Exhibition Review
Starting from February 12, 2022 to May 1, 2022 Fotografiska New York hosts an exhibition titled NUDE. It showcases works by 30 female-identifying artists, such as Jenevieve Aken, Evelyn Bencicova, Arvida Byström, Elinor Carucci, Joana Choumali, Angélica Dass, Brooke DiDonato, Alexandra von Fuerst, Aneta Grzeszykowska, Carlota Guerrero, Marie Hald, Ina Jang, Viki Kollerova, Joanne Leah, Yushi Li, Monika Macdonald, Laila Majid, Malerie Marder, Alix Marie, Sakiko Nomura, Momo Okabe, Denisse Ariana Pérez, Bettina Pittaluga, Lotte van Raalte, Lina Scheynius, Leah Schrager, Dana Scruggs, Julia SH, Prue Stent & Honey Long, and Luo Yang. Over 200 works of photography, installation, and film explore the notion of naked body in contemporary art through the lense that challenges the male gaze and celebrates any form and shape of a human body. The exhibition addresses the understanding of how the representation of nude body in art today is different from an ‘idealized’ naked body form that was predominant in the western canon of visual arts. It explores not only the change in perception of the nude as an art form but also the role body plays in contexts of motherhood, self-acceptance, identity, sexual orientation, and many others from a female perspective.
Looking through the photographs I was particularly struck by Luo Yang’s image, and another one by Sakiko Nomura. Yang’s picture portrays a girl sitting on a windowsill almost naked, with cigarette smoke coming out of her mouth and nose. Knowing that Yang’s primary interest lies in the exploration of ‘girl-hood’ in contemporary Chinese society, this very simple portrait suddenly becomes much more powerful in its simplicity. The calmness and state of the inner peace is transferred through the absence of active gaze in the picture, through the blur of the subject’s hand’s motion and the smoke, through the enveloping natural sunlight coming in through the window and making the girl’s skin glow - we see her feeling comfortable with her own self, in her own body, she is strong and self-aware. Considering the subject sitting naked in front of the window, the photograph does not appear to me as vulnerable, instead it’s a very intimate glimpse into her life, which invites us to think about this woman’s personal story, and Yang does everything possible to make us accept this invitation. The second picture I wanted to address appeared to me as one more glimpse into someone’s life. It is a photograph by the japanese photographer Sakiko Nomura. Obviously, Nomura’s technique is different from the one of Yang - she’s most probably using the film camera with a very grainy and contrasty black and white film, which elevates the level of intimacy and sensitivity. Here we see a naked female figure reaching out to an ashtray, however, this one appears to be much more discreet and mysterious - the eyes are blurred and darkened, the perspective is titled and we’re peeking through something - all these details are enhanced by very sensitive play of light, its interplay with shadows and various textures of curtains and bedsheets. Looking ‘messy’ the room serves as a contrast texture opposing the naked skin - this anonymous figure just emerges out of the bed. This image appears to be much more ‘uncomfortable’, much more sudden, and much less peaceful. However, the subject here is not vulnerable either, the woman is just as strong, as in Yang’s picture, but this strength is manifested differently - through the feeling of independence, that sudden self-confidence of owning the space and owning your own body in it. That is why I think both of those images strongly support the overall theme of the exhibition - the nude is not at the forefront, the naked bodies in these works are very honest and natural, they’re inseparable from the environment and the social context.
I personally find this exhibition extremely thought-provoking and emotionally impactful, especially today, when gender norms are being challenged the way they haven’t been before. The selection of artists, mediums, and the overall approach of addressing a perspective that hasn't been addressed before is meaningful not only on the level of a particular institution but on a social one.
