“You don’t mind if I record this, do you?”

Dean Hargrove sets a small tape recorder on the table, like it’s not the most ominous fucking move in the book. He always was a fan of dramatics. 

“I doubt saying ‘yes’ would change anything.”

“And whose idea was it to throw the party on the beach? You all claim it was supposed to be a small event, but I hear quite the crowd showed up. Who invited them?”

“No fucking clue,” she replied with a shrug. “We were trying to get some odd sense of normalcy -- y’know, like those lake house nights your son used to throw -- so no clue who would’ve invited half the town. You wanna know my best bet? -- some frat guy saw us, went over with Sigma Pi, then it just spread by word of mouth.”

“Let’s start with this… ‘Candy Girl’ nonsense. What do you know about her?”

“Literally nothing.” -- Which was nothing short of the truth. Despite the conversations Alice had deeply regretted having with her, she didn’t know a thing. ‘18/f/on your side’ -- probably not even the beginning of the truth. Hell, could’ve been a 56y/o man. “She’s been harassing us for whatever reason and really digs riddles -- that’s the extent of my knowledge.”

“Why do you think you got taken to the theater? Why not the other location?”

“I don’t know? What does that have to do with anything?” The theatre was more poetic, wasn’t it? Being marched onto a stage like prize pigs rather than within rows of books. Nonetheless, she could find nothing special, nothing beautiful, that separated her group from the library group.

“You say someone was ‘murdered’ in front of you… and none of you tried to stop it? Why?”

“First of all, she said she was the Candy Girl -- not exactly our priority. Second of all, even if she was, we were on a stage and she was not. We wouldn’t’ve had much time to help, like, no matter how much we wanted to.”

“You said the last - shall we call it a ‘challenge’? - required you to spill a secret. Insinuates the lot of you are keeping them, doesn’t it? So… what is so sacred to you that someone you’re claiming is a psychopath would want you to share it?”

“So you’re implying you don’t have any secrets?” Now it would seem like the man who basically controlled the entire town had... more than a few. “I’m sure you saw how innocent Jamie’s was -- it doesn’t mean anything.”
