And, as I think everyone was predicting, there's new Homestuck Content today. I'm hoping this is going to be the big update where they get to the point and have the long-teased [S] page, but we're not looking good if we're opening with Dirk, whose primary character trade is long rambling speeches. This is the first we've seen of Dirk since the new team took over, though.

Ready to take the floaties off and dive back into the depths of the churning, primal ocean from which everything that matters in this story evolved, and to which it must inevitably return?

The idea that Dirk's CANON plan is ironically consisting of him sitting around idly discussing The Lore is a decent meta joke, but it got old after a page or two. Please do literally anything, Dirk.

I do like this page, though, with the art busting out of the frame. And, given what I literally just said (I write these liveblogs as I read them), Dirk's opening by repeatedly insisting things are happening in his story is meant to be ironic. He's also claiming he became a god in order to do this HS2 stuff, which is flatly untrue. Presumably he means be became Ultimate to do narrative stuff, which is an interesting order of events if that's the case, and it's not that becoming Ultimate made him evil. Also, let me put some appropriate background music on.

Rose dipped pretty early on in that visual montage to spend some quality time trading barbs and bumping uglies with the supposedly impartial proctor of said Contest, next to the vacant meat-sack that once housed her consciousness. Irresponsible, sure, but to give credit where due, it was irresponsible in a poignant and symbolically weighty sort of way. Classic Rose shit

It does feel weird for the new team to be directly commenting on the quality of the writing of the old team like this, but to be fair, it is classic Rose shit.

New Guardian Mode artstyle, which we were starting to see in Candy as well, since these characters aren't kids any more. But in Candy, everyone keeps their faces, whereas Dirk is just his hair and glasses, like Bro.

Oh good, I turned quirks back on. There's a lot of meta complaining about the writing this update.

I do like that the humans are looking more like Guardians and the Trolls are looking more like Ancestors. It's odd to have them standing next to each in different art styles like that, but it kind of works.

DIRK: Or was all that hand-wringing about how worried you were that Rose and I were becoming big bad cosmic tyrants with no regard for the poor little mortals buffeted to and fro by the vicious momentum of our designs just virtue signaling?

Dirk's use of the term "Virtue Signalling" is probably worth making a note of here. HS2 has sort of flirted with the idea of Dirk as right-wing, and that appears to be continuing here.

There's a lot of speculation that the Candy kids are going to end up in the game as well, and that this is even something that the original cast over there is working towards. This would require, as Terezi points out here, literal genocide. And I think that is where the Candy story is going, with Rose/Jade/Jane all being in on it and Kanaya/Karkat being cut out, so it's nice of Terezi to remind us that Sburb is evil and that sacrificing an entire planet to help your kids become immortal is kind of a dick move.

DIRK: But hey, you say you aren't feeling it? DIRK: Fine. DIRK: I can make concessions. DIRK: I've got other agents in play, and as I've said, I know you aren't going to risk fucking your end of the work up.

This is the kind of thing HS2 really need more of, stuff to speculate on. Terezi, Rose, and Dirk are literally the only three people on the entire fucking planet. What "other agents" could Dirk possibly have?

DIRK: You need this session to happen. DIRK: You need a chance to fix the mistake you've got in that wallet, burning a hole through your pocket. DIRK: You've made a lot of those, Terezi, but you know that besides being important, what we're doing here is a chance to rectify one of them. DIRK: And you aren't going to let that chance slip. TEREZI: ... DIRK: I know what it's like to make hard choices for the people you care about. DIRK: To run your brain raw thinking about how to make things right. DIRK: I've been doing it my whole damn life. DIRK: The choice you're presented with here is pretty fucking easy, and you're a very smart person, so I trust you to make the right decision.

Also, it's nice to have a little fucking narrative tension on this planet for once. Dirk and Rose are each creating an entire sentient race for the purpose of sacrificing them. Terezi is in a position to save the world, but doing so means giving up her chance to save John. Wow! Stakes! It's nice when stories have those, instead of just idly fucking around doing nothing for the sake of a meta-joke! Also it means the bad guy is being evil instead of merely boring, which is also a nice thing to do now and again.

There's not much to analyze in this art, but it's stylin'. The guardian mode look is great. Is Rose wearing lipstick on her robot face?

There's been a very subtle incest-y vibe with Dirk/Rose in Meat, and apparently we're keeping that too. Being sexually depraved is becoming like Rose's defining trait.

Localized time travel, while technically possible, tends to get pretty fucked even in the most ideal of circumstances, to say nothing of the fact that it's way outside my wheelhouse as a Heart player. The concept works pretty well for my purposes, though, and as a burgeoning omnipotent narrative god, I can mimic it in a way that's functionally identical. The move here is that I'm going to envelop the local galaxy group in a pocket of my influence and narratively accelerate it via Bullshit so that whatever's going on in here goes on faster, so we can get to the good shit faster, so we can get on with our jobs, and so you gawking voyeurs have more of our lives to guzzle greedily down.

Oh, that's kind of a cool ability, but also what can't an Ultimate do?

A while back, it became apparent that while my Deltritan offspring were to be terrestrial, Rose's were going to be aquatic.

Rose's team is going to win, and it's going to be the 48-player Squiddle session that creates the troll universe, making all of Homestuck canon an inescapable time loop through which no new ideas can emerge, except for the influence of Candy.

ROSE: For all my temporary discomfort with the prospect of settling down on Deltritus and starting what could very loosely be considered a family with you,

Rose he is your dad.

DIRK: I'm doing this for all of us.

Hm. No big [S] page and we still haven't gotten to the point, but we've made the Dirk half this story significantly less fucking boring, so I guess that's a win. This is an update the story desperately needed, giving Dirk some characterization and leaning in to how fucked everything here is.

Also, spending the entire update teasing a timeskip to the start of the game and then ending without doing it is a good meta joke, provided we don't keep doing it for ten more updates.

Custom Toonami Holiday Announcement!

Since last years’ Lonely Hearts Marathon watching random waifu-themed anime of varying qualities was so much fun, I decided to do it again this year with a different theme! Introducing:

The Bitchy, Beautiful, Badass (B3) Girlfriend Marathon!

Featuring anime with various waifus that are either total bitches, badasses, or just rally pretty. A lot of these are just anime I’ve wanted to check out/catch up on but never got around to.

Starting out the Bitch portion we have Uzaki-chan and Nagatoro-chan teasing the start of the block, Komi-san, Mieruko-chan and Dress-Up Darling round out the beautiful portions with some fun antics, and things get a little more adult with Dirty Pair and Why The Hell Are You Here-Sensei closing things off!

I think I touched on this earlier but this line which starts the roleplay here has some oddly sexual, or at least reproductive, subtext. ‘whelping’ is a term which means giving birth, usually applied to animals. a stoop is a flat area in front of the entrance to something, but it also refers to a bent-forward posture, as in stooping down to pick something up. So on its face this means either: "I land in the space where you give birth, and try to open the entrance to your cave” or “I get on top of you while you’re bent forward, and try to open the entrance to your ‘cave’.” and then a blood-covered cat comes out of the cave, another piece of birth imagery. Terezi goes on to roleplay eying nepeta’s children hungrily, which echoes a recurring theme of child-eating and of Kronos/Saturn (the classical god famous for eating his children) which I posted about ages ago on my non-liveblog blog and in reply to @mmmmalo. 

This segues into a discussion of the game rather awkwardly, during which nepeta uses her moirail to hide the fact she doesn’t really want to play in a big group:

Her enthusiasm drops immediately after she realizes that it will be a game with a lot of players, rather than a more intimate game with Terezi and maybe a few more people. There are several plausible explanations for this, ranging from simple self-preservation (she knows games with Vriska kill and maim people) to romantic or sexual interest in Terezi (we had that weirdly sexual rp earlier, recall) to social anxiety (she does after all live in a cave far from everyone).

During the discussion, Terezi drops this comment on us:

“He lives nowhere near you.” For some reason I always assumed that they spent time together irl a lot, but this is probably not the case. this may explain in part, how enthusiastic she is to see him in the game.

it’s just such a BRAVE narrative in some ways–not really the use of second person, which is 50% gimmick and 50% narrative technique, when it’s done well that’s neato but mostly it’s stylistic but the use of time-travel to just leap the narrative ahead of itself, to insert foreshadowing/stakes from fucking NOWHERE and the fact that Hussie kept it all in his head and it makes a cogent whole: really smart, really effective progression/pacing

what i love about terezi is like the mix of practicality, curiosity, get shit done but with the true motivation of “what if” and the surprising interpersonal insight which arises from that same curiosity like from the narrative pov, we saw dave find his body and dump his body, then cut away, and then he just had bloody hands but it’s terezi who noticed, and tells us via this conversation, that dave was having A Think about those bloody hands b/c they’re an accidental contemplation of time and morality dave would never bring that up b/c of the facade of cool, narrative can’t easily show us and it’s not action-based really, but terezi introduces it b/c terezi cares b/c terezi cares about people in the “what do they do??? when exposed to this stimuli??” sense not in the, caring about, their welfare, thing not that part

Aw jeez, there’s the second Homestuck 2 update of the month. Now I gotta liveblog it, which is going to take-

Uh, not very much time at all, apparently? It’s only one page, vs the other update’s 25, so either this is a hell of a page or the 2,000 patrons who contributed to have “two updates a month” are gonna be super mad.

Oh it’s a big tall infinite canvas page. Neat! Rose is bored of the last update and is wandering off. Was she not creating a species of her own, then, or is she done with that? 

The dissonant hum of struggling mechanics fills Terezi's ears as she sits, cross-legged, on the floor of the now-ruined engine room. She likes it here. The soft whitenoise ringing of the extensive ventilation network sounds, if she closes her nose just right, like the rustle of wind through the leaves of a treehive universes away.

An entire fucking alien planet to explore and Terezi goes back to the ship she’s been stuck on for three years. Admittedly Deltritus is apparently less interesting than the game worlds, but come on! These kids need to go outside! 

ROSE: And resurrecting my meat puppet would not only be difficult to the point of being worthless, it would also be extremely lame. ROSE: Not that it would be out of character for this story. We live and breathe on the stupefyingly mind-numbing, and the mind-numbingly stupid. ROSE: But then we begin to veer toward dissolution, yet again. I’m kind of about this meta horseshit, if we’re being entirely honest, and if someone calls attention to the question of where in the fuck 13-year-old-from-2009 Dave Strider picked up the term “Neoliberal”, I’ll forgive this comic a lot of its flaws.

At the same time, there’s only so long I can read a comic about whether or not I should be reading a comic. 

Rosebot looks over at the plinth where her body sits, kept alive, sure, but atrophied and weak, dependent on this machine to continue projecting consciousness to the abiotic enclosure keeping the realization of the Ultimate Self from tearing her apart.

I suspect that Rose’s comatose body is a metaphor for Homestuck as a whole, here.

Wouldn't it be better to just let it die? Terezi isn't asking new questions. Rose had first threatened suicide when she was eight. (She couldn't bear the thought of attending the funeral her mother was organizing for her beloved cat, Jaspers.) When she was ten, she put on her coat and stood in whipping winter winds on the balcony overlooking a frozen waterfall, imagining the plunge with a blank expression on her face, eyes stinging from the New York cold. (Her mother had drunk herself to sleep with the vacuum on, again, the mechanical wailing inside playing a chord with the gale outside, inescapable.) But her first – and only – real attempt was a success.

Jesus, what a fucking callback.

Also, if you’re not as versed in the DEEPEST LORE as I am, Rose’s successful first attempt to commit suicide is not actually a reference to her being put into a robot body, it’s a reference to the suicide mission from Cascade that created the Green Sun and caused her (and Dave) to ascend to godhood. Suicide in one form or the other tends to follow the Strider-Lalonde family, as Dirk killed himself in Homestuck, and the Candy Dirk killed himself in the epilogues as well. Roxy being the odd man out there. Rose’s first suicide created canon. Her second one could end it. 

That was a step too far. Tensions that once simmered under the surface have found the catalyst for a boil. Terezi and Rosebot's repartee of words is replaced by the dissonant notes of clanging and smashing as they roll around on the floor of the crashed Theseus's central chambers, throwing punches and smashing into control panels in a crescendo of chaos.

I’m having some difficulty accepting that Terezi is able to successfully fight an angry robot. Vriska certainly couldn’t.

Dirk’s irritated reference to the Bechdel Test irritates me, now, given that he’s supposed to be a stand-in from people who thought Homestuck went off the rails in Act 6. It’s kind of an obvious bitter shot at the fanbase. 

Also, and I get that he’s the bad guy and it’s supposed to be hypocritical, but Dirk Strider spent the entirety of Homestuck 1 whining about his feelings and didn’t really contribute to the “plot” in much of a meaningful way.

And...wow, yeah. That’s the whole update. It’s significantly shorter than all of the others, and the last update was also a bit shorter than the previous chapters. This is also the first chapter to directly follow from the previous one, and it sure looks like they did “two updates” this month by chopping off a chunk of a normal update and calling it it’s own thing. But they did have the big tall panel, at least, so that’s something. This is also the first double-update month, let’s be fair, so maybe we can call it a mulligan because they had short notice that they’d need two updates in February.
