Dear Lover of Light
Abigail Carroll
Dear Lover of Light,
There lived a priest so in love with light it drove him mad. Paint was his thing. When he could no longer preach, he hopped a train south, took up a brush, turned zinc and lead and chrome into gaudy, wild- petaled ambassadors of the dawn. He slapped stars as big as brooches on the sky, danced crows across bowing fields of wheat, exalted a bowl of onions, a bridge, a pipe, a chair, a bed. Postmen and prostitutes were his friends— so too were irises, almond trees, windmills, clouds. Francis, if you think of a painting as a kind of song, he too canticled the sun.

The Public Domain and Creative Bankruptcy, How To Get the Most Out Of It?
The Public Domain and Commodification: So 2024 started, with a lot of buzz around the public domain and the world’s most famous mouse, no I’m not talking about Basil the Great Mouse Detective. At the start of this year, the copyright on Steamboat Willie and thus the first designs of Mickey Mouse expired, and much like when Winnie the Pooh entered the public domain in the US in 2022, several…

@solmints-messyocdiary’s Odile post earlier had me considering showing some Inspirations for Abigail!
Tumblr media
Top to bottom, Left to right:
Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty (og version bc she has more fabulous clothing lol, the purple cape ugh 😩👌🏻)
The Evil Queen from Snow White & the Seven Dwarves (Apples being her favourite food… Same green eyes too, now that I think about it)
The Wicked Witch of The West from The Wizard of Oz (Evil witch drip)
Elvira from Elvira, Mistress of the Dark
The Dunwich Horror by H.P Lovecraft (her backstory stuff… deep lore stuff… those who know, know.)
The Salem Witch Trials (where she got her name)
Carroll Borland from Mark of The Vampire
Type O Negative’s “Black No. 1” (inspired her appearance, honestly pick any TON song and it suits her)
Mercyful Fate - “Evil” (the “I was born in a cemetery” lyric inspired her birth and her necromancy stuff lol, also the album Melissa is just straight up Abigail core)
She is a combination of a whole lot of fictional witch tropes and myths, goth girl stereotypes and a teensy weensy bit of Lovecraft in the otherworldliness and eldritch type way. Think of her as the mysterious ooky spooky lady in black you see in films sometimes, but given a bit more personality. That being… the mystery is there to hide vulnerability, she is actually just coping with trauma lol
I’m still trying to figure out her actual abilities tbh. Her aesthetic is definitely on point though. I’m sort of in the process of writing her backstory fic but it’s in the background to my other scheduled WIPs
Also I’ll do Max’s as well after this one!

Which young actor/actress do you think was poised for Hollywood greatness but has now faded or dimmed a bit?
Chloe Grace Moretz comes to mind.
Great question - I love discussing this kind of stuff! "Young" meaning in their 20s? If that's the case, then along side her...
Abigail Breslin
Madeline Carroll
Willow Shields (I still wonder why her career didn’t take off after the last ‘The Hunger Games’ film, which came out in 2015)
AnnaSophia Robb (her career kind of tanked after The Carrie Diaries got canceled, but she’s coming back in the spotlight and’s been thriving since!)
Josh Hutcherson
Hailee Steinfeld
I'm excluding Nickelodeon and Disney Channel stars, and I think the reason is both obvious and self-explanatory.
Wait... you only asked for one? My bad.

🦜 🦉?
💜
🦜 a pretty quote (you like the prose, or symbolism, or it's poetic, or you just like how it feels/the word choice!) Oh, wow, I'm not sure I'd describe anything I've written/am writing as pretty or poetic, but I'll share a line that I think is nice (and bird-related 😂): In the depths of her proud New England heart, she’s glad that she’s dealing with California heat better than Jed, although a penguin would deal with California heat better than Jed.
🦉 a clever quote (something you're proud of!) Okay, this is from a work I posted a couple of months ago, but as you know, I'm really proud of this fic, especially this part: Professional and public scrutiny awaits her. The members of the Medical Board may be fierce, but the American public is merciless.
A team has helped choose her outfit – professional, nothing too revealing, not too sexy, but not puritanical either. So, she wears a gray suit and heels. Her heels aren’t too high, her skirt isn’t too short.
When she talks to Leo, he speaks to her in a semi-patronizing way that powerful men tend to use when they speak to women, no matter how powerful or competent. Look repentant, but don't hang your head, smile, but don't look smug.
Once again, Abbey is reminded how cruel the world can be towards women.
No one asked Jed what he was wearing when he took the censure.
And this one isn't technically smart, only nerdy, but I haven't posted anything from this WIP anywhere before, so have a snippet from a completely normal conversation (might as well qualify as a pretty quote too, if you want): “Tough. That’s gotta be the nerdiest name I’ve ever heard, and I was named after Abigail Adams. It could’ve been worse, though. Your grandfather’s great grandfather could’ve been Charles Carrol of Carrollton.”
Jed’s face lit up.
“Or Button Gwinnett,” he offered.
“William Whipple,” said Abbey.
“Elbridge Gerry.” Abbey looked at him for a second and then she burst into laughter. Jed decided it was the most beautiful sound he’d ever heard. He also noticed that her nose crinkled up when she laughed and promptly decided that it was the most beautiful thing he'd ever seen.
“You made him up!” Abbey accused. more wip birds

Delphi Murders: Defense Team Withdraws Amid Alleged Leaked Photos
Tumblr media
Delphi Murders Defense Team Steps Down After Alleged Photo Leak The defense team representing Richard Allen, the suspect in the Delphi murders, withdrew from the case due to allegations that leaked crime scene photos came from one of the attorney's associates. These disturbing images were shared through text messages and on social media. They depicted the crime scene in the wooded area near the Monon High Bridge Trail in Delphi, Indiana. It's the place where Liberty "Libby" German, 14, and Abigail "Abby" Williams, 13, were tragically murdered after they vanished during a hike on February 13, 2017. A Sudden Turn of Events Carroll County Judge Fran Gull addressed the surprising development during a recorded hearing, stating, "We've had an unexpected turn of events, ladies and gentlemen. Earlier this afternoon, the defense attorneys have withdrawn their representation of Mr. Allen." As a result, Mr. Allen is entitled to new legal counsel, and he was sent back to the Westville Correctional Facility. The defense team, consisting of Andrew Baldwin and Bradley Rozzi, agreed to cooperate with their successors, as directed by Judge Gull. The Legal Twist Baldwin's attorney, David Hennessy, clarified that the defense attorneys did not voluntarily quit the case but instead withdrew due to what he referred to as "coercive circumstances." According to Hennessy, the attorneys had developed a strong and trusting bond with Allen prior to their withdrawal. Hennessy argued that disqualifying Baldwin from representing Allen would harm his right to counsel and hinder a timely trial. He stressed that disqualifying counsel is an extreme measure usually reserved for conflicts of interest. In this case, the issue arose due to individuals outside the attorney's office unlawfully obtaining and disseminating information. Background on Richard Allen Richard Allen was arrested in October 2022 for the 2017 murders of Liberty German and Abigail Williams. Prosecutors assert that evidence from the crime scene links back to Allen's home, and he reportedly confessed to the crimes during phone calls from jail. Controversial Defense Claim Allen's defense has alleged that the girls' deaths were part of a ritualistic sacrifice performed by members of a pagan Odinist cult in Indiana. They argued that certain items at the crime scene were arranged in patterns specific to Odinism. However, prosecutors dismissed these claims as "colorful" and "unprofessional." The Investigation The investigation into the Delphi murders has been marked by controversy and a lack of public disclosure due to a gag order. The next hearing in Allen's case is scheduled for later this month. Inquiries made to Baldwin and Rozzi's office remained unanswered. Read the full article

TOMORROW - Help Us Make a Commercial! Do you love reading? Do you want to get your friends and neighbors excited about reading? Then, join Wheeling’s mayor, Glenn Elliot, and West Virginia poet laureate, Marc Harshman, to promote our city-wide reading initiative by being part of our commercial. We will gather at the "Almost Heaven" swing at Heritage Port on Wednesday, May 24 at 2:00 pm to create a short video. No acting experience required. Just bring your enthusiasm for books. TODAY - Noon: Wheeling Reads Launch: All Lies Begin with Truth with Anthony Viola All Lies Begin with Truth dramatizes the complexities of natural gas extraction, its legalities and impact on a small town's economy, infrastructure, and surrounding environment, using three distinctive perspectives. Eris Carroll is a young and energetic activist negotiating her place in a world where societal rules and cultural norms cater to and support patriarchy. Lionel Boone’s past indifferences and mounting guilt over surviving a kettle bottom collapse taunts him daily. Cass Taylor’s cultural role in life was predetermined before her birth. She struggles with the realities of being trapped in small town USA and within the confines of a patriarchal culture. Her somber outlook on the town, her life, and the human spirit is often chilling as the realization becomes clear that as a civilized species, we are imprisoned, being all too dependent on energy and those corporations who provide it for us. Anthony J. Viola is a Professor of English at Marshall University where he teaches literature and creative writing.
