the baffling thing is people are perfectly capable of noting that, say, Al-Qaeda was a bad and fucked up organization AND SIMULTANEOUSLY the circumstances that led to it being created and funded were fucked up and the fault of western interference in the area, why can't people extend that to hamas? hamas can be a horrendous thing that came from the horrendous treatment of palestinians, two things can be true
And really, the birth of both is parallel in themes! America funded, trained, and equipped Al-Queda during the Soviet-Afghan War because we were trying to undercut the power of Marxists in Russia. Israel allowed the Mujama Al-Islamiya to operate in the open in Palestine and even legally recognized it as a charity.
Tumblr media
They did all of this because they were more preoccupied with fighting the Marxist party Fatah, which was very much in the vein of leftist guerrilla movements of the 70’s and 80’s, and they saw the inherent conflict between the secular, leftist Fatah and the religious extremism of Mujama Al-Islamiya, which later became Hamas.
Israel, much like the US, created their own monster because they were scared of Marxist boogeymen, and that monster has destroyed the lives of Palestinians just as much as Al-Queda has destroyed the lives of Afghanis.

Hello darlings!
I'm still alive/here. I know I owe all the things and I appreciate you all following my "queue that" rule because I haven't been on my computer to write let alone draft. In case you're wondering what I've been up to I'll give you a bulleted list of the teacher life near D.C. under the read more.
🩵 Natty
Here's some chaos:
My student pulled the fire alarm and rather than addressing that for the felony it is, kiddo is on a 1 month suspension (you get 45 days for fighting) Worth noting this student was previously expelled 2 years ago for a gun situation.
We've had 2 mob fights at my school and another at the next closest high school (they also had a stabbing and the response was "well at least it wasn't our school on the news this time")
I've had more meetings than there were days of the week and worked past 5 nearly every day (we love unpaid work... i'm talking like full time job hours of unpaid labor)
My school has gone through more than 12 principals in my 6 years here and the new one has given me 9 blocks of classes to have my students research, make posters, assemble 550 meal kits, complete a reflection, and present a summary (to whom? idk bro) All while never answering my emails... in case you're wondering it costs 20k to get the groceries for this task alone. As of right now I have 3 students that can build the 550 meal kits. We have 2 80 minute blocks to build them all or our low income families have nothing to eat over spring break 👍
Our bell schedule is changing so that we'll have 3 lunches with students required to be in the cafeteria, instead of 2 where they're in our classrooms. This will end all in school clubs (RIP Four Square Club 😢 ) and we need 350 more chairs in the cafeteria 😂 fyi I had to have 3 students standing per block for 4 weeks because we couldn't get desks and chairs for my classes of 33. When I got desks they gave me elementary cubby desks. (I teach HS. The average 'kid' is like 5'5 hahaha)
The students booed the new principal so loudly at the pep rally that I could hear it with earplugs in and she didn't send their bitch asses back to class. She said, "Hmm, I think I hear some boos? Wouldn't be the first time, won't be the last."
Here's some cute shit:
My nearly non-verbal gem of a human told me a joke: Why did the sun go to class? To get a little brighter!
That same student: His current hyperfixation is roasting my lack of an immune system. He calls me his weakest superhero 😂
In a room full of extremely politically divergent teenagers, they almost unanimously agreed that a person facing criminal charges shouldn't be allowed to run for office and then had civil discourse about it.
The hype of my Afghani students getting to teach their class the Arabic alphabet when we started our new module. (Also their hype over the teachers showing up to their club's fundraiser)
A parent made shirts for the seniors on our 🏀 team (just 4 boys). They got to pick their favorite and most impactful teacher and she wanted each one to have a different teacher wearing theirs but 2 of them insisted it be me and wouldn't budge 😭 (also one of them interviewed to play ball overseas so 🤞 for him)
A parent made the staff valentines day cupcakes
A student in culinary arts gave me a banging cinnamon roll the size of my head
A quiet student from last year came by to tell me he bowled nearly 300 and made brownies- they were not pot brownies, I took the risk and it was worth it 😂
2 of my kids with over 100 absences showed up this week! They won't pass but 👍 nice to know they're like alive

For music taste: Revy and Balalaika 👀
revy:
- lots and lots and lots of punk!!
- i know she’s canonically into metal which i do like for her, but i feel like she’d maybe lean into the punkier side still
- Iggy and the Stooges, The Damned, Bad Brains
- The Deftones are one of her favourites (since to me, they sound somewhere between heavy punk and metal)
- anything that’s fast and shredding lol
- Also I think there’s be a touch of riot grrrl in there too - bikini kill etc (bc she is so gay like come on)
- (sorry tangent) i think as a kid she was probably also influenced by the 90s new york rap scene, The Notorious B.I.G and so on..
- she makes a reference to Light My Fire by the Doors, so I feel like she’d also be into kind of late sixties-early seventies (kind of psychedelic) rock?
- The Doors and Jimi Hendrix for. sure.
- i actually made a playlist for her a while ago, but it’s more of a concept playlist as opposed to music i think she’d actually listen to - i can link it tho if ur interested!!
whoo okay sorry that was long
balalaika:
- we know this girl slayer was at war during the 80s, i feel like the only music she may have has occasional access to was through a small shitty radio
- this leads me to two conclusions: she developed a begrudging love for traditional afghani music, and after coming home from war, she would try to consume as much 80s media as possible
- something about her just feels incredibly 80s, her power suit (idk if it’s just the art style) but i’ve always just assumed it has shoulder pads??, the cigars, her nails as well (i know that’s a weird one but they kind of remind me of Nomi in Showgirls - which is a painfully 80s film lol)
- so ANYWAYS all that to say: she’s an 80s girly
- Kate Bush (i’ve said before, I’ll say it again)
- i think she’d find the song Babooshka amusing…
- Kate Bush always used a lot of string and woodwind instruments which kind of feel reminiscent of folk music?
- she is also an oingo boingo fan which i think is incredible, i think she’d also have a little bit of an affection for other new wave bands of the early 80s
- i’m kind of seeing some Blondie?? (maybe some grace jones too if she’s feeling good)
- or like Ultravox or some shit? she reminds me of the song Vienna
- i feel like she’s also weirdly quite classic, i think she’d be into early 60s gogo music too
- i’m thinking Nancy Sinatra and Francois Hardy ( as they have a kind of moodiness to them)
- on the same note, there’s also a really incredible cellist called Jacqueline du Pré who wrote these dark, deep orchestral pieces which fuck really hard
- going back to her time at war, i found a beautiful song recently called Wa Wa Leili which is an afghani folk song which kind of gives me the same vibe as Kate Bush?? like i wouldn’t be surprised if it influenced her in some way - anyways i think Balalaika would get down to it
- Also Chet Baker
okay sorry that was even longer i think
this is was super fun!! tysm for the ask 🫶🫶 i’d love to hear what u think!! 🕴🎧

You Don’t Need to Go All the Way to Afghanistan for Afghani Hash, Baby!
Tumblr media
Afghani hash culture goes back thousands of years. It is truly a traditional craft in Afghanistan to concentrate the trichomes from massive cannabis farms into a gooey brick of hashish that has been an important part of their culture and economy for a long, long time. The west was widely introduced to these treasures in the 1960’s as “The Hippie Trail” was popularized, a journey roughly from Morocco to Nepal. Many western hippies ended up staying in Afghanistan for longer than expected after finding a thriving hash culture. Bringing these treats home helped grow an already thriving industry in Afghanistan. Before dabs were a thing, this was the only real option for cannabis concentrates. Homemade hash was reserved for growers pretty much at this time.
Since the normalization and legalization of cannabis, genetically speaking it is difficult to find anything that has any real connection to the past and has a tradition. Afghani style hash is one of the few traditional things that Canadian smokers are lucky enough to be able to try. There is a real sense of history in this kind of product and, bonus, it also hits pretty hard. For those who constantly complain that it’s not like the old days, traditional Afghani hash pretty much stands unchanged. The biggest difference today is that you can get it delivered to your door. I think most would agree that’s a net positive.
The finest Afghani hash finds its origins within the Northern provinces nestled between the Hindu Kush mountains and the Russian border, encompassing areas such as Balkh and Mazar-i-Sharif. You might notice some popular weed strain names simply in the geographical locations here. That’s no accident obviously. If you want to know where your Kush’s lineage came from, it’s here. It’s pretty cool you can still find the ancestry of our modern strains in these regions.
The cannabis plants chosen for hash production are compact, bushy indicas, meticulously cultivated. In the Afghan hash-making process, hands skillfully press the hashish after a subtle infusion of tea or water. Patiently, the hashish is kneaded until it transforms into a state of remarkable elasticity, exuding a potent and captivating aroma. Within the Afghan hash-making tradition, the hash is meticulously shaped into balls or blocks, a form carefully designed to minimize exposure to air.
Afghani Hash typically boasts a THC content ranging between 18% and 22%, recognized for its robust and spicy aroma and flavour profile. The exterior appearance may appear dark, bordering on black, while the interior presents shades of deep green or brown.
Renowned for its potent psychoactive properties, Afghani Hash has gained a reputation for inducing a euphoric state in its users. Remarkably, its full potential can be realized in just five minutes. For individuals unacquainted with hash or cannabis, it is advisable to exercise caution and initiate consumption with a conservative dosage due to the potential side effects that could manifest.
Check out the Afghani Apple Hash. This high grade hash originates directly from the northern realms of Afghanistan, a region celebrated for yielding some of the nation’s most exceptional hashish. What sets the Afghani hash apart from its counterparts is the substantial investment of time and artistry dedicated to its creation. Crafted with meticulous care, Afghani hashish is painstakingly hand-pressed and artistically refined to attain a state of absolute perfection. The outcome is a product that boasts remarkable flexibility and exudes an immensely alluring fragrance.
The flavour palette of the Afghani Apple Hash is characterized as profoundly earthy, embellished with subtle notes of spice and a woody mellowness. Whether meticulously crumbled within a bong or artfully rolled into a joint, our AAAA+ hash promises to leave an indelible mark, even on the most discerning of cannabis enthusiasts.
Enjoying your hash is easy. Incorporating hash into your smoking routine can be seamlessly achieved with several methods. One straightforward way involves blending hash into your joint, elevating your smoking experience with a little extra punch. Alternatively, the option of utilizing a pipe presents itself, providing a distinct way to enjoy hash. For those opting for the pipe route, it is advisable to place a mesh-style screen atop the bowl of your pipe. This precautionary measure prevents the inadvertent inhalation of heated hash fragments, ensuring a smooth and uninterrupted smoking encounter. It also makes the hash last longer without pulling through the bowl prematurely.
Hash made like the Afghani’s has become popular enough that the tradition has spread to countries like Columbia as well. Perhaps because of the ease of adoption and lack of solvents, sticky bricks of mechanically separated hashish are available from all around the world with rather unhelpful and dubious markings. Either way, it’s likely fire.
If you’re looking for a throwback high or something different in your routine, grab yourself some old-school hash and smoke like your dad. Potsmart has links to plenty of fun hashes to test out. Many of them are very cheap per gram and almost everything has a coupon, so that’s helpful.

Heroes - Chapter 2
Chpt. 1 , Masterlist , Chpt. 3
Pairing: Sgt. Elias Grodin x Female OC (Alexis Ryder)
Fandoms: Platoon (1986), Cherry (2021) WARNINGS: I'm just going to put down a blanket for the entire book/all chapters: graphic depictions of violence and gore, torture, explicit sexual content, attempted sexual assault, language, marijuana use
A.N. Thank you for the reblogs! These chapters are actually reposts from my Archive account which you can read here if you want the full thing, but I will continue to update here.
My father was a hero.
My father served in the army for over a decade before settling down with my mother to have a family. He’d been courageous, selfless, brave – everything that I aspired to be.
He was killed in 9/11, when he worked at a clerical position in the Pentagon, and one of the planes veered off and crashed straight through his office.
I was so young when he died, so young that my memories of his warm smile, his loving touch, were distant to me. But they were real.
And I remembered them as I rose the barrel of my gun to the three Afghanis who stood before me, and though my finger shook over the trigger, and something twisted my gut, something gnawed at my conscience, so did the memories of my father.
He was dead, because of them.
And I was here, because of him.
My finger tensed over the trigger, beginning to squeeze faintly.
“Barnes!” A yell split the air, and my finger relaxed, my head tilting up to view Elias and his squad converging over the hill.
Elias’ blue eyes, normally mirthful and gentle, flashed with fury, and his brows were knitted together, his chest rising and falling with ireful breath as he glared at his fellow sergeant.
“What the fuck is going on here?” Elias demanded, his own rifle held across his chest as he started towards us.
Barnes’ lip curled over his teeth, and he turned his head to me. “Do it, Ryder,” he growled.
Bunny shoved one of the Afghanis into a little line the soldiers had made them form, and he backed away, a grin pulled taut over buck-teeth that had probably earned him his nickname. He glanced to me expectantly, and I couldn’t have been sure, but in that moment, I was ashamed to think that the bloodlust in his eyes may have been mirrored by mine.
I pulled the trigger, and with each body that dropped, my rifle kicked viciously against my shoulder.
They fell, crimson bursting from their chests, raining across the earth, staining colourful robes a dark, dark red.
And then everything was just… quiet.
I lowered my gun, and let my gaze wander from the bodies at my feet to the blue eyes that caught mine over the crest of the hill.
I couldn’t really describe what was in Elias’ eyes when he looked at me.
But for some reason, whatever it was fractured my heart.
And then Bunny was laughing, high notes stringing into the air, and he threw an arm around me.
“Looks like Sugar Tits here has some gall in her after all,” he said, and laughter from Barnes’ squad ensued, and someone else jostled my shoulder.
I teetered on weak knees, my boots digging into the earth to ground myself as the men congratulated me and hooted and hollered, celebrated the death that stained the earth only a yard or so from my boots.
And I forced one of those fake smiles over my lips, went along with this celebration. I didn’t shrug Bunny off, or scowl, or snap at them for their remarks or their callousness.
But the celebration didn’t last, because Elias was charging Barnes, those blue eyes flashing once more in fury, and he slammed the butt of his rifle into my squad leader’s stomach.
Bunny’s arm left my shoulder, and everyone jumped into the chaos, tearing the two men off of one another. I stayed put, not wanting to intervene, but also still too paralyzed, still focused more on the bodies at my feet, at the way a little stream of blood trickled from the gaping mouth of the youngest Afghani, his eyes glazed over and empty.
---
I couldn’t sleep.
Despite how fatigued every muscle and tendon was, how lethargic I was when I’d wandered to the edges of our encampment, settled shakily down among the rocks and ferns, whenever I closed my eyes to sleep, images of bloodied  bodies painted my eyelids and the howls of agony from the soldiers that hadn’t made it today echoed in my ears.
But mostly, the fracture in my heart seemed to burrow deeper.
“And nothing, nothing will keep us together,” I sang softly, my lips forming broken notes spilled from aching lungs. “We can beat them, forever and ever. Oh, we can be heroes, just for one day.”
I swallowed a rock that had formed in my throat, and I closed my eyes, allowing the beautiful notes of the song to carry me away to another place, another time.
To my mother, and her warm smile, her loving touch. The woman who had practically raised me, after her husband’s death, who had only ever done what was best for me and showed me unconditional love, despite being alone in a world of death and monsters.
“Heroes” had been her favourite song. She’d sung it nearly every morning, while making breakfast, and nearly every night, before bed.
I realized now that she probably sang it to soothe herself of her own demons.
I had given her this iPod, as a gift, when she was in the hospital battling cancer. It was the only song she had managed to download before I watched the life fade from her twinkling eyes, and felt her fingertips slip from mine as I sang her to eternal rest.
She’d been a hero, too. She’d kept fighting, kept smiling, kept doing good for others even when her world must have been pitch darkness for the disease that had spread to her blood, for the loss that must have plagued her heart.
A tear pricked my eye, and I swallowed again, the knot in my throat building and twisting and culminating into something cruel and painful, and my lips scarcely formed the lyrics now. My spine dug against the rock behind me, and though my head was no longer burdened by the weight of my helmet and my hair now fell loose from its tight, constrictive bun, every part of me was heavier, so my chin dipped down and my skull rocked forward.
My lips parted to silently mouth the next lyric as my tear rolled onto my teeth, and I swept the saltiness away with my tongue, biting it harshly as I squeezed my eyes tighter shut.
Iron spiked my tongue as a rustling sounded from behind, and I nearly jumped out of my skin, ripping my headphones from my ears and reaching desperately for my rifle.
Through the darkness of the brush, the broken camouflage of one of the soldiers moved, and messy locks of hair fell over a headband that read “AIRBORNE”. Bright blue eyes shone in the luster of the moon.
“At ease,” Elias chuckled, his eyes darting to where my fingers curled around the barrel of my gun, relaxing now that I realized I wasn’t in danger.
But anxiety still wove itself into my gut all the same. Was he here to lecture me? Was he here to tell me that I was a bad person for what I’d done today?
I tucked my iPod into one of the pockets of the tac rig that lay beside me, and I said nothing. I didn’t want to encourage him, still didn’t want to be seen or heard with him, especially after what had occurred today.
As Elias settled down beside me, I took note of the bruise across his bottom jaw, of the red that streaked the side of his face and the dirt that had sullied freckled, sun-kissed skin.
“What’cha listenin’ to, Private?” he asked me as his knees came up to his chest, arms draping over them and his head lolling to the side so that those blue eyes could capture mine.
It took me a moment to respond, to even gather myself enough to, but after a wary glance around, I told him, “’Heroes’. David Bowie.”
Elias smiled, and his head rolled back against the rock, eyes seeking out the stars in the black sky.
“A classic,” he said. “You’ve got good taste.”
Though he meant it as a compliment, I couldn’t help but feel a pang of longing in my chest, for I wished that my mother could’ve sang it to me now, instead of murmuring out the lyrics from tear-stained lips and a throat thick with fear and bitter self-loathing.
A silence stretched between us, broken only by the sound of crickets and the faint rustling of wildlife along the branches of the alpine trees.
“You should get some sleep,” Elias finally said. “You’re taking next watch.”
I cast him a glance. His head was still rolled back against the rock, strands of untamed hair splayed this way and that against the surface and his eyes still fixed in the sky.
“I know,” I said, numbly. I didn’t want to admit that the events of the day were haunting me, that this knot in my throat wouldn’t wane and the moisture in my eyes wasn’t from lack of sleep but from this fracture in my heart.
“Can’t sleep, huh?” he said, and I realized that maybe this plight of mine was more obvious than I’d thought. He was good at reading people, or maybe just good at reading soldiers. “After what happened today, I don’t blame ya.”
I recalled the way he’d looked at me after I’d pulled the trigger on those Afghanis, and a flicker of confusion shot through me. My brow furrowed, and my lips parted to utter, “You don’t? After…” I swallowed again in vain against the weight in my throat. “… what I did?”
“You were just obeying orders. Weren’t ya?”
Those blue eyes flicked to mine again, head rolling across the rock, and suddenly I felt as if they were impaling me, eviscerating my soul. I felt as if they were a pair of scales, weighing my conscience.
I wanted to say yes, should have said yes. That it was Barnes, that it was only Barnes who’d been responsible for the lifeless eyes that had stared up at the sky and the blood that had trickled from bodies still warm with faded life.
But I wasn’t so sure that it had been entirely him. It was my finger that had pulled the trigger, after all. It was my bloodlust that I’d seen mirrored in Bunny’s wild eyes.
I tore my gaze from his, because I couldn’t handle it anymore, couldn’t gaze into those bright, blue scales, couldn’t bear to see judgment swim in their gentle depths.
“I don’t know,” I murmured, my voice a mere ghost in the breeze.
Thankfully, he rolled his head back to gaze up at the stars, and said, “Don’t beat yourself up over it. This war’s made every one of us do things we end up regrettin’.”
“You think I regret it?” I said, my gaze snapping back to him as the hairs along my arms prickled.
He looked back over, blue eyes once again meeting mine, observing me, dragging lazily across every feature of my face, as if gauging this.
But I didn’t want him to answer for me. So I added, “Those people weren’t innocent. They were gonna cost us lives, like Barnes said.”
Blue eyes narrowed slightly. “You really think that?”
I had to think that. I had to trust in Barnes that I’d done the right thing in following his orders, had to trust in my father that he would’ve been proud of my decision.
“I have to,” I uttered, again so numbly, but so earnestly, and I allowed my gaze to drift from his as I swallowed again against the knot that seemed to build and tighten in my throat, and forced down the tears that threatened to spill from my eyes.
“I should go get some sleep,” I said, as I stood, gathering my rig and helmet from the forest floor. “Goodnight, Elias.”
I turned my back as I twisted my hair back into its constrictive bun, and slung my rig over my shoulders.
“Goodnight…” came his response. “Alex, your name is?”
I froze in my tracks.
“It’s Ryder,” I said stubbornly.
“Alex, if you start justifyin’ the blood on your hands because of what Barnes says, you ain’t gonna like what you see the next time you look in a mirror.”
His words tore at my conscience, at the blackness that I tried to ignore in my soul, at the uncertainty that plagued me, and this frightened me, and every instinct in my body wanted to lash out.
I turned on my heel, gathering a breath in my lungs only to expel it with a bitter intensity, a firmness that surprised me. “I don’t need my morality of all things questioned when I’m fighting for peoples’ lives.”
Elias didn’t so much as blink. Those blue eyes were still staring at me, perfectly serene, his body still lax against the rock.
“You don’t talk to Barnes like that,” he observed, lifting his head and his mess of tawny-brown locks from the surface of the rock. “You’re scared of him, ain’t ya?”
I eyed him warily, and turned again, settling my helmet over my skull and clasping its strap tightly beneath my chin.
“Goodnight, Sergeant,” was all that I said, before leaving the stars and the crickets and the blue-eyed soldier behind me.

Websleuths. Dumbasses.
Fuck true crime part 2
The true crime genre grows more popular with each passing year. It’s a multifaceted industry between all the Netflix documentaries, TV shows, podcasts and YouTube channels that sickeningly profit off of other people's personal tragedies for monetary gain.
But what if sensationalism wasn’t the tip of the iceberg? Introducing websleuths, true crime fans even higher off their asses. They think they’re smarter and more capable than law enforcement and dedicate their spare time to cracking cold cases from their mothers’ basements. They even have their own website! (Note that the term websleuth applies to everybody online that does this though, not just the people in this particular corner of the internet.)
I can’t even begin to describe how dumb these people are. They have a combined iq of five. Their “sleuthing” is them bouncing the same outlandish conspiracies off each other. None of them, including their so-called “experts,” know the first thing about criminology, but they pretend they’re better than the police. Inventing conspiracy theories isn’t going to solve a murder. Leave the investigating to the actual detectives, guys.
Honestly though, we shouldn’t be laughing at them. I mean, we should, but we should also be creeped out. Their intrigue borders obsession. A bunch of the members have profile pics of iconic missing persons, and they post all sorts of creepy messages that go something like, “Poor little sweet precious baby heavenly star we hope u find your way home soon God will avenge u xoxoxoxoxo ily <333.” Get help.
Most websleuths are relatively harmless clowns who exist purely to make fools of themselves for our entertainment. However, there are cases where sleuths have genuinely harmed victims, their families and active investigations by being nosy, delusional motherfuckers.
For example, take the disappearance of Lina Sardar Khil, a toddler who vanished from a playground in San Antonio. True crime fans started a vicious racist conspiracy theory that basically goes like this: Lina’s parents are muslim Afghani refugees, so they must have murdered/sold their child and covered it up, because, you know. For more detail, here is a link to one of the many posts on true crime subreddits perpetuating this lunatic speculation. Lina’s parents were harassed in public to such an extent that they stopped hosting community searches.
Leave it to a bunch of armchair detectives to hinder a missing person investigation with their stupid ass conspiracies. These people are grieving the loss of their child for fuck’s sake. Keep it to yourselves if you guys think they’re suspicious. That’s for cops to decide, not you.
Another remarkably similar example is Dulce María Alavez. Like Lina, Dulce was also abducted from a playground while her mother’s back was turned. Noema Alavez Perez was a teen mom and high school dropout with a history of substance abuse. She was too busy partying to play an active role in her children’s lives, who were primarily raised by their grandparents. Not the cleanest parenting track record. On the day Dulce was kidnapped, Noema was distracted in her car 30 yards away from where her daughter was playing.
Yes, Noema was irresponsible. But the online harassment she has been subjected to is uncalled for. Scroll through any given online forum and you have a bunch of keyboard warriors calling her a “welfare bum” and a “whore,” making racist remarks (she’s Hispanic), pinning Dulce’s disappearance on her and even accusing her of selling her daughter into sex slavery. E.g. This documentary and this Facebook post. Apparently, she’s suspicious because she’s not bawling her eyes out on TV. Never mind that emotional numbness is a common symptom of grief, trauma and depression. The language barrier totally isn’t a factor either.
Good grief. She was an immature teenager who made a terrible mistake that’s going to haunt her for the rest of her life, not a sociopath behind her daughter’s disappearance. What’s even sadder about the whole situation is that from the looks of it, Noema has really turned her life around since 2019. But that doesn’t matter to the self-righteous internet sleuths and their warped sense of justice—guilty until proven innocent.

Heaven, part 1: Southern Afghanistan, late 20th Century
[Editor's Note: The following article comes from an unpublished autobiography, written in broken Arabic script with the styling of the Balochi dialect, with elements of Pashtun.]
It's warm, and the sun is shining.
You are a street sweeper, and it's a hot day in town.
Between the news of fighting and the horrible heat, you're not too happy with the current state of affairs.
Too much to handle and hassle with for a nine year old. What does yet another superpower need from this place, anyway?
You sigh.
Luckily, this little place is far away from much of the fighting. Stuck between impenetrable mountains, the vast desert, and the nearby [REDACTED], not much is likely to happen here.
At least, that's what you thought until just now...
...when a figure appeared, crawling across the hazy horizon, the heat seemingly fracturing their body.
It takes you a moment to take the sight in, before you shout in surprise and run back to your nearby home.
"Papa! Mama! There's someone...!" You cry aloud.
Your parents, in the middle of finishing their lunch, look at you with bemusement.
"Hey, little one. Take a breath - it's hot out today. What is the matter?" Your mummy smiles sweetly.
"It's... there's... a person... they look in bad shape..." You say slowly.
The two adults look at one another, before slowly standing. Your mother grabs your arm firmly but calmly, and takes you outside. In the corner of your eye, you note your father reaching under the table to reveal a small firearm.
Outside, the sun continues to beat down relentlessly.
The figure is crawling closer, and they're in absolutely no shape to do so.
Blood pouring from their every orifice, it's scarlet liquid boiling in the summer heat.
Their hands grasping at the ground, fighting for every movement.
They're missing an eye; and the one eye they have...
You'll never forget the look they had.
"Oh, goodness...!" Your mother says.
Not much could surprise your mum; she'd seen blood and guts before, helped one of our neighbours give birth...
But what shocked her here was not the blood, nor the cold stare of death ---
But the pair of gloriously darkened wings sprouting from the figure's back, oozing with what could only be described as shadow.
...
A few hours later, the broken figure is sipping from a small cup of water in your bedroom.
The closest room to the front door, you had helped your parents pick them up and drag them in from the sun, hastily washing their wounds and binding their cuts together. None of you were good at medical science, but you tried your best - and the effort appeared to be paying off.
They didn't speak at all, but you could just feel that they were grateful. That cold, hating look in their good eye had been replaced with one of collected warmth.
They notice you staring, and smile in a somewhat crooked manner. Their wings shake, almost instinctively...
Nervously, perhaps.
"Can I... get you anything else? I know we don't have much, and we can't get you a doctor anytime soon, but..." You stutter to the Stranger.
They smile again, and shake their head.
In their time of recovering, you'd had a more detailed look - or, more accurately, stare - at them.
They appeared to be in some sort of uniform; not military, nor governmental, or academic. They were neither Russian nor Afghani; not Arabic, nor Persian; indeed, you can't recall anyone with such a set of features before.
Not least the set of eerily glowing wings perched upon their spine.
Cables of seeming gold formed bone from the shoulder blades, curving from the human shoulder into broad spans of an angelic vision. If not for the pure, dripping darkness that fell from that gold. Try as you might, you can't physically focus on them for too long without your vision going a bit blurry.
Everything about the Stranger screamed out of place to you. An unknown uniform on an unknown race with an unknown set of physical appendages. A terrifying sense of calm mixed with untamed power. For now, that creeping sense, that odd adrenaline, wasn't directed towards you - but even the edge of such an aura still gave you goosebumps.
The Stranger blinked, before nodding and standing up. Your eyes widen, and you jump backwards.
"Ah, you shouldn't...! You're still... hurt...?" You begin, before looking closer.
The wounds were almost completely healed. The blood was almost dry, and a more healthy shade of colour was returning to their skin.
Their wings puffed themselves up proudly, wings of night unfurling and clashing against the glistening gold bone.
They stare down at you, their single eye boring through your soul.
Before vanishing in a flash of light, you hear - or, perhaps, feel - them say something.
+ Thank you. I won't forget this. +

Heroes - Chapter 11
Chpt. 1 , Masterlist
Pairing: Sgt. Elias Grodin x Female OC (Alexis Ryder)
Fandoms: Platoon (1986), Cherry (2021)
WARNINGS: I'm just going to put down a blanket for the entire book/all chapters: graphic depictions of violence and gore, torture, explicit sexual content, attempted sexual assault, language, marijuana use Notes: Final chapter in Heroes, so... massive spoilers below cut!
“Barnes!” I hollered to the empty forest as I trudged almost deliriously, insensibly through its thicket. I followed the ridge down to the forest, and started looping my way back around, like Elias had said he’d probably done. Maybe I should’ve stayed quiet, like a hunter would, but I needed to expel this awful pain in my chest, this hot-blooded rage that boiled in the pit of my stomach. My finger trembled above the trigger of my rifle.
“Barnes!” I screamed again, and nearly choked this time, my mouth dry. I needed a drink of water, but I didn’t dare take even a moment to stop to fish my canteen from my rucksack.
A twig snapped behind me, and I spun wildly on my heel, panting my breaths against the unruly strands of blonde hair that fell in wisps over my face. I blinked, looking through my red dot, but I could see nothing but a squirrel that darted up one of the trees.
I lowered my gun shakily and wiped my hair from my face, smearing both Taylor’s and Elias’ blood across my cheekbone, and I winced, nearly gagging on the metallic odour.
My manhunt was leading me to a higher elevation, back up to the mountain on which we’d fought the Taliban soldiers. I was still far enough that I couldn’t be heard, if my platoon hadn’t ventured any farther out.
“Barnes,” I panted out, still seeking him in the brush, still hoping that he’d hear me and think I was trying to regroup – but terrified that he’d hear me, and that I’d meet the same fate as Elias.
A tear rolled down my chin, stained red by blood, and I blinked furiously, trying to keep my vision sharp.
“Ryder?”
My heart skipped a beat or two in my chest upon hearing the gruff notes through the brambles ahead, and my finger slipped down over the trigger.
A broad shape bulled through the brush, brambles snapping around him like wire, and my gut churned as those cold, blue eyes, framed by macabre scars, met mine. And like my bloodlust that I had seen mirrored in Bunny’s eyes, I could see my rage mirrored in his.
“What the fuck are you doing out here, Ryder? What the fuck were you thinkin’, defyin’ my orders?” Barnes growled at me, those icy blues scouring the blood that painted my hands, uniform, and cheeks, and tinged my wild, unruly strands of hair. I must’ve looked like I’d gone mad, my chest still heaving where two pairs of dog tags hung around my neck. Elias’ letter and his headband were tucked into my rucksack.
“Barnes,” I breathed, formalities and politesse long forgotten. “Where’s Elias?”
Barnes’ eyes narrowed into two, icy slits, and he tensed, the ropes of his veins bulging beneath his arms.
“He’s back there,” he said, nodding behind me. “Damn Afghanis got us on the cliff-side. He didn’t make it.”
My chest felt as if it were about to combust, overcome by the rage that leapt like a wolf against my ribcage, snapping its jaws at my flesh.
“Get the fuck out of my sight, Ryder,” Barnes snapped at me, lip curling over his teeth before he turned a broad shoulder to me and began making his way over the crest of the forested slope.
“Barnes,” I growled, as I rose the stock of my rifle to my cheek, and when he turned to face me, those blue eyes sat to either side of the red in my sights. Though shaking, I held it in place over his skull, my finger squeezing gently against the trigger.
His brow furrowed, and his eyes danced not with fear, but with anger.
And as I braced myself to pull the trigger, something froze me in place, stole the breath from my tired lungs.
The woman in the mirror, back at Kandahar, dark bags sunken beneath eyes that stared not like a human’s, but an animal’s, into her reflection. Feral, dangerous, dead. Like the ones that stared at me from the sight of my rifle.
And when my breath was finally returned to my lungs, I panted it out in a whimper, shakily lowering my gun to the forest floor. I couldn’t let myself become that woman – couldn’t let myself become the man who stood in front of me, no matter how much that wolf inside of me gnashed at my ribs like bars on a cage.
Barnes studied me for a moment or two, and then his gun was raised, and I was staring down its barrel.
I dashed to the right, and pressed my back to the gnarled bark of a fir tree, breaths coming quicker now, and my barrel pointed at the sky as bullets ripped through the bark.
I lunged for another tree, this one woven more tightly with the rest, and another spray of bullets littered the air behind me, and out of the corner of my vision I could briefly glimpse the fiery flash of his barrel.
Though I often associated Barnes with being loud and abrasive with his words, he was deathly silent, like a predator, as we did this little dance around the trunks of the trees. The second I poked from hiding or switched cover, a barrage of bullets would follow.
One, two, ten, eighteen, twenty-something.
Counting my heartbeat was useless. I was going to die, and whether I did it calm or terrified, I stood no chance against the seasoned sergeant. Even Elias had fallen to him, and Barnes bore not a scratch.
I trembled against the bark of one of the trees as another volley of bullets tore through the brush around me, and I closed my eyes for a moment, and breathed, “Dad, forgive me.”
It was not what he would’ve wanted, I thought to myself, for me to die like this. In this lawless land, not for my country, but to be a hero, like him, and I was a coward, hiding like a wounded animal from a hunter.
As the array of bullets ceased, and puffs of dust and bark settled around me, worming their way into eyes that I fiercely blinked, I heard the drop of a magazine against the forest floor, and with a sharp exhale, I steeled myself, and rolled my shoulder against the bark of the tree, the barrel of my rifle swinging around to glimpse movement past the eerily-gentle sway of a fern.
On the apex of my next exhale, I pulled my trigger back, and crimson splattered the ferns, a groan splitting the air and the elbow of the man disappearing behind the tree.
I moved position again, attempting to flank him, my boots a flurry against the forest floor.
And that was when I felt as if my ribs had collapsed inward, as if someone had landed a punch beneath my breast, and their fist hadn’t stopped, had somehow been swallowed by my flesh and muscle. My exhale was strangulated of breath, nothing but a horrific, squealing gasp, and I scrambled madly to duck behind the next tree.
Once my back was pressed to the bark, I looked down at my breast, at the red that was slowly seeping past the fabric of my uniform. I clawed at the wound, and my fingers caught on the hole in my FLAK, my lungs still gasping desperately for air. My head was suddenly light, but I didn’t feel any pain, other than the intense pressure that built behind my ribs. Numbly, I grabbed hold of my gun again and pressed on, emerging from behind the tree with my jaws bared in a soundless screech and the butt of my rifle slamming against my shoulder with each bullet that I cast to the trees.
Still, I felt no pain – if anything, my muscles moved with a renewed vigor, and my actions were fueled not by my fear or my mind, but my heart; it beat louder than it ever had in my ears, commanding me and my rage, encouraging it like the beating of a war drum.
Icy blue eyes flashed in my vision as a rifle barrel was raised to me, but I noticed it waver, and my body lurched as what must have been another bullet graze my side; I was sprinting forward so quickly that I was nearly on top of him when I sent the bullets into his chest, his shoulder, his neck – anywhere that I could see.
My rifle kicked one more time against my shoulder, as I stared, wild-eyed, down at the dead man.
And then my head rolled back, and I stumbled, catching myself against the coarse bark of another tree. Blood streaked against it, though I wasn’t sure if it was my own.
I pushed myself from the tree, and followed the golden beams of light that reached for me through the lurid streaks of the boughs in the forest, that filtered through the feathered ferns that blurred in soft brushes of green like messy paint on a worn canvas.
My rifle hung limply from the arm that held itself to my torso, warmth cascading around each finger. The sensation was familiar – achingly so, but I couldn’t quite figure out why.
And as I reached the treeline, the fading sunset striking my retinas in a brilliant display of freckles, like that of a soldier’s face that I had come to adore, I collapsed onto my knees, the potent scent of wildflowers piercing the metallic odour that seemed to consume me, and violet-hued petals brushed the torn fabric of my khakis.
My eyes fluttered, and I still desperately gulped down whatever oxygen I could – the bullet must have hit my lung, I surmised, the pieces of what happened slowly trickling through my mind as if through a funnel with the world’s tiniest egress.
The sun was finally being claimed by its own demise, the last tendrils of honey snaking over the peaks of the mountains, and as I focused below it, I caught sight of a creature, its big, dark eyes settling on me and its fuzzy, cone-shaped ears batting against its narrow skull. Its jaw stilled, where a few wisps of grass hung from its black mouth, and then it was gone, bounding with an otherworldly grace through the meadow, its tail bobbing and blurring across my vision until it was no more, and I was alone.
I was alone, and I was dying, and I had no one to sing to me.
And then the pain hit me; an intense burn – far worse than the one that I had experienced from the hot iron – started beneath my breast, and spread across my body like fire. I looked down frantically, expecting to have been lit like a match, but I could only see rich, red blood still pouring around my fingers and splattering across the petals of the pastel flowers.
I tried to scream, but I couldn’t; the sound came out mangled, distorted, and my spine buckled. I let my rifle drop to the grass beside me, and swung my rucksack down, trembling, bloodied fingers reaching madly for the zipper. They brushed against something coarse – paper, Elias’ letter – and grasped the fabric of his headband.
I let myself fall against my rucksack, so that I could still glimpse the sunset as it made its descent past the jagged peaks, dark clouds crowning brilliant streaks of magenta and marigold, and I let my wound bleed freely now, instead dragging my fingers across each letter of the headband.
My breaths were growing thinner, my head lighter, the world a blurrier canvas, and the dark crown of the sunset was collapsing upon it, because everything was dimmer, less colourful.
And on my final inhale, as my eyes fluttered shut, and the world spun on its axis, I breathed in the lovely perfume of wildflowers, the musky tincture of sweat and earth, and the fire that inundated me became a steady, comforting warmth, like the touch of a lover in the darkness.
Faintly, a saccharine voice echoed in my skull, “Ryder. Are you injured?”
“Elias,” I breathed, and the final thread of my mind snapped, and I allowed his warmth to seep through my every pore like honey, to claim me even in this horrific darkness, to guide me as I sank lower, and lower, until eventually, I was weightless, no thought in my mind, no right or wrong left in my shattered bones – like a star, in a black, hollow sky.
