an then make the capital there, and use the multitudes of Guanzhong to roll up Luoyang, is like pointing to your palm, that is all. These were means by which August Emperor Gao created and began the vast foundation, overcoming and exterminating strong Chu.
Yuan was pleased and said:
This is in an Orphan's heart.
Yuan advanced to occupy Hedong. He attacked and robbed Puban and Pingyang, both were lost to him. Yuan thereupon entered to have his capital at Puzi. The counties, ramparts and fortifactions belonging to Hedong and Pingyang fully surrendered.
(WS001 & WS095: 11th Year [305 AD], Liu Yuan attacked Sima Teng. Teng again begged for troops. Emperor Huan [Tuoba Yitou] personally led 10 000 light cavalry to save Teng, he beheaded Yuan's general Qiwu Tun. Yuan fled south to Puzi.)
(JS062: Liu Yuan at the time was at Lishi, the distance between them was more or less 300 li Kun secretly dispatched to go among the assorted miscreants of his section. The surrendered were more than 10 000 groups. Yuan was very much afraid. He thereupon walled Puzi and settled there.)
Tumblr media
(Li Xiong)
1st Year of Yanping [“Cloudless Peace”], 3rd Month [31 March – 29 April], Fan Changsheng drove in a plain cart to go to Chengdu from Xishan [lit. “Western Mountain”]. Xiong welcomed him at the great gate, held an official's tablet and led him in to sit. Changsheng requested Xiong sit face to face. Then he was designated Imperial Chancellor and was venerated as Fan the Worthy. Changsheng urged Xiong to declare the venerated title.
His junior cousin Zhi was Liu's son. Since he did not accompany the ranked order, he executed him.
Summer, 6th Month [28 June – 26 July], Xiong hence presumptuously acceded to the Emperor's throne. A great amnesty, and changed the year [to Yanping]. The state was titled Great Cheng. He retroactively venerated his father Te as the Luminous [jing] Emperor, with the temple title First Founder [shizu]. His mother, Ms. Luo, became August Empress Dowager.
(JS004: 2ndYear [of Yongxing], … 6th Month [8 July – 6 August 305], … Li Xiong presumptuously acceded to the Emperor's throne, the state was titled Shu. … 8th Month [5 September – 4 October 305], Li Xiong dispatched his general Li Xiang# to rob Han'an.)
(Since other sources agree that Li Xiong declared himself emperor in 306, JS004 appear to be mistaken in placing it in the year before, in 305. Li Xiang#'s attack on Han'an is not recorded in other sources, so it is unclear if this event should then also be moved to 306, 8thMonth [26 August – 23 September 306].)
10thMonth[22 November – 21 December], added to Fan Changsheng to be Grand Teacher of Heaven and Earth (HYGZ: Grand Teacher of the Four Seasons, the Eight Nodes, Heaven and Earth), ennobled Marquis of Xishan (WS: King of Xishan). Also his private retinue was not to prepare for army campaigns, and their taxes and levies were all to enter his household.
(HYGZ: [Fan] the Worthy's name was Changsheng [“Long Life”], one name him Yanjia [“Lengthy-lasting”], and also name him Jiuzhong [“Nine-Doubled”]. One calls him Zhi, courtesy name Yuan. He was a native of Danxing in Fuling.)
(The “Eight Nodes” of the year were the equinoxes, the solstices, and the beginning of each season.)
Xiong at the time had roughly began to establish a state, and habitually had no laws or systems. The various generals put their confidence in his graciousness, and each contended for the distributed ranks. His Prefect of the Masters of Writing, Yan Shi, sent up a missive, saying:
In all cases when making a state's regulations and laws, it is always best to continue the old. In the former affairs of Han and Jin, only the Grand Commandant and the Great Marshal managed troops. The Grand Tutor and Grand Guardian were offices for a father or older brother, posts for discussing the Way. The Minister over the Masses and the Minister of Works were in charge of the five teachings and the proportions of the nine soils. Qin set up the Imperial Chancellor with overall leadership of the ten thousand moments. At the end of Wu of Han, he went beyond to use the Great General to control government affairs.
Now state and patrimony are just now founded, and all the hundred are not yet ready. When the various excellencies and great generals are distributed rank proportionally, they yield and then warily request to arrange and set up. This and the standards of the past odes do not correspond, [we] should establish rules and norms to use as models and systems.
Xiong followed him.

(Zhang Gui)
1st Year of Guanxi [306 AD], Emperor Hui collapsed. He dispatched Senior Clerk Beigong Chun, Marshal Zhang Zuan, Separate Carriage Yin Jian to offer a petition at the Imperial Capital.
That Year, he greatly walled Guzang. Its walls had originally been built by the Xiongnu, south to north they were 7 li and east to west 3 li long. The ground had a dragon-like shape, and for that reason it was named Wolong [“Sleeping Dragon”] City.
Earlier, at the end of Han, the Broad Scholar Hou Jin of Dunhuang spoke to the people of his group, saying:
Later, the spring water west of the city will dry up, and there will be a pair of watch towers erected on its bank, they and the eastern gate will gaze on each other. From their middle there will be a hegemon setting out.
Arriving at the middle of Wei's Jiaping era [249 – 253], the commandery officials indeed erected a school building, and built a pair of watch towers beside the spring. They and the eastern gates actually gazed on each other.
Also there was a guest who appraised [his?] seal and said:
Fortune will transmit to the sons and grandsons, and the oldest will have the Western Xia. When the Passes and Luo are overturned and lost, the lands of Liang alone will be kept whole.
Reaching this point, the Zhang clan thereupon were hegemons in Hexi [“West of the He”].

Repo! The Corona Opera
For every rotation that Earth has completed around the sun since the dawn of humanity, humans have created art to cope with the realities surrounding our everyday life. We weave stories in songs, movies, plays, books, paintings, and so forth, that help digest the world around us and provide an entertaining escape from the cruelties we endure. Some stories take place in abstract universes or in the future, and we rely on what we know in our present reality to build upon these fantasy societies. My favorite movie, Repo! the Genetic Opera, certainly makes this list. We are currently experiencing perhaps the most surreal year of our collective lives, and with each passing day I argue that we find ourselves closer to the world crafted in Repo. I have seen this movie, at least 20 times. If you haven't watched Repo! the Genetic Opera or you haven't seen it in a while, I recommend giving it a view. The movie is unique in that it falls under three distinct genres: musical, horror, and sci-fi. And while the jury is out on whether our future society is going to go full on gothic aesthetic, I can say that the Repo! movie experience offers a glimpse into a dystopian fascist post-plague world wrapped in unapologetically hilarity with a heaping side of camp. It doesn't offer any spiritual cleansing that our souls collectively need, but it does show us what a new normal could look like if we really go off the rails.
As things stand, right now, so much of our daily lives and culture are impacted by the coronavirus. All of our institutions have been impacted, from school, to work, to family, to the way we interact with strangers, and especially our economy. We have all felt the effects in one way or another, and honestly? Most the impacts are of our own undoing, for better or for worse. I am going to write three pieces analyzing Repo! the Genetic Opera. First I will create the foundations that bridge our contemporary life and the world of Repo! Second I will explain how the Repo! universe operates under the definitions of fascism. And third I will weave together parts one and two into our contemporary world (particularly in the context of the United States) to highlight the dark path we heading towards. My viewpoints are of mine, and my own alone. Let's dive into part one.
Part I Repo! the Genetic Opera takes place in the year 2056. Humanity was on the brink of collapse as a result of a medical crisis that caused massive organ failure.
Tumblr media
I never gave the premise much thought, at least not until recently. We aren't given much detail beyond the fact that entrepreneur Rottissimo "Rotti" Largo solved this crisis through his company GeneCo. GeneCo provides organ transplants that can be repaid through a payment plan. Witnessing the coronavirus unfold in real time and seeing its wrath, particularly on severe cases, honestly makes me wonder if the writers had some sort of "super plague" in mind when creating this universe. For the purpose of this analysis, I will assume that humanity suffered at least one infectious disease crisis. And just to reiterate covid-19 particularly, we really *don't* know what it's going to do to us long-term. Let the parallels begin.
The world in Repo! the Genetic Opera, operates as normally as the citizens possibly can, which appears to be quite limited. I have noted how dated some the technologies look.
Tumblr media
For a world 30 years in the future, it lacks cell phones and easy access to internet. When we enter Shilo's world (aka her bedroom!) she watched Blind Mag sing on a busted up tiny ass TV and the program itself looks like an ad on Home Shopping Network.
Tumblr media
The Graverobber is shown reading headlines on a newspaper. The news reporters shown in the ribbon cutting ceremony during the 1st Italian Post-Plague Renaissance have old school cameras with flashbulbs.
Tumblr media
The most contemporary technology appears to be a Wish.com version of an Apple watch, and even that looks like a leftover prop from Spy Kids.
Tumblr media
Obviously the people who made this movie intentionally inserted these anachronisms, but why? This is a science fiction movie after all. I speculate that they reverted back because the impact from humanity's crisis resulted in an overall professional "brain drain" from the sheer volume of professionals that dropped dead. In fact every scene depicting medical procedures looks dimly lit and lacking in sanitation. We will see this as we struggle to contain the coronavirus, at least in America. Healthcare workers have already died from this thing, and I am sure many prospective college students will have second thoughts about a career in healthcare. I mean hell, look at no other than GeneCo itself. That company employs workers called "Genterns" who are most definitely not in full PPE. I don't doubt their medical expertise, but they appear to be disposable (please see: that time Luigi killed one for NO REASON in "Mark it Up").
Tumblr media
On that note, it really was quite incredible how China built the pop-up hospital in Wuhan in under 4 days, but it was also not the most safe or structurally sound building by far (it collapsed, people were hurt!). Maybe at this point, the people in Repo! don't have much of a choice. I am sure there were likely legit hospitals, but the fact that the Renaissance had gross surgery tents is a bit unsettling.
Tumblr media
This is a world that is completely built upon the social more of valuing your health above all else. There had to be a turning point in the GeneCo business model where they really played on up-selling organs for the benefit of "genetic perfection". "I needed a kidney transplant desperately. GeneCo showed this single mom sympathy. This makeover came for a small added fee. Now I look smashing on live TV!" Imagine signing the documents for your power of attorney while actively going into renal failure, when your doctor chimes in with an up-sell for breast implants. When all is said an done, your body is now not only functioning again, but you're hot! Even in a post-plague dystopia we are still holding value to having a nice rack. What's not to love about GeneCo? Obviously we know right away that GeneCo has a dirty side. Rotti Largo personally lobbied to make organ repossessions legal, and he does not hesitate to recollect his property. The concept itself is, of course, wild. In America, our healthcare system is incredibly broken and expensive.  You would wonder how it could get worse without us backpedaling many steps on the industrialization timeline. And in a lot of ways, I could see a company like GeneCo thrive here. We already hate the poor, and we have political think tanks that salivate over the idea of cutting social programs that keep people alive. Our president has wanted to repeal the Affordable Care Act while many people are unemployed during a pandemic. In Repo! we hear about those who don't pay, but obviously there are plenty of people who do. Those who can will happily pay, either for vanity reasons or to stay alive.
Tumblr media
And while society cites Rotti as being a "hero" for humanity, we see more and more evidence that the crisis is both not under control and life is cheap.
His son murders multiple people, in front of others, with seemingly no repercussions. In the scene where Shilo meets the Graverobber for the first time, adjacent to the graveyard and tombs owned by wealthy families who could afford grave markers, lies a poorly constructed wall hiding thousands of corpses piled on top of one another. We even get a glimpse of a truckload pouring more onto the pile. I would not be surprised if there is a disinformation campaign there keeping the public in the dark (although you'd think the smell would be unbearable at this point).
Tumblr media
There are multiple indications that propaganda works in society (still), and no one is getting the full picture of how much of a raw deal the people in Repo! have. We see poster after poster about GeneCo, in the literal absence of other corporations.
Tumblr media
And a lot of them bear resemblance to 20th century Russian propaganda. It would be a real shame if the goals outlined The Foundations of Geopolitics: The Geopolitical Future of Russia were actually realized. Imagine going to visit your mother's grave and hearing commercials for hardcore analgesics play through the cemetery. Also, there's a police presence too. Apparently the police are called Genecops and have authority to execute any assumed graverobbers on site.
Tumblr media
Imagine the hellscape it would be to live in a world where your loved ones may have died from a terrible pandemic, and you face a non-zero chance of an over zealous cop murdering you thereafter, and because their qualified immunity bypasses the judicial system entirely...oh wait. Anyways let's circle back to the Graverobber character.
Tumblr media
Graverobber's role in Repo! appears to be minor on the surface. Rotti's daughter, Amber Sweet, appears to almost despise her relationship with him. And that relationship involves him supplying Amber with what he describes as the "21st Century cure". This cure you ask? A super effective painkiller with the clinical use to accompany GeneCo surgeries. This drug is called Zydrate, and it has a street version that he acquires and sells, with clients including Amber Sweet.
Tumblr media
Graverobber makes his living sucking the glowy blue brain corpse goo and injecting them into people on the streets. Yum!
Tumblr media
Not everyone who needs an organ transplant can pay for it all upfront. Luckily for them, GeneCo provides payment plan options! The caveat to this is if you fail to make those payments, legally GeneCo can come and repossess your newly acquired organs. If you find yourself past due, you will soon see the last face before your doom, the Repo Man. He will harvest GeneCo's property, and it won't matter where you are or what you are doing. There is no anesthetic, and you will likely die! This was all made legal through Rotti's lobbying efforts.
Tumblr media
Society, as it's set up today, allows for property repossessions. This can be as straightforward as a repossession of your vehicle to as heartbreaking as a foreclosure on your home. At the end of the day, the impacts of that are difficult and life changing. Currently millions of people in America are out of work, and the threat of losing everything is at stake for many. We could lose our homes, our vehicles, and our sense of purpose. And while many government bodies have created temporary moratoriums, they have not provided any substantial financial relief to keep the proverbial repo man at bay. What went wrong in this dystopia to normalize the concept of death due to nonpayment? Fascism! Ah yes, the dreaded f-word. In my next essay, I will outline the 14 characteristics of fascism and how it relates to the universe in Repo! After I will relate that to our modern world so that we can try and stop this from becoming our reality.
