I don't know if anyone else has done something like this but I've wanted to do it for a little while now, it's sort of a play on the art vs artist trend but it's a self insert vs self version! ^ 0 ^
Feel free to do one of your own and tag me if you feel like it, but I really just wanted to do it for fun! 💖🫶💖

#tag talk#also. when I want compliments I always wear my lantern earring. kids love it. adults love it. and people are surprised to hear I made it#like. idk. sometimes I want to be noticed so it's a very easy way to achieve that goal.#I was on break and someone with a question was like “do you work here?” and like. bestie? I do not look like I work at a hardware store#so you just know he recognized me out of apron and still asked. I was literally munching a sandwich while walking through the store on brea#but like. idk. it's still weird to realize that I'm recognizable. going from being known everywhere as a kid of well known parents to now#it's kind of weird to have people I don't recognize still recognize me. but it's nice to be known on my own terms#like. the tall girl with the cheekbones over there. that dude with nice hair and quirky earrings. idk. it's nice to be known for me#also. once again. I get that I stand out for being eternally cheery and smiling but it's still wild to me that others do not#I genuinely cannot frown. best I can do is glare daggers with a dangerously neutral face. my mouth doesn't curve down ever#how do people do that? I get asked to help and I will immediately drop what I'm doing to help. I'll stay half an hour over shift to help#hell. I've stayed two hours over when I was a nursing assistant.#idk. why does being kind make me special? why does being nice make me stand out? isn't the world supposed to work that way?#ngl I still feel like I'm twelve sometimes. like. I get that I'm an adult now but why#why is “adult” synonymous with angry and rude and impatient and inconsiderate and unhappy?#idk idk idk idk idk I get that people care about life more than I do. I would die tomorrow and not even feel that bad about it.#but while I'm stuck here I'll be damned if I don't do my best to make this a life worth being trapped in.#we can't all get hit by a truck and die on impact. some of us have to live. so make it easy on us okay?#anyway. idk. zest for life. joi de vivre or whatever. I know I'm capricious. I want to be capriciously happy. I want those ups.#forgot to mention the lantern earring was an idea I had whole in the hospital so making it was kind of a commitment to getting better#it was my first goal after getting out

Hi, I just found your blog, and I love your Simon's fics! I was wondering if i could please request something where Reader and Simon had broken up bc he thought he put her in danger. After a few months, he comes to her after a mission and they spend the night but he leaves before she wakes up thinking hes doing whats best (and all that angsty jazz 🥲🤭) . A few weeks after she finds out shes pregnant and decides to take on her own, as reader thinks simon wouldnt care. But maybe one of the guys see her heavy preggo and tell simon, and hes fuming and super protective mode is on.
Sorry if it is too specific and for the terrible english. I just have this idea, and i dont think i can picture it right. Anyway, thanks for reading this and for your good work on your fics 💗 hope you have a lovely day

╰┈➤ ❝ [You indulge in a one-night-stand after you'd both called it quits, only, it leads to more problems. When he sees you again, how will he react to the swelling of your stomach?] ❞
Tumblr media
You knew it was the effects of a less-than-gentle breakup, but you should have at least cursed him out before you let him have his way with you on the living room couch. You’d woken up back in bed, alone, and had gotten dropped back to where you had been weeks earlier—stuck in the throws of confusion and hurt.
Simon had left you, and he never gave you a reason.
A part of you was heated; pissed off and feeling betrayed by the insult, yet, the rest of you knew that Simon needed to have his reasons—he always did. Even if you didn’t agree with them, and you knew he tended to look at life with a glass-half-empty type of glance.
So that left you here.
You were pregnant.
You’d found out two weeks after you’d slept together for that last time, your cheeks still hot from the memory and your fingers clutching the plastic of a test.
Pregnant.
It had been a shock, a deep panic. The both of you had been reckless. Stupid. And while you had stared at those two pink lines, you felt a sinking in your gut akin to a drowning ship. Should you tell him? It would be proper, of course.
But you don’t think you can face him again after you’d awaken to an empty bed—as if your entire relationship had only been about sex and not the deep nights of confessions and soft brushes of skin. You knew Simon Riley better than he probably knew himself.
And you wouldn’t put this on him.
At seven months, you couldn’t walk as much as you could before—and you would huff for breath as you went up the stairs to change the sheets—but who else could do it but you? Shopping also fell to you, and so, you pushed a large cart around and packed the metal basket with cravings and necessities. That was when you fell to a familiar face.
“Johnny?” You ask, blinking.
The Scot pauses, turning. His brows furrowed for a moment before a kind smile peeled his lips back.
“Hen!” He comes closer, laughing. “Well, I haven’t seen you in a good minute, then. What have you been up to in all—”
The man freezes at the sight of your stomach, jaw going slack as you fight an internal war with yourself to say pleasantries and leave.
“Hell,” Johnny clears his throat. “I guess you’ve been doin’ a great deal.”
You sigh, shaking your head softly. “Thanks, Johnny.”
“I’m just joking, Little Lady.” The man laughs and waves a hand. “Who’s the lucky man then? I’ll have to meet him one of these days.”
Your face blanks and your lips snap shut in an instant.
Blue eyes wait for an answer as the silence laps over itself. Slowly but surely, the realization dawns on his face in a tight pull of horror.
“You can’t tell him,” you interrupt his tight gasp. “Not a peep, MacTavish, you hear?”
“What the fuck,” he breathes at you, hand coming up to his mouth as he glances down at your swelling bump. “Holy hell.”
“Johnny,” you snap, his eyes jerk back to you.
“It’s bloody Ghost’s—”
“You can’t,” you growl, coming closer, “tell him.”
“What do you mean I can’t tell him,” Johnny hisses under his breath, looking at the people passing by and lowering his tone. “You’re pregnant and he doesn’t know!”
“That’s the point,” you ease out, exasperated and feeling drained already. Jesus, you needed to go lay down—your back was killing you. “Johnny,” you breathe, growing softer as you reach out a hand and put it to his arm. He grips it and holds on, looking incredibly concerned. “He doesn’t need to know, okay? That’s a lot of stress on him, and you know what he does for work. Even worrying about me was hard on him, what do you think a child would do?”
“You can’t think like that,” the Scot mutters. “He can help—what, you mean to tell me you plan to do this by yourself?” It isn’t malicious how he says it; Johnny’s worried about you. Incredibly. “Hen, no,” he shakes his head. “No, you can’t.”
“I can, Johnny,” you frown, dread filling your heart. “And I will.”
In the future, you really had to take into account Johnny’s flapping lips when under the spell of alcohol. Maybe you had enough faith in him to watch himself for the last little while of your pregnancy as he had into the latter half of the eighth month.
And then three firm knocks were at your door, and when you opened it, you were face to face with a painted balaclava and frazzled brown eyes.
Those eyes immediately snap down, and not even a word is uttered to your face until then.
The both of you are stone-still. Frozen. Dead to all else.
You swear it was hours of this—standing in the doorway with Simon’s fingers stiff in his pockets and his chest not even moving in a pulse or flare of his lungs. He doesn’t even blink.
“How far along?” His voice is monotone. A low drone in the ringing of your ears.
Damn that Scot.
“Eight and a half,” you say quietly.
Brown eyes shift up to yours. Simon stares, and you see his jaw clench under his balaclava, his shoulders moving. Again a long pause.
“When’s the next appointment—”
“It’s a girl.” You see his eyelids peel back and halt there, watching you. “In case you care to stick around and see her.”
Cruel perhaps, but it was nothing short of how he acted while leaving you.
Simon’s hidden face is slack, stuttering silently for a moment as the light fades outside.
“Didn’t…didn’t know,” he grunts out, blinking quickly.
“I know you didn’t,” you utter. “That was the point, Simon.”
“Johnny told me ‘bout it, didn’t believe him.” His brown eyes swirl, breaking. “Thought you’d mention it if you were.”
“You left,” you breathe. “Why would I reach out to someone that did that to me.”
“M’sorry, I-I don’t…” Simon clears his throat, looking away. His eyes are glossy, fingers moving out of his pockets so his twitching hands can splay out. “Could have explained, but I didn’t know how, Love. I’m not…this isn’t…”
Words fail him just like his ability to explain his emotions. Part of him was angry—angry that you’d gone all this time without reaching out when he could have helped.
A daughter.
But he was afraid, as well. Terrified. You were in the right and he knew it. Simon didn’t know the first thing about being a father…but then again, you didn’t know how to be a mother, either.
This was new territory.
“Marry me,” Simon pushes out with a quick force of breath.
“Wh—,” you choke on air. “What?”
“Let me make it up to you, yeah?” Gloved hands move at his sides, eyes honest but still shiny. “Wasn’t thinking—my fault and I can’t go on if I don’t know you’re safe.” He licks at the corner of his mouth. “...Both of you. Thought leaving would make the best sense, but I was…fucking hell. M’sorry.”
“Simon, there are many more ways other than marriage.” Your anger wasn’t something that could be washed away that easily, even if your heart fluttered at the idea and his apology.
You had more self-respect than that.
“Let me fix this,” he whispers, leaning closer.
Your hand rests over your stomach, staying there as the minutes draw. Simon waits, nervous and his fingers tap on his thigh. You know he’s afraid. You know he’s nervous about what he could bring home from work, even if those are only his paranoia talking in his ear like a demon.
You frown.
You huff.
And you open the door wider.
“The sheets need changing in my room. Get on it.”
The man says nothing before he enters the house and slips off his boots; disappearing into the linen closet.

I have a small part in the 1987 television movie (failed pilot) version of The Man Who Fell To Earth. Lewis Smith played the titular character. Beverly D'Angelo played my mom, his love interest. (Fun Star Trek connection: Bob Picardo is also in it).
My character was a Troubled Youth, which I gotta tell you was not a stretch for me at all. I was deeply, deeply hurting at the time we made it. I was struggling not to suffocate on all the emotional and financial burdens my mom put on my shoulders, and fully aware of just how much my dad hated and resented me. You need a kid who doesn't want to be an actor, whose eyes can't hide the pain? I'm your guy.
Anyway, one of the scenes I was in took place in a record store, where Troubled Youth steals some albums, before he is chased by the cops and saved by the Man Who Fell To Earth, who uses a glowing crystal to save his life from ... some scratches on his face.
We filmed the interior of the record store at Sunset and La Brea, in what I think was a Warehouse, and at the end of the day, I was allowed to buy some records at a modest discount.
I was deep into my metal years, on my way from my punk years to my New Wave years, so I only bought metal albums. I know I bought more than I needed or could carry (I was making a point that I was allowed to spend my own money, mom), but the only ones I can clearly remember are:
Iron Maiden - Piece of Mind
Judas Priest - Turbo and Defenders of the Faith
W.A.S.P - The Last Command
(I know this was in March of 1987, because Turbo had just come out.)
Of those, Piece of Mind is the only one I never really stopped listening to, even through all the different it's-not-a-phase phases. I still listen to it, today.
Ever since I became an Adult with a Fancy Adult Record Player And All That Bullshit, I have kept my records in two places: stuff I want right now, and stuff I keep in the library because of Reasons.
Generally, records move in one direction toward the library, even if it takes years to happen. I just don't accumulate albums like I once did, because I'm Old and set in my ways.
Earlier today, I decided that I wanted to listen to an album while I cleaned up the kitchen, and because I wanted to make my life more interesting, I opened the library cabinet for the first time in at least five years.
There was the very same W.A.S.P album from that day in March, 1987. I don't have any of the others -- I looked -- but The Last Command was right there.
Before I really knew what I was doing, I put it on the Fancy Adult Record Player and dropped the needle.
I watched four decades of dust build up with a satisfying crackle, and there was something magical and beautiful about hearing all the skips and the scratches, realizing I remembered them from before.
The title track was just as great as I remembered it. It struck all the same chords in me that it did in the late nineteen hundreds. The rest of the first side was ... um. It just didn't connect with me, and for the few moments I spent trying to find a connection, I don't think it ever really did. I would remember.
But I did remember how much I loved making those mix tapes, and what a big part of them that song was. I did remember how empowering it felt to not just spend my own money that I earned doing work I didn't want to do, but to spend it on music my parents hated, right under their noses. I did remember how impressed Robby Lee was, when I showed him my extensive heavy metal album collection.
Remembering all of that, in one of those cinematic flashes of rapid cut visuals and sped up sounds, told me why I kept this record, while I gradually sold or replaced the other records I bought that day with CDs, then mp3s, then lossless digital files, before finally coming all the way back to records, where I started.
I didn't listen to the second side. I didn't need to. I took it off the Fancy Adult Record Player, and put it back into the library, next to the George Carlin records.

❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️
“God, I hope they're serving some warm food tonight,” you mutter, your body slowly moving up and down as you steer your horse up the hill and through a small trickle, the water glistening with the thin sheet of ice that is decorating its top. It crunches under the hooves of the animal as you make your way past the abandoned houses, the caved in roofs and trees heavy with fresh snow.
The ice crunches again, this time behind you, and it's the only indication that you're not alone. He stays quiet.
“The soup we had last week- what was it? Pumpkin?” You ask absent-mindedly. “That was delicious. And hot. Burned my tongue. But it was worth it.”
He still doesn't say anything. Not that it's unusual. It's why you're such a good fit. You’re complementary in that way. You talk, he listens. He pretends to be annoyed, you know he secretly likes the way your thoughts fly out of your mouth, practically unfiltered in his presence.
You let your horse fall back slightly until he catches up with you, the two of you riding side by side. “Joel?”
He turns his head at that, soft brown eyes landing on yours as he seems to be snapped out of thought, “Hm?”
“Were you listening to what I said?”
A small grumble escapes his throat, a dark eyebrow moving up ever so slightly. You roll your eyes at him, deciding to just drop it, “Forget it, it doesn't matter anyway.”
He lets a few moments of silence pass until you reach the small lookout and demount your horses, tying them to a small fence post in front of the building. When he passes you on his way inside, there's a small smirk on his face.
“It wasn't pumpkin. It was carrot.”
He does listen.
Joel signs the patrol book while you busy yourself with the binoculars. The snow is almost blinding, the past week having brought more of it than you're used to, even in Jackson.
It's the favorite topic at night in the tipsy bison, with people complaining about the cold, about pipes bursting and about paths needing to be cleared every few hours. But above all the complaints is the knowledge that the vast amount of snow also has its upsides, keeping infected unable to move as fast and raiders from entering the valley at all.
That, and the children have taken to sledding down the small slopes in the town center, filling the air of the community with genuine laughter and happiness that more than makes up for the hardships the winter brings.
“Coast looks clear,” you mumble into his direction and Joel gives a small nod of approval as he finishes scribbling what is no doubt another joke at Tommys expense into the large book.
As you place the lens caps back onto the worn-out binoculars, two strong hands are placed on each side of your hips, Joel's body gently pressing into yours as he hums into your ear.
“Are we on time?”
You sigh dramatically but do check the small watch you carry in your backpack, finding that you've made good time on your way to the outlook, “We've got time for a small lunch break.”
But Joel doesn't let go, his arms only tightening their grip as he brings his lips to your cheek and you feel his teeth graze over your skin.
“Lunch break. For lunch,” you try weakly but he's having none of it. Joel's gloves come off with a swift motion and he drops them to the ground, his arms sneaking around you and pressing you into him with a little more force. His fingers don't quite extend to your most intimate areas yet, instead just teasing around them, his touch a little more forceful than usual to make sure you can feel it through your thick winter jacket.
“I think I have a better idea,” he mutters into your ear and you nod, pressing your body back against his as you give in.
It's not fair. The way that your brain practically goes silent the moment you're in his arms. It's like a storm raging outside and falling quiet the moment you shut the door. You wonder if he knows a secret pressure point on your body that noone else has ever found, one that eases your worries, that slows down the thoughts in your head that usually rush past at what feels like lightspeed. There's always something to worry about, something to consider, something to feel.
When you're with Joel, you only feel him.
He knows this. And he recognizes every time, without failure, the moment when your brain falls quiet, just by the way you push back into him, a soft gasp on your lips.
“Joel- it's too cold- '' you mumble. There's no heating around you, making the logistics of what he undoubtedly has in mind more than difficult.
“It's okay. I got you,” Joel whispers back. His hand is still warm from the thick gloves he always wears on patrol and he doesnt open a single button of your clothing, instead opting to flatten his hand and slide it into your pants.
His fingers barely fit into the front of your jeans and it causes them to press down on your skin immediately, drawing a whimper from your lips. He shushes you gently, curling his hand to reach further and a moment later, his index finger is inside of you, the calloused skin brushing against your inner walls.
“Fuck, Joel, please-” You practically beg, a familiar heat already burning in your core as you push yourself into the palm of his hand, squirming with the way his hand aligns so perfectly with your front.
Maybe it's because of the cold or because he knows that you're still on a schedule but he doesn't make you wait as long as he usually does, slowly beginning to move his finger in and out of you. You can feel your own wetness staining the inside of your panties as it runs down his fingers and your own hands begin to wander, one clutching onto his arm while you sneak the other around yourself, brushing over the outline of Joel's hard cock behind you.
He hisses under his breath, feeling the touch even through the thick fabric of his jeans and a second finger enters you almost automatically.
“This is about you, darlin’,” he mutters, pressing himself against you a little harder and using his unoccupied hand to grab your wrist, “You just be good for me and stay still.”
So he doesn't want to go all the way, probably a smart choice in the current weather. Any disappointment you feel is quickly washed away however as you feel Joel's fingers curl inside of you, brushing over the spot that makes your knees weak.
You have no idea how he's able to finger you this well in the current position, restricted by the cold and all the layers of clothing between you. The small room is filled with the sound of your heavy breathing and you can feel the warmth of Joel's breath in your neck as he uses his nose to push aside the scarf that's wrapped around your throat and nips at your skin.
His other hand, still wrapped around your wrist, comes to your front, still restricting your arm while also holding you up.
“Come on, let me hear you, baby,” he mutters under his breath. “Noone around to tell us off. Just you and me.”
And again, your brain doesn't protest. You don't think about the dangers of being too loud, of humans or infected being attracted by the sound, of anything really. Your body and your brain seem to agree. You're safe with him.
So you let the noises flow from your lips, whimpering and moaning, mixing Joels name with a string of curse words when his thumb begins rubbing over your clit.
“Fuck, Joel, please, please, please let me come, Joel-” You break off into another fit of unintelligible words and Joel hums behind you, rubbing his nose against your ear. You can practically hear the grin on his face, “Go on, darlin’.”
It only takes a few more thrusts of his fingers inside of you until you're falling apart in his arms, your body jerking as the pleasure of your orgasm shoots through you.
Joel's arms stay tightly wrapped around you and he gives a few more gentle, shallow curls of his fingers, letting you fully ride out your orgasm, before he withdraws his hands from your jeans, leaving your underwear a mess.
“There we go. That's my girl,” he mumbles into your ear as he turns you around carefully and tugs on your jacket a bit, making sure that you're properly protected against the cold. It's endearing how much attention he pays to your shirt being tucked in correctly and your zipper being drawn. He holds you for a while longer, placing gentle kisses on the skin that he still can reach until he's sure you're good to go. You catch a glimpse of him licking the taste of you off his fingers before putting his gloves back on.
Your legs are still wobbly when you head back to your horses a few minutes later and you nod towards the woods, “I'm gonna go pee real quick.”
You're not sure why you blush now when you've literally just had Joel's hand knuckle-deep inside of you but he doesn't seem to mind. In fact, he almost enjoys it, a small smirk playing around his lips, “You do that.”
Ever the gentleman, Joel waits with Old Beardy and Japan while you stalk through the snow for a few more meters until you find a spot that looks like it'll work well-enough as a makeshift toilet. It takes a moment to undress with all the layers you're wearing and you curse as you pull your panties down to find them stained with your own juices, the sticky liquid smeared throughout the cotton fabric.
Meanwhile Joel's hand is scratching the soft neck of his horse when he hears a small yell. In an instant, he has his revolver drawn and is hurrying into the direction you disappeared into mere minutes ago.
He can feel his heart pounding in his chest as his boots sink into the snow with every step, his muscles ready to strike out at whatever danger is lurking behind the trees.
And then, suddenly, there you are. Standing in front of a pine tree that's only a little taller than him, your hand caressing the needles wet with snow.
Joel takes a breath, his gaze flying over the surroundings once more before he lets out a small sigh and lowers his gun, “What's going on?”
Your eyes, round and gentle, wander between the tree and him, lips pursed, like you know his reply to a question you haven't even asked yet.
“I know it's not the most practical option but-” You mumble and you can see the gears turning in Joel's head before he pinches his nose, closing his eyes for a moment, “You’ve got to be kidding me.”
It's been a few weeks since you sprung the idea on him while cuddling one night, mentioning that you hadn't had a Christmas tree for years and that with the woods around Jackson so full of pines, it would be a waste to not get one. Joel didn't care much for it but he was so content in that moment with you in his arms that he gave in, agreeing that a little bit of decorating wouldn't hurt. And it seems like precisely that promise is now back to haunt him.
Your hand leaves the pine and instead you reach for Joel, tugging on his jacket a little, “Come on. We have some rope, right?”
“Yeah. Yeah, we do have some rope,” he almost grunts, still keeping his eyes closed. When he opens them again, the brown in his eyes matches the trees around you and you're close enough to see the snow reflected in them.
“How bad do you want this?” He asks, honestly. He's straightforward, as always, so you decide to be as well.
“I really want it. It's perfect, it has the right size and we can keep it outside until I have finished the decorations and-”
Joel raises his hand a little, effectively cutting you off. He's heard enough.
“Okay.”
It's late when you get back to Jackson, riding through the wooden gate on your horses, the freshly cut pine tree tied to a makeshift sled behind you.
“I can't believe you talked me into this.”
Joel had offered a few more grunts and complaints about picking a tree so far away from Jackson when there were more than enough close to the perimeter. But then you had leaned over to him, just as he finished tying the tree down with a few sturdy knots.
“Maybe I can make it up to you by using this for something else, later.”
He smirked on the ride back, only stopping when you reached the small road that led down to the town and putting on his usual, gruff demeanor.
It barely lasts until you reach your doorstep.

[Fae!Dream and Vampire!Hob AU]
For @gabessquishytum and wing anon 🖤 I've had this in my notes for a couple of weeks, but now seems to be a good time to share it. 😊
Fun fact, this was inspired by these lines from Baby, It's Cold Outside: "I wish I knew how / (Your eyes are like starlight now) / To break this spell"
Don't ask. The weather was 30°C+ outside when I typed this up. 😂
CW: the tiniest amount of spice, and Dream and Hob being insane about each other as usual.
Fae!Dream runs away from home in the middle of winter and ends up on the wrong side of the forest. He has never been here before. The trails are winding and changes directions when he isn't looking, and the trees are indifferent to his plight, refusing to point him towards the fae side of the forest. 'We are too sleepy,' they say. 'Fuck off.'
Soon, though, he comes upon a castle, and he can see that there's light inside. Snow is already falling pretty hard by then, and Dream is so desperate for warmth and shelter that he knocks on the imposing front doors.
It takes a while for someone to answer, but Dream waits. It's a huge castle. He's about to knock again when the door opens and a handsome vampire peeks his head out. When he sees Dream, shivering and hunched over, lips almost blue, he hurriedly opens the door wide and ushers him in.
Dream enters the castle. Despite everything he has learned in his long, long life.
He knows he has to tread carefully. It's common knowledge that fae and vampires don't get along. But he also knows how important inviting someone inside is to vampires, and he doesn't exactly have a choice. He has two options, and they are: 100 percent chance of freezing to death on one hand, and 50 percent chance of being murdered by a vampire on the other.
Although...now that he's looking, he thinks the vampire looks nice, actually. He's currently talking about getting Dream warmed up in front of a fire and getting him some soup, then apologizing right after because there won't be garlic in the soup.
Dream thinks his voice sounds lovely.
The vampire keeps his promises. Soon, Dream is warm in front of a fireplace, eating creamy vegetable soup. The vampire talks about how he made the soup, and Dream can tell that he's just as nervous as having a fae in his home. But Dream senses no falsehood in his words or in his manners.
Dream is so fucking charmed by him that he (unthinkingly) asks him his name. And then realizes his mistake one second later when the vampire's open features shutter close and his muscles tense.
"My name is Dream," Dream offers. He knows he should not give his name. Not his true one, anyway. And yet he does.
If the vampire's goal is to hurt him, he does not need Dream's true name for that. Dream is still weak from running and escaping his bodyguards. If the vampire wants to hurt him, he'll be too weak to fight back.
"Sure," the vampire says, and...yeah, he's right to be suspicious. 'Dream' isn't exactly one of the top 100 baby names for male fae babies. Lord and Lady Endless knew what they were doing when they named their children. "You can call me Hob."
Hob.
His name doesn't taste like a lie, but Dream knows it's not his real name. It's fine. He likes 'Hob.'
"Thank you for offering me shelter," Dream says. He knows he shouldn't show gratitude or else it will bite him in the ass in the future. He does so anyway. "I was running away from home."
He knows he is under no obligation to speak the truth in its purest form. He has learned how to mislead and twist his words in a way that is still true, but volunteers less information. He does so anyway.
Hob is looking at him intensely, like he is also trying to figure Dream out. "May I ask why?"
And so the whole story falls out of Dream's mouth. It's the first time he has ever talked to anyone about how he is being treated at home, but Hob is respectful and lets him talk. Hob is nice and pours him a glass of water when his voice become hoarse.
Hob is lovely because when Dream starts to break down in the end, telling him all about the entire business with the Burgesses, he takes out a handkerchief and wipes Dream's tears away himself.
"I'm so sorry about everything that has ever happened to you," Hob says in the end, when Dream realizes that he is on Hob's lap, being held. It feels nice. He wants to snuggle up further, but his manners prevent him from doing so. "But I'm glad you've left them for good."
That makes Dream pause, and he shakes his head. "I have not. Technically, I am still under their protection." He looks outside to see heavy snowflakes still drifting down, and an occasional wind gusting through. "I still have to go home."
Hob looks out the window and then back to him incredulously. "In this weather?"
"I have to," Dream insists. "If not..."
"If not?"
Dream looks down at his lap. At Hob's handkerchief that was somehow now in his hands. It's a pretty cream color with the initials R.G. embroidered on the corner. Dream does not think what the initials mean because he doesn't want to pry. Hob's true name is his business alone. But he likes the handkerchief. Perhaps he can keep it as a souvenir of his time at the castle of the handsome vampire. It would be his most prized possession. He will not draw attention to it so Hob will forget to ask him to return it. "If not," Dream says, "I will die before the season turns."
Hob inhales sharply, and then he's clasping Dream's arms. "Is that a fae thing?"
Dream nods miserably. It's how they lost Destruction. And how Dream will be lost, if he doesn't get back. He hopes Death will take care of Jessamy for him.
"Is there no loophole for that?" Hob asks, looking frantic. "There must be something. Like...I don't know, like a transfer of protection?"
Hob must be a very young vampire for him not to know the rules. But Dream knows the rules by heart, and all the loopholes as well, from hundreds of years trying to bend them. And the only way...
"Oh."
"Oh?" Hob echoes. "Is there a way to save you after all?"
There is, but--
He could not possibly--
"I have to leave," Dream announces, and regretfully gets off of Hob's lap and starts walking away.
"What? Why?" Hob asks, standing up himself and following him. "Do you have to go on a quest for some item or something? Stay the night. There's literally a blizzard--"
"I cannot!" Dream shouts.
Hob, shocked by Dream's outburst, holds his hands up peaceably. "Alright," he says gently. "May I ask why?"
Dream bites his lip and says nothing.
"Tell me," Hob begs. "Please. I want to help."
Dream shakes his head. Nobody wants to help. Randall had tried to trap him against his will. Alexander was too afraid of his father and brother to help Dream escape and had only pointed him deeper into their house. Dream almost didn't make it.
Hob exhales. Not out of impatience, but out of a decision reached. "Look," he says, hands still open in a gesture of peace. "I know you have no reason to trust me, but I really do want to help you. I know a thing or two about being trapped in a situation I do not want to be in, and I wouldn't want anyone else to experience that. So...I would like you to know my name."
Dream gapes at him. A vampire willingly giving his own true name to a fae? It's practically unheard of. It's a trick. It's--
Hob takes a deep breath and says, "My name is Robert Gadling."
'R.G.' The handkerchief is his. Dream's fingers tingle at this new information.
There is a change that happens, when someone tells a fae their true name voluntarily, knowing exactly what they're getting into. It's a different kind of change than when their name is tricked out from them.
If their name is tricked out of them, a thin string, only visible to the fae, connects the being to the fae they gave their name to, as a sign of possession.
But when someone tells a fae their true name the way Hob--Robert Gadling, just did, they will look more real to the fae. More tangible.
And a more tangible Robert Gadling, a kind and handsome vampire who would open his doors to a fae, feed them, keep them warm, and want to help them save their life? All the while smelling of nothing but sincerity?
"Tell me," Hob, Robert, says again. "I want to help you."
Dream suddenly hungers for him. And his sudden yearning to make Hob his is not conducive to the conversation. "You--"
"Please," he says. "Unless there's something preventing you to? More of your fae rules?" He looks contemplatively at the space between them. "Do I have to kneel?"
No. Yes. Lie and make him kneel.
"If I stay," Dream says faintly, the words tumbling out of his mouth without his conscious consent, "my parents' protection will slowly pass to my current host."
Hob looks alarmed at that, probably wondering how many hours it has been since Dream has arrived. "How slowly?"
"A week at most."
The answer, of course, is much more complicated than that. In the case of the Burgesses, Dream still has his parents' protection at the end of Day 5, when he finally escaped. In Unity Kincaid's case, she was so in love with Desire that it only took a day for her parents' protection to fade.
But with the way things are going between him and Hob, and with how fast Dream is prone to falling in love, his parents' protection will most likely fade after three days. At most.
"So stay," Hob says, as if it were that simple. He is still so young. He doesn't know what he is offering. "If you haven't noticed yet, the castle is entirely empty, aside from the castle's spirit itself. It takes care of itself and was kind enough to open its doors for me when I rose from the dead. And if it can offer me, a no-good vampire who used to be a highwayman, a home, then who am I to not offer you my protection as well?"
'Highwayman' is a term that cannot be more than 300 years old. Dream is robbing the cradle.
"I am saying," Dream says slowly, "that if you are to offer me your protection, once my parents' protection has faded, you would be considered my husband. The fae will consider us married."
Hob blinks. "Oh."
"Yes, 'oh,'" Dream cannot help but say mockingly. "That is why I must leave."
But Hob just gestures to the windows helplessly, begging him to see sense at the sight of the howling winds that are thankfully muffled by the thick castle walls. "In this weather?"
"I must."
"A night."
"What?"
"Stay for the night," Hob begs. "The weather might be better tomorrow. And if so, I will give you my thickest coat and help you get back to fae land myself. If...if you are afraid of me, I will stay here in the study, and you may choose any room you'd like to stay in for the night."
Dream stares at him, and ignores the way his body is pleasantly tingling all over, but especially between his legs.
Faes are not good. They are greedy creatures who will take the entire dish when presented with a bite.
And in the face of Robert Gadling's kindness and consideration...
Dream walks up to Hob and grabs him by the collar of his dressing gown. If Hob is willing to give him a coat, then Dream will steal all his clothes for himself as well. If Hob is willing to offer him his protection, then Dream will cast his own on him and name him husband without bothering to wait for his parents' protection to fade. If Hob has shown him kindness for an hour, Dream will want him for the rest of their life.
"Kiss me," he says. Demands. Begs. He doesn't know anymore. All he knows is that if Hob does not kiss him, he will cry.
Hob looks baffled. "What...will that accomplish, exactly? If I may ask?"
Dream groans in frustration and stamps his feet. "I will be kissed," he says. "I will know what you taste like, and you will know mine. Our lips will be thoroughly acquainted and we will feel our tongues push wetly against each other. Is that not enough of an accomplishment for you?"
"Sounds like you want more than just a kiss, your highness," Hob says, but his gaze and his voice are lower now, which is exactly what Dream wants.
"I am not a prince," Dream tells him honestly. Always with honesty. "But I do want more than just a kiss from you. With the generosity you have shown me, with you telling me your name, if you do not kiss me, I will simply waste away and perish."
"Well, we can't have that," Hob says. "Not after I just saved you from freezing to death."
"No, we cannot," Dream agrees. "So kiss me, Robert Gadling." His true name on Dream's tongue tastes like sunlight. "Kiss me and protect me and make me yours right now."
Hob's eyes are dancing as he brushes a lock of hair away from Dream's face and tucks it behind his ear. "You're a greedy little fae, aren't you?"
"And you are still not kissing me, you stubborn vampire."
"I can't believe this is how my evening turned out," Hob chuckles, and touches their foreheads together. "I must have gone insane the moment I saw you. I would normally offer to court someone first before the topic of marriage can even be considered."
Dream pecks Hob's dimpled chin, impatient. He has a slight stubble that would feel wonderful against Dream's thighs. "I am not human. Or another vampire. I am a fae. And if you do not kiss me right now, I will go out in that snowstorm and--"
"Alright, you sweet impatient thing," Hob says, "No need for such threats." And finally dips his head down to touch their lips chastely.
Dream would have none of that, however, and surges upwards, intent on devouring him. Their sharp canines clack against each other, but it does not deter them.
"Are we insane?" Hob asks when Dream has to take a breath. It's so unfair that Dream has to breathe when Hob does not. "To do this right after we just met? Tell me truly."
"Yes," Dream answers honestly. "I do not know of anyone who consummated their coming together as one on the very day they met."
"Consummating, hm?" Hob's thumb presses against his hipbone when he pulls Dream closer to him. "We can do that."
"Yes," Dream agrees. "Right now. Please. Everything."
And Hob does just that.
--
His parents' protection fades even before Hob could fuck him, but he's too preoccupied by the feeling of Hob's stubble on his thighs to notice.
--
In the morning, Hob presents him with the most beautiful obsidian ring he has ever seen, and Dream immediately says yes before Hob could even ask the question.
--
"For the record," Hob says one night after they finished fucking in the library, "I was fully intending on lending you all my thick coats that first night. You looked so cold I was hesitant to even take off your clothes."
Dream snuggles up to him and drapes one leg over Hob's deliciously hairy thighs. "That would not have worked," he says, certain. "I would have simply taken off all my clothes and accepted nothing from you except your most translucent nightgowns to cover my nakedness."
"You will seduce a vampire? Didn't you tell me that our kind do not get along?"
Dream bites him gently on the shoulder with his smaller fangs.
"I would not seduce a vampire," he says haughtily. "I have met some before, and found none of them pleasing. It is you I would seduce. The man I have decided would be mine forever as my husband."
Hob kisses his forehead, and Dream could feel the foolish smile on his lips. "Who is a vampire."
"Shush, Robert Gadling," he says, unable to stop himself from smiling as well.

Valentine's Day proves to be one of the busiest days at the floral shop where you work. Breathing in the heady floral scents that permeate the store, you find yourself in continuous motion, assembling bouquets of pink roses, carnations, violets, and every red flower known to man into the van. With your back straining from the constant lifting, you absently listen to the gentle voice of your boss reassuring an irritated customer about their belated delivery—
and you wince.
Although you should be in a rush taking care of the deliveries, you tiptoe inside the back of the shop to avoid interrupting your boss—
But he merely hangs up the phone upon seeing your flustered face.
“S, sorry—” You begin.
He shakes his head with a gentle smile playing on his thinly bearded lips and says, “Don’t worry about it, love.”
The way he addresses you as ‘love’ used to bother you. It always seemed so…formal, old-fashioned, but coming from him—your boss—he somehow makes it work without needing to force the romantic undertone. Perhaps it is because he is on the older side and being a foreigner in this little town of yours.
The town lies deep within the trench of an endless forest, and you wonder how your boss had found his way here.
His arrival several years ago stirred many gossips about him, with him keeping his lips sealed about his past, but everyone slowly warmed up to him. His succulent blooms, never seen before even in the gardening magazines, certainly helped. Now, your boss is a familiar face among the townspeople, with very few not knowing who he is. And, of course, his handsome and charming demeanor won the hearts of many too.
“But I would’ve made the deliveries on time if I didn’t eat brea—” you try.
His piercing green eyes soften as you nervously fixing your rolled sleeves. You halt when he suddenly leans in.
“Boss—?” You rasp at the new weights on your shoulders, trying to pay no mind to the strange dark strains on his thick fingers.
The way he held you was almost…fond—
And he pushes you outside to the doorway. “Go finish the deliveries, won’t you?”
“Really?” You huff, trying to ignore the red tinge to your cheeks and the heavy thumping of your heart.
Your boss smiles that damnable handsome smile of his and pats you on your head, saying, “Get to it. The sooner you finish, the sooner I can give you your little Valentine’s Day bonuses for working so hard.”
While giving his employees gifts during holidays and special events is not new to your boss, you still perk up in eagerness and reward him with the biggest smile you can muster. As you dart away with a confident promise to complete the deliveries, he watches you scurry to the van, inhaling sharply,
“Soon.”
Your boss murmurs, rubbing his knuckle with his other hand—as if to hide the sudden green spot on it. Tiny vines emerge briefly, before he rubs them away and pivots back to his cash register where his impatient customers have started to queue. Flashing them with a dazzling smile to reassure frustrated customers with a wordless apology, your boss absently peers over to his office.
There, on his desk, is the special bouquet he prepared for you and only you.
Imagining you burying your face into the fragrant cluster of your favorite flowers, oblivious to the true intention of its purpose, the toxic drugging qualities meant to lure you into his arms—into his ivies and his binds of vines and creepers—had him biting back a shudder. Restraining himself before the antsy crowd, your boss rings up a customer with an invisible countdown ticking in his head.
A countdown to have you.
The blooms nearby writhe and shudder, with most dismissing it as mere breezes from the air conditioner.
It was not.
—end…?

Standing in the Sun
Tumblr media
So! Since my old blog got hacked and deleted, I'm finally ready to come back! I'll just be posting a few of my faves for now, and this is number one to come back out! I love Mirio so much, and this was a labour of love for me to write but I'm so happy with it and I hope everyone enjoys it <3
Pairing: Mirio/Reader
Word Count: 14,031
Warnings: Soulmate AU, violence, awkwardness, smut but this one is fairly vanilla I believe? There is a creampie though!
Thank you and enjoy!
Tumblr media
You were 16 when your mark showed up.
Everyone in school had laughed when it showed up, the child-like sun showing up on your wrist looking absolutely ridiculous. Most soul marks were a little more refined, looking like fancy tattoos more than anything.
Yours looked like an 8 year old’s interpretation of a sun, minus the cartoon sunglasses and poorly drawn smile.
It was so basic. One of your friends had an intricate rose across her ribcage, another had a detailed mountain range on his back-
And you had a simple sun.
What the fuck did that even mean?
In a world full of quirks it was always difficult to know whether your soul mark had something to do with your soulmate’s personality, hobbies, or their quirk; and with one as plain as yours, you figured that you’d never find your person. Were they someone with a light based quirk? Did they just like being outside?
Years later, you still didn’t know.
You stared down at your wrist, sighing as you leaned back on your sofa. The TV played on in the background, but you were unaware of what was on anymore, mostly using it as white noise at this point. The paperwork you’d been doing for your students was scattered around your coffee table in various piles, only half done. As a developing quirk advisor, you spent your days helping kids whose quirks had recently manifested to learn to control them, and spent your nights marking their progress through various reports for their parents and teachers. It was rewarding work, even if it took up almost all of your time in order to keep up with the number of kids under your care.
A glance over at the digital clock on your oven revealed that you’d been sat there for longer than you’d thought- it was starting to get late and you still hadn’t even thought about what to eat. Stretching your arms over your head, you groaned in satisfaction at the way your joints popped. Leaving your paperwork on the table, you ran a hand over your pomeranian’s head as he napped next to you on the sofa, ignoring his little grumble as you stood up. You smiled at his grumpiness as you padded over to your kitchen, only to groan when you opened the fridge.
Nothing. Nothing you could use to make a substantial meal anyway, and the way your stomach was growling at you said that a snack wasn’t going to cut it. Your eyes dragged over to Chibi when he raised his head to glare at you, as if he knew what you were thinking already. As you closed the fridge you smirked, tilting your head at him. “Hey buddy, you want to go for a walk?”
Chibi snorted, turning around in place on the sofa and flopping down, his back facing you.
--------------------------------------------------------------
After 20 minutes and a lot of unnecessary furry struggling, Chibi was reluctantly trotting along the pavement beside you as you headed to a nearby ramen shop that knew you by name. You smiled down at him fondly as you walked, knowing that even though he likely hated you right now he’d be back to snuggling you in bed later.
A small commotion further up the street stole your attention away from your companion, your head shooting up at the shrill scream that tore through the air. A woman was on the ground, having been pushed down by a large man that was running around the corner-
A man who was currently barrelling toward you.
Before you could even react, he’d crashed into you and sent you crumbling to the ground, Chibi’s leash flying out of your grip as you fell. You cried out as you hit the pavement, the breath knocked from your lungs momentarily as you registered the footsteps of more people running towards you. Scrambling to grab Chibi’s leash, your heart was in your throat as you watched him jump away from all the people sprinting past. He yelped as he ran out into the (thankfully empty) street, little legs pumping and taking him away from you.
You watched him go with frantic eyes, only looking away from him briefly to glance at the incoming group of people.
Heroes.
While part of you was relieved that the brute that knocked you down was going to be taken care of, your focus was quickly drawn back to the rapidly disappearing canine that was running still. Pushing yourself up quickly, you took to chasing him on your own, the other civilians in the area too distracted by the hero chase to really pay attention to your frantic calls of your dog’s name.
--------------------------------------------------------------
You still hadn’t found him.
You’d been searching for what felt like hours already, calling out his name between sobs. As your only companion, Chibi was probably an attachment that would be considered unhealthy at this point but he was your world. Losing him would be a huge blow, and it had your heart pounding in fear at what could have possibly happened to him.
“Excuse me, Miss? Is this little guy the one you’re looking for?”
Whipping around quickly, you gasped at the sight of Chibi panting heavily in someone's arms, not even looking up at the person straight away. You choked out his name, your arms shooting out to grab him as you sobbed out a yes to the stranger. Chibi happily snuggled into you as you held him close to your chest, licking at your cheeks before settling in your arms. You finally looked up to thank the stranger, relief flooding you as your eyes flicked up to meet-
Blue. His eyes were so blue.
And he was big . The man towered over you, the brightness of his outfit surprising you for a moment before you realised that he was a hero . And not just any hero either, this was Lemillion . His grin was still boyish despite the fact that he had to be in his mid twenties by now, not too far from your own age. Your mouth hung open, your eyes rapidly tracing over him as he chuckled at your response.
From what you remembered seeing back in your school days from the sports festivals, Lemillion had always been big, but now that he’d graduated and become a pro hero, the baby fat was completely gone. He was all hard planes of muscle, broad shoulders and massive arms, and god damn those thighs looked powerful. But as your eyes returned to his face, a heat coming to your cheeks at so blatantly checking him out, you realised that there was definitely a boyish charm to his look.
“Sorry it took me so long to find him! I saw the whole thing before but he’s fast ! And even when I caught up to him he was so grumpy at first! You’ve got a little spitfire there!” Lemillion was looking down at Chibi in your arms with almost the same fond expression you’d had before everything happened. You reached a hand up to swipe the tears from your cheeks, sniffling once before getting yourself together and smiling at him.
“Thank you for finding him for me, I didn’t think it’d really be a priority when there was something like that going on…” Lemillion blinked at you for a second before laughing, reaching out to stroke the top of Chibi’s head softly.
“There were plenty of heroes around to catch that guy, and he was nearly out of steam anyway! When I saw this guy run off I knew I had to do something to help, so I split off and hunted him down. He’s a smart cookie though! Knew to take the back streets and alleys, and when I found him he was huddled in a bush!” Lemillion’s hand moved down to scratch under Chibi’s chin, the canine’s eyes squinting in satisfaction. “Now that you’ve got him though… It’s pretty late, you should be getting home! After all that excitement, both you and the little guy probably need to rest.”
You opened your mouth to thank him one last time before you left, but halted when your stomach grumbled loudly. Your face flushed with heat once again as Lemillion’s eyed dropped to your stomach, his eyes widening in understanding after a moment.
“Oh! You haven’t eaten yet? Well, if it’s okay with you… d’you wanna grab something to eat with me? My patrol is over now and I’m starving!”
You blinked. Lemillion wanted to have dinner with you? You knew from the various people who posted about him online that he was a friendly hero, but this seemed a little over the top…
But the look on his face was open, genuine, like it was something he did all the time. You couldn’t help but nod, a small smile on your lips.
“Sure, but you have to let me treat you, okay? As a thank you for rescuing Chibi…” You raised the arm holding your dog, gesturing to him with your head and rolling your eyes playfully. Lemillion’s face tinted pink, his head shaking and a protest that you could already hear starting to form. “And I won’t take no for an answer, mister, so just accept it.”
Lemillion almost seemed bashful as he nodded, even though he was the one who boldly offered in the first place. As you led him back to your favourite ramen shop, you chatted amicably about mundane things. You didn’t pick up on it straight away, but by the end of the walk you had caught him staring at you a few times as you walked, eyes always tracing over your face. As you sat down at the table in the little shop, placing Chibi on the chair next to you, you gave him a curious look.
“Is something wrong?” Lemillion’s face blazed at your question as he sat down across from you, rubbing his hand on the back of his neck and chuckling nervously. His eyes avoided you, instead focusing on the menu as he cleared his throat.
“Nothing! It’s fine, don’t worry about it!”
You ended up dismissing the thoughts and focusing on food yourself, and soon enough the two of you had your orders and were tucking into them heartily. The shop owner (who knew you very well from your years of coming here, and absolutely loved Chibi.) even provided your little man with some strips of meat, patting him softly on the head before toddling off to serve other customers. As you ate, you stole glances at Lemillion, catching him watching you a few times again and both of you quickly breaking eye contact and looking away.
You couldn’t shake a nagging feeling in the back of your head, a feeling you weren’t able to identify constantly swimming at the edges of your mind. It felt… warm. Like even though you two just met, you’d known each other longer than that, and that this was just another comfortable hangout among many others.
In reality, his costume was drawing curious eyes as people passed the ramen shop. You bristled slightly when a couple of teenage girls came up to your table requesting an autograph, unsure of why you had a pit in your stomach at his resulting smile. The girls were fawning over him and somehow, it put you off the rest of your food, making you put down your utensils and push it away from you slightly. You focused on stroking Chibi’s head, giving the dog your full attention as Mirio fielded their questions and signed some of their belongings. When he finally waved goodbye to them and turned back to you, your previously happy mood had dimmed and you were simply getting tired, the emotional nature of the evening finally catching up with you. Lemillions eyes widened as you yawned, pulling his phone out of his pocket and checking the time before slapping his forehead dramatically.
“Oh man! I didn’t realise how late it was! We should get you home, right?” Nodding your head, you quickly pulled out some money to pay for both of your meals and picked Chibi up once again. You waved to the owner of the restaurant as you walked out, ignoring her pointedly raised brows when she looked between you and Lemillion, and stepped out into the cool night air. Crossing your arms over Chibi, you were glad you’d pulled a hoodie on before you left the house earlier, the night having cooled considerably already.
Lemillion took a deep breath and set his hands on his hips, smiling up at the night sky for a second before turning to face you.
“That was some good food! Thanks for showing me this place, I might have to come back sometime.” His head tilted to the side as he noticed you wrap your arms a little tighter around Chibi, a frown twisting his face slightly. “Are you cold? Here, let me just…”
Lemillion reached up, fiddling with where his cape meets his costume for a moment before the fabric came loose, reaching out to wrap it around your shoulders gently. Your eyes widened for a moment as you unwrapped one arm from around Chibi’s belly, clutching the cape closed and looking down to the floor sheepishly, heat rising in your cheeks again. Lemillion fiddled with the fabric until he was satisfied with its placement, smiling at you gently and gesturing for you to lead the way. He was going to walk you home?
The heat in your cheeks stayed firmly in place, your stomach flipping even as you internally berate yourself. He’s a hero, of course he’s going to be nice to you. Don’t look into it too much, it doesn’t mean anything to him . Forcing your feelings to chill the fuck out, you started walking toward your home and gave Lemillion a soft smile as he fell into step beside you. The walk wasn’t all that long, the two of you chit chatting as you went and Chibi resting comfortably in your arms and panting as he watched the world go by. Lemillion seemed to be showing actual interest in you and your work when he asked questions, throwing you for a loop and making your stomach flip flop dramatically even though you knew he was just doing his job as a hero.
As you walked, your mind started to wander. You couldn’t understand why you felt so… relaxed? That wasn’t quite the right word, but the feeling in the back of your mind refused to show itself any further to let you identify it. This was a hero, a man you’d never met before that night, but you were walking and talking like you’d known each other for years, laughing and poking fun at anything and everything. Lemillion’s sense of humour was… odd at times, but you found yourself enjoying it nonetheless. You almost felt… upset when you arrived back at your house, a soft frown on your face. Lemillion noticed, because of course he did, and raised a brow at you in question.
“Are you sure you’re okay?” His voice was softer than it had been all night, and it made something in your chest twist. You ignored the feeling, schooling your features and smiling up at him with a nod.
“Of course! Well, this is me! Thank you so much, Lemillion, count me as one of your ‘million people saved’, okay?” Your joking words had him smiling widely, hands going to his hips once again.
“Don’t mention it! Have a good night, okay?” With those parting words, Lemillion turned with a mock salute and headed off into the night. You smiled after him for a moment, before making your way into your house, letting Chibi down and removing his harness. The dog immediately ran over and settled himself into his spot on the sofa, huffing as he lay down to fall asleep.
You groaned when you realised that Lemillion had forgotten to take his cape from you. As you held the material in your hands, you sighed and buried your face into it for a second. It still smelled like him, something citrusy and light, but still distinctly masculine, and you cringed when it occurred to you that this was super creepy . You can’t just sniff a guy’s cape like that!. You folded the fabric carefully, placing it on the small table by the front door in case he realised and came back for it, before removing your hoodie to hang it up by the front door.
You failed to notice that rapidly fading glow of your soul mark on your wrist, too focused on staring fondly at your canine companion.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Lemillion never came back for his cape, but you saw a news story a few days later about a rescue he’d been part of and he had a new one, so you figured he wasn’t all that bothered.
You started using it as a throw on the sofa, snuggling up with Chibi under it when you were watching TV in the evenings, hoping he never came back for the damn thing. It was the perfect thickness to provide comfort, but thin enough not to overheat you, and it was so damn soft . You loved it.
The whole encounter became just another crazy story you could tell your friends and coworkers. Lemillion found your lost dog, had dinner with you and walked you home- who else could say that? In the weeks following the event, you told it countless times, until everyone already knew and it started to fade from your repertoire. Some of them were jealous, others told you you should have dragged him into your home and had your way with him. You always felt heat rise in your cheeks at that, shaking your head vehemently to deny the idea. He was hot, sure, but he was a hero , and you were just a simple everyday woman.
Once the novelty wore off, you threw yourself back into your work. One of your students had been struggling a lot with her quirk- it had manifested recently and was a mutation, so none of her family were really able to help her all that much with learning how to control it.
Your own quirk was almost perfectly suited to your job: Empathy. You were able to feel the emotions of others when you concentrated on them, and with time you learned how to influence their emotions too. This meant that when your students were scared, frustrated or angry, you were able to calm them down a little and help them see the situation clearly.
Growing up, you hadn’t really known how to apply your quirk most helpfully. You’d never really wanted to be a hero, but that didn’t mean you didn’t want to help people, and it was only when you were volunteering to help a neighbor out with their young child that it occurred to you.
Man, I wish I had your quirk! Being able to calm this little one down during a tantrum would make my life ten times easier!
And with those words in mind, you realised what you wanted to do. Helping others by helping the next generation of heroes get to grips with their quirks, help them grow and flourish- it was perfect. Many years of studying and internships later, you were finally one of the best in the city, sought after by many schools for their problem children. It was exhausting, but you’d never trade it for anything now.
This particular little girl- Mika- had a quirk that allowed her to create storm clouds. Not just rain, but thunder and lightning too, and since she came from a family with all ground based quirks they were out of their element with her. The school had contacted you a while ago when she accidentally started making clouds inside the classroom when she got upset or didn’t understand something, and then became scared at the thunder. It would make her produce more clouds, only making the situation worse and ending with lots of the students in tears.
Mika was a quiet girl, a little on the shy side but with a heart of gold, and you wanted to help her so damn bad. She idolised heroes, and wished for a different quirk every day because she didn’t think she could become one with hers. As you were walking home from your most recent session with her, lost in your head, you didn’t even see someone exiting the shop next to you.
You crashed into what felt like a brick wall, your ass hitting the ground harshly as you dropped your work bag. Your eyes had closed in surprise, but shot open when you heard a familiar voice.
“Oh-! I’m so sorry- Hey, it’s you!” Lemillion stood in front of you yet again, although this time in civilian clothes. You gaped up at him and blinked, before scurrying to your feet, grabbing your bag and shaking your head.
“No! It was my fault, I wasn’t paying attention…” Your eyes drifted to the takeout bag in his hand, before glancing up to see that-
You were outside the ramen shop. He’d come back after all. Noticing your wandering gaze, he looked up to follow your eyes and chuckled, one arm coming up to rub a hand over the back of his head sheepishly.
“I uh- I really liked our dinner the other week, so I’ve been coming back here a few times since then.” Lemillion’s cheeks flushed, and you raise a brow. He almost seemed embarrassed, but you didn’t understand why until he spoke up again, uncharacteristically quiet. “And I was- well, I was kind of hoping to run into you again to be honest…”
Your heart kicked into overdrive for a second, your stomach flipping again until you realised- his cape. He probably just wanted it back, not to actually see you , because why would you even register on his radar? You were just a person he’d saved once. One of his million.
“O-oh, of course… If you’d be willing to walk home with me I can give it back right away, sorry for taking it in the first place but I didn’t really know how to give it back…” Your eyes didn’t lift from your hands, readjusting your bag and making sure all of your files were in place and that nothing had fallen out. When you finally looked up, Lemillion had a confused look on his face, his head tilted slightly. You raised a brow, your brows furrowing slightly. “...Your cape? That’s why you were trying to find me, right?”
Lemillion blinked at you, before bursting into laughter. All you could do was stand there, confused, people passing by giving you odd looks as they hurried past the hysterical man. He managed to reign it in, swiping at one of his eyes as his breathing began to level out.
“Oh, man! I forgot I even left it with you! I’ve had so many spares made over the years so I don’t really notice when my team swaps ‘em out.” The smile he gave you was genuine- and the softness in his eyes as he gazed down at you made something in your chest flutter before you could stop it. But you do- you had to stop being like this, you’d only met the man once and he saved so many people in one day, there was no way you were ever going to register on his radar and you refused to get your hopes up.
Besides, you had a soulmate out there somewhere who was waiting for you, you couldn’t let yourself get hung up on him just because he was lovely, and had nice eyes and you wanted to bite his thighs and rub your hands all over his pecs and-
Stop it .
You took a deep breath, shaking your head slightly. If it wasn’t his cape, then why the hell was he looking for you? Opening your mouth to ask, Lemillion cut you off before you could even speak.
“I wanted to speak to you about the kids you work with and if maybe we could set up some kind of group meet and greet, or something. I know it always motivated me to work hard at figuring out my quirk when I saw heroes in action as a kid, so imagine what it might do to actually meet one!” And there it was. The rational explanation that helped cut your thoughts off, despite the fog of hurt that suddenly swirled in your chest. This was for the best, you didn’t need to obsess over a man who’s world was so far removed from your own. You cleared your throat, adjusting your bag over your arm as you smiled up at him.
“Seems like a good idea, yeah! If you’re not too busy, that is…”
“Of course not! I wouldn’t have offered it if I didn’t think I’d have time.” Lemillion rubbed at the back of his head, digging into his pocket for a moment. “So, I think it would probably be a good idea if we swapped numbers- to organise something, of course, just to keep in contact more easily.” There was something odd about his face as he pulled his phone out of his pocket, but you didn’t have a chance to dwell on it before he was handing you the object and prompting you to fill in your information. Once you’d shared your contacts, you asked him if he’d like to wait at the shop for you to go retrieve his cape. The hero laughed, waving you off.
“Like I said, I didn’t even realise it was gone! You may as well keep it.” You went to protest, only to be cut off by his phone ringing in his hand. As he answered the call, he gave you an apologetic look, muttering softly to the person on the other side before hanging up. “Shoot, they need me back at the agency- here, I won’t have time to eat it now, so you may as well have my order. At least it won’t go to waste then, right?”
Without waiting for a response, he placed the bag in your hand and darted off, your jaw dropping as you looked after him. With a heavy sigh, you trudged home and set the takeaway on the kitchen counter, Chibi circling at your feet in excitement. Opening the bags to inspect what he’d bought, something fluttered in your chest when you saw the contents.
Lemillion had ordered the exact things you’d both had on the night you’d met.
--------------------------------------------------------------
This was getting ridiculous.
You shouldn’t be feeling like this about a man you’ve only met in person twice .
Lemillion was just too nice, too lovely, though, and as you texted back and forth in the weeks following your second meeting you couldn't help the little flip flops that your stomach went through when you saw his name light up your phone screen. The man was always so happy in his texts, so understanding when you ended up delving into the more serious discussions about your students.
It was playing absolute havoc on your heart.
It was finally the day before Lemillion would be coming into your afterschool class to meet your students, the whole thing set up as a surprise for the youngsters. Putting down your phone after sending him a text to confirm that everything was still good to go, you sighed and turned your hand over to stare at your soulmate mark. This wasn’t fair. There was someone out there for you, and here you were getting all worked up over a man way out of your league. You shook your head, letting your arm drop down onto your bed, curling up further onto your side and closing your eyes.
“What are you doing…? Just- stop it. It’ll never work. He probably already has his soulmate, so there’s no point…” Murmuring to yourself softly, your eyes shot open when your phone buzzed next to your face on the pillow. Lemillion’s name filled your screen, your heart kicking up a gear as you swiped to open the message.
Lemillion: All good on my end! As long as there’s no emergencies tomorrow, I should be there around 3! I can’t wait to see you!
And there was your heart, pounding even heavier as the chat bubbles came up again, signalling him typing once more.
Lemillion: And the kids, obviously! Haha, that’s the main thing tomorrow, isn’t it!
Your heart calmed down a little, but heat remained in your cheeks from his words. He hadn’t corrected himself, he’d just added on the kids. Did that mean-?
Groaning, you turned your face into your pillow. You really needed to stop this, damn it. You peeked one eye out when your phone buzzed with an alert. Tapping on the notification, you were taken to a news page about a fight that had broken out earlier in the day. Your heart swelled when you caught sight of a certain blonde hero, a video showing him engaged in a hand to hand fight with a villain that was attempting to rob a bank. The villain couldn’t land a single hit, Lemillion’s permeation quirk frustrating him more and more as the hero kept punching him over and over. Eventually, the villain fell to the floor after a particularly solid hit to the face, knocked out and drooling on the floor.
The determined look in Lemillion’s eyes throughout the fight only made you admire him more, his drive to protect the civilians from harm and save as many people as possible… He truly was an inspiration. You tapped out of the video, going back to your messages with the hero. Sighing once again, you decided to turn in.
After sending him a thumbs up and wishing him goodnight, you plugged your phone in and turned over, closing your eyes once more and attempting to fall asleep so you wouldn’t be completely knocked out the next day. The last thoughts in your mind swirled around him, head filled with visions of his eyes, the sounds of his laugh.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Hot. It was so hot, sweat dripping down your spine as you perched on the edge of the bed, your ass raised high and your face buried in the covers. Hands were clasped around your waist, big and reassuring as the man leaned forward to place kisses across your shoulders, a whine sticking in your throat as you arched into him. You felt his lips stretch into a smile at your movements before he straightened, one of his hands leaving your waist to move between your legs, the tip of his finger circling your clit and forcing a moan from your chest. Starting at a teasing pace, his finger gradually got faster, making your legs shake and hands grasp the sheets where they were stretched above your head.
Somehow you were already dripping wet, your walls aching to be filled, clenching around nothing. A deep chuckle met your ears as he removed his hand, the feeling of something much thicker taking its place as he rubbed the head of his cock against your clit. Trying to push back against him, you gasped when he softly swatted at your ass, laughing once again.
Your wishes were granted when you felt him start to push into you, your jaw dropping open at the stretch of him- long, thick and heavy inside you. He gave you a minute to adjust to him, before he started to move. His thighs hit against your ass with each pump of his hips, leaving you achingly empty when he drew back and pulling moans from you when he pushed back in.
“Always take me so well, baby, so good…”
--------------------------------------------------------------
You jolted awake, sweat covering your skin and the sheets kicked off around your legs. Chest heaving, you reached up to wipe the sweat from your brow, noting the mess of wetness between your thighs.
That voice… That was Lemillion…
You shook your head, reaching over to grab your phone and check the time. With only about 20 minutes before you had to get up to get ready for work anyway, you switched off your alarm and slunk into the shower to clean up. It felt so real, the warmth of his hands on your skin almost lingering on you even in the heat of the shower.
After staying under the hot spray for much longer than was strictly necessary, you managed to pull yourself together and sat down for a small breakfast, wondering how the fuck you were going to look Lemillion in the eyes today after that dream. Taking a deep breath, you closed your eyes and forced yourself to calm down.
Damn it, I’m a professional! I can do this.
Breakfast cleared, you grabbed your bag and your files, patting Chibi on the head softly before leaving for the day, the dog looking up at you with a huff to see you off.
--------------------------------------------------------------
“What’s the surprise, huh? We wanna know!”
“Why’d we gotta wait ‘till after school? Tell us!”
“ Please? ”
The kids were practically frothing at the mouth when you told them you had a surprise waiting for them during their last official lesson of the day, many of them getting frustrated when you refused to tell them what was happening during your session after official school hours ended. While most of the kids in this class had a good handle on their quirks, there were more in here that struggled than any other class so for the time being you had a group session with them one day a week. The kids with more difficulty had individual sessions with you on other days, like Mika.
Your eyes drifted over to her where she sat quietly in the corner of the class, fiddling with a keychain on her backpack. As the other kids began packing up their things, you wandered over to where she was sitting and crouched down to her height, smirking when you realised what she was messing with.
A Lemillion keychain.
“Do you like Lemillion, Mika?” The little girl jumped at your voice, but smiled when she realised you were asking her about her accessory. The smile spread as she looked down at it and nodded, her fingers tracing the raised metal that framed a cartoon version of the hero. You pulled the sleeves of your cardigan further over your wrists as you raised a brow at her.
“He’s my favourite! He’s strong, and nice, and he saves so many people!” Resting your hand on the top of her head softly, you gave her a grin. “I wanna be a hero like him! I wanna save lotsa people just like Lemillion!”
“I just know you can do it, Mika! Work hard, and you can be just like him!” You straightened and headed back towards the door, leaning against the frame as you waited for the kids to be ready to leave. A buzzing in your pocket had you pulling out your phone.
Lemillion: I’m in the gym, ready to go! Can’t wait!
Placing your phone back into your pocket, you clapped your hands as the kids lined up in front of you, getting their attention. They quieted down quickly, eager to find out what their surprise was. You led them easily through the school grounds until you got to the gym, pausing outside the door and clearing your throat as you turned to your group.
“Okay guys, I need you to listen to me closely! Your surprise is in here, and I know you’re all gonna be excited, but please remember your manners, okay?” Murmurs erupted through the group, brows furrowing in confusion until you opened the door and ushered them in. Collective gasps filled the room as the group finally saw their prize: Lemillion, in the flesh, standing in the middle of the gym. Your eyes strayed to Mika, taking in the shining of her eyes and the way her jaw dropped before she looked back at you. She grinned, a look mirrored on your own face, before her eyes returned to her hero.
The next hour or so was mostly Lemillion fielding questions, signing things and hyping the kids up, many of them leaving with their parents afterwards with smiles filling their faces, as well as new determination. You had to hand it to him- he’d been right about this encouraging the kids, but there was one more thing you wanted to squeeze out of the experience.
“Mika?” the girl in question looked up at you, still clutching her backpack with careful hands. Lemillion had signed it for her, and you had a feeling that it was now her prized possession. “Can you come here for a moment?”
Having already cleared an extra fifteen minutes with her parents, you knew this would be just what the girl needed to help with her quirk. As she approached, you looked over to Lemillion once again, meeting his eyes and tilting your head down towards her. A look of understanding filled his face as he walked towards you, his smile returning as he approached Mika and yourself. Mika looked sheepish, especially now that everyone else had left, but Lemillion gave her a soft smile as he crouched down.
“Hiya Mika! I hear you’ve been having a little trouble with your quirk?” The girl’s smile fell, her eyes drifting down to the floor as she nodded her head. “Well, would you believe me if I told you that I had a really hard time with my quirk when I was your age?”
Her eyes shot up to meet his, shaking her head slowly. The smile never left his face as he began to explain his quirk to her in a little more detail, telling her how dangerous it had been for him at first. Mika’s eyes shined at the information, her fists clenching slightly in front of her chest.
“It was hard work, because even though my pops has the same quirk, he never learned how to use it like I do! I had to figure it out all on my own, sorta like how you’re figuring out your quirk too! And a lot of the time I was scared of my quirk, so me and you are practically the same!”
Mika froze, her eyes widening. You held your breath, hoping beyond all hope that this was what she needed to get her out of the slump she’d been drifting into. Lemillion tilted his head with a broad smile, and Mika’s eyes filled with tears as she smiled back at him. Her posture straightened as she swiped at her eyes, that same determined glint in them that you’d seen on the other students. She gave him an intent nod, sniffling slightly.
“I’ll work hard, Lemillion! Just like you!” Mika’s parents entered just as she made her bold claim, Lemillion laughing and ruffling her hair as he stood up. They came over, thanking the hero profusely and chatting for a moment before ushering a highly excited Mika from the gym. You heaved a sigh of relief as the door swung shut behind them, resting your hands on your hips as you swung your head around to look at Lemillion.
“Thank you for that, I was really struggling to get through to her but I think you did it!” A smile on your face, you rubbed at one of your arms with your other hand, a little bashful. “I think she’ll be okay thanks to you. Another citizen saved, Lemillion.”
Lemillion grinned, giving you a thumbs up and nodding his head. As you helped him pack up, you kept feeling his eyes on you, always averting when you turned to make eye contact. When you finished, he cleared his throat and approached you, a faint dusting of pink on his cheeks.
“Thanks for letting me do this! It was super fun, and I think it helped the kids a lot.” You nodded to him, giving him a smile in return. As you exited the gym with your things, Lemillion holding the door for you, you looked up to see the sky darkening with clouds rather quickly. He came up beside you, letting the door swing shut behind him and glancing up himself. “Oh shoot, looks like it’s gonna rain pretty hard… Did you walk here?”
You nodded your head, searching through your bag for your umbrella and raising it with a flourish once you dragged it from the depths. A frown seemed to be cemented on Lemilion’s face, making you raise a brow at him. “I’ll be fine, it’s only about fifteen minutes from here if you know the shortcuts like I do!” He shook his head once, placing his fists on his hips as he sighed and looked at the floor, only raising his head again when you made a questioning noise.
“Only one thing for it. I’ll have to walk you home again to make sure you get there safely.” His words made your jaw drop, a scoff escaping before you could stop it. A grin snuck onto his face once again, that same pinkness returning to his cheeks. “It’s my duty as a hero, and it’s starting to get late! Don’t say no- I’ll do it either way so you may as well accept it.”
With a sigh, you decided that maybe walking home with him again wasn’t so bad. The fluttering in your chest was impossible to ignore, and it gave you more time with the hero so- who were you to complain, really?
--------------------------------------------------------------
Ten minutes later, you were sure he’d regret his actions.
He was dripping wet, the rain having come down hard and fast shortly into your walk and the wind picking up to the point where your umbrella was useless. You weren’t faring much better yourself, trying to shelter your bag as best you could with all your files inside it. The duffel bag he had with him was a little more resistant to water, but even that would only go so far and you could see the bag changing colour as the water started to seep into it. When you finally saw your house in the distance, you sped up a little, jerking your head toward the door when you finally got there and trudging into the hallway with a groan, Lemillion following you in for a brief respite from the rain.
Looking up at him with his hair flopping into his eyes limply, water dripping off it, you couldn’t help but admire him. He still had a sparkle in his eyes even as he shivered slightly, trying to wring out his cape a little in the entryway to not let it drip all over your floor. Chibi came barrelling over, sniffing at the newcomer with intent as he realised someone had come home. Lemillion smiled broadly as he bent down, stroking the top of the pom’s head and tickling under his chin.
“Hey little guy! Good to see you again!” You dropped your bag to the floor, looking at the hero with a scrutinising eye. He turned to you, tilting his head at your study of him and looking down at his outfit with furrowed brows. “What? Is something wrong?” “Are you done for the day or do you have to rush off?”
He blinked at you. You blinked back at him.
When he finally shook his head no, you nodded yours and started removing your shoes.
“You can shower and wait here for the rain to stop if you want, don’t want a hero like you catching a cold, now do we?” You tried to sound as nonchalant as possible, though your heart was thundering in your chest. Would he take this the wrong way? You just didn’t want to be the reason he got sick, and it really was throwing it down outside. He seemed to hesitate, making heat rise to your face as you finally wriggled a boot off. “You don’t have to, but I just thought I’d offer.”
When you looked up at him, his face had softened, making your heart thud painfully for a second at the look in his eyes. He sighed, reaching up to rub at the back of his head again.
(You definitely didn’t admire the way his arm flexed. Nope. No sir.)
( You did. )
“Y’know, I think that’d be gre-” His phone rang in the side pocket of his duffel bag, making him wince as he checked the ID. Tamaki . He raised a finger to you, an apologetic look on his face as he spoke quietly into the phone. You tried not to listen in, frowning as you headed further into your apartment and scratched at Chibi’s head softly when he followed you.
Tamaki. That was the pro hero Sun Eater, Lemillion’s close friend- or were they more than friends? They’d always been very close from what the tabloids reported, even close enough for a few to claim that they were together romantically, but it was never confirmed. What if they were soulmates? It would make sense, they often spent days off together, often worked together extremely well on missions, so it wasn’t that much of a stretch…
“Sorry ‘bout that! I- uh- I have to go meet someone, he really needs me right now and-” “It’s fine! You go do whatever you gotta do, no harm, no foul! Just try and get out of the rain fast, okay? I don’t want you getting sick.” Your words came out fairly neutral, you hoped, the smile on your face only slightly forced. Lemillion frowned, another apology spilling from his lips as he left your house quickly.
You looked down at Chibi with a sigh, the dog tilting his head at you and wagging his tail slowly.
“I’m screwed, aren’t I?”
Chibi simply huffed, heading over to his food bowl and placing a paw on it, looking at you imploringly. You shook your head fondly, going to feed the little gremlin before he got too grumpy with you.
--------------------------------------------------------------
How you ended up here was beyond your comprehension, really.
Your talks with Lemillion never ceased after the meet and greet. The hero always found time to text you, or call if he needed his hands free while he was cooking or something, forming a rather… odd friendship? There was no one else you spoke to as often, but you also still hardly knew the man. Your little crush, however, didn’t care in the slightest and continued to grow with each day. Trying to hide it was getting easier with time, though, the way you two spoke becoming more and more comfortable, and you didn’t understand why he was really bothering with you in the first place. When you asked him, he had simply chuckled and said a very cryptic I just have to! I’m not too sure why, but I always follow my instincts!
Whatever that meant.
The colder months had creeped in, the leaves changing colour rapidly and the weather turning almost before your eyes. Lemillion- no, Togata , as he had started insisting you called him- was telling you about an upcoming hero gala while you cooked dinner. You had him on speaker phone as you cooked, the man walking home from his patrol as he chatted away. Not properly listening as you cooked, you only caught the end of what he was saying.
“-So you should come too! It’d be fun, and I can introduce you to the others!”
You choked, lowering the heat on your stove as you scrambled over to your phone on the opposite countertop.
“I’m sorry- what?! You want me to-?”
“Yeah! I think it’d be great, don’t you?” Swallowing thickly, your tongue felt too big for your mouth and you sputtered slightly. “Nejire has been asking about you, and Tamaki wants to meet you too! Plus we can hang out properly for a while, please come with me?”
Your face flushed, your heart kicking up a gear as you thought about it. He wanted to go with you? You’d be out of your element around a bunch of heroes but- you couldn’t deny that you wanted to spend more time with him…
“Sure…?” Togata’s answering cheer had you smiling softly at your phone, shaking your head slowly in fondness as you returned to cooking your dinner.
Which led you to the situation of incomprension.
Weeks later, you’d procured a beautiful long sleeved dress, just thick enough to stave off the cool temperature without a jacket so you could be comfortable. You’d made your way to the venue in a car Togata ordered for you, texting him on the way and smiling when he said he’d meet you at the entrance. As the car pulled up, you saw him standing at the edge of the curb and your breath caught.
The suit he was wearing was perfectly tailored, sharp lines and fabric clenched around his thick arms and thighs. His face lit up as the car stopped, his hand already outstretched to get the door for you. When you stepped out, his jaw dropped as he took you in.
“W-Wow! You look amazing!” Heat flooded your system at his words, forcing you to look down and tuck a stray lock of hair behind your ear.
“You don’t look so bad yourself, Togata…” He chuckled as he closed the door, gesturing toward the venue with a grin. You made your way inside with him, looking around nervously at the expensive decor of the hotel the event was being held at. There were heroes everywhere; Creati, Mirko, Chargebolt and- holy shit was that Deku ?
What the hell were you doing here? You were nothing in comparison to all of these people, saviours of humanity and fucking heroes and-
And then Togata grasped your wrist softly, and it felt like the world stood still. All you could feel was the warmth of his hand, the tension leaching from your body almost instantly. The noise in the room became a dull echo in the background, all of your senses focused on that single point of contact.
Heart pounding for an entirely different reason now, you looked up at Togata with a curious face. He smiled down at you, tugging your wrist gently and inclining his head outward one of the quieter corners of the room. As you followed him, you frowned down at his hand, prompting him to drop it.
(You missed the warmth of his hand almost instantly, but you’d never tell anyone.)
“Sorry, Tamaki and Nejire are this way. Tamaki isn’t exactly fond of the big crowds at these kinda things, so you can usually find him in the corners.” Togata had to speak up a little for you to hear him over the din, but as the crowd thinned and you approached the edge of the room, the noise levelled out to be much quieter. Just ahead, leaning against a wall, you recognized Togata’s friends and swallowed thickly. Nejire, as you more commonly knew the hero- looked absolutely stunning in her seafoam green dress, her shoulders bared elegantly. Her hair fell in soft curls around her shoulders, wobbling slightly with every pat on the back that she gave the other person standing against the wall.
Sun Eater looked like he’d rather be anywhere else- at least, from what you could tell from where he was seemingly trying to become one with the wall by attaching his face to it. Nejire patting his back seemed to be doing absolutely nothing to make him feel better, unintelligible words falling from his mouth in a near constant mumble. As you and Togata approached, Nejire spotted you and immediately lit up, smacking Sun Eater’s back a little harder.
“Ooooh! Amajiki! They’re here! Look!” Nejire smiled brilliantly as you both came to a stop beside her, finally ceasing her assault of the shy hero. Mirio went to introduce you, but had hardly gotten your name out before she was cutting him off. “I know who she is! Oh wow! We’ve heard so much about you, it’s so nice to finally have a face for the name! I love your hair, and that dress is to die for! Hey, Togata has told us about your quirk and stuff, what’s it like working with the kids? Was it hard to get started in your line of work? How did you know you wanted to do it? Have you been-” “Okay! Nejire, let her breathe!” Togata ended the questioning, placing his hand on your shoulder gently. “This isn’t twenty questions, we’re just here to have a good time. How are you holding up, Tamaki?”
The man in question groaned, turning his face to the side slightly but still not turning around. Togata left your side to go to his friend, placing a gentle hand on his back and leaning in to continue his conversation, leaving you and Nejire alone. She leaned toward you, a grin on her face that you nervously returned.
“Y’know, Mirio talks about you all the time . Like- he’ll be walkin’ around and see something and just- talk about how much you’d like it! It’s adorable!” You flushed at her words, looking down at the floor and grasping one of your wrists with the opposite hand.
He talked about you? It almost sounded like he- but there was no way! You really hadn’t done anything to earn Togata’s attention. He was more likely just excited about having a new friend.
That must be it.
Togata coaxed Nejire away before you could respond, enlisting her help to get Sun Eater away from the wall. It took a few minutes, the two of them making you giggle at some of the ways they tried to get him to move, but eventually they got the reluctant man away and you all headed into the main hall of the venue.
And it was stunning.
Tall ceilings, gold ornaments, thick red velvet curtains. You were miles out of your element.
The event was being held as a fundraiser- an auction where all of the items would be sold and the money would go to charity, and it seemed they were ready to start selling items off. You nudged Togata and pointed towards the refreshments table, letting him know to come find you there after the auction part of the evening. Grabbing a drink and settling into a chair at one of the tables, you watched as pro heroes bid their money on seemingly useless objects for people who made as much money as they did- spa hampers, signed merch from other heroes, tickets to a local play; all things donated by local businesses and the other heroes themselves.
As the heroes were preoccupied, you took a moment to admire the room, and the outfits of some of the heroes and their dates. Even the waiting staff were dressed to the nines in well pressed suits and-
Wait.
… Why are there so many waiters gathered by the doors?
Pausing mid sip of your drink, you tilted your head and frowned at the three sets of double doors, watching as the waiters all seemed to have some kind of meeting. You placed your drink down on the table, rising slowly when the waiters spread out across the doors. A person in front of each one leaned their hands against the closed doors, and your heart rate picked up as one of them sealed the door by turning it to stone. Another door became locked shut when roots and vines cracked through the wood, knotting around each other until it was nearly a solid wall, and the last one was encased in what looked like a thick purple paste. Some of the partygoers nearby cried out, prompting the heroes to turn and notice what was going on. A few of the waiters grabbed nearby guests, grasping their hands behind their backs and holding up syringes right over their necks.
Unfortunately, you were standing near one of them. You gasped as your arms were grabbed, twisting behind your back uncomfortably and a needle held just above where your pulse was pounding.
“Hello, heroes! Hope you don’t mind if we crash the party!” The heroes swung their heads back to the stage just in time to see the MC for the auction fall to the floor, blood dripping from a wound on his temple. A large man stood behind him, a cane in his hand with a carved raven on the handle- red liquid dripping from the beak. Draped in a dark cape and a tailored suit, thick sunglasses on his face, the man was grinning widely at the group of heroes before him. “Please, don’t move a muscle! If you do, I’ll be forced to do something- well, just awful. That means you, Deku! And you, Dynamight!” The two heroes in question had moved to the front of the crowd, but halted when the man reached up and took hold of his glasses. The villain slid them down his nose slowly, looking down at the two top heroes with a sick grin. Dynamight growled, moving his arms to his sides, his palms lighting up as he prepared to attack the villain-
Until it suddenly stopped. With a green glow surrounding his body, Dynamight’s body began to turn an odd grayish hue. Deku turned to his friend with a gasp, panic filling his features as the number two hero was turned to stone.
“Like I said- I don’t want to have to petrify so many of Japan’s top heroes in one go, after all! Not to mention- all those lovely hostages around the room would suffer so much if you disobey me…” The villain’s words seemed to echo with how quiet the hall got, your chest beginning to ache in fear as your eyes searched the crowd. Togata’s eyes met yours, his gaze focused entirely on you. Through your tears you could see how tense he was, his teeth bared in a grimace as he realised he couldn’t get to you. His head swung to look over at the villain, your eyes widening at the absolute rage that seemed to vibrate through him. You’d never seen him like this before, how could this be the same man who called you in tears a few weeks ago when he watched a video online about some rescue dogs?
At the front of the crowd, Deku had turned back to the villain. His face was grim, a deep frown directed straight at the stage and his eyes hardened.
“What have you done to Kacchan?!” “Now, now, don’t worry! I’ll be more than happy to undo it once we get what we came for! And I hate to be so boring as to ask for it, but- we want your money. You came to donate to charity, correct? Well, I have a very worthy charity case for you to donate to! All you have to-”
A cry sounded from within the crowd, one of the lower ranked heroes launching himself at one of the waiters nearby with a hostage- if you remembered correctly, it was his date. All three of them hit the ground, his date scrabbling back to him as the waiter moved away quickly.
To your dismay, the waiter that was next along jammed the needle into the neck of his hostage.
The guest began to scream immediately, the woman’s skin starting to sizzle and steam as she was thrown away from the waiter, her hands scratching at any bare patch of skin and ripping it off of her, as if it was barely even attached. She looked to be in absolute agony, bubbles of skin growing on her face before they popped.
It was horrifying.
Tears were falling thick and fast down your cheeks, your body shaking with fear. That same needle was hovering above your neck, above the necks of about 20 people in the room, and it looked like even saving one would result in the death of another.
“I did ask you all to stay perfectly still, you know. I wanted to avoid this…” The villain shook his head in mocking disapproval, as if the woman’s screams weren’t still echoing. “Now, as I was saying… We have a lovely bank account just waiting to be filled with all your precious money, and it’s for a very good cause. Me and all my friends here could really use it!”
The screams had finally died down. The woman was lying on the floor, her skin mostly melted off, still steaming in places. Your eyes found Togata’s once more, his own looking frantic as it really set in that he couldn’t do anything, he couldn’t save you or anyone right now .
You could see the same look on the faces of all the other heroes present.
Deku looked like he was going to combust, Nejire-Chan and Sun Eater looked at each other with furrowed brows, as if they were trying to figure out their next step.
Togata couldn’t take his eyes off you.
There was a level of desperation there that you didn’t quite understand. Even though the other heroes looked upset at not being able to help their dates and friends, Togata seemed especially upset when his eyes were latched onto your figure.
You hated it.
That look in his eyes, it was so unlike his usual smiles. Something inside of you bristled at the lack of brightness in his expression. Blinking a few times to try and clear the tears from your eyes, you made sure he was looking at you before giving him a small smile. Reassurance.
It’s okay.
Togata’s eyes looked watery, although you couldn’t really tell from this distance, before he suddenly broke eye contact. He grit his teeth, his eyes screwing shut for a moment as he swung his head to glare at the villain.
“All this?! All this just for money ?! You just killed someone !” Togata’s voice cut through the silence, the heroes around him gasping at his outburst. He was shaking with anger, his eyes blazing as the villain simply laughed.
“Ah-! Not quite! I didn’t kill anybody! After all, I did warn you all that I’d have to do something awful if you didn’t listen!” The villain sounded so full of glee, so proud of what he’d done here.”Besides, it’s only cause of this stupid hero system that people like me struggle to get work and need to resort to this shit! If we could all use our quirks freely then things would be different!”
… wait.
The villain was still ranting, but you couldn’t even hear him anymore. Use your quirk freely… What if you could influence someone? Your eyes roved over the villain, unsure about how this would go… you didn’t have a licence to do hero work, but you did have something of a concession for using your quirk due to working with the kids. No one would even know, there’s no visual representation with your quirk on you , it only shows around the person you’re influencing. So the only people in the room that would know it was you would be Togata, Nejire and Sun Eater… You didn’t know if you were covered with your partial-licence, but surely you had to try.
The other risk was whether or not taking the leader out would impact the waiters. You were hopeful that if you took him out of the equation, in the chaos they’d just drop their hostages, but there was always the risk that they’d just inject their hostages anyway. You had to get a message to someone, somehow…
Togata looked at you again. Locking eyes with him, you schooled your face into the most neutral expression you could, and activated your quirk. A subtle blue glow, almost like a very tiny glitter shower, began around Togata’s ears.
Calm. Collected. Relax.
His face melted from it’s disgruntled rage, his mind clearing for a moment as you stopped your quirk, your eyes shooting to the other hostages and back to him before looking at the villain again. When you looked back at Togata, he didn’t seem to understand for a moment before it seemed to click.
A nod. A smile.
Togata turned and kept his voice to a low murmur, saying something to the other heroes as subtly as he could while the villain kept yelling about the inadequacy of hero society. You really hoped that he got your idea right.
Please.
When Togata finally looked back at you and nodded, you realised that many of the heroes seemed to be bracing themselves, each one angling their body slowly towards one of the hostages. Relief flooded through you as you turned your eyes toward the villain at the front, focusing on him directly.
Activating your quirk, you were suddenly filled with a chaotic swirl of emotions. What this man felt wasn’t just rage, there was sadness, fear, pain. You didn’t want to do this to him, but there was no other choice. You grunted softly as the blue glow, much stronger this time as you were concentrating so hard, began to sparkle around his ears.
Relax. Calm. Peace.
He stopped talking. The man’s face, previously screwed up in anger, relaxed swiftly as he stared off into space for a moment and you held onto his emotions as tightly as you could.
A moment was all the heroes needed.
All at once, the heroes jumped, each one launching towards a hostage and knocking the waiters over in the same breath, a coordinated attack. At the same moment, Deku jumped at the main villain, tackling and subduing the man as you finally let your control go, a splitting headache taking up residence in your mind immediately.
Togata came for you, because of course he did.
His fist flew past your head and rammed into the waiter’s, the man behind you dropping the needle and falling to the floor, the hand gripped around your wrists ripping your dress as he fell. You stumbled forward, Togata’s arms pulling you into his chest immediately and securing you there. Sobbing immediately, you buried your face into him and clutched at his shirt, eyes screwed closed.
“I knew my soulmate would be smart, but you’re a genius, you know that?”
... What?
You opened your eyes, ready to question him when your eyes caught on your soul mark, bared thanks to your ripped sleeve on your dress.
Glowing.
Eyes widening, you looked up at Togata, seeing the soft smile on his face even as around you the other heroes were busy dealing with the waiters (who had immediately panicked at their leader being taken down with no fighting) and working on getting the doors open again. He chuckled at your confusion, one of his hands leaving your waist to reach up and cup your cheek carefully.
“You-? But-? What?” Your brain seemed to grind to a halt, nothing making sense even as you absolutely relished in the warmth of his hand on your cheek and his arm around you. Togata burst out laughing this time, leaning back enough to put a bit of space between you both. He reached for the hem of his shirt, lifting it slightly until his lower abdominals were on display. You would have blushed if your eyes hadn’t locked onto the glowing mark on his hip.
A little seed, with a sprout coming out of it.
You frowned, looking back up at him and shaking your head slowly until he started speaking again.
“I had a feeling it was you when we first met. It felt like coming home even though we’d never even seen each other before… But I didn’t understand until you explained your job. You’re nurturing the next generation of heroes, your own little seeds, helping them grow. That’s when I really knew it.” Togata looked down at his hip again, smiling fondly at the mark and then back at you. “You’re amazing. I’m so glad it’s you.”
Your eyes filled with tears again at his words, at the soft grin he gave you as he lowered his shirt again, at the pure joy that you could feel radiating off him now that you were out of danger. It was too much, you couldn’t handle it, all the emotions of the day catching up to you as you sobbed. Togata’s eyes immediately widened in panic, his arms shooting around you again and pulling you close.
Comfort. Safety. Love.
Your quirk was working on it’s own, opening you up to Togata, letting you feel his emotions and pouring your own back into him, his arms stiffening as they registered and he realised they weren’t his own feelings this time, that you felt the same .
How could you not?
He leaned you back again, hands cupping your face and wiping the tears from your cheeks as he beamed down at you, uncaring that your face was soaked, uncaring that your makeup was running-
He leaned in, and he kissed you.
Just like before, the world stopped.
There was nothing other than you, and him, and the fact that you’d been denying it for months but he was your soulmate . You finally felt like you could breathe after being underwater for so long, like you fit perfectly against him, in his arms. It was intoxicating.
The kiss, while it started loving and almost chaste, a relief that you’d made it through all this, quickly became more desperate as you realised that this man was yours .
And then Nejire cleared her throat.
Togata and you broke apart, faces flushed with heat as you stared at her wide eyed.
“I’m so psyched that you guys are together and all, but we kinda need to finish up here you two! C’mon, you can suck each other’s faces later !” Nejire walked towards the (now open-when did that happen?) doors, making you realise that in the few minutes you two had carved out together in the chaos, everything had calmed down. Police were escorting the villain and his waiter-lackeys from the building, the heroes were giving their statements to other officers, and ambulances were arriving to help the hostages. Togata helped you toward them, noting how weak you’d become after using your quirk under the circumstances.
What followed was a few annoying hours of being checked over by the EMT’s, police taking statements, and a lot of suggestive looks between you and Togata. He knew what he was doing, the bastard, taking off his suit jacket and placing it around your shoulders, his smell surrounding you in both comfort and frustration. Rolling up his sleeves so you could see the muscles in his forearms flexing.
Now that you weren’t yelling at yourself for being attracted to him, it seemed like the flood gates had opened. You were openly ogling him even as they announced that you were free to go, your eyes laser focused on him. As soon as you were standing you made your way straight over, Togata’s eyes catching your movement before you reached him and prompting a smile.
It wasn’t one of his usual smiles.
It seemed that, like you, Togata was feeling the effects of that kiss, an edge of hunger in his eyes and on the curve of his lips that had you aching in your core. As you came to a stop in front of him, he reached for you automatically, pulling you into his side and resting his hand on your hip to keep you pressed against him. He bid the heroes he was talking to goodbye quickly after that, pulling his phone out to get a car called and looking down at you when you were waiting at the curb for it to pull up.
“Can I take you home? Wanna make sure you get in safe.”
You’ve never nodded so fast in your life.
--------------------------------------------------------------
As soon as your door was closed, he was on you.
Togata pulled you toward him, wrapping his arms around you and planting his lips on yours, your own arms wrapping around his neck as you pressed yourself against him. The adrenaline from nearly dying had worn off, but in its wake a new excitement was building in your veins. The thought that this man was all yours was still swirling through your mind, and now that you were pressed up against all that muscle you were aching between your thighs.
Togata pressed you against the wall in the hallway, parting from you and panting heavily, his forehead pressed to yours. Your hands moved to cup his cheeks, your nose nudging against his gently as you tried to reconnect your lips, feeling him smirk at your insistence.
“Togata…” A soft utterance of his name had him growling, pressing his lips to yours once again. His hands smoothed down from their place at your waist, moving over your ass and squeezing gently. When he pulled away, he pulled your hips against him, letting you feel his hardness against your stomach.
“Mirio- Call me Mirio, okay?” His voice had dropped, a roughness to it that wasn’t usually present that made a thrill run down your spine. You nodded, leaning back against the wall and looking up at him with hooded eyes. Mirio took your hand, lifting your wrist- the one with your soul mark on it- to his lips without letting his eyes leave yours, and brushed his lips across the mark itself. Your lashes fluttered at the soft contact, the air around you charging with each movement, your chest beginning to heave.
“Mirio, please…” With his eyes sparkling, Mirio lowered his head slowly, moving past your lips to your jawline, his hand coming up to tilt your head further and allow himself better access to your neck. You gasped as his lips and tongue assaulted your pulse point, your hips nudging toward him in pleasure, the feeling making you throb in need. “M-Mirio, bedroom, n-now…”
The distance seemed to evaporate with how quickly Mirio dragged you through the house, following your directions between heated kisses. As soon as you were in the bedroom, Mirio flung his jacket from your shoulders with a solid yank.
“I really love you in my clothes, but I also really want you out of ‘em right now…” He murmured against your lips, reaching for the buttons on his shirt and swiftly undoing them, shrugging it off as soon as he could. Your hands had a mind of their own as they roamed his chest, dragging over his nipples and relishing in the little twitch he gave.
Mirio’s hands moved to your hips once again, starting to drag your dress up by bunching the fabric at your waist bit by bit. Despite the heated atmosphere, and how much the both of you wanted to move this along, Mirio was taking his time where he could, teasing you when he finally pulled it up and over your head. Once your hands were free, they immediately moved to his belt, working it open as he dipped his head down to reconnect your lips. Your dress fell to the floor, his hands fastening to your waist once more as he moved you backwards towards your bed. Mirio helped you lay back, before straightening and undoing his pants properly, letting them drop to the floor and leaving him in some rather tight boxer briefs.
The outline of his cock was daunting, but it made your mouth water with how thick it looked, the idea of it stretching you forcing wetness to pool between your legs. Mirio made to step forward and out of his pants-
Only to get his feet tangled and fall over, barely catching himself on the edge of the bed.
You burst into giggles, covering your mouth to stifle them when Mirio shot you a look of exasperation. He struggled to unhook his feet from the fabric, groaning in frustration before ultimately deciding to use his quirk, letting the fabric pass through his feet as he crawled onto the bed.
You reached for him as soon as he was done stepping out of his pants, grasping his shoulder and neck to bring his lips back to yours. With only your panties and his briefs in the way, you could feel him pressed against you so much clearer, the pressure on your clit forcing a whine from deep in your chest.
Mirio smirked into your kiss, rolling his hips forward as he settled between your legs, eliciting a gasp that he took full advantage of, slipping his tongue into your mouth.
Having his hands roving over your body, feeling each and every curve, squeezing at your flesh- you felt like you were on fire, Mirio’s desire for you evident in the way his hips rolled desperately against you, the cling of your panties to your soaked core betraying just how much you wanted him in return.
“Been thinking of you like this for so long…” Mirio muttered between kisses, moving his kisses back to your neck, down to your collarbone and nibbling at the flesh there. Your back arched, Mirio taking advantage of the opportunity once again to reach behind you and start undoing your bra.
After a moment of struggle that elicits giggles form the both of you, he finally gets the damn thing undone and drags it off. He stops for a moment, leaning back and admiring the view of you utterly debauched below him, eyes hooded, lips kiss swollen, chest heaving. Reaching to cup your cheek for a moment, he rubs your cheekbone with his thumb and chews at his lip for a moment.
“I don’t- I’m not super experienced , if you know what I mean…” His face flushed at his admission, eyes focused on tracing your jawline instead of making eye contact. You giggled at him, reaching up to cover his hand with your own as you turned to nuzzle into it.
“I’m hardly the queen of experience either, you know. But this already feels so much better than anything else…” Mirio smiled at your words, finally looking into your eyes again. He leaned down, nuzzling at your breast for a moment before sucking your nipple into his mouth, dragging his teeth slowly over the peak and watching as your face contorted in pleasure.
The air between you became charged with tension once again, Mirio’s hand moving between your thighs and softly stroking at your slit over your panties. He groaned as he felt how soaked you were already, his teeth biting down a little harder on your nipple. Your legs flexed around his hips in response, a soft moan escaping that he relished in.
He suddenly growled, leaning back and letting your nipple go with a soft pop as he focused on practically ripping your panties from your body. Considering he said he wasn’t overly experienced, the way he flipped the switch and had your knees by your ears, his mouth covering your cunt and eating you with fervor- you wouldn’t have thought he was even the same man.
You cried out at his assault, his tongue flicking over your clit between it’s journeys into your walls, his hands pressed behind your knees to keep you folded over. Hands flying to the sides of your head, you screwed the sheets up in your fists with how hard you gripped them. Your mouth hung open, pants and moans constantly falling from your lips as your eyes screwed shut, almost overwhelmed already. The pressure was already building so rapidly, the knot in your belly tightening by the second. You panted his name, Mirio’s efforts increasing even more when he heard your voice so strained.
When you finally crested the wave of pleasure, your head thrown back into the pillow, Mirio took every drop you gave him, your cunt crying out for something to fill it, aching with need. When he finally let you drop back to the bed, your legs flopping either side of his hips, you pushed up and latched your mouth to his instantly.
You’d never wanted someone so bad in your whole life, something in you snapping as you pressed up into him. Desperation laced your movements and you reached down, pushing his briefs down enough to free his cock and wrapping your hand around it, swallowing up his answering hiss and pulling him back on top of you, maneuvering your hips to line him up instantly.
Mirio’s hands flew to your hips, stilling their movements and ripping his lips from yours with a growl.
“You definitely-” “Mirio, if you don’t fuck me right now, I’ll take care of it myself. I have toys in that drawer.” He froze at your words, tilting his head as he processed your words. He shook his head, reaching down to replace your hand with his as he rubbed his cock up and down your slit, bumping against your clit to tease you.
“We’re revisiting that later, but right now…” Mirio pushed his hips forward, his jaw going slack as your walls engulfed him in slick heat. You yourself weren’t fairing much better, eyes rolling at how thick he was, at the little burn of the stretch even though you’d already come once, your wetness helping him slide home until he was filling you to the hilt.
Mirio waited for your go ahead, waiting until you gripped his shoulders tight and gasped out a please …
And then he started moving, and you were soaring.
The drag of his cock in your walls was heaven, his big hands gripping your hips and lifting you into each thrust and slamming his cock into that spongy spot inside you pulling sinful moans from your lips. Mirio watched your face as you writhed in pleasure, his heart hammering in his chest at finally being with his soulmate, your own heart pounding in time with his.
“So beautiful like this… you really were made for me, huh?” He punctuated his words with an especially harsh thrust that had your vision whiting out for a moment as you nodded, your nails digging into his shoulders making him hiss and screw his own eyes shut. The view above you was glorious, his broad chest and shoulders with their rolling muscles with every movement. His face, torn between watching you and enjoying his own pleasure, teeth bared with his efforts to make you feel good. You couldn’t take it, your climax approaching too rapidly, your legs tightening around his hips as you tried to gasp out a warning, to tell him you were close-
“ Fuck - I can feel you, baby, come for me, please …”
Your head threw back once again, throat bared to him as you were overcome by pleasure, your soul mark shining brightly for a moment as you clenched down onto him. He grunted through it, his own mark glowing as his hips stuttered, burying himself deep inside you as he filled your walls with white, until both of you bonelessly fell to the bed. Your marks glowed for a moment longer, before their lights slowly ebbed away, settling down once more.
Mirio panted above you, holding his weight up on his elbows so he wouldn’t crush you while you caught your breath too.
When he finally pulled out, you groaned at the feeling of emptiness as he pulled you into his arms, flopping onto his back beside you on the bed. You’d both need to clean up soon, go to bed properly, but as you stared at your soul mark resting against his chest, you couldn’t quite bring yourself to move just yet.
Looking up at Mirio, you smiled when you caught him already watching you, a cheeky grin on his face. Thinking back, you had no idea how you hadn’t figured it out sooner.
Mirio was of the purest, childlike glee. The sunshine of anyone’s life, whoever knew him could attest to that. Your mark made more sense than any other mark you’d seen in your life.
“... So... toys?”
...You were going to hit him, sunshine man or not.

cw: tangled au! reader wears a dress and has VERY long hair, geto as flynn ryder, reader as rapunzel featuring: geto suguru | 1 | 2
a/n: hello!! i hope you enjoy this au, i've loved this movie since i was a kid and rewatch it all the time! lmk how this is!!
Tumblr media
the sound of running footsteps could be heard as geto suguru ran across rooftops and into the room holding the crown in the royal castle. right before entering, they go over the plan once more.
"okay, tie me to the rope, when i get the crown i'll tug on it. pull me up," he states with his arms out, waiting to be tied.
with a shared look, the twins nod and tie geto off. removing the roof's tile, they slowly lower him in.
nearing the crown, geto is about to grab it but a guard's sneeze interrupts him. "allergies suck, right?" geto asks, taking the crown and placing it in his satchel.
"yeah, tell me about it." the guard agrees, with a light laugh. "hey! wait-" he yells, realizing the questions came from behind him.
"see ya!" geto calls out, and takes off with the satchel, the twins following close behind. "we got the crown, let's head back."
but of course, stealing the royal crown is never easy. because when the guards eventually catch up and corner the three thieves, they have to turn and run in the opposite direction.
they eventually reach a dead end and are forced to climb.
"boost me, and i'll pull you guys up." suguru says, turning to look at them. they share a look and say,
"give us the satchel."
"wh- are you serious? you don't trust me?" suguru says, with faux-betrayal shown on his face. the twins just stare at him with a blank stare.
"ow." he continues, handing the satchel to them.
they put their hands together and boost him onto the hill, one arm out in expectancy.
"sorry," suguru starts, "my hands are full." he shows the satchel and speeds off.
"geto!!" the twin yells, cursing said 18-year-old as he runs away.
.・。.・゜✭・.
suguru runs and runs and eventually finds a tree to hide behind. he looks to his left and sees a 'wanted' poster of himself.
"oh, no. no, no no. this is terrible," he mumbles to himself. "they fucked up my nose. so badly."
before he has the chance to mourn over the god-awful poster, a palace horse catches him and decides to play tag, chasing after him in an attempt to retrieve the stolen satchel.
the horse catches up and the two wrestle for the satchel, tripping over a log and running off the cliff in the process. they hold onto each other but are eventually broken apart when the log they're on hits a large branch.
.・。.・゜✭・.
at the same time somewhere else:
"(y/n)! let down your hair!" you hear your mother call out from below the tower.
"coming!" you yell, swinging your hair over a very strong nail in the door and letting your hair down.
your mother ties herself up, tugs on the hair, and you pull her up.
"oh (y/n)! doing the same task every day without fail must be so very tiring, right dear?" she says, twirling your hair around her finger.
"oh, it's nothing mother!" you respond cheerfully.
"then i don't know why it takes so long!!" she quips. "i'm just teasing, dear. loosen up!"
"uh, haha" you let out a nervous chuckle. "anyways! i have something very important thing to tell you!" you share, gleefully.
"(y/n), look in the mirror. do you know what i see? i see a very beautiful, responsible, and intelligent young woman." your mother starts, staring at herself. "oh, you're there too!" she laughs teasingly.
"oh! okay, well as i was saying-"
"(y/n), mother's feeling very run down, how about i comb you're hair." she half asks, half demands.
"of course!" you say, quickly setting up a chair for her and a stool for yourself. as she walks closer, you push her into the chair, shove a comb in one hand and your hair in the other.
"flower gleam and glow let your power shine, make the clock reverse, bring back what once was mine. heal what has been hurt, change the fate's design, save what has been lost, bring back what once was mine." you sing in one breath, your hair glowing and quickly fading to it's natural colour as quickly as it appeared.
"anyway! since you kinda keep cutting me off, i'll just say it! tomorrow's my birthday!!" you gleam, hugging your mother's arm.
"no, no, no, no. i clearly remember, your birthday was last year," she states, matter-of-factly, lightly shoving you off her arm.
"that's the thing about birthdays, they're an annual thing." you smile. "and what i really want for this birthday, and what i've wanted for every birthday..." you begin, mumbling.
"out with it." your mother demands, fed up with the mumbling.
"i want to see the floating lights!" you exclaim. "actually, i was hoping you would take me to see the floating lights." you correct, using you hair to pull back the curtains on the wall to reveal your painting.
"ah.. you mean the stars." she smiles.
"that's the thing. i've charted stars, and they're always constant. but these.. these happen on my birthday, and only on my birthday. and.. i can't help but feel they're meant.. for me.." you say, pulling back another curtain and showing a painting of stars.
letting out an exasperated sigh, your mother sits on the chair and states, "the outside world is a dangerous place (y/n), i've told you."
"i know but-"
"i knew one day you would want to leave the nest.." she starts, getting up.
"i knew someday you'd want to go explore.." she continues.
"but-"
"soon! but not yet, trust me pet." she interjects. "mother.. knows best." she finishes, leaving your questions unanswered.
"oh.. i see.." you respond, dejectedly. this causes her to pull you into a tight hug.
"(y/n). don't ever ask to leave this tower, again." she commands, coldly.
"okay.." you say.
"mother loves you very much dear," she sighs, wrapping her cloak around herself.
"i love you more," you respond, as she prepares to leave.
"i love you most." .・。.・゜✭・.
"i'll see you in a bit my flower" she calls out, waving as she reaches the bottom of the tower.
"i'll be here.." you mumble, resting your face on one hand and waving with the other.
.・。.・゜✭・.
after what feels like an eternity of running, suguru stumbles upon an empty tower in the middle of nowhere.
'perfect' he thinks, taking two sticks and climbing up along the wall.
"finally.." he starts, opening his satchel and pulling out the crown, staring at it lovingly. "alone at last.."
with a hit to the head from a frying pan, he's knocked out cold.

She was heartbroken when she saw my car outside, looking at the unfamiliar person who was in the front seat with me, Aliana in the back of the car. She had her gate open and waited outside, tirelessly crossing her arms.
Peter asked, “That’s your ex-wife?”
I nodded, sighing to myself. I should’ve just made Peter wait back at my apartment, I knew this wasn’t a good idea. But he was so persistent, how could I say no to him? He was too kind towards my daughter.
“Yeah,” I smiled at him, giving his hand a slight squeeze. “Don’t worry about it, we’re finalizing our divorce once I get the papers from her.”
“She looks drunk.”
“She’s always drunk.”
“Is that the reason why you left her?”
“There are many reasons actually,” I replied quietly, remembering the old times when I used to hurt. Like, really hurt. She knew that as well and even begged me to stay, her begging got old. “Anyway, that’s in the past now. I just need to bring Aliana inside and ask for the divorce papers.”
“And then we could get married after,” he turns to me with a happy smile, leaning in as he kissed me on the lips. I knew Natasha was watching from afar, I could sense her eyes lingering on us. Did I want her to stare? Yes, I let him kiss me at that moment for her to just get hurt. Besides, it wouldn’t hurt to get married right? “I love you, I’ll be waiting in the car.”
I carried Aliana and jumped out of the car, Natasha gave me a small smile and walked back inside with the gate closing. I whispered, “My friend is outside waiting, I think you should open the gate again.”
“I don’t want a robber sneaking inside my house,” she responded with sarcasm, which made me roll my eyes pathetically. She opens the big brown door to let me in. “Come inside, it’s getting cold.”
“I could just stay outside–”
“Y/n please,” she sighs, pinching her nose bridge hard. “I’m tired and I’m cold. I just want to get some sleep.”
“Why are you using that tone with me?” I asked with a small voice, looking down at my feet while carrying my child.
“What tone?”
“You’re upset.”
“I think you already have an idea why I’m upset.” she murmurs, going back inside with the door open.
It was in fact, getting cold. And her voice is cold. Colder than the weather.
The house looked practically the same, except that maybe the living room was changed since most of my belongings were there once. Natasha took Aliana from my arms and carried her upstairs, leaving me completely alone in the middle of the house with nothing but my phone. I decided to text Peter, smiling when I remember him kissing me in his car.
Me: this would take a while, are you sure you’re okay waiting outside?
Peter: yes, of course. Though my curfew is in 30 minutes, let me know if you stay longer.
Me: Okay, I understand. Thanks again, Pete.
Peter: :)
“Is that your boyfriend?”
I see Natasha standing in front of me with her arms still crossed, her eyes staring at me. I began to notice that she changed the color of her hair and cut it shorter, which I mostly prefer the most since I once told her I find her hair irresistible. However, that has changed. But I still find her irresistible, I will always look at her that way.
I shrugged my shoulder, nodding solemnly.
“Yeah, we’ve been together for a month now.”
“You look good,” she smiles at me, wrapping the cardigan around her with a sad look on her face. I could feel my heart shrinking from the sight of her being so… hurt. “You went out tonight?”
“Date with Peter, heh.”
“Must be fun then, huh?” she smiles tiredly and looks down at her feet while clenching her arms around herself, knowing at any time she will break. The silence had become thick and my feet were starting to hurt, so I asked with an urging tone: “Where are the divorce papers? Have you signed them?”
“I haven’t exactly done that.”
I sighed, shaking my head in disappointment. Although I’d expected this from her; of course, she wouldn’t sign the damn papers. She was too possessive to let me go.
“Nat, you have to sign them.”
“And give you up like that?” she looks up with a scoff, stepping closer to me. “Y/n, I’m not going to sign those papers without a fight.”
“You completely threw away the fight the minute you stopped showing me and your daughter some attention that we both needed.”
My heart sank when I saw her shoulder slumping, knowing that I was already giving up on our marriage that was no longer there for nearly two years. I studied her posture intensely; she was guilty. She was upset with what was going on and how it was going to end, she didn’t want to let go of our marriage. Of course, she wouldn’t. Natasha Romanoff doesn’t give up that easily.
But she did.
“There must be another way to fix this,” she whispered with a pleading voice, grabbing my hand as she held them like a blanket. I sheered my eyes away from her but completely caught up when she asked, “Look at me for once, Y/n, please… please look at me.”
“I can’t.”
“I love you–”
Before she was done, I said with a broken sob, “Please don’t do this again, Nat. You know what happened and you know why I’m doing this. Marriage does not work for us, it never should’ve occurred in our life. Aliana was our great gift, and we should keep our baby happy. But it's not our marriage, so please just let it go.”
She shakes her head viciously, pleading with her hands.
I couldn’t pull away.
“Remember when I have sworn to you that we’ll marry again?” she asked, gulping out of nervousness. “R-Remember when I told you I’ll do better? Remember? God, we were so happy! Why can’t you just believe in me again? You know, we are meant to be together, and everyone knows that.”
“You only depend on their opinions,” I said. “But you never have an idea how I feel most of the time. It’s always you, always your job, and always about your problems but never mine! What happened to hearing each other out? You never gave me that anymore once we got married, what happened?”
She looked so tired, yet effortlessly beautiful when she cried. Natasha pushes her hair away from her eyebrows and keeps herself close to me, making sure that I wasn’t going away at any moment. I knew deep down that I had my faults too; of course, I did. I knew neither of us would be cheating, but we couldn’t depend on time on each other. She was either busy or at home but I was gone for work. We never sat at one table again and ate as a family, as a whole. It was always me and Aliana or her and Aliana.
“Take me back,” she begged me with her hands going through the back of my waist. “Please, I love you so much. I’ll give up everything to be with my best girl, which is you. Aliana is our daughter, yes, but I can’t give you up. I could never give up the first girl I fell in love with.”
“Nat–”
She kisses my forehead and pulls me into a tight hug, whispering in an incoherent voice: “Please don’t leave me. Don’t leave me, baby… I can’t lose you. Please don’t go, I’m so in love with you–you have no idea how I’m incredibly in love with you.”
The truth is, I know that I’m in love with her. I’m just in denial. It’s easy to just come back and expect the good, but you never know what’s going to happen with the decision you’re about to make in life. I knew Natasha was loyal, she’s like a golden retriever. Loyal dogs, like her. But her time commitment to work and family can be difficult, really fucking difficult. Especially when I no longer feel the love that she used to give me before marriage. I pulled away completely and turned around, marching my way back to the front door when all of the sudden I felt two pairs of arms wrapped around my body, pulling me away from the door.
“Please stay,” she whispers to my ear, kissing my cheek with a tender that I wish my heart would not flutter with love. “Please have one night with me. Just one night of me trying to prove to you how much I’ve gotten better, you have to stay…”
I held onto her arms, sobbing with her whether I decide to leave now and fall out of love with her or stay for one night and make her prove how much she wouldn’t do that again. I knew from my guts that I wanted to stay and tell Peter to drive off, but I couldn’t leave the poor guy alone. He was so kind, I couldn’t break his heart either.
“What about Peter?”
“Tell him to drive off,” she said. “Just stay with me for one night. If you decide to leave me, then I’ll sign the papers. I promise.”
She let me go and I walked out of the door, telling Peter that he should go home. He gave me a sad smile and told me that I had a good night with my wife, driving off with my heart falling into pieces. I hate breaking people’s hearts, that’s mostly the reason why I never intend to get into any relationships.
I walked back in and saw Natasha waiting in the living room with a calm look on her face. I sat down on her lap and played with the back of her hair, staring down at her plump dried lips that are begging to be kissed. She brings her thumb to my cheek and rubs it softly as we close the gap between our lips. She kisses me gently with her hand tugging at my shirt, pulling me very close until both of our breasts are pressed against each other. I kissed her back with passion, nipping at her upper lip with hunger and pure love.
Pulling away, she whispers: “I’ll make it right this time, okay? I just need your faith in me.”
“I do have faith in you,” I whisper with a small smile on my face. “But please, give me and your daughter the time we both deserve. If not, then I’m not in this relationship–”
“I’ll make sure you’ll never leave me again, I promise.”
We both got rid of our tops and kissed each other hungrily, appreciating the fire crackling through the background. I like how she can be so romantic that she would turn on her fireplace and make love to me on this carpet and on the couch, something about that makes our romance thrilling.
“So beautiful,” she smiles while kneading my left breast with her calloused hand. “I’m never letting you go, do you understand me?”
“I understand.”
“Good,” she sighs into my mouth, pushing me down on the carpet while parting my legs, inching her hand close to my crotch. “I’ll make love to you until it’s our last breath, baby girl…”
After multiple orgasms and numerous marks on my shoulder and my breasts, we hugged each other while watching the fire behold in our eyes. I felt her nipples perking behind my back, letting out a quiet giggle when she started nipping the skin of my neck. She sighed at my face and whispered, “I love this moment.”
“How come? We have made love plenty of times.”
“This is special though,” she said with her messy short blonde hair that makes her look so tired and adorable; making me giggle even more. “It’s my hair, isn’t it? You’re my cute little teddy bear, huh?”
“But you’re my teddy bear,” I pouted. “Aren’t you my big strong teddy bear?”
“That I am, baby,” she whispers with her cheekbones popping up. “That I am.”
I never thought I could be this happy again, I was glad enough to stay with her and work this through once more. I felt her kiss lingering on my shoulder and I knew we were going to make love again.
That never became a problem anymore.

Tumblr media
"Alright, time to get up," He breaks the silence between you from behind you, where he was laying with his arms wrapped around you, one underneath you around your torso and the other one higher on your chest, locking you in place next to him.
You groan and shuffle back into him a little, "Five more minutes."
"Five more minutes normally turns into me being an hour late for my shift, darling," He points out, kissing the exposed skin of your shoulder a few times in a line.
You hum at the contact, dreading the inevitable feeling of him pulling away from you, "Who needs to work, anyway?"
Since he'd stopped accepting his father's money, Rafe was determined to make things work for himself - which meant full time jobs and budgeting, two things Rafe was not ever used to.
He shuffles back from the bed and climbs out, standing stark naked in the room that was littered with your clothes from the night before.
You whine and turn onto your back, sprawling yourself out in the white sheets, the bed feeling empty without him there. You watch as Rafe rummages through his drawers for a pair of boxers and socks, grabbing his top from the back of the chair.
"You know... you could just stay," You point out, trailing your finger over the edge of the white sheets covering you, tracing how they dip over the curves of your naked body.
He turns around to face you, halfway through pulling the top over his arms, a smile curling onto his face at the sight of you - a sight he would never get bored of. Rafe was so sure he could spend every day in that bed with you, just the two of you, and he would never tire of it.
"Don't tempt me," He shakes his head, running the tip of his tongue over his lips.
You move your hands to trail a fingertip over the sharp lines of your collarbone, "Unless..." Your hand dips to your chest, underneath the thin sheets, "I find a way to keep myself occupied."
"(Y/N)..." His voice trails off, as if he doesn't want to disturb the angelic sight in front of him.
You drag your hand down lower, the delicate touch of your fingers leaving goosebumps in the absence of contact. Eventually, they reach below your belly button and you watch Rafe swallow the lump in his throat as he fixates on the movement under the covers. When your cool fingers reach your heat, you can't help the hum of relief that escapes your lips - though perhaps a little louder to make certain that Rafe heard you. You let your middle finger toy slow circles around your clit, your ring and index finger dipping down to brush over your folds.
"(Y/N)... don't do this," There's a warning tone to Rafe's voice, a slightly darker look casting over his face as he watches every single movement you make - part of him wishing he could rip the covers off and watch every second of it with a front row seat.
You let your eyelids flutter shut and push one finger just past your hole, whimpering slightly at the contact you'd been craving.
"Look at me."
His tone his harsh now, not a request but an order. You open your eyes and make sure you're looking directly into his, sure that you can see a growing tightness in the front of his boxers. Rafe's jaw clenches tightly, a thick look of desire clouding over his eyes at the sight he was sure he would have dreamt about.
You don't stop playing with your slick folds, a slow and lazy pace but one that still has you stifling moans. Rafe loved it when you were vocal, but he loved it even more when he was the one drawing every single sound from you. Your breath catches in your throat as you apply more pressure to your clit, picking up your pace just a little.
"Pull the covers down," Rafe states, a heat in his voice beyond the cold request.
You smirk, knowing how far you can push the boy to his limits, "Do it yourself."
He shakes his head and tugs the t-shirt off from his arms, throwing it aimlessly to the floor. There is not a single person in the world that could make him melt like you did, make him so transfixed that he forgot about everything else in the world.
He kneels on the bed below the spread of your legs and reaches his thick, long fingers up to pull down the cotton cover, letting it dip to reveal your breasts. Rafe ducks down and kisses each one of them, soft, letting his breath dance over your hardening nipples. He feels your hand stop moving beneath him, reaching to grip at his biceps instead.
"Did I tell you to stop?" He glances up at you, eyes glazed with a dark lust.
You fight back a moan and move your hand back down to your pussy, rubbing slowly at your clit once again and still holding Rafe's bicep with your free hand.
He keeps moving further down your torso, his knees nudging your legs further apart.
"You stop when I tell you to stop, angel."
Eventually, the covers fall to your waist and he pulls it quickly over the rest of your legs, leaving you completely exposed underneath his gaze. It sent goosebumps all over your skin, the cold of the air giving nothing to the tingling heat he had his control over.
His head is mere inches from your heat, his eyes following every single move of your hand, transfixed on the way your middle finger dips into you slowly, curling at the angle he knew drove you crazy.
"Good girl," The words come from deep within him, his breath fanning over your skin as he presses soft and lingering kisses to your thighs. The closer he gets to your pussy, the harsher his kisses become, sucking and biting at the skin on your upper thigh until he knows it will leave a permanent mark - a reminder to himself for days to come that you belonged to him and only him.
"Rafe, baby," You whimper, "I need you."
"I know baby," He assures you, large fingers sprawling over your thighs and gripping them in his hold.
With that, he tugs your legs towards him just a little until his face is practically buried between them, nose nudging your hand away from yourself so his mouth can take its place. With both of your hands now free, he uses both of his hands to guide them up above your head;
"Keep them there for me, darling."
You grip onto the back of the headboard, needing to ground yourself into the feeling as his tongue flicks over your wetness, like he's lapping at the juices. He lets it dance over your clit in the way he knew drove your crazy, the right amount of pressure that left you craving more. He was practically ravenous with it, dipping his tongue lower into your pussy and toying at the entrance, feeling every part of the desire you had only for him.
"Rafe, don't stop," You whimper, turning into a moan as he draws up the rough pad of his thumb to your clit, rubbing it in fast circles as if he knew every part of what your body was craving, "Fuck, don't stop."
It's like a growl that releases from him, vibrating over your pussy as his finger doesn't give up in its relentless torture.
"I need you to hold on for me, okay baby?" He encourages in the second that he lets himself be pulled away from your vulva, "Want to watch you come undone on my cock."
You see the way his hips drive themselves a little into the mattress, craving the indescribable feeling of your pussy stretched tight around him.
"Now, Rafe," You manage to mumble out, breathless and heart beating rapidly, "I need you, now."
Who would he be to say no to you? To that heavenly tone and the way your eyes practically plead with him.
He draws himself away from your pussy and brings his thumb, now dampened by your juices to the 'o' shape of your lips. You take it in and suck it clean, letting him drag it over your bottom lip as he watches you with the concoction of love and lust only you could give him.
"My angel," He grins, hooking a leg underneath yours and flipping you over in one swift motion so that you can straddle his hips, "Be a good girl and ride my dick for me."
You line your pussy up over his thick, waiting cock and take it in one hand, letting the tip graze over your hole before pushing yourself down onto it. It forces a whimper from your lips instantly, pressing your hands onto his muscular chest to brace yourself. Rafe grunts at the long awaited feeling, letting you adjust to his size before guiding his hands to your waist to move on top of him. You drag your hips slowly up and down, knowing by now it wouldn't take long for either of you to reach your high and wanting to savour the feeling for as long as possible.
Rafe sits up and sprawls his hands over your back, pulling you into him tightly, "Fuck, you were made for me, angel."
You moan and throw your head back as you draw your body up and down, up and down. He takes the opportunity, sucking on the exposed skin of your neck and leaving a mark to match the one he'd already painted on your thigh.
"Do you want to cum for me, darling?"
The words drive you crazy, whimpering in agreement when your words fail you.
"I need your words, angel."
"Yes, fuck, yes, Rafe."
He smirks against your neck and lifts his hips up from the bed to pick you both up and turn you over, laying your back lay flush against the sheets once again. His hands grip your waist and your nails dig marks into his biceps as he picks up the unrelenting pace. His cock feels like it pushes into you further with every thrust, catching the spot that made your eyes roll to the back of your skull.
"Okay, cum for me, baby," He whispers into your ear, sending a shiver down your spine as your high draws closer.
You slip one arm down from his arm and twist at the discarded sheets, arching your back away from the mattress and drawing you closer to him as your head drops back against the pillows. You release the built up scream from deep inside you as your climax tumbles through you, toes curling from the release.
The sight is angelic to him, Rafe watching you come undone around him, from him. He grips your hand from the sheets and holds it high above your head, thrusting into you through your high, drawing it out like he never wants it to end. His groan rumbles in the hot air between you as his high follows soon after yours, releasing his thick load and painting your walls.
"Fuck," He groans his pace slowing down, still pushing his cum into you as his gaze drops to watch the way he draws in and out of you.
You bring your hand up and brush your fingers through his short hairs, drawing his gaze back up to his eyes, "So you might be late to work..." You giggle, your throat scratchy.
Rafe grins and drops his forehead to your shoulder, "You'll be the death of me, (Y/N) (Y/L/N)."
You hum against him and rub a hand at the back of his neck, another thing that you knew drove him insane.
"Likewise, Rafe Cameron."

For familial f/o day, organized by my love @cherry-bomb-ships I didn't have much prepared other than queueing a few posts, so I decided to share a couple wips from the lyric video I'm working on instead! ^ 0 ^ 💖💖
The first one is of Kep doing some training on the ship as Brea supervises, I imagine while they're in hyperspace he trains with the little ball thing a lot since he has a lot of work to do in order to hone his Force connection! And the second ofc is the two of them catching a little snooze, probably on an away mission.
It's definitely a lot easier for Kepler to fall asleep when Brea's around because he feels a lot safer 🥺💖

Seriously one of the most confounding things in the world is pop-Christian moralizing.
"Is ASMR ok for Christians?? 🤨🤔😧" I'm not sure in what world it would be sinful to listen to soothing brushing, ocean sounds, and tapping, yet someone felt the need to ask the question, and someone else felt the need to make a YouTube video answering it. (I didn't watch it, so I don't know the verdict, but somehow you're trusting the verdict to a rando on YouTube and not Discernment from God?)
"Christian facials" because having a hot towel on your face and putting on serum is in any way aligned with a religion or lack thereof, and therefore needs to/even Can be made Christian?
"Christian-friendly sex positions" and the only difference is it's stick figures instead of realistic drawings, and instead of male/female or penetrator/receiver, it's husband/wife. Because you know those goofy health-book illustrations were distracting you from the righteous goal at hand: eating your girl out. But you can't call her your girl, you have to make it clear to everyone seeing you have sex (which... is just the 2 of you, right?) that you're having Good and Not Sinful sex, because you, a Husband, are Married to your Wife. Side note: the stick figures actively make it harder to figure out the intricacies of any of the positions and therefore are objectively shittier at doing what they're made to do.
Christian soap, christian mints, christian calendars, christian music, christian curtains, christian fiction, christian restaurants, christian news, christian shops. There are things in the world that are OK being secular. The fact that your soap does not have an icthus sign etched in that washes away in 3 days anyway does not make you a bad person, or even a bad christian. Your home does not need something Christian™️ in every room for people (or yourself!) not to forget you're christian... I assume?
The king who must say he is king, etcetera. This kind of mindset is so boggling to me, and reeks of nominative faith and deeeeep insecurity. Retail therapy but instead of buying temporary happiness you're buying temporary grace. Being so beholden to the dogma of organized religion that you go to any person feigning authority on the subject rather than using your own brain to make a decision. The idea that things can only be okay to interact with if they're explicitly christian, as though interacting with it as a christian doesn't inherently put it through a christian lens; as though you can only get things trickled down to you from church authority figures with robust enough constitutions to judge what's ok for you because you don't have the ability to think critically; as though you should stay away from what's "sinful" rather than, LIKE JESUS, be able to go into it and be a good example; as though instead of learning to be capable of handling it, you should be as weak to sin as possible; as though you have to go through the world with kid gloves because touching something dirty would soil your soul (which, of course this implies, is sparkling - impossible, arrogant, and kind of denying God, lol [actually, not lol, I'm expanding on that. Denying God by refusing to admit your own sin. Denying God by refusing his grace because you won't admit your own sin. Denying God by acting like his power couldn't absolve something as simple as being exposed to sin, let alone if you did end up making a miatake. Denying God by keeping yourself in Good Christian spaces and not being there for people who need outside help. There's more but I digress]).
Also, the childish áffect of refusing to say things as they are because that would be bad, but referring to it in euphamism is fine - or, transversely, that using colloquialisms is bad, but medical speak is fine, depending on what breed of crackpot christian you're dealing with. "Hanky-panky" just say sex. "Adult drinks" just say wine, beer, liquor. "Flower" for the love of all that is holy just say vulva/vagina/virginity. "Breasts" is fine to describe your chest but "boobs" is not. You can say "buttocks" but not "butt". Discussing bathroom activities is decisively not cool but if utterly necessary you must say "urine" and "feces" because pee and poop are too pedestrian.
Like, entire side tangent, but the weirdly widespread christian-ism of not discussing things frankly or discussing them super detachedly, but both preferring to never discuss them at all, regarding anything "potentially sinful" or "not spiritually uplifting" (usually boiling down to "anything physical") is so whack to me. Do not discuss your period, even in female spaces, because it's tmi. Don't talk about your health issues if they're not Clean enough subjects, even as something to pray about (like breast/prostate cancer, shitting diseases). Don't ever talk about your sex life except to wiggle your eyebrows at your kids when they're old enough. Don't hug your male friends, daughter. Don't play with your little cousins, son. Sex is so so bad but everything is about it, actually. Sex is so so great which is why you should feel guilty about ever wanting it. All nudity is sexual. Dress so they know you're a woman but also that you're a lady. Fart jokes are not allowed. You must remember that all men are looking at you with lust at all times but you can't hold that against them. All things that get you sweaty or muddy are bad. Hair on women is unnatural but just dandy for men, except we can't talk about pubic hair so you're just going to have to figure out on your own if it's less sinful to not think about your vag enough to do anything to it or to ensure you're free of all sinful hair. Here's how to do makeup in a god-honoring way, because you couldn't know on your own, and you must both jump through this hoop to be acceptable to your men but not have enough fun and personal expression with it for it to become anything other than a chore. It is wrong to kill, which is why we support the troops. We are supposed to help the poor, which is why I drive past the beggars that are dirty and ragged and smelly. We are supposed to celebrate God with our bodies, which is why my most spiritually moved state equates to slightly raising my arms.
I can't close this post without including my oft-quoted favorite example of this weird-ass pop-Christian phenomenon translating to real-life people in real-time thoughts: my mom saying she had to take into account "which ice cream flavor is most glorifying to God" at a froyo shop. Either it's raspberry, or she chose sin that day.

Second Years (Haikyuu!!)
This fic was commissioned by @bumblebeedrizzzle. Thank you!
Primary Universe: Second Year
Summary: Hinata and Kageyama contemplate their upcoming season with a changed team, and Kageyama decides his friend needs some cheering up.
**THIS FIC IS SPOILER FREE!**
A/N: I'm actually really glad to have gotten this request (even though technically Haikyuu isn't on my commissions list - I made an exception) because when I look at the last several fics I've posted for this fandom, they were all predominantly lee!Kageyama. I love lee!Kags, obviously, but it was time Hinata got some love, too! So thank you for the commission!
Also, if I continue writing for Haikyuu, I feel like I've done pretty much all I can with the anime storyline, so I'll likely write about our boys as second years going forward for the most part. I will always let you know if there are spoilers ahead! <3
Anyway - on to the main event! I hope you enjoy! ^^
Word Count: 1,833
~~~
“I can’t believe Noya is a third-year now,” Hinata mused as he walked his bike up the hill the team used for workouts, Kageyama walking at his side with his hands in the pockets of his hoodie.
His friend snorted. “Forget Noya, I can’t believe Tanaka is a third-year. Neither of them really act like it.”
“Kinnoshita will keep them in line.”
“He’ll try to.”
“Who do you think will be captain next year? Tsukishima?”
Kageyama shuddered and growled, “I hope not.”
Hinata laughed, though it came out halfhearted. Silence fell between them for a couple of minutes as they focused on climbing the last crest of the hill to where it leveled out before rounding up into the second half. Once there, the redhead slowed his bike to a stop and glanced out at the city view. It was getting dark out, but there was still enough light in the sky for them to make it home before sundown.
Kageyama took a few more steps before realizing his friend had stopped. He turned, saw the look on Hinata’s face, and frowned. “What’s the matter?”
To his surprise, Hinata didn’t try to shrug off his question with a claim to be fine or a forced smile. Instead, he considered a moment before asking, “Does it feel off to you?”
“Does what feel off?” Kageyama asked, striding back over to where he stood.
“After everything that happened last year, doesn’t it feel kind of…wrong to not have Daichi and the others with us?”
“It’s different, sure, but it’s just the natural way of things.” Kageyama glanced out at the cityscape as well. “They had to graduate and move on. This year Noya and Tanaka will graduate, and then we will next year. We’ll all move on and become adults. It’s what happens.”
Hinata scoffed. “Okay, Mom.” He glanced up at his friend with an even deeper frown. “Don’t you miss them at all?”
Kageyama suddenly realized what Hinata was getting at. He didn’t want reassurance or lectures about how “life goes on.” Not from him. He was hurting, and he wanted someone to understand that. So, with a sigh, the taller boy relented.
“Yeah, I do. Especially Suga.”
“Doesn’t it seem weird that we’re just…doing another season without them?”
“I guess so.” Kageyama considered for a moment, then nodded. “Yeah, it does. I got so used to Daichi’s leadership and Suga’s guidance that it feels weird not having them around to help anymore. And since none of the third-years are setters, I’m the senior on that position and these new guys are looking to me for guidance, and…”
He trailed off, and Hinata nodded. “Yeah. You’re kind of in charge of that position and you’re not ready for it.”
Kageyama couldn’t even argue with that. “Exactly. I wish I’d had another year with Suga.”
“I wish all of us could do last season over now that we’ve learned so much. I really feel like…”
This time Hinata trailed off, and when the silence descended, neither of them tried to break it for a while. It felt right, somehow, having this moment to really let it sink in that their friends were off doing other things now.
After a few minutes, Kageyama let out a breath. “But Kinnoshita is doing well as captain so far, and these first-years have promise. Really the only thing I can’t stand is that Tsukishima decided to stick around.”
Hinata snorted out a laugh. “You guys really don’t get along.”
“Understatement.” Kageyama smirked, then glanced at Hinata again. He looked like he was feeling a tad better, but not by much. He nudged him. “You know we’re gonna be fine, right?”
“Of course I do,” Hinata replied, though his voice lacked conviction.
“Yeah, I definitely believe that you believe that, boke.”
“I do!”
“You’re going to have to convince me a little harder than that.” With a smirk, Kageyama suddenly grabbed him around the waist and pulled him against his chest, making him drop his bike and yelp as fingers suddenly dug into his sides.
“Eeeek! Kahahahahageyama, wait, nohohohohohoho!” Hinata cried, giggles spilling out of him as he squirmed uselessly in his taller friend’s grip.
“You can’t fool me. I know when you’re just toughing it out.” The setter chuckled and hugged him tighter, aiming for his ribs. “Come on, lighten up, boke.”
“I’m light! I’m lihihihihihihihight! Kageyahahahahama!” Hinata’s laughter rose in pitch once his friend got to his weakest spot. Thankfully he wasn’t going too hard yet, but it was still enough to make him cackle and try to pry his arms away. “You jeheheheheheherk! I’m fihihihihihihihine!”
“Liar.”
“EEEEK!!” Hinata screeched when his friend found that spot along his last few ribs that had him absolutely howling with laughter, frantically trying to escape his grip to no avail. “KAGEYAMA NOHOHOHOHOHOHO!!”
Kageyama chuckled, deciding he wanted to make it a bit worse by hefting the little spiker up into the air so he really had nowhere to go and nothing to ground on. Hinata squealed and laughed and kicked the air uselessly.
“You seem to forget that those three aren’t the only teammates you had,” Kageyama grumbled good-naturedly into his ear as he tickled, reaching down to squeeze a hip, earning him another shriek. “Noya and Tanaka are still around, and so are all the others from last year. And we have these new guys – and you have me. So don’t feel so sad, boke. We’re gonna be just fine.”
“STAHAHAHAHAHAP, STOP, PLEHEHEHEHEASE!!” Hinata cried, tapping his friend’s arm, writhing in his tickly hug of doom. “PLEASE, VOHOHOHOLLEYBALL!”
Kageyama stopped immediately, gently letting his friend back down to the ground and holding onto him to make sure he didn’t fall. He frowned, worried he’d been a little too pushy. “Sorry, are…are you okay? I thought it could help…”
“You tickle too hard,” Hinata replied, glancing up at him with a tiny leftover smile. “And that’s my worst spot, so it just got to be a bit…much. Especially if you’re trying to cheer me up.”
Kageyama blinked. “Are you seriously trying to tell me how to tickle you to make you feel better?”
Hinata grinned. “I mean, as long as you’re trying to, you might as well do it right.”
“Oh, you little…” The setter pulled him back in again, slipping under his hoodie to scribble against his belly directly. “There, is that better?”
“Ehehehehehehehe! Yeheheheheheheah, thehehehere you go!” Hinata squealed, gripping his friend’s arms all over again despite his praising words.
Suddenly inspired, Kageyama grabbed his wrists and pulled them above his head with ease, using his free hand to keep tickling his tummy, and finally he got the noise he was looking for – the particular shriek Hinata let out when he was surprised but in a good way. When he was having fun.
“Boke,” he muttered with a smile, keeping it up. “Let’s try this again. Are you still feeling sad about Daichi and the others?”
Hinata squirmed in his hold but giggled freely, daring to glance up at him and sputter, “Of cohohohohohourse I ahahahahaham!”
“Hmm, not enough, then? All right. I can do this all day.”
For a couple of minutes, they stayed that way at the top of the hill – Hinata caught in Kageyama’s grasp and giggling hysterically at the soft, light tickles his friend was purposely trying to inflict, the setter smirking and holding him tight, determined to bring him back into a good headspace before letting him go.
“We’re going to be fine, Hinata,” he said after a short while, keeping his tone soft and genuine – a rare occurrence for the taller boy. “You’ve still got Kinnoshita and Noya and Tanaka and Yamaguchi and…and Tsukishima.”
“And yohohohohohou, rihihihihihight?”
Kageyama smiled despite himself. “Obviously. You’re not getting rid of me that easily. I still have to take you down out there, you know.” He paused, then slowed his tickling to a gradual stop and murmured, “I’m here for you, boke. If you need me. Just like you’re always there for me.”
Hinata caught his breath as he let out a few more snickers, turning to look up at his friend as Kageyama released his grip on his arms. “You know, you’re not too bad at this cheering up thing when you put your mind to it, Bakageyama.”
The setter couldn’t help but smile. The use of the insult/nickname was a clear indicator the redhead was feeling like himself again, and Kageyama was more than happy to count that as a win.
“Shut up. Just trying to make you see reason. We’re going to be fine. We’re going to have another great season and take everyone down.”
Hinata beamed. “And this year we don’t have to face stupid Oikawa!”
His friend was right – and it was a detail Kageyama hadn’t considered until just now. He couldn’t help but grin. “You’re right. We don’t.”
“Ooh, that made you all kinds of happy! Glad to see you cheering up, too.”
“‘Too’? I’m not the one who was being all pouty about the others graduating last year.”
“I wasn’t pouting!”
“You absolutely were.”
Hinata huffed. “You were just going on about how you missed Suga—”
“You brought it up, genius!”
“Oh, now who needs cheering up?” Hinata’s grin morphed into something more sinister, and he brought his fingers up to wiggle teasingly at Kageyama.
The setter hated how fast he blushed at the sight of them.
“Someone’s excited~”
“Shut up – I don’t need cheering up, boke! I’ve been better off than you this whole time!”
Hinata laughed. “Don’t tell me you’re trying to talk me out of tickling you back? You’re always in the mood for tickles, Kage~”
“I am not…!” Deciding it was a lost cause, Kageyama took a step back, and when Hinata made to lunge for him, he dodged out of the way and began sprinting up the second half of the hill, hoping for enough of a head-start to at least tire him out a little.
But he’d forgotten one important detail.
Not only did Hinata have speed on his side…
Today, he had a bike.
Just when Kageyama had gotten to the top of the hill entirely, Hinata chimed his bike’s warning bell. The setter whirled around in time to see the redhead abandon his ride and sprint toward him, and there was absolutely no getting away from him at that point.
“Wait, wait, wait – wahahahahahahait!” Kageyama shrieked, his laugh coming out both panicked and genuine as his best friend latched onto him and dug into his tummy right off the bat, making him squeal and crumple to the ground in a heap, cackling and squirming. “Hinatahahahahahaha!”
“Well, would you look at that? Grumpy Kageyama does want some cheer-up tickles after all!”
“I dohohohohohon’t nehehehehehehed them!” Kageyama cried, shrieking again when the redhead pushed him to the ground entirely and hopped onto his waist to keep him pinned.
“Maybe not,” Hinata conceded with a playful grin, “but I think you want them, Bakageyama.”
"so you can go fuck around with your friends but you can't even bother to text me and let me know if you're okay?"
you were standing across from your boyfriend of three years in his large house, arms crossed over your chest. antoine had been avoiding and ignoring you for some weeks now, prioritizing other things over your relationship. you had asked if he could stay and keep you company since you had a bad headache and stomachache and didn't want to be home alone in the house.
whenever antoine wasn't feeling well, you would always stay with him. you would cook him food, keep him comfortable, and make sure he was well rested. you needed to rest, but you were worried about antoine since he had not told you when he was coming home from practice and was four hours late which affected your fatigue.
instead of resting and keeping well, you had spent the last few hours sitting on the large and empty couch across from the front door waiting for your boyfriend with a shaking leg and twiddling thumbs.
"oh i'm sorry! i didn't know i had to inform you of my every move!" antoine rolled his eyes at you and slid off his shoes and tossed his practice bag onto the floor.
"pick up your shit, i'm not gonna do it for you." you were getting annoyed now. antoine knew that you weren't well and was still acting like a child - throwing his bags and rolling his eyes. "it's fine i'll do it later." "no you won't!" you shouted loudly, your voice echoing in antoine's large property. "you never do shit! you're all talk!"
"should i remind you that i am the one paying the bills? it's my house, i can do whatever the fuck i please to in it!"
you ignored antoine's rude comment when your curiosity got the best of you. "what were you doing out so late anyway? why couldn't you pick up your phone and tell me that you were going to be late?" your voice was accusing, and you were unfortunately implying something that you wished you wouldn't have to.
"i was out with my boys. you know that i never get to see them anymore, training isn't enough!" "where were you and your boys?" your eyes were squinted and your hands were rested upon your hips.
"we were at the clu- why am i telling you this? i don't need to prove anything to you!" antoine shouted sharply. "yes you do because i am your fucking girlfriend!" antoine gulped at your words. your voice might as well have been gone from how long and loudly you had been screaming for. your head was pounding harder than before and your ears were ringing.
"three years! three years we have been together and we have never had a problem like this. why so sudden? did i do something? did i say something? is anything bothering you?!" you were really desperate to know why he was suddenly so cold towards you.
"i was out with sylvie."
you weren't expecting that. you weren't expecting that at all. antoine wasn't the type of man to lie to your face like that. especially about staying out late with his ex girlfriend. you were so focused on the fact that he lied to you that it didn't click that he was out with his ex.
"why..?"
"she just um.. she wanted to see me, and i wanted to see her too."
"why?"
"we haven't seen each other for a while. you know that we were very close friends before we had a relationship. she had texted me saying that she missed me and wanted to hang out- no strings."
"why?"
"baby please say something else."
you didn't know what to feel. you couldn't even look at him, your shame and anger making your face turn hot. your eyes were focused on the floor, mind and heart running a marathon, but your body frozen still.
"antoine."
once you regained your composure, you were ready to confront him. you weren't going to let him see you break.
"what did you two do..? and don't- don't fucking lie to me because that seems to be a new habit of yours."
your head finally raised and your eyes locked with his. your finger was pointing at him accusingly. his eyes were looking down and his pink lips were held in a pout.
"y/n please don't get mad-"
"what the fuck did you two do?"
'i kissed her."
it was like the air got knocked out of your lungs. your eyebrows shot up and mouth opened to speak, but nothing but short breaths and gasps arose as your hands fell to your sides. your vision became blurry despite your original plan to not cry, but how could you not? your boyfriend of three years went running back to his ex because he "missed her" and then proceeded to cheat on you.
"okay." your cheeks were now wet with tears, but you wouldn't have noticed if they didn't fall onto your lips since your face felt numb.
"what.. what- what do you mean 'okay'? what- where are you going? y/n! look at me when i'm talking to you, dammit!" you had turned on your heel and stormed to the bedroom, not even giving a second thought as to what you were about to do. you threw open the closet and grabbed a bag, packing clothes and makeup disorderly. you were being so aggressive that antoine was scared to even go near you.
"y/n stop being irrational i can explain!"
you had enough clothes packed to last you a while before grabbing your wallet, charger, toothbrush, and makeup bag as you sniffled, hardly seeing what you were grabbing since your eyes were filled with tears. you felt so incredibly stupid. you actually believed that antoine was out with his friends for hours. you actually believed that he loved you and wouldn't lie and cheat on you after three years of your relationship.
"y/n can you just- fuck!"
antoine cursed loudly before grabbing harshly onto your arms as he pulled you away from your bag that you were throwing thigs in haphazardly.
"don't fucking- antoine let go!"
"let me explain. please. please listen it was all a mistake. i only love you i promise."
"antoine don't-"
"please understand y/n. you're all i have. i love you so much. i've always loved you. i didn't mean to kiss her. you're the only one for me. that was all a mistake - with her. it was just the heat of the moment! i would never hurt you like that - you know it! i mean it with all my heart, cherie. i only love you."
lies and deception spewed from his lips which he connected with yours, working his untruths into your mouth like water, which you drank compliantly.
he only loves me.
You can’t sleep. Despite how comfortable you are, despite the tiredness coursing through your bones, your mind can’t seem to slow down. It’s like if you happened to fall asleep, everything would just be a dream and you’d wake up at home and alone and overthinking every interaction you’ve ever had with Poe.
At some point, your body must finally take over because when your eyes flutter open, soft sunlight is bleeding into the room through the curtains. Knowing that you’ll slowly go insane if you lay in bed any longer, despite the urge to just stay and watch Poe as he sleeps like an angel, you extract yourself from his arms as carefully as possible and sneak downstairs.
Once you’re safely downstairs and feel as though your every movement won’t wake everyone up, you relax a little. Turning on the coffee pot, you think through what you want to make everyone for breakfast. When you’d first arrived, you promised Kes that if you managed to wake up earlier enough, you’d surprise him with breakfast to say thank you for all his hospitality.
Settling on pancakes, you turn to search for the ingredients as the coffee pot hums and Lucky comes out of his crate, tail wagging happily when he sees you. Crouching on the floor, you give Lucky some scratches, laughing quietly to yourself when he flips over in search of belly rubs.
When you manage to finally pull away from Lucky to start on breakfast, he follows underfoot, twining between your legs and very politely begging for scraps. The sun is streaming in, bathing the whole room in a warm golden glow, making everything look almost heavenly with radiance. Even just looking at the sunshine feels warm, as if just touching the dappled rays could warm you from the inside out.
Until now, you hadn’t realized how desperately you missed the sun and the warmth that comes with it. You missed the warm breezes that rustles the trees and Poe’s curls, you missed the brightly colored flowers and the delicious exhaustion that comes from being outside in the sun all day. You’d noticed how Poe seemed to come alive in the sunshine, but now you believe it reinvigorated you too, making you feel lighter and happier and more at peace than you’ve ever been.
Or maybe that was just from spending time with Poe.
Whatever the reason, you feel completely at peace in the sunlit kitchen, sipping from your coffee mug as the pancakes sizzle and hiss in the pan. Right as you finish the first batch, you can hear the floorboards creaking behind you, so you shout out a cheery “good morning!” without turning around.
“I thought I told you guests don’t work in my house,” Kes says in lieu of a greeting, but when you turn to stutter out an apology you realize he’s smiling at you, “it smells great, thanks for getting up early.”
“Oh, it was no problem, I couldn’t sleep anyway.” You turn back to the stove, flipping the pancakes to keep them from burning.
“Were you uncomfortable at all?” Kes asks, sounding worried that he’s been a bad host.
“No, no! Not at all, it was just one of those nights.” You reassure him, stacking some pancakes on a plate before sliding it to him. Kes hums knowingly before taking the offered plate and sitting down.
After finishing with your own breakfast, you take your mug and your plate and join Kes at the table where he praises your cooking at least a hundred times. There’s just something about Kes that makes him so easy to talk to, and by the time Poe comes down twenty minutes later with an adorable bed head, you and Kes are chatting as if you’ve known each other your whole lives.
“I put your breakfast in the oven to keep it warm, you might have to make some more coffee though,” you call out to Poe, feeling far too relaxed to get up off your chair to help him. Things should feel different, you think, after what happened last night, but everything feels the same way it did yesterday.
It seems as if there should be some momentous change, that you should feel like a completely different person, but you don’t. You feel the same as always, that yearning tugging at your heart the same as it always does, and you’re worried for a moment that you had dreamed up the whole thing.
But then Poe smiles at you, and even though he doesn’t look any different, it feels different, like there’s a weight behind the gesture. It makes you feel all floaty and giddy and reassures you that last night wasn’t just your over active imagination, that your awkward and stuttering confession really did happen.
The morning passes like molasses, Kes eventually leaving you and Poe alone at the kitchen table to sip your coffee and talk about nonsense as Lucky naps in the pools of sunshine.
“I might paint today,” you say to no one in particular, turning to glance out the window at the expansive backyard you’ve come to love in the few short days you’ve been here.
“That sounds nice,” Poe responds, finally standing from the table to clear your dishes, “Dad wants to take us out to dinner for our last full day here, but otherwise nothing’s planned.”
“Perfect.”
After hours of doing nothing but sitting and drinking coffee, your legs feel like jello when you finally stand. Making your way to the sink, you don’t give Poe the chance to shoo you away before you grab the clean dishes to dry them off as Poe washes.
Even though you’re working like a well-oiled machine, it takes the two of you twice as long as it should to finish with the dishes with how many times you stop working while doubled over with laughter or flick each other with the water.
When you finally manage to get all the dishes clean and put away, you head back upstairs to change out of your pajamas and feel more like a human than before by brushing your teeth and doing some skincare. As you’re gathering up your paints, though, you might as well be a robot with the way your brain short-circuits as Poe changes his shirt right in front of you.
Wiping the corners of your mouth just in case you started drooling, you grab the rest of your supplies and let Poe know you’ll be on the back porch if he feels like joining you. He shouts out that he’ll be down in a few minutes as you close the door.
Coming downstairs, Lucky’s hot on your heels as you slide open the porch door and seat yourself on the top step. Lucky scampers off, chasing some sort of bird, so you take a second after getting your supplies set up the way you like to just take in the view. You already know you won’t be able to truly capture the beauty of the Dameron’s backyard, but you’re going to try your best.
Cracking open your watercolors, you start laying down blues and greens and oranges, and as you begin to focus on the sky, Poe comes out with a plate of fruit and sits down on the step next to you. Neither of you talk, basking in the noises of nature, of trees rustling and birds chirping and that quiet little hum that always seems to permeate the air during summer.
Hours pass, with Lucky traveling in and out of the house as he gets too hot or thirsty or tired from chasing animals, and Poe making sure you have plenty of snacks and drinks, keeping you company as you paint and repaint, trying to blend the colors just right. In your mind, even with all the adventures the two of you have taken together over the year you’ve been friends, this was your favorite time you’ve ever spent with Poe.
There was just something about existing next to each other, something about sitting and watching the light change in his childhood backyard that just seemed so magical. Maybe it was your conversation the night before or maybe that was just the way Poe always made you feel, but either way, you wanted to live here forever, on Kes’s back porch, sipping lemonade next to Poe as Lucky ran wild through the orange trees.
Even after you’ve set your small paintings aside for them to dry, you and Poe sit next to each other on the porch step, taking in all the sights and sounds of summer. Eventually, though, Poe heaves himself off the step and stands, stretching his hands above his head and making his shirt ride up just a little and making your brain short circuit.
“I better head inside and get ready for dinner, it’s starting to get late,” he tells you as he bends to begin gathering all the plates from the snacks you’d shared.
“I’ll be up in a few minutes,” you hand him another stack of plates and start to gather all your painting supplies before Poe heads inside, leaving you alone on the porch.
Letting the warm breeze and the bird song wash over you, you stand, leaning against the railing, for a few moments, just trying to take everything in. In the past year, you’d been trying to slow down, to enjoy every moment you’re awake instead of letting life pass you by. You give yourself a few minutes to feel grateful for everything you’ve done, for the friends and memories and accomplishments you’ve made, before gathering your painting supplies in one hand and heading inside.
Upstairs, you knock on the door to the guest bedroom before easing the door open to reveal the bathroom door shut and the shower running. Despite knowing you should wait until Poe was done and slip into the shower too, to wash away the sweat that’s been accumulating during your time outside, you’re feeling too sugglish and instead promise yourself you’ll shower when you get back from dinner.
As quickly as possible, you pull on a pair of shorts and a top that doesn’t have any paint stains before flopping back on the bed, debating with yourself whether or not you have time for a quick nap. Right as you close your eyes, the bathroom door opens, your internal argument distracting you from the noise of the shower turning off.
It really should be illegal for Poe to be walking around without a warning sign, as if it’s totally normal for someone to look this attractive at all hours of the day. He’s got a towel low on his waist, his curls still damp and beautifully defined, and you think this might actually be the moment your heart stops for good.
Instead, you gesture vaguely to the bathroom and slip inside the humid room, making an attempt at fixing your hair and makeup while trying to stop your heart from beating out of your chest. It seems strange how normal everything feels, how even still just a glance from Poe can send your heartbeat skyrocketing.
There’d been a part of you that was waiting for everything to feel different after last night, and there’s still a small corner of your brain that’s waiting for something momentous to happen. But you’re still you and Poe’s still Poe, and just looking at him still makes you feel like a schoolgirl with a raging crush on the boy who sits next to you in science.
After trying to make yourself more presentable and calming your raging heartbeat, you step out of the bathroom to find that Poe had gotten dressed. Even fully clothed, he’s so pretty you could cry and you're struck once again by how alive he seems, how bright and happy and beautiful. You feel infinitely lucky that you’re able to see him like this, all relaxed and full of sunshine.
Ever the gentleman, Poe confirms that you’re one hundred percent ready to go before he opens the bedroom door, leading you downstairs to meet with his dad before you all head out to dinner.
“Well, don’t you two look nice,” Kes says with a wink when you appear at the bottom of the stairs, and you can’t help but smile and look away, the attention making your skin prickle in a way that isn’t totally unpleasant.
Kes leads you out to his car and double checks that everyone is safely buckled before he even begins to pull out of the driveway. He bypasses the little town and continues down the highway before stopping in a small city a few more miles down the road. Though you can already tell that it’s bigger than Poe’s hometown, it still feels cozy and small, more town than metropolitan city.
“Alright, you kids get us a table and I’ll find a parking spot,” Kes says as he pulls up in front of a nice looking restaurant, cutting off Poe’s protest with just a look. Finally, Poe sighs before he exits the car, opening your door for you before his dad pulls away from the curb.
“I think he does all this on purpose,” Poe mumbles, and it’s so quiet you assume he’s just talking to himself, so you make no move to comment. Instead, you follow Poe inside the restaurant, taking in all of the decor while Poe secures a table with the hostess. You get seated almost immediately, pushing you to wonder if Kes really did have an agenda when it came to you and Poe.
Before you could think any harder on all the things Kes had done over the past few days, Poe tells you, “We used to come here all the time whenever there was something to celebrate. Anniversaries, honor roll, things like that.” He’s smiling, but there’s a certain heaviness to his voice that makes you conflicted about asking for anything more.
With perfect timing, Kes approaches the table and saves you from your internal debate, settling into a seat next to Poe. The three of you make small talk while you browse the menu and as you eat your meal, the conversation gains substance as you begin sharing your own childhood memories with them, weaving your stories with Poe’s and the few anecdotes Kes offers up.
At one point, you’re laughing so hard you’re a little worried that someone will ask you to leave the restaurant, but all you received were a few stares from neighboring tables. There’s just something about being with Kes and Poe together that makes you feel at home, and you’re going to miss spending your days with them.
When the check finally comes, the three of you argue over who’s paying and you consider slipping your card to the waitress while Kes and Poe bicker, but Kes is faster than you are and ends up paying for the meal with a victorious smile. It’s a nice change of pace from the family life you’d left behind, where everyone argued about who had to pay for dinner and not who wanted to pay most.
The drive back to Kes’s house is full of more stories as you pass by different buildings and parks, all of them seemingly attached to a fond memory for Kes. Lucky greets you by the door, and you’re struck by just how much you’ll miss the rambunctious dog and his desperate need for attention.
Wanting to stay up as late as possible and make the most out of your last night, you head up to the guest bathroom to shower and get comfortable, answering some missed messages but rolling your eyes and ignoring all the texts from Finn full of teasing and an absurd amount of heart emojis. When you return downstairs, you’re delighted to see that Kes had pulled out a pile of photo albums, Poe’s obvious dread only increasing your excitement.
“Ok, I’m showering so I don’t have to deal with you two,” Poe says with a groan as he exits the living room and you get comfortable next to Kes, flipping open the first album on the stack. It’s mostly full of baby pictures of Poe and all his firsts, but there are a few pictures throughout the book of Kes and a woman you assume is Poe’s mother.
He hasn’t told you much, but from what you’ve pieced together, Poe’s mother had fallen in love with Kes at the Air Force academy, gotten married and had Poe relatively young, and she’d passed away before Poe was in middle school. You want to know more about her, know more about the woman who created one of your favorite people, but you don’t want to push Poe too hard. As much as you’d love to hear about all of his favorite memories with her, you don’t want to cause him any pain.
Moving on to the second book, you’re greeted with a picture of the woman smiling up at you, her squirmy son grinning in her arms.
“They have the same eyes,” you say quietly, taken aback by how similar they look and amazed at seeing those eyes you love so much staring back at you through time from a different body.
“I know,” Kes adds with sorrow coloring his voice, “everyone always says he has my eyes, but they’ve always been Shara’s.”
“She’s beautiful,” you can’t help but add as Kes’s fingers gently, lovingly trace across the photograph.
The two of you sit for a moment, soaking in the picture and processing the memories that came flooding back before you turn the page. Shara is missing from many of the pictures, and you feel a twinge in your heart because you know she was the one always behind the camera, capturing all those unforgettable moments without ever thinking about being remembered herself. You wonder how hard that must be for Kes, to look back at all those pictures and still feel her there but not be able to see her face, her joy and her laughter and those expressive eyes.
The mood begins to lighten as you stumble across more and more goofy pictures of Poe, and you’re laughing at one of him with the missing teeth and the broken arm when he comes back downstairs.
“Are you seriously still laughing at me?” He asks, sounding exasperated even as he sits next to you on the couch, greedily gathering the book onto his lap and starting to flip through the pages.
Hours pass with the three of you sitting on the couch, laughing and sharing the stories that go along with all of the pictures. There’s a point, when Poe looks around ten, that Kes stops being in so many pictures and when you realize why, you’re close to crying. Instead, you promise yourself to ask more about what Poe remembers about his mother, to help her story and life live on, even now that Poe’s spent most of his life without her.
Even with the undercurrent of sadness that fades the longer you look through the pictures, you end up laughing so hard your stomach hurts and you’re worried you’re going to stop breathing. It’s close to midnight when you finally finish looking through all the pictures, and even then you don’t feel ready to sleep.
“Alright, I’m going to bed,” Kes says as he stands with a sigh, “I’ll make you kids breakfast before you leave tomorrow.” With a final goodnight, Kes makes his way upstairs while you and Poe make your way to the back porch. There’s just something that draws you out there, some inexplicable urge that pulls you outside to gaze over the expansive land.
It’s even more beautiful at night, and a part of you wants to stay out there and paint, watch the ways the moonlight differs from the sunshine with the different hues of orange and blue and green that paint the backyard.
“I’m gonna need a house with a porch like this,” you say, leaning over the railing to get an unobstructed view of the yard, to take it all in one last time.
“Yeah?”
“Mhm,” you turn to look at him and are greeted with a lazy smile, as if it would be hard work for him to have any other expression when he looks at you.
“Ready for bed?”
“I guess,” you reply, because even though you want to spend the rest of your life on the porch, you know you’re going to need your sleep before the drive home tomorrow. There’s a part of you that doesn’t want to go back, to return to your normal routine and your empty apartment and your schedule that never seems to match up with your friends.
As you slip into the guest bed for the last time, you’re hit with the realization that tomorrow night, you’ll be sleeping alone again. It keeps you awake, as Poe lays a gentle hand over your waist and falls asleep, because you’re really not sure if you’ll be able to sleep without him.
Even though it was only three nights, you’d become so accustomed to your little routine together, the way you wove around and moved seamlessly together as if that was the way things always were and always would be. You never thought it would be this hard to come to terms with, that you’d lose sleep over losing sleep for the rest of your life.
Because you know that once you go back home, everything goes back to normal. The little bubble of magic that surrounds Kes’s home will be broken, and reality will seep in and you won’t know how to navigate life anymore when everything seems dull in comparison to the days you’ve spent here. You and Poe will have a whole new connection to navigate, one that you haven’t even mentioned to each other since your fumbled confessions.
It all starts gnawing at you, all these little worries and insecurities come crawling out to pick you apart. You wonder if you’ll need to play pretend again, act like you never said anything and act like you aren’t crushed every time you see his face. You’re not sure how to cope with all the changes, all the new memories that’ll inhabit your brain and bring you back here whenever life seems dull.
Eventually, after what seems like hours, your eyelids droop closed and you’re pushed off to a dreamless sleep, one that comes to an end much too soon when Poe gently shakes your shoulder. He’s already showered and his belongings are packed, and you feel awful about slowing him down because you know it’s a long drive home but he’s smiling at you and everything seems more bearable in the morning light.
After a quick shower and a speedy repacking of all of your things, you head downstairs to eat one last breakfast with Kes and Poe, one that you wish you could prolong for the rest of the day. All you want is to live in that sunlit kitchen with the door to the porch for the rest of your life.
Still, when it’s time to go, Kes hands you and Poe your own travel mugs and bags of food, snacks and sandwiches he made special just for you, and it truly hits you how similar he is to his son. Really, there should be no surprise why you’d felt such a connection to Kes after only spending a short time with him because he reminds you of Poe in almost every way, down to the gray curls adorning his head.
The goodbyes are extended, and you spend more time talking in the driveway by Poe’s car than you did eating breakfast. You’re reluctant to let Lucky go, and you know your day isn’t going to seem complete without the needy dog demanding some belly rubs from you. Giving Kes one last hug and thanking him for the thousandth time for all his hospitality, you head to the car and let the father and son have the goodbye they need.
“You ready to head home?” Poe asks a few minutes later when he slides into the driver's seat, Kes waving and watching from the front porch. You want to say no, want to ask for more time, for the rest of your life to be spent with no responsibilities and to wake up next to Poe every morning, to spend your days laughing and painting and enjoying every second.
But you miss your friends greatly, and you miss the predictability of your job. As lonely as it can be, you miss your apartment, with your art prints and decorative pillows and candles, and you miss the way the sun streams through your windows on long summer days. You miss your weekly hangouts and the way summer seems to turn every day into an adventure.
“Yeah, I had a great time but I’m excited to get home.”
